Or there is another hypothesis - developers know there is a chance of a game shitting the bed so they put women and minorities front and centre in the hopes of setting up a scapegoat. It's a variant of the glass cliff.

That is the dumbest hypothesis I've ever seen.

Have you actually played the game, or even seen a playthrough of it, or are you just talking out your ass?

Or they just drop the ball with the game design and story and angry "fans" are blowing things out of proportion (as usual)

*Rotates their head a full 360 degrees* What the what? What in the actual flying fuck are you smoking dude? "They put women and minorities front and centre in the hopes of setting up a scapegoat."

I know what these words mean individually, but when put together you're speaking gibberish. Are you trying to say they made the protags women just so they could go "Clearly it's because we made them chicks that the game is bad"? I'm really struggling to wrap my head around what you're trying to say in anything vaguely resembling a positive manner.

What I am saying is that there is a strong chance that games with higher female representation are subject to sabotage.

Hearing about the bullet sponge enemies is a dealbreaker for me. When I play an FPS, I want to go POP POP POP WATCHING MOTHERFUCKERS DROP, not pop pop pop, we've nearly managed to penetrate half the enemy's shield.

Indeed, you save that for boss fights.
Again, bullet sponginess does drop off a lot at higher levels, and generally only exists anyway around enemies who've always been spongy (Supersoldat, robots, those fucking guys with shotguns). About level 30 (or 25 if you grab the Laserkraftwerk early), you start one or two shotting almost everything outside of the big robots or supersoldat, who you can three or four shot (seriously you can take down a Panzerhund inside of 10 seconds). The issue is the sponginess at lower levels, and even then that's more due to lack of weapon choice early on and the weirdass armour system rather than infinite healthbars you have to chip away at.

The problem, designwise, is more the balance of their damage numbers to their health, especially in the case of what's meant to be 'mid-tier' enemies like the Hammersoldat and Jager. They generally tend to be moderately tanky, but their damage is at a level where popping out for more than half a second will often down you, no matter how tanky you are - made especially irritating by the fact that they generally sit at the level of health where you don't want to 'waste' power weapons killing them, but 'normal' weapons do take too fucking long to kill them. Other elite enemies have the opposite problem of just being kind of useless - Dieselsoldat, those sniper guys, the flamethrower dudes - all of them are clearly meant to be interesting or different targets that force you to switch up your strategy but are mostly, at worst, irritating.

Then again, that's due to how fucking hard it is to die properly. I've nearly 100%ed the game at this point and I've only gone all the way down no lives left twice, both very early in the game. Admittedly, going all the way down is a LOT more brutal in a number of ways than in other Wolfensteins (no checkpoints, so you start the entire level over again), but you keep all progression you got in your failed attempt (XP, coins, upgrades, etc.). Moreover, going down can often be benificial, as your AI partner picks you up instantly, you're invincible for 3-4 seconds after you get picked up, and going down and getting picked up has no negative consequences at all.

There are things to criticise in Youngblood, but most people's criticisms are surface level, and predicated on the first two hours or so of gameplay (which are, admittedly, the weakest part of the game). At the very least watch high level gameplay to see the difference.

In the gameplay video Jimquisition posted, every enemy seemed to take too long to die for my tastes.

It's s shame to hear that this game is seen as something of a dud. I did not and do not have any plans to buy this game, but I'm worried it'll give ammunition to the "female protagonists don't sell" crowd.

I mean... gimme a day or two to work out video recording and I'll try and show you what I mean about lategame Nazis exploding under fire in traditional Wolfenstein fashion.

I'm sorry, but the argument "It's good at the end" is as hollow in video games as it is in TV shows and books.

I don't care if it 'gets good'. It sucks here and now, and frankly I have better things to play and do with my time.

Fair enough. I've already said that its combat has serious balancing issues early on. But people are acting like the bullet sponginess is a permanent facet of the game design when instead it seems to be poor weapon choice and numbers early on (as well as a few faulty enemy designs).

when you can't get past the first hour. that first hour is the game to you. saying it gets better means nothing if i can't get to the better bit.

That's fine but don't then talk about the design of the game as a whole if you've only experienced part of it. It's like me trying to explain why I don't like the later chapters of For Whom The Bell Tolls when I only got a hundred pages in. It's disingenuous.

Not really.

It's much more important not to fuck early gameplay up because a weaker late half can be excused if the player is invested. If they can't get invested in the first place then it doesn't matter how good the end game is.

I'm not saying it's not important. Hell, I've said it's unfortunate the first few hours are sucky. That it was a poor design decision. But it's not the whole game which people are saying and acting like it is. All I'm arguing for is accuracy of criticism over just saying things without thinking about them.

Good:
1. Okay sound track, its no Metal Gear Rising, but it works.
2. Power suits look and handle great I want it in Wolfenstein 3, really like we can change the helm and color, hope they add cat theme suit.
3. I digging the rpg shooter thing and like weapon mastery even it take long time.
4. The ability carry armory of weapons is great.
5. Jess is beautiful cinnamon roll.
Bad:
1. Location feel to samey, but thing could be helped with some dlc missions in new locations in Paris.
2. Lack of dual wielding for almost all weapons, only sub machine gun and pistol.
3. Lack pause and checkpoints for offline mode is major issue.
4. Sleath feels crappy.
5. Soph
6. New Armor thing enemy have.

Fixes and feature that would make the game better:
1. Pause
2. Checkpoints
3. Dual wielding most weapons.
4. Hidey holes from WNC, nerf enemy perception and more vents add to levels.
5. More various of missions that Abby gives you and dialogue.
6. More abilities.

Everything I saw about this game from the lack of marketing to the fucking ludicrous microtransaction shit makes me think that the game got a second fiddle level of support in development and if that were so then of course the game would be rougher around the edges.

This would be of not inherently the fault of the developers because developers are only as good as the resources, time, and support they're given and the constraints they're working under. But some gamers wants to astroturf YOUNGBLOOD BAD for the sake of white knighting Nazis so that gets ignored.

I was referring to bullet sponge enemies.

All the enemies in nu Wolfenstein take a degree of punishment, this isn't a new development.

Yeah, enemies definitely had some headshot-incentivizing health bar sizes when I replayed the previous three recently.

Eh, from what I've seen of gameplay watching playthroughs, everyone's a lot more spongy now. The previous installments tend to have the spongier Elites mixed in with mooks who you could drop pretty easily.

Maybe a bit. But YB is part of a much bigger trend in pushing multiplayer to the detriment of the overall game experience that goes way beyond just games with female protagonists.

-cough- Anthem -cough-

I'm sure . . . people . . . will push that narrative for all it worth but I think fewer people will buy it.
