-[ ] 25 Arete: Dead But Dreaming - That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons... Death merely induces slumber in the wearer until the heavens align for his emergence once more. Gain access to the [Outer Sorcery] skill, by which means one's dreams may twist reality towards one's purposes. Apply the effects of To Shatter Heaven to [Outer Sorcery].
Damn it, I want this. I want it so badly.

[Arete] is the equivalent of Beyond Points from Even Further Beyond, at a rate of ~2.2 Arete = 1 Beyond Point.
Dead but Dreaming is the real deal, guys. It's an EFB, and we know how much of a deal those were last time. Let's get our omake engines revving! I'm going to try and write up something for hypothetical Dead But Dreaming Hunger tomorrow after work.

It may just be because I got the most invested in it, but my personal favorite Rihaku quest so far was the previous one, Even Further Beyond. The way we kept the thread alive through winter and managed to actually finish the quest just really stuck with me.

Same. Trying to Index stuff now makes me wonder if my coffee was cut with cocaine back then because trying to finish 750 pages between votes would make me drop dead on the spot. Also, the fight with Zang Kong and the epilogue were both absolutely amazing on so many levels. Also also my guy Liefang. Also also also Baenlixnaire and the Diagram. I'm hopeful this quest will inspire such ardour in time.

And of course my OTP, the Nameless Prince and Meiling.

So, we realistically have 4 options, pick two.
Echo, Stroke, King of Thieves, Sleepiness Level 2.
Also, 5 ways to spend 2 Arete. Con+++, King of Thieves, Sleepiness Upgrade, or Decimation mitigation, or Save. Pick 1.
Pretty small vote, then.
King of Thieves+Echo,
King of Thieves+Stroke,
King of Thieves+Sleepiness

Echo+Stroke+(Con, Decimation mitigation, or Save)(3)
Echo+Sleepiness+(Con, Sleepiness Upgrade, Decimation mitigation, or Save)(4)

Stroke+Sleepiness+(Sleepiness Upgrade, Decimation mitigation, or Save)(3)

Total of 13 coherent plans. So this is actually tiny. Rihaku wrote out too many options we can't have. (well, maybe we could get to 4 Arete by the end of the vote, maybe even 6 or 7, which would complicate it slightly more.)

Going from EFB, we generated ~1 BP/ update, with extremely intense fanworking. Equating to Arete, we'd generate ~2.5 Arete/update.

If you get to a point where you have 7+ Arete, we can always do a consolidation in light of the new options. I would strongly suggest everyone already have a vote in place before trying to go for things you can't afford... you're about as likely to get Dead But Dreaming at this juncture as you were the Logos!

Actually less, since EFB had about triple the post count at this point...

[ ] 2 Arete: Quelling - Instead halves the drain rate of the Decimator's Affliction for six months. Additional unknown effect.
Honestly I think that this is rather a downgrade. We don't know about its additional effects be they positive or negative, but what we do know is that it no longer prevents Decimator's Affliction from draining the world. Hunger Sated at the moment, so long as we rigger it monthly, will straight up stop Decimators Affliction. So long as we can do 6ish battles against worthy foes per year it matches Quelling without us having to bother spending Arete, and its possible to get even greater effect. Quelling would be better if we actually grew greatly from training out of combat, but as is its better to just sate our Hunger as often as possible.

Personally vote wise I'm thinking the two Forebearer's Blade base options to boost our combat power a bit and then save up Arete for Dead but Dreaming, possibly buying King of Thieves. Conclusion is fucking nifty as hell, but it'll probably come up again and we've got time right now. Definitely worth thinking about tho.

Huh. I got 11. Maybe because I considered Arete upgrades to be options in their own right/part of the two unless they're Quelling. (Edit: Facepalms at self after checking again how options work)
-------------------------------------------
Echo of the Forebear+Undying Echo = Possibly Recover from our internal injuries, get stupendous physical durability and more physical power
Echo of the Forebear+Fell-Handed Stroke = Respec into something resembling an Auspicious Vanguard Type Build, very consideration worthy
Echo of the Forebear+Fell-Handed Stroke+Quelling = As above but you want to draw out the Decimator's Mitigation longer and get a mystery box
Echo of the Forebear+King of Thieves = The Guerilla's friend buildwise
Echo of the Forebear+Sleep of the Just = This Sounds hilarious and I like it, physical enhancement combined with assassination insurance.
Echo of the Forebear+Sleep of the Just+Quelling = As above but you want to draw out the Decimator's Mitigation longer and get a mystery box

Fell-Handed Stroke+King of Thieves = An assassination build
Fell-Handed Stroke+Sleep of the Just = Gets us an Esoteric attack and assassination insurance. Just needs stealth training to complete it.
Fell-Handed Stroke+Sleep of the Just+Quelling = As above but you want to draw out the Decimator's Mitigation longer and get a mystery box

King of Thieves+Sleep of the Just = Guerilla warfare with assassination insurance.

Sleep of the Just+Slumber of Aeons = Maybe? I'm not sure what I think of this.

They don't use the same formula, so it wouldn't be equivalent, but it's 2.2 Arete to 1 BP.

You can pick any of the free options and 1 option that costs 2 Arete at this juncture, yes. It's a fairly simple vote!

You don't know whether Hunger Sated is repeatable, or under what conditions it triggers. You weren't offered it for beating the dragon, which actually gave more base power than this guy.

[X] Hunger - Sleep of the Just
-[X] 2 Arete: Slumber of Aeons
[X] Forebear's Blade - Fell-Handed Stroke

Gisena continues to deliver and further cement her place as best girl.

I want sleep of the just because the idea of just going to sleep and letting Gisena use our body as shield is extremely amusing. Slumber of Aeons eliminates one of the main drawbacks of Slumber by letting us bank hours of sleep plus it increases the passive bonus which is great. Fell Handed stroke because this last fight showed we lack a decisive finishing move against things in our own weightclass.

While higher Arete options are more efficient, I don't think we're in a place where we can be worried about efficiency right now. We need to actually survive until we can make it to support and civilization. We've just seen how even relative scrubs can wound us, get something that will solve that and prevent a death spiral.

[X] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear - Cloud-shadow of the Forebear's might. Legendary strength and speed, and the resilience to exert them. Can be taken multiple times. [+Might, +Agility]
-[X] 2 Arete: Undying Echo - The Forebear could withstand unbelievable punishment, only to rise again. [+++Constitution]
[X] Forebear's Blade - Fell-Handed Stroke - A devastating blow of unutterable magnificence from which no recovery is possible. A powerful, but draining strike that inflicts cursed wounds from which spirit and will leak as freely as blood. Resists healing.

actually, nah.

Actually less, since EFB had about triple the post count at this juncture...

Xianxia has actually become surprisingly popular on SV with multiple quests running right now, though I guess the stuff going on might also play a part. Other than that, do you have any thoughts on why this might be the case?

Hmm, we were offered it implicitly in Time and Tides.

The big question, really, is: Does selecting an Arete benefit for Hunger Sated affect future procs of Hunger Sated? Because this would be highly helpful in mitigating that curse.

Quite an interesting fight! It also shows that Hunger has... quite a bit of anger inside of him.

Now, question, if we take an option without arete, can we upgrade it later, or does it work like EFB?

Fair on both accounts. I will hold out hope! But, hope for the future, rather than for the present. Rune's vote seem amenable to me. I am still going to work on a Dead But Dreaming omake though.

Maybe hunger sated triggers when we have an emotional investment in the fight? It could also just have to be a human or sapient in order to count but given hunger intensifies our emotions I'd guess it has something to do with that. It's also interesting that we now feel less affinty to the mech than before. I guess it's always hungry?

I want to save for Dead but Dreaming. This should give us a good short term combat boost.

I'm guessing Hunger Sated trigged because the pirate reminded us of the Tyrant.

Dead but Dreaming is really cool but I'm super dubious we'll ever get 25 arete with this level of thread activity, much less 25 at once. Just take sleep of the just and enjoy the ability to fall asleep during a tough fight and be practically immune to harm!

I suspect that our affinity to the mech has something to do with our emotional state. Lord Hunger is recovering from basically being crippled, and the mecha is also stated to be crippled as well, in power at least. Unshattered would likely have produced significant affinities. It would certainly allow a strong affinity even with the other builds if true: In all of them the Hero is significantly diminished from where they were before.

If this is correct, then as Lord Hunger continues to grow in power or rather regain his old strength, his affinity with the mech will continue to decrease. Then again, it might be due to personality.

EFB had a catchier name? I dunno, it just had a larger audience from the outset.

There are a number of trends which may be contributing. SV's daily users / day is basically stagnant compared to SB. Don't know if that's due to site policies, marketing or some other factor. As to why the existing user base isn't posting as much, could be any number of factors. All we can do is create the right incentives and hope the baseline conditions are amenable to catalyze success, or move on to other ventures if turns out they're not.

The big question, really, is: Does selecting an Arete benefit for Hunger Sated affect future procs of Hunger Sated? Because this would be highly helpful in mitigating that curse.

You don't have any concrete information on the mechanics of A Hunger Sated. Probably best to assume it will occur infrequently if at all.

Now, question, if we take an option without arete, can we upgrade later, or does it work like EFB?

It depends. King of Thieves and Evening Sky are both unique to this update. As for the others... upgrading an existing parameter to achieve a given function is within the remit of Progresison, though it may not be as efficient as an intuitive leap that achieves it wholesale.

I guess it's always hungry?

You could say that...

I'm pretty sure our affinity to it is related to the curse given that's it's lessened immediately after we mitigated it for a time.

King of Thieves is kind of tempting for starting a Guerilla warfare/Assassination build with Fell-Handed Stroke. Might help us reduce our risk of injury as the journey goes further.

I somewhat feel like you like to mock us of Logos, forevermore outside of our reach!

Good to know. Basically, progression will likely give an steady progress with our stuff, while Arete is likely to give us "jumps".

With that in mind...

[X] Forebear's Blade - Echo of the Forebear - Cloud-shadow of the Forebear's might. Legendary strength and speed, and the resilience to exert them. Can be taken multiple times. [+Might, +Agility]
[X] Forebear's Blade - Fell-Handed Stroke - A devastating blow of unutterable magnificence from which no recovery is possible. A powerful, but draining strike that inflicts cursed wounds from which spirit and will leak as freely as blood. Resists healing.

I don't think we particularly need the low-cost arete options right now, especially since their bonus is comparatively smaller. Way I see it, better to save up for a much bigger "jump".
