Shepard Quest Mk VI, Technological Revolution

Um, yikes. This kind of makes our 1st gen Cabira into a bit of a paper tiger. Most of the charm of the first-generation Cabira was in how lasers just sort of bypass everything in ME-land, other than TIR-equipped starships. But, if rad shielding suddenly becomes a solved problem, then our GRASER-ships flying around with gigawatt gamma ray lasers just went from a major threat to a paper tiger.

It's still got a gigawatt laser. And even rad shielding melts (or burns or what ever).

Let me pull up my laser spread sheet... let's see one gigawatt yeah... Gamma Ray. Well if I ignore aspect ratio of the hole the thing can slice dreadnaught sized blocks of pure carbon in half at 20,000km with a 0.13 second blast.

Including aspect ratio (I hear 1:20 for a drilled laser hole is reasonable) a one second blast eats a 13.16 cm wide and 2.63 meter deep hole for a one second blast.

If we're going this route, then good thing we know this now, so we can swap out variable wavelength lasers for advanced ammo mods+ship-scale ammo mods+the black f*cking gun and jump straight to black hole MACs. I think we can pull that off before the Skylian Blitz; we'll just have less free time for biotech research.

I'm willing to discuss the issue its just that barring extreme levels of radiation it seems to be a mostly dealt with issue. A lot of setting tech should be flinging gamma and x-rays around like crazy, but it's not an issue. Also the whole radiation in space thing. So either I can say well bioware forgot something again and get nowhere or I can conclude that its been dealt with somehow.

It's only two chapters in so I can't really say if it's good or not. What I do know so far is that the Krogan scientist appears to be a catholic who is constantly dodging assassination attempts.

Why do I feel a genophage cure combined with a poor understanding of the situation on the part of the author going to show up at some point?

How good are the holograms? Are they in color?

Most holograms are mono color or a very small range however full RL color (see Pinnacle Station) can be done it's just expensive. Your Training grounds use ME fields and Holograms to simulate terrain and enemies.

BTW @Hoyr, I'm having trouble figuring out what the vehicle/ship scale weapon mods get us, as opposed to the ammo mods side of things. Most of the weapon mods in ME are either related to imaging, which are separate techs for us, or things that just don't apply to vehicles, like magazine expansions, rail extensions, etc.

Wait Imaging? Huh?

Rail Extensions could still apply to some vehicular weapons. It'd be a bit silly on ships though

Fire Rate is another.

Targeting/Aiming Systems.

Stability systems?

Different materials? (IDK super light vs high performance)

Any other modification that's to the weapon other then what it shoots?

Weapons mods is basically saying that parts of the weapon are built modular and that you can be flexible and add and remove systems. There's a bit of over lap with hyper modularity in the design space... but its also the packages.

I am a fan of polyamory but this path basically leads to Shepard's Harem the Quest. Are you prepared for that, Hoyr? ;)

You can try... Quick some one get me a demotivational poster. Line 1 Big: "You Can Try" Line 2 Small: "but you'll probably fail."

Anyway it would take work lots of work. Not to mention that Asari for one are actually quite monogamous when they marry (GM added setting aspect based on in game material).

I do want Revy/Liara to be a couple. They're cute together.

Just recall that this is pre-ME1 Liara. So her blood currently has a very low percentage of badass and a lot of optimistic nerd. Not that those are mutually exclusive or anything.

I seem to remember Liara being okay with Shepard proposing a threeway relationship in ME1. Or at least, not expressing any anger or disgust about it after the third party (Ashley) turned it down and walked away. (She also mentioned understanding the concept of jealousy. which seems to imply it doesn't come up much for Asari.)

Not trying to argue with GM (at all.) just throwing out a character note that could be interesting. I.E. most Asari are very monogamous in established relationships, Liara's openness to multiple partners is considered unusual.

I tend to prefer OT3s over Otps so I'm always in favor of a well done harem/poly relationship. (My favorite mass effect ship is Tali/F!shep/Garrus soo...) As far as this quest goes, it's just another over the top thing that crazy Paragon Industry Ceo has gotten up to, the news sites will drop it after the next time Revy up-ends a entire sector of the galactic market.

On a entirely different and possibly mutually exclusive note: Let's bag ourselves a Krogan. Nobody does Krogan romances, lets be trend setters! (Assuming we don't just build our own lover. Presumably with A.I.)

Well, considering their lifespan, and the stigma associated with Asari/Asari couples, and taking into account the lifespan of all of the other species (including Krogan; how many Krogans are willing to give up the chance to die pointlessly?) they would probably be culturally inclined to have several partners over their lifespan.
A possible derivative of this behavior is a willingness to have multiple partners, at the same time.

Hey Hoyr, I saw you look at Sages Geeks Guide: Core quest, would you ever implement the style for it? Like if not now, then the next thread?

Which will produce interesting cultural effects in the Asari when we get around to solving death by aging.

Also strongly effected: Salarians.

Not particularly effected: Krogans. Geth. Old people. (Regardless of species.)

Strangely enough, they did a study on who should be kicked out of the science labs, which was brought about by some sexist comment from a guy who is more or less a hermit in the scientific community because of it...

They found out that the 'old ones' should be kicked out.

Its commented on in this months NewSciencist magazine, if anyone is interested in looking it up.

Not trying to argue with GM (at all.) just throwing out a character note that could be interesting. I.E. most Asari are very monogamous in established relationships, Liara's openness to multiple partners is considered unusual.

The Asari you encounter that talk about their relationship are all pair bonds now some of that could be bioware and RL expectations, but also consider the Asari bonding ability only seems to work on one person at at time. Thus the idea. The one Asari on Ilium calls it a permanent bond when wondering if she should get involved with a krogan. Asari seem to take it very seriously. Obviously they do have a concept of "divorce" as it where, see Liara's parents.

Note this is for Matron and later stage Asari the ones that marry and settle down. Maiden Asari... well they're basically the sort that'll try anything at least once.

Liara in ME1 is technically a Maiden though she acts kinda odd for one (responsible PhD job), but at the same time you can see her Maiden inclinations underneath. There's some indication that she may have entered the Matron stage early, post ME1.

I've looked at the scene in question, Ashley objects from what I can see and Liara says nothing afterward. Early on she says "I may not know much about human relationships", if there's one major trait Asari have culturally its cultural flexibility. Your culture does it that way okay I'll try it. It maybe less she had little/no issue and more that she though of it as a human thing and once it was no longer an issue with dropped it. Or "Hey I don't have to worry about that it's done, and I get the guy. Yay!"

Not to mention it wasn't a marriage but a lets try a relationship/I like you.

Asari tend to invest heavily in their main relationship once its formed. Thing is for most races the person is dead in under a couple of centuries. The Relationship has an expiration date and its in an amount of time that an Asari would consider small. Hell they collect mementos of their partners.

Also what the hell is it with bioware and fish? There's an in joke there I bet.

Hey Hoyr, I saw you look at Sages Geeks Guide: Core quest, would you ever implement the style for it? Like if not now, then the next thread?

In what way? CKII style? Breaking a turn up into stages? Some other aspect?

Let me start by saying I really like the ideas that go into Sage's quests. While I'm not 100% behind the magnitude of social linking done for every quest its a great mechanic even if implemented in a limited fashion. It goes along well with my "Every NPC is a plot hook". (As well as every location having at least one interesting thing to poke at).

As for breaking it up... I'm doing that, may try another scheme for next turn... well see.

As for the CKII style... well If the players were all (or at least the majority including the regulars) okay with it and said, "Yes please Hoyr convert it to a CKII style it'll make everything a bit easier." I'd be like sure lets do that. Gimme a bit.

I'm totally floating around an idea for a CKII style game set in the BattleTach universe in my head. CKII is a system made for running settings with a feudal system, the game itself is set up for the middle ages. BattleTech is a setting with feudal empires in space with big stompy robots. Frankly the fact that I haven't heard of a BT CKII mod makes me sad :(. Anyway call it Periphery Nation Quest. SO yes CKII system is good and also includes both national and personal level stuff.

Anyway yeah... I've been mostly modding the existing system, but if a lot of players got together and said hey go ahead and switch to something that's more manageable... well I could live with that. I need to try to do some more fixing to this one any way.

So others will answer and post links but here my answer.

Age of Strife on this board is a good example.
CORE on SB is also a good example.

Anyway CKII is a game, Crusader Kings II, it's pretty fun. You play as a character from a dynasty and run your fiefdom (Anything from count to emperor), when your character dies you play as you heir. No heir of you dynasty you lose.

CKII style games are based on this. You play as a character that controls some entity (usually a country but a business or organization works too).

The PC has a set of leadership stats the usual ones are

Diplomacy: Effects actions that involve talking to others, both increasing success and number of actions, also effects how much people like you
Stewardship: Effects economic actions and general construction, also generally increase the profit you get from thing like taxes
Martial: Effects militaristic actions in both number and success (Includes building up the military, attacking, actual combat)
Intrigue: The spycraft stat, for actions involving murder, theft, but also the prevention of such things.
Learning: AKA the research stat.

Some include an additional stat like magic or piety.

The character will also probably have a set of personal stats. Personal combat, health, attractiveness etc.

On top of the stats are the traits. Traits very but they will often give bonus and penalties to stats thought hey may do other things. Genius for example gives +5 to all stats, Greedy is -1 diplomacy and +10% tax (or profit I guess). Link for CKII traits as an example. There are also the option for other bonuses. Some traits lock out action or force others as they are personality elements.

You can gain advisers that supplement your stats for leadership, one per stat.

Getting married will often also give you bonuses. Its a dynastic game duh.

Play has the GM offer a set of actions for each leadership stat and a set of personal actions. The players pick from those using their limited action pool for each stat. Then the actions are resolved and a new set is offered. To keep things less complicated the stat-actions are usual processed one or two at a time.

Special events (Some wars, combat, possibly other things) usually have the current turn suspended and goes into special event mode.

CKII quests tend to be low on write-ins but their not impossible.

Make sense?

Edit: Obviously changes for this game would have to be made, but that's the general idea.

I like the CKII style for its simplicity, but I tend to rage at it a lot.

Depending on how a GM handles roll penalties and bonuses over several turns (like for research, or construction) you can be royally fucked by bad rolls, or succeed wildly.

This is especially glaring in combat, which I think the CKII system is only 'okay' at. When you have an excellent player write-in, plus bonuses because of the commander and your units veteran stats...and then you roll poorly, or your enemy rolls exceptionally well, and now the GM has to think about how that would play out. (Or the reverse, when the players throw out a Hail Mary plan that somehow works.) That happens in research too, with poor rolls destroying what should otherwise be a simple project.

Also, fuck diplomacy and intrigue. The way CKII handles that (or the GMs running CKII quests seem handle it) I think is the weakest part of the entire system, because so very much of it is dependent on dice.

Haha, I guess most of my issues with come from the fact that far too much of it is at the whim of the dice, and it's hard to hedge your bets. My experience with it is a ton of 'all or nothing' rolls which either have you win big or scramble to salvage what was a perfectly good plan (the exception being when there's just so many units in combat that law of averages starts to show up). Granted, I have seen it done well. Mostly though those quests were 'grander' in scope, with players having to focus on a lot more options over a greater period of time, but at the cost of charecter development and interaction. I think it's a much less 'personal' way of GMing. You get the big picture well, but tend to lose out on the little stuff.

I'd have to see how Hoyr decided to use it though, I guess.

EDIT: Oops. This came off harsher then I intended.

Makes sense, but the influence of dice isn't something I like very much. Personally, in general, current system is somewhat ok to me. I haven't had any experience with CKII system, so I really can't comment on it.

Yeah. The dice influence is what I hate about it. That was never more apparent in then in A Dynasty of Dynamic Achoholism (which is a quest here on SV that I enjoy lurking in) that tends to have some pretty tsundere dice. A whole military campaign was launched after a nat 1 was rolled on our yearly random encounter and the nation was invaded by vampires. (Their leader assaulted the castle and killed one of the PC's sons and also assaulted and heavily wounded the PC's wife).

On the other hand, there has been a fair number of high combat rolls when the players desperately needed them.

So, dice. That's what CKII is to me. Lots and lots of dice.

Oh, and I don't think we ever wrote out actual specs and prices for the Hydra cluster-missiles we've sort of been talking up for awhile now.
Tentative pricing for Hydra:

First off, we don't actually have a unit cost for our Sagitta micro-missiles at all. Given that they're supposed to be around the size of a rifle bullet, and that they should be a fraction of the cost of a Pilium rocket (which are themselves about 20K each, given the costs we've outlined already) I'd estimate say 2.5K each? Times 1,000, plus say 50 Pilium rockets as well for a little extra penetrating power, plus 500K for a single-use shell for them to ride in, for a total of 4 million/17 Production a pop? @Hoyr Sound fair to you, given that they're mostly filling the role of anti-fighter/GARDIAN chaff?

The various scopes/infrared scopes, and other accuracy-enhancement mods.
Weapons mods is basically saying that parts of the weapon are built modular and that you can be flexible and add and remove systems. There's a bit of over lap with hyper modularity in the design space... but its also the packages.
Okay, I have to admit I do like some of the upgrades and mods, but some of them, especially the scopes and combat sensors, seem like they'd be entirely separate systems on vehicles and ships, and stuff like Ultralight Materials don't seem to make much sense in a vehicle/ship context.

Assuming the above Hydra pricing is right, here's my vote for Company Actions

Highlights:
  • Mostly the same as @UberJJK's plan
  • Includes gigawatt lasers this turn, for use in mining lasers.
  • Adds Warp Barriers to our Gladius fighters
  • Trades the Demeter expansion (which we can get next quarter) in order to properly equip our Gladius fighters with anti-ship and Hydra missiles. Demeter's probably a bad idea for now anyway, since we're not allowed to build Repulsor transports and are saving Multi-core eezo drives for the Cabira. Fehl Prime or Terra Nova might be better, maybe Therum since it apparently has both Prothean ruins and abundant heavy metals.
  • Offers up to 1 billion to speed up the research project on the "secret room" in Mars Archives, with hopes of getting more info on Reapers more quickly; I really want to find out about Indoctrination early so we can start looking into countermeasures.

The Quarians don't seem to be eager to set up shop in the hostile Terminus, but maybe a welcoming gesture from a friendly, up-and-coming race might be more appealing. Alternatively, see what it would take to set up Alliance colony worlds, starting with Mindoir, as "safe" places for Quarian pilgrimages.

Marketing
[X] Begin drumming up interest in our new line of portable, modular, colony/space stations in a box
-[X] Show the demonstration models off at trade shows and the like.
[X] Get people interested in Hyper-modular buildings for convention halls, stadiums and the like.

Politics/Lobbying
[X] Shift Repulsor lobbying away from any mention of exporting to other nations and focus on sale to humans, specifically those within the Alliance.
-[X] Counter arguments as to it's capability as a weapon with strict controls designed to ensure starship engine repulsors remain starship engine repulsors.
[X] Obtain a secret military patent for our Anti-starship missiles. Make it clear we intend to non-elusively license them to other human companies to produce.

[X] Reverse engineer and start selling "genuine prothean dark energy blades" (with installed safeties) - hanar at least would surely buy those en-mass

Hmm, sounds nice @TheEyes , you could add asking Liara to help with biotic training since she is there at the moment. Rahna in this story mentioned that we need more experienced, possibly alien, teacher and Liara is very good commando trained biotic. As bonus, it helps with the friendship.

Asari are natural bitocs, so they do it more instinctially. I an not sure, tha she can help much, still she can be good sparring partner.
Dor migh be slighty more useful for boitic training but, I would prefer professional instructors.

Well, IC it has been said that the Asari have the best biotic trainers, even for other races (I think), so we should at least give it a try with Liara. Of course, that might be just for those professionals who focus teaching biotics to other races, but again, trying once with Liara shouldn't hurt.

Hey, at least we can ask her and Gaver Dor if they can recommend any biotics trainers, either for us or the Academy.
