The option has good stuff, yes, but it still really doesn't solve the Companion Problem.

The only thing I can say to that is the edit I realized in my earlier post about not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Also, that's 2 years to figure out the Findross problem and soupe Gisena up if we can't get Companions fully excluded from the Curse(Edit: Like a 5% drain for companions instead of the full 10%).

It solves all the Afflictions problems for 2 years; that can be a lot of time for a Progression-type Cursebearer.
The companion problem isn't short term so for this specific aspect of the curse 2 years isn't relevant. I do agree that it does a lot for our integration into society. Also its psychological effect is more than half its value for me and the only reason I see it as a viable pick.

2 years that we already have
We either solve this problem in full or we aren't long term companions; Conclusion has a lot of value in other aspects but for this it doesn't even qualify as 'the good'

Also spending 7 arete on this makes it significantly more difficult to reach the Rank and utility needed to make findross.

The point is that not having to worry about Decimator as a ticking-time clock opens a lot of options for us and is frankly safer. We can spend this time of increased safety searching for more permanent solutions to the Affliction. Mitigation efforts not spent on Affiliation during those two years can go to other Curses, likely Apocryphal. Any other purchase doesn't bring us any closer to mitigating it. I don't think the upgrade to Fell-handed or Abducting the Armor would be as good; especially when it comes to exploring the Human Sphere.

What's the basis for your claim about findross? Basically I'm operating under the assumption we'll be scrabbling at this problem all quest or get some giant cost solution juxtaposed with another thing we badly want and it'll be a legitimate question whether or not we take it.

[X] Keep Your Own Counsel - See if you can get more information out of her without disclosing anything about your particular circumstances. It's good to trust; better to trust after you hold all the cards. You've barely known her half a week. You can always tell her more when she proves herself a reliable ally. [+0.5 Arete]

[X] Of Fishermen, A King
- The sharp bright sword of will that cuts to the heart of these waters and brings their mightiest bounty to heel! [+???, +Legendary Fish, +Gisena, -1 Arete or Exhausted condition]
First time voting after speedreading through Even Further Beyond. Keep your own Counsel for bonus Arete to power up and because I don't trust her. I don't know what a legendary fish is but i'm certain I want to find out. plus there's a mystery box and if we get exhausted instead of -1 Arete we have to sleep more which we already want.

this is the info we have about findross
and yes of course, keeping Gisena around will have a significant opportunity cost. Half-measures, however, will only increase it.

Accretion, Gisena Allria, Hunger, Forebear's Blade

*The highest synergy of the popular Accretion elements
*Very high power, but somewhat lacks proactive utility. Accretion + Hunger + Forebear's Blade allows for a rapid rate of advance which means easier access to findross for Gisena if you can figure out the method.

"It's downright suspicious." He followed, keeping his eyes peeled. They'd spoken of fishing, and a fishing spot appeared. It could be benign, the world yielding to his whims on this small matter - a faint echo of the causality-bending influence he'd once exerted by sheer power of spirit.

I wonder if this is simply Foremost engineering. Maybe they made this place as a training/testing ground to study/gain rank, so suitable legend building opportunities will be semi-subtly made possible by space bending. Becoming a legend isn't easy though, so most of the lab rats die.

Alternatively, entire thing is built to contain something of high rank, which is why space is funky and why things get randomly summoned from other universes.

If anything, it's a perfect place for Decimator's Curse.

Hmm.

Accretion - The Tyrant had such high Accretion rank that he could say 'Nope' to destiny. Natural Plot Armor that lets the hero survive multiple times.

Seven Seals - The Tyrant's Soul Evocation allowed him to defeat Destiny, maybe by Sealing away the world from its influence. The Hero's Companions used their soul evocations to save him as needed.

Battle Magic - The Tyrant killed all the NPC questgivers. Destiny is stuck. The Hero survived by dint of 'save target at cost of own life' type spells.

Yeah... That's I think an unreasonably charitable reading of Hunger's motivations. He'll try to pay back the Accursed sure, but claiming that's the reason he took Decimator is a stretch. He would've helped The Accursed basically just as much taking Slumber, but that would've impacted him more personally and potentially left him with less chance of vengeance.
You're correct, it is a very charitable reading. But I don't think it's outside the boundaries of what reasons he could have had, and as such is a valid source to consider when discovering Hunger's character.

And while yes, he would have helped the Accursed just as much, he would not specifically have helped him not drain life from reality. I get the impression that each Curse is individually diminished when shared and mitigated. Progression one does not carry over to the next.
Just be glad you never met the version of Nilul that was a warstrider pilot!
That sounds like the exact opposite of how one should feel. Ully, warstrider ace leading a squad of warstrider girls sounds amazing.

But I don't think it's outside the boundaries of what reasons he could have had

True, if we end up taking Conclusion I think this reading would retroactively become closer to correct also.

And while yes, he would have helped the Accursed just as much, he would not specifically have helped him not drain life from reality. I get the impression that each Curse is individually diminished when shared and mitigated. Progression one does not carry over to the next.

No way to really know, my assumption was that it depends on what the Accursed prioritizes, maybe if we mitigate slumber heavily he just redirects some of his power from slumber to another curse as it's currently at a suitable level of mitigation in his view in comparison.

I got the urge to do a bit of Lord Hunger/Gisena Blackrom shipping. Basically, Gisena found her own Artifact with mental corruption issues and like any self-respecting Rihaku protagonist, picked it up.

Project Candle Light Hate Date(630 Words)

It turns out Letrizia was part of the management crew for "Roosters", the nebulous community of mercenaries, contractors, and government operatives who explored the Voyaging Realm from the city known as the Roost. The payment for recovering her was generous enough to enable you and Gisena to relax for some time before having to take another contract. Letrizia tried to get an exclusivity deal with House Atriez out of you but the Tyrant's doom wouldn't allow it.

Some of the Roosters who came from Astral Rifts didn't even qualify as human though, more like human adjacent. Strange horns, clockwork robots, multi-armed angels, it was marvel that they could be understood at all. You thought you understood the dynamic you and Gisena had, but ever since that last contract where she salvaged a pitch-black crescent-moon/shovel/blade… thing with you and some of the nonhuman Roosters, it's been getting stranger.

"This is the third contract you've been exactly 11 minutes late to. Are all nobles this terrible at timekeeping?"

"You could ask me again in an hour? I'll probably remember and blurt it out of the blue once you've forgotten all about this."

Her supplies were immaculate, she somehow managed to get a Class 3 suit of power armor souped up to Class 4 levels, the weird polearm she found would be worthy of your panopoly if you didn't already have a connection to the forebears blade, and she effectively slaughtered Astral Denizens, regardless of her punctuality. She got more out of the textbooks and technical supplies she bought than you could. You suspect she's jumped a rank or two from wherever she was before.

You tried ransoming her slipper back to her after she repeated the stunt she pulled on the river. She let you keep it, then filched your left boot when you weren't looking. You don't hate her. Some part of you actually enjoys the banter, and she's almost as sharp as your sword is. She took your curses down a notch. It's just… frustrating. What is she trying to accomplish? Killcount contests are fun but not when they're every contract. Or her rubbing the fact she's picking up more of this world's techbase in your face.
------------------------------------------------------------
"What does she want?" you asked Righteous Open Hand, the multi-armed lion-headed angel that was in your party when Gisena found the shovel thing.

Righteous Open Hand let out a low, pensive rumble.

"I recall a story I heard of a dead race. Their love of competition was without peer. It was through competition and violence that they let their torrid passions out and became one"

You arched an eyebrow. Does everybody here think you're flirting?

"I'm pleased I don't have to worry about things like that anymore. I think Good luck." The angel said as you walked away.

She couldn't possibly be flirting, you don't exactly feel like explaining to her about your dead wife, and the Decimator's Affliction makes this a bad idea in general. This is wrong, this is… you don't know what this is…
-----------------------------------------------------------
"There's a contract for Sapphire-Class Drake Cores. Do you intend to join me?" You ask Gisena.

"51-49 Split on the bounty, whoever kills the most gets the prize?"

"How about we make it more interesting and just spar instead? I'm getting tired of all these petty games."

"Thought you'd never ask. It's like what you always say about stealing whatever amount of joy you can, and I intend to take it all..." Gisena said with a wolflike grin on her face as she gripped the shovelblade.

The sparring match with her is in three days. You can't take this anymore. Hopefully this will be enough to get this out of both your systems and you can explain to her how this will never work out.

[X] Substantially

I'm just not brave enough to go full Yolo. So I'll try to help push this into competitive range. Even though it bears the stigma of Balance this option does give pretty decent rewards for a not terrible cost. Hard to know how long Tired will last though, might depend in part on what stats we buy. It also combos well with the currently leading spill.

[X] Keep Your Own Counsel

My biggest reservation on this is still that she might catch us out due to some unknown surveillance capability she has. Even if that happens though it's not like we lied to her face here, so probably not catastrophic. Other than that I'm pretty convinced we don't want to be running the risks of disclosure at this point considering the info we currently have.

Alright guys, you're at 6 Arete with decent progress towards 7. Consolidation will take place sometime today at late afternoon or evening EST. The options offered will depend on your Arete at that time.

I'm seeing quite a bit of support for Conclusion! Encouraging, but to get both that and Of Fishermen A King would require you to have 7 Arete + Debt, because Arete Debt + Exhaustion is not a valid combination. Also, remember that you do want short-term power both to survive and to take on more dangerous (=profitable) tasks in the early part of your growth curve. Conclusion is an amazing mitigation opportunity but doesn't give you any power whatsoever in the short term, it even reduces your XP gain rate!

>Get Spill and Substantially for that sweet, sweet Letrizia +++++ goodies
>Also get Night Sky too

You may not like it, but this is how peak vote looks like :V

I may not feel good about it, but we should save our Arete rather than snag Conclusion. It effectively locks us out of piloting Verschlengorge by torpedoing our affinity and reduces our XP gain; I'd rather see what solutions this world has for dealing with Curses before we go all-in on the ring's method. Of the 7 Arete options, Evening Sky's my preference. More charisma to help with the socials once we hit civilization and a replacement for our armor (part of the reason I wanted Accretion in the first place). Also, that aesthetic.

I'm curious which 4-6 Arete spending plans you guys would be interested in this Consolidation. We won't have the option slots to include every combination. The three main candidates are:

1) King of Thieves + Echo of the Forebear + Undying Echo

*+++Agility, +Strength and ++++Constitution
*Can also add Quelling and Of Fishermen, A King to get the benefits of the Legendary Fish and Mystery Box

2) King of Thieves + Slumber of Aeons

*A fairly greedy build that still gets some stats
*Two ways of scaling - supernatural thief skills and sleeping
*Lots of stats in the long term
*Can also add Quelling and Of Fishermen, A King to get the benefits of the Legendary Fish and Mystery Box

3) Echo of the Forebear + Undying Echo + Slumber of Aeons

*Doesn't reduce incidence of "mage"-type options like King of Thieves will
*Giga sleep tank
*Extreme +Strength and +Constitution in the long term
*Banking sleep allows for increased utility during crunch times
*Can sleep more to ramp out stat gains even faster
*Can also add Quelling and Of Fishermen, A King to get the benefits of the Legendary Fish and Mystery Box

Their competition will likely be the 7-cost Arete options, of course! With 3 of those we can only fit 1-2 of the above plans into consolidation.

I've gone off Slumber more and more as time has passed, so option one would be my favorite. Option three is a bit boring but pretty practical, so it's okay. Option two I'm really just not a fan of the two choices when picked together, I just don't feel they work great combined practically or aesthetically. So that's my least favorite.

While I was swayed by King of Thieves for a time, I think I prefer this now. My eyes are starting to open to us really having a lot of options and I feel we can do stuff that's stronger/more interesting than the warrior thief build. "mage"-type options can be pretty sweet

Also Slumber of Aeons is a very serious boost to our safety since it lets us act for more than 15 hours at a time at full strength during a crisis.

I'm curious which 4-6 Arete spending plans you guys would be interested in this Consolidation.
I'd probably go with 2 or 3 of those plans. But I'm really hoping we can get up to 7 arete at the least and manage to switch to conclusion, since people are not willing to switch off of the king fish.

On that note
[x] Spill
[x] Substantially
[x] None

Approval voting here I come!

I like the Undying Echo variants more, especially the Slumber+Undying one, that line about mage options being reduced seems bad to me. I like mage options.

Of the 7-pointers, Evening Sky appeals to me visually and because cool power, but Conclusion has the ability to satisfy moral concerns for a while, which kinda obligates me to vote for it. I guess we could bank on getting some Decimator mitigation from our companions, but that's not as reliable.

I am definitely voting for Conclusion but would prefer the slumber options. Especially the third one. King of thieves takes away from other archetypes for option 2.
