Do I know how long agent J takes to become non-harmful, whether it damages items, and whether it would expand up to the attic area?

It take usually 2-3 days to dissapate, though in some unlucky villages it persists for a week or more.
It does not harm non organics.
And it would expand into the attic area, if not the room beyond.

The Gas does burn skin, but breathing through a rag would buy you around an extra thirty seconds or so, depending on its thickness.

Does any of the "new" combat armor in the room come with gas masks or look like a sealed helmet?

they have helmets, but you can't tell if they are sealed or if they act as gas masks. There are parts that cover the face though, so...maybe?
