Yeah, with the clarification that buying lower Arete options is less value-for-money, let's just save up and pass the marshmallow test. Yes, initial power compounds itself by generating opportunities, but with the King's Scepter and this recent victory there's no need to cash out just yet. Also, it may be lucky that Power didn't win, since apparently affinity with Verschlengorge's correlated with the Decimator's Affliction. I do like the aesthetic we've got going here, though, 'he who hungers' could become a hell of an epithet.
Question though, will buying Dead But Dreaming grant Slumber of Aeons too? It doesn't sound like it and Dead isn't under Slumber of Aeons but right beside it. If it doesn't grant the Slumber, purchasing Dead But Dreaming may be more efficient in Arete sense but would lack the benefits of the Slumber. Plus we would lose the potential power gain from purchasing the Slumber of Aeons right away right now.

If either No Quarter (w/ sufficient tactics - remember, tactics for this fight must receive support to have a chance at inclusion, aside from those tactics generated by the hero himself) or Commune With Verschlengorge win, you'll get an opportunity to see what Arete can buy, and will probably deeply regret not having more!
(Second emphasis mine)

Yo guys, just found a pertinent fact while going through the thread that I thought I should point out. At this point I think getting into the giant robot is somewhat inevitable so I think saving up Arete until we at least see what it has to offer would be a good idea.

[X] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear
[X] Forebear's Blade - Fell-Handed Stroke

Shame Knowledge won, I was looking forwards to the giant mech fights!
2) Initial powerset not inspiring me, especially the Scepter. A powerset that comes down to 'you will get a useful combat power' doesn't really tell me much or gets my imagination going, because it could be pretty much anything. To be honest I still do not know what Scepter actually got us, haven't we just used our old magic and lesser remittances...?
Scepter improved our old magic to how it was in the middle of our adventure; It's in Compelled to Battle:

But alongside came a spark of power, swift and irrepressible, coursing through nerve and vein, awakening some part of the Hero that had been. Sublime electricity like a held breath, like the stillness before a storm, skin of the world so paper thin that with a fingertip's exertion he could brush through, touch the capillary-walls of the weft between realms.

He was not fully restored. Nowhere near the fullness of his power, still but a shadow of the man that he was, soul and memory tattered with holes. That was the cost in selfhood that he'd burned to strike down the overlord.

But it was strength enough to start again, and with strength came even a dull flicker of hope.

3) There was neither a setting nor any characterisation of the PC to initially get me interested. The quest pretty much started right away with several rounds of build votes.
EFB basically started the same way though. Hell, Nameless had even less characterization than the Hero.

It may be that the initial Curses section is too long, but SV's posts / day has been on the decline for a while now.
Yeah, the split from SB actually harmed them quite badly in retrospect. Bleach Quest could get 2000 posts in a day, and the curve was only going up until the split happened.
It may be that Quest activity on both sites peaked around 2017-2018; though SV activity is still higher on that front. Though for me it just seems that the new quests aren't as enticing; it's hard to to make conclusive statements about that sometimes.

For the Arete options, I think it's basically King of Thieves, Sleep of the Just or banking it. I don't think any other buy is worth it; Sleep is barely so because banking rest might actually come in handy. Since the no-expenditure vote is the most represented; let me shill King of Thieves:
[X] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear
[X] 2 Arete: Sword That Was Stolen
- King of Thieves

Still provides great power and survivability thanks to the stat increases while giving us new options by improving our Thieving ability and our Abductions. I think broading our Progression even more would be better than the burst power option provided by Fell-hand.

Doesn't look like it would, yeah. There are obvious synergies, but the former doesn't come with the latter. In a sense, Slumber of Aeons is the greediest option, since it raises our sleep requirement but benefits tremendously from an early purchase. Plus, we can save up some sleep while healing for increased freedom of action once we reach civilization.

Hm... King of Thieves might open new and exciting avenues of development (which I bet also cost Arete, everything good costs Arete) and its agility bonus converts imperfectly into survivability. Although if we're worried about survivability, Undying Echo addresses those concerns and might speed up recovery. It's so boring, though!

We should wait until the respite from Decimation has lapsed just in case getting into the robot disagrees with our constitution, but piloting at some point does seem likely.

We've got a 10% penalty to our growth through Hunger over the next month, If we want to compensate for that, we should consider Sleep of Aeons. That or we should just maximize the benefit we get for the cost and take Quelling, it's a better foundation to build future Decimator's Mitigation prospects on mathematically, and we get a mystery box.

A Hunger Sated - Temporary condition that causes the Decimator's Affliction to abate completely for a time. You may upgrade it with Arete. By default: Reduces progress from Hunger by 10% for a month. During that month the Decimator's Affliction slumbers.

...I actually love this. Hunt until your hunger is sated and gain power. Sleep until you are hungry again and still gain power while sleeping. Repeat. We are basically a Dragon.

By the way @Rihaku

Yo guys, just found a pertinent fact while going through the thread that I thought I should point out. At this point I think getting into the giant robot is somewhat inevitable so I think saving up Arete until we at least see what it has to offer would be a good idea.
Given the mech is related to our curse somehow and possibly would make it even worse or has a similar effect I'm not sure piloting it is a good idea even if it's stronk.

Nice!
Ignoring Arete options for now because we might want to bank those for stronger options though a good long term option for Arete is the Slumber of Aeons - allows for banking of sleep, increases threshold, perfect for the monotonous interludes that will inevitably pop up once we're a few years into ruling. If we're going to go for short term, Undying Echo isn't bad, increasing constitution massively.

[X] Hunger - Sleep of the Just
Vulnerability is decreased with this option. Might be a bit niche though.

[X] Forebear's Blade - Fell-Handed Stroke
A trump card that brings about additional effects to hamper will, spirit and regen. I'll take this over increased might and agility to get some esoteric effects. Perhaps it can be used on mechas in the future to hamper their spirit?

EFB basically started the same way though. Hell, Nameless had even less characterization than the Hero.
It didn't feel like that, to me. For one thing, the very first EFB update included lots of information on the setting (while this quest includes details on the hero's home world that...we knew we would instantly leave upon ending chargen). And even the build votes included interesting tidbits on the setting, namely cultivation, the elvish magics, etc. Not to mention interesting summaries of our immediate family/mentor candidates.

So let's analyse our options:
[ ] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear - Cloud-shadow of the Forebear's might. Legendary strength and speed, and the resilience to exert them. Can be taken multiple times. [+Might, +Agility]
Same thing as last time, your straightforward more power option. Somewhat boring, but certainly useful.
-[ ] 2 Arete: Undying Echo - The Forebear could withstand unbelievable punishment, only to rise again. [+++Constitution]
Given our lack of access to healing abilities, this would probably be remarkably useful. On the other hand, Rihaku as confirmed that higher expenditure of Arete are generally more efficient, so it's bound to be somewhat inneficient.
[ ] Forebear's Blade - Fell-Handed Stroke - A devastating blow of unutterable magnificence from which no recovery is possible. A powerful, but draining strike that inflicts cursed wounds from which spirit and will leak as freely as blood. Resists healing.
Another option we've been offered before. Just as good of an option as last time, a powerful special attack that help us cover other medias of attack, by targeting spirit and will, is always going to be useful, particularly as we will eventually be able to spam it. On the other hand, given that it was offered twice in a row, it will probably be offered to us again, even if we don't pick it right now, so we don't necessarily need to pick immediately.
-[ ] 7 Arete: A Thousand Cuts - In the Forebear's grip could even a common knife blaze with fell power. All melee attacks made with the Forebear's Blade now apply cursed wounds. Septuples the power and speed of the Fell-Handed Stroke and allows it to be used with blade projections. Such horrific offensive power allows one to challenge foes vastly stronger.
We don't have enough Arete to pick this but let us analyse it anyway. It make us very effective against regenerating enemies, which is somewhat redundant with Gisena on our side, it allows us to potentially defeat enemies a lot more powerful than we could otherwise defeat, which when combined with Hunger could allow us to progress a lot faster, and finally, when we eventually become able to spam it, it becomes completely insane. Might be worth it eventually.
[ ] 2 Arete: Sword That Was Stolen - King of Thieves - It is the prerogative of the hero true to take the implements of his enemy and turn them against him. For what righteous weapon could deny the verity of his cause, or the valor with which he pursued it?

[++Agility, +Stealth, +Theft], and combat experience now yields some degree of thieving skills. Increases ease and power of the Abduction Forbidden Art.
That looks very strong? Stealing powerful artifacts to add them to our legend is very nice and it doesn't seem like the ability of our enemies to secure their possessions would scale nearly as well as their combat abilities. It also provide us with increased survivability from that agility and stealth and synergize well with our preceding choice of Nightmare Praetor. But it only cost 2 Arete, so it's probably weaker than it looks like.
[ ] 7 Arete: Evening Sky - Star-stuff and velvet darkness in a mantle like billowing clouds. The power of this mantle withstands supernal force and deflects the merely mundane, granting comprehensive protection against many of the ills of the mortal realm and beyond. Abducted by he who hungers, cast now into his thrall. He who dons this mantle speaks with the voice of Evening and shares its haunting majesty. Progression can unlock further abilities.

[++Protection, ++Charisma, grants superior resistance to a wide array of status effects such as poison, mental interference, suffocation, bleeding out, etc. Somewhat vulnerable to dispellation, but acts as an ablative layer to protect the wearer from such.]
It's really a shame we can't afford this one, because such a defense would be ridiculously useful and then it comes with free charisma and we can unlock even more abilities in the future. Oh well...
[ ] Hunger - Sleep of the Just - While sleeping, the character is massively more difficult to harm or physically move, and may choose to deny interruptions to his slumber, allowing his body to be used as a potent shield.
"allowing his body to be used as a potent shield", eh. That's quite the mental image! Reducing one vulnerability is always useful, particularly when one suffer from the Apocryphal Curse...
-[ ] 2 Arete: Slumber of Aeons - Increases well-rested threshold to 10 hours per day, but hours of sleep can now be banked up to a month in advance. Dramatically increases strength gained with age.
A powerful long term investment. The only problem is that the better long term investment is probably to bank our Arete so we don't have to use them so inefficiently...
-[ ] 25 Arete: Dead But Dreaming - That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons... Death merely induces slumber in the wearer until the heavens align for his emergence once more. Gain access to the [Outer Sorcery] skill, by which means one's dreams may twist reality towards one's purposes. Apply the effects of To Shatter Heaven to [Outer Sorcery].
Sounds really powerful! As a Progression-type Cursebearer this would eventually make us, pretty much, literally Azathoth (except smarter and, hopefully, less evil, of course). Plus, not dying when we're killed is, indeed, very nice. But look a that cost!
[ ] 2 Arete: Quelling - Instead halves the drain rate of the Decimator's Affliction for six months. Additional unknown effect.
In some way a downgrade, because half the drain rate remain present even during the first month. The unknown effect make this basically impossible to evaluate.
[ ] 7 Arete: Conclusion - Reduces progress by 25% instead, but lasts 2 years. It is easier for the hero to find some measure of peace with regards to the losses suffered at the Tyrant's hands, and is less likely to be emotionally compromised by events that remind him of such. Gives you the moral high ground and the ability to travel to lands barren of life, like outer space. Additional unknown effect.
Cost too much for us to get and basically impossible to evaluate because of the unknown effect, so not much to say here.

In conclusion I think I will go with

[X] 2 Arete: Sword That Was Stolen - King of Thieves
[X] Forebear's Blade - Fell-Handed Stroke

King of Thieves just look too good to pass up, even though I know I'm probably overestimating it. It improve our survivability, offer lots of long term potential and is a one-time offer, so we have to pick it now. Fell-Handed Stroke is just really powerful.

I'll also take the 0.05 signature bonus.

Honestly I think that this is rather a downgrade. We don't know about its additional effects be they positive or negative, but what we do know is that it no longer prevents Decimator's Affliction from draining the world. Hunger Sated at the moment, so long as we rigger it monthly, will straight up stop Decimators Affliction. So long as we can do 6ish battles against worthy foes per year it matches Quelling without us having to bother spending Arete, and its possible to get even greater effect. Quelling would be better if we actually grew greatly from training out of combat, but as is its better to just sate our Hunger as often as possible.

The real value of it will only show after we've talked to Gisena and got the first mitigation for our Curses. When going from tier 1 (skilled archmage) to tier 2 (energy of an entire universe) is so difficult, something that lets us effectively multiply our level of mitigation for periods of time is actually kinda god tier.

Plus, Hunger Sated doesn't work on all worthy foes. If I had to speculate, it probably only keys to stuff related to our past and our goals i.e. vengeance. We have no way to guarantee enemies that fit whatever criteria it runs on so making the most of it is incredible. And this is to say nothing of whatever additional effect it might have.

Imagine if we'd taken Feast of Lives too, that would be a temporary tier 3(!!!) mitigation in only a few days. Something on that level might even earn Accursed Favour.

"I'm hungry. After you're done, let's go fishing."

"F-fishing?"

"You use a rod and line to catch fish. Haven't heard of it?"

"That's rather primitive," Gisena interjected. "I've got a better idea! Find a school of fish, then drop chemical explosives near them. Water is hard to compress, so it'll be even more effective than on land! We can re-purpose the defunct munitions launcher on Verschlengorge's shoulder..."
Anyone have good ideas for fishing tactics? I'm thinking Gisena can use Tide of Nullity to limit any magic fish shenanigans then we can shoot out blade shadows to kill the fish we want.
Chemical explosives seem too disruptive to me (and do we even have a supply of them to use on that...?)
Also is it safe to have fresh raw alien fish at our Rank or do you think we need to cook it? 'cause sashimi is really great and could make a nice little picnic on the shore of this river..
[ ] Knowledge - Play to your relative strengths by getting Letrizia to divulge as much information as you can alongside Gisena. Build trust and rapport with your companions while trying to minimize battles.

Speak with Letrizia I, II
Speak with Gisena I

*Learn more about the polities you will eventually have to rule, likely by conquest
*Perhaps Letrizia understands something about the affinity linking you with Verschlengorge. She if anyone would know, being its pilot...
*A reasonably safe option
We ended up with this chosen. As we took Nightmare Praetor, that leaves us at Gisena++ and Letrizia+++ though I'm not sure if we had the same starting point for them. I think it leaves our Progression still secret? Though we can only guess whether they have noticed us change after these two kills.
Letrizia is young and so far seems convincingly uncertain and latching onto us as a lifeline to get out of a desperate situation where her mech is rather close to its last legs. However, she's still a Duchess who was trusted to pilot this thing, so I'm not yet convinced she isn't putting on an act. Further dialogue and exposure would likely make such an act hard to maintain unless we're seduced, so I expect to be more sure about her trustworthiness in a few updates, at least in terms of this adventure. Whether she can be trusted once we reach the city depends, I think, mostly on her incentives. We will need to keep those in mind as the decision of how or if we enter society approaches. Given our Doom of the Tyrant, I think we have major potential for blunders at that juncture; it makes me think we need to be prepared to simply never enter the city depending on how things go. Turning back and continuing to adventure until we can kill a full strength mech seems like a viable plan, though not what I'd prefer if we are able to find a way to interact with society without major risk. Returning to Letrizia, though, I think we haven't given her any exceptional reasons so far to trust or be attached to us, so how she will behave once she reaches a position of safety remains deeply uncertain.
Gisena appears to have never lost composure in front of us so far. Personally I think her mask isn't far off how she really feels, but we can in no way be certain of that. So far her actions seem to focus on navigating this situation to survive as best she knows how with particular focus on managing her adventuring partners - as well as having fun while she does it. That said, she hasn't taken any of her opportunities to betray us and is a canny combatant. Further, we've had our share of banter to potentially build rapport. In the end I think trust is a choice and with Gisena I think it's a worthwhile one.

That's my thoughts on our situation with them anyway. I think how we relate to these two character is a key factor in how we extend our plan outwards. We're currently adventuring to the city - but what comes next? Do we try to get a ship and leave? Attempt to accrue power within and around the city? Recuperate and resupply then go back in for adventure? Seek to stay with the Duchess for whatever it is she plans to do next - and if so do we try to work around Doom of the Tyrant or subordinate her to us? Do we want to stay around either or both of these women long term?
Personally I'm warming up to the idea of going back to adventuring in this area after we escort the Duchess - provided we can secure means to navigate or are able to profit from the navigable areas.

At this point I think getting into the giant robot is somewhat inevitable
I disagree!!
I think we can do just fine with other skills and powersets.

[ ] Speak with Letrizia II - Explain the matter of your affinity with Verschlengorge. Perhaps she has some insight? Req. Speak with Letrizia I. Additional ++Letrizia, ?
Hmmmm. Will this conversation be more productive know that we have an inkling of what the affinity might be? It would require us to reveal the Decimator's Affliction though. Maybe we can use our superb charisma to dance around the topic?

Taking Undying Echo right now would be similar to grabbing the Beyond version of Prodigious Might back in EFB, by my reckoning. I guess that means Nightmare Praetor is like going FB on the Ring.

Hm... I wouldn't put the hero's charisma at 'superb,' he's still not on Gisena's level, but he's definitely more capable than most. "Very competent," perhaps; a bit above that when well-rested.

Of course, if you can take Evening Sky it's a different story!

I think it'd be deeply unwise to reveal the Decimator's Affliction to Letrizia even by accident. It dies our life and death to her in a way that is not worth getting more knowledge about the mech.

I realized a potential Worst-Case Scenario for Quelling. We have even less affinity with the Robot for 6 months. If nothing else though, at least we're bolting Nightmare Praetor and Auspicious Vanguard together. It doesn't seem like a bad build. We extend the foundation so we have more room to put Arete built things on top of it.

Don't tease. I already like that option since it sounds like it would lead somewhere like Endless Skies but not only we don't have the arete, I also prefer the Dragon theme :V

Ah, yes.
25Ar/2.2 = 11.4 BP
Essentially slightly beyond an Even Further Beyond option.
Also a synergy with Accretion.
This... is Cthulhu level of power. Straight up.
And I want it so badly.

Sadly, the amount of Arete necessary? It would take multiple people pledging to go Even Further Beyond on advertising this quest - tattooing it on their exposed bodies or going out in the streets, talking about it with random passerbys. Going from home to home, spreading the word of Rihaku.

[X] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear

I don't really like this sleepiness upgrade nearly as much. Meh. King of Thieves is kind of tempting, but I think we can afford to save for at least a 7-Arete option. Plus, risk is not super high since we are going Knowledge.

Good thing that I prefer Slumber of Aeons.
