Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

So planning about how to make money to, hire people, fund endeavors etc. If you have enough money you can get stuff done in the modern world.

Running the numbers if we buy 2 dots finance and the excellency just 9xp. Molly would then have effectively have 12 dice for making money on the open market, when the mortal absolute max is 13 dice. Throw in the -2 difficulty from working in a freezer and Molly could easily turn seed money of a few thousand into well over ten thousand in a month.

In the second month Molly starts her own company, and quickly turns that money into several millions, right fast. From their a lot of options open up. We could just hire a few dozen minor talents in the city to work magic for us. Donate to projects like SI etc.
Our Excellence only works on favored abilities, not on finance.

Except going from nothing to ridiculous amounts of money is what gets the feds involved and no matter how strong or powerful we are we can't beat the IRS
Well for one Molly would hardly be the first person to make a lot of money on the market, and as a magical they super don't care. And second so what, rich people pay their taxes in full. Nothing wrong with being super skilled at making money.

I mean that is a fair point, but one thing you guys might want to consider is 'not against the laws of magic' is not the same thing as being under the radar. You making a lot of money will make you very visible. Do you want that?

I don't need to have an economic major to realize that having that much money out of nowhere is a bad idea.

Doubt most rich people are super under the radar by design. Ever hear of Blackrock the group that collective control vast swaths of the entire worlds economy.

Most super rich people do not become that by overnight day trading form one computer in suburban Chicago.
Not talking about becoming suddenly wealthy. Building up from just a few thousand even with a max mortal dice pool would still take months of work. Well unless you use one of the super scetch brokers that provide 100k$ to 1$ leverage. Compounding interest however works in our favor. It take a thousand times more work to make the first million, then the second million. And before then it is a simple matter to signing up with law-firm transferring the assets to a corporation.

I mean if you guys want to try to go full shadowrun I will not stop you just keep in mind that divination is a thing in universe. It seems unlikely that Molly would be the first one to have this idea.

If purely normal mortals can make millions on the market. An Exalted can do the same just as well. Unless you want to go down the rabbit hole of every successful person in the world being a supernatural.

I am not saying you cannot do it, just saying supernaturals can, specifically skilled diviners so other people will maybe be keeping an eye for those kinds of strokes of luck. Even if nine times out of ten it is just someone who got lucky or good the tenth might be worth the watch.

I could believe that prior to the 80s, when the economy was fairly stable. But after that the boom and bust nature of the economy makes that unfeasible. Millions of people make lots of money during boom times, just riding the economy high. And when the bust times hit, that money it taken by the smart people into their hands. I can't believe anybody has a spy network able to cover say 5% of the worlds entire population.

These are people using literal magic not primarily a mundane spy network.

This is a world that exists alongside the supernatural, so anything is possible. I would expect magical diviners to put more effort into acquiring sudden windfalls of cash through lotteries, gambling, and other relatively easy to manipulate setups rather than trying to finagle the financial system, if only due to magic's inability to play nice with technology and the lack of magically powerful or skilled individuals familiar enough with those systems to do much.

Leaving that aside, you don't have to keep watch on the entire country, not so long as you focus your efforts on a small number of population centers, Chicago being one of them.

I don't expect we would draw much attention if we started making non-ludicrous amounts of money, so long as we're careful and patient. Worst case, we do the whole 'shell corporation, assets kept in a foreign bank that isn't friendly with the U.S. Government' thing, though that's all pretty involved and not just outside Molly's skillset, but also her character.

Way to complicated a decent law-firm for just a minor 50k yearly. Could setup a corporation that provides benefits like housing, cars, healthcare for yourself, and family, 3 months vacation time yearly. Which is turn is owned by a holding company in Alaska. End result Molly is just an normal person working at company, making a simple 40k a year. End result Molly owns nothing on paper. But effectively controls millions without any legal responsibility. That is how the really Rich people do things.

The vote is really close and not a lot of votes made so I'm leaving it open.

Dresden verse humans, make the Buffy verse people look like amateurs at ignoring the supernatural. At least in Buffy their are a few people that keep the supernatural out of the news. But Dresden verse it is like the entire population is under a massively stronger version of werewolf Delirium. Not that I blame them, magic stuff is overwhelming strong, able to ignore anything less then modern tanks platoons, for the weakest magical of magical beings.

I fully support acquiring money through our talents... so much in this world is made easier if you have some level of financial security and disposable income... but we need to do so in a responsible manner. Especially when the Council is going to be looking for any excuse to see us in a negative light. Engineering a windfall isn't illegal by their book but it still would paint us in a grasping, impulsive light.

I'd be happy enough being able to make a few thousand here and there that we can use to start making things up to Harry in the short term. Any more than that, I'd really rather have any coin come out of something we do or make. There is no shortage of such things that could come from our hands.

If we want to try empire building after that, so be it, but give us an honest foundation.

We really don't want to be trying to figure out how to lay out the truth. We don't have the bandwidth for it. But we can bring up the parts that don't require table flipping anyone's worldview. Trying would... Christ, it would not be good for them or us right this second.

But there are things worth talking about regardless.
