If the campaign begins begins in summer, it will most likely last until the winter. Beyond that, I can see 2 issues with starting in the winter. One, considering we're already outnumbered 2 to 1, the last thing we want is attrition eating away at our already meager numbers. Two, waiting most of the year to go on a campaign will give the Mongols a massive head-start on us, which might piss off some of our lords who have land closer to the frontier whose territory is going to get torn to shreds while we wait. Also, considering how long it's going to take to get our combined forces across Russia, a good deal of the campaign (should we start in winter) will probably take place in the spring.

Vasily's expertise as a Winter Soldier means his troops take no attrition from winter on the march, and it gives him a sizable bonus to his battle rolls against other commanders that are not also winter soldiers.

It could be good to strike fast and put the Mongols on their heels during the winter, with the later reinforcements enabling further capitalization during the more usual campaign seasons.

EDIT: Vasily is also an Organizer and a Night Fighter. The former will only magnify the advantage Vasily should get from fighting during winter, and the latter plays into the theme of striking at unconventional times, keeping the Mongols off guard.

The problem isn't with marching during the winter. In the post it is mentioned that:

We'll be fine with moving our troops and equipment through the snow, but we'll still suffer attrition while garrisoned in Novgorod. With us being as outnumbered as we are, the last thing that we need is to suffer attrition of any kind.

I misread / misunderstood the options. Summer with Zima's forces is probably the best.

    Just a guess: he got castrated during his imprisonment, his brother didn't, and so between pain and desire to ensure his family line survived he went bug-fuck nuts.

    Either that or there was enough inbreeding in the family to make him psychotic and sterile.
