SayakaQuest: Trauma is a Thing

On a whim, I did a google search of the translated meaning of Miho, followed by the meaning of Miki.

Both came out to around the ballpark of 'beautiful'. Miho Miki. 'Beautiful Beautiful'. Redundant Redundancy.

Sayaka's grandparents were very subtle dicks.
One meaning of "Sayaka" is "beautiful."

Sayaka's name also means "Beautiful Beautiful."

Rumor has it she has an American cousin named Stanley Yelnats.

I hope not, because sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and it'd be nice if everything that fucked up wasn't a Witch.

But yeah, let's check it out.

We could just tell her via telepathy.

Didn't Moid say ealier that it's not actually telepathy in this quest and we need Kyubey to act as a router?
I never got the impression that it was particularly range-limited by that factor- it seemed more like an 'if he's in the same city it works' thing. Of course, that's only my interpretation- not sure the exact limits that Moid's put on it.

If you can do it, then he's there. He's always there. He's in one place. He's in all of them. Long-distance is out of the question, though.

So telepathy will work.

[X] Let her go to the hotel.
-[X] "You know, it just occurred to me, which hotel?"
-[X] Telepathically tell her your concern about the possibility that a witch caused the chemical fire at your mom's job, and that you're gonna go check it out and make sure you're not just being paranoid. Does she want to come along?
-[X] Wish her a good night, either way.

Schrodinger's Incubator.
Can't really blame Schrodinger for animal cruelty, then. Kyuubey, at best, qualifies as a plant.

I always wondered one thing about Kyubey, is he using clones and just upload it's consciousness in them or is she use them as proxy a la Hive Queen? I think I saw somewhere good Hive Queen Incubator picture
It's never been stated if the bodies are drones he controls remotely or if his mind's actually in the bodies and is transferred to a new one when it is created.

I personally subscribe to the former, as the bodies are explicitly stated to not be their "original" bodies and are purpose-build for magical girl contracting. Either way, Kyubey's body tells us what his species really looks like about as much as an Abrams would tell an alien race what a human looks like.

You don't want to see what his species really looks like. At least, that's the interpretation that I'll be using here.

One thing's for sure, they definitely don't meet human definitions of "cute," seeing as how their attempt after God-knows how long they've spent trying to get it right is still struggling to make it out of the Uncanny Valley.

Does it really matter? I'm not even going to try to understand it, though I'll refer to Kyuubey as 'he' for familiarity's sake.

As something incapable of feeling emotion, it's as alien as a human's capable of interacting with on a social level. We can try to predict it's actions by looking at the most logical options, but we'll almost always fail, since there are options we don't even recognize as valid because it's just so utterly against our nature we don't even think about it.

My suggestion for the future is that we don't assume Kyuubey (or the hivemind that is controlling the 'body' known as incubator) will do anything at all. Let's instead think of what a plant would do in his place, since that's the most similar creature we can relate to.

And, uh... Krahe? Those are both terrifying, in their own ways. I don't want to know how you stumbled on them.

And that is a dangerous point of view to take, because Kyuubey is very much predictable. Because it is also forced to interact with humans, it must have in turn a behavioural model for predicting humans. This model might be black boxed, in that it is a cause-and-effect model without an attempt at causality, since it doesn't understand emotions, but it must exist, and that suffices for its manipulations of humans, and for us in turn to predict its likely behaviour.

And besides, Moid, who is writing Kyuubey, isn't an Incubator.

...

Probably not, anyway.

While I see how that allows it to understand us, to an extent, how on earth does that allow us to understand it? Particularly because its behavioral model is apparently flawed. Not for it's purposes, no, but for general interaction? If it had a perfect understanding of humans, we could predict it's actions based on it understanding us. Since it apparently isn't, and we don't know the extent to which it doesn't know us, we don't know when it will do something a human would never do, simply because it doesn't know a human can't or won't.

And that confused the hell out of me, too, but I think there was a point in there somewhere.

So... you're human, right? Or human-ish? (Spacebattles plays host to a vast array of human and non-human entities, so I guess I shouldn't assume.)

You can experience emotions, right? So you understand other people, right?

So you can predict other people perfectly, yeah? No problem whatsoever, mm?

Kyuubey doesn't have a perfect predictive model.

Neither do humans.

Neither does the entire body of human knowledge up to this point.

Also, not having emotions =/= logical. You can not have emotions and still be as irrational as they come.

[x] "You know, it just occurred to me, which hotel?"

"Uh..." She looked at a map. "This one."

You look and see that it's a hop, skip, and a jump away from your school. It's not far. "...Oh. Uh...okay."

-[X] Telepathically tell her your concern about the possibility that a witch caused the chemical fire at your mom's job, and that you're gonna go check it out and make sure you're not just being paranoid. Does she want to come along?

'...Can you hear me like this?'

'Oh, you actually know about the telepathy thing?' She scratches her face.

'Yeah.' You say. 'I actually knew about it before I became a magical girl.' You sigh. 'Anyway...I think a witch might have caused the chemical fire at my mom's job. I want to go check it out.' You smirk. 'Wanna come with?'

She nods. '...What the hell. I'm pretty sure you want to blow off some steam, so I'll hang back unless you really need the help.'

'...Whoa, you're gonna let me have the grief seed?'

'Yeah.' She says. 'I mean, you're my friend, right?'

If we do find a Witch, I'm kind of hoping it's a pushover. The last two were serious business, a punk like that goofy TV Witch Sayaka first fought would be a nice break.

On a related note, how are we going to handle the issue with Familiars when it inevitably comes up?
