Unifier (Worm / Minecraft)

So... are we going to see exactly what Taylor went through, or is it going to be a noodle incident?

Side B is what Taylor went through and Side A is current time.
Ah, thanks.

Groff teleported into an open corner and out of the clerk's way. Said bureaucrat then proceeded to walk right out the door of the office. Less than a minute later several armored troopers burst into the room and shouted "Unknown Parahuman, stand down immediately!"

"GO LOOK YOUR ELDERS IN THE EYE YOU INCREDULOUS CURS!"
You know how Endermen don't get angry if you wear a pumpkin head?

Those Troopers are wearing helmets that hide their face in the same way.

Just pointing that out.

Yep, a pumpkin head's the same as a helmet, soo? It covers your head and they don't see them staring at them so maybe they won't get aggravate them?

BTW, watching this, Minecraft and Worm crossovers are so rare and the only good fics I've seen can only be counted by my hands and there will be some remaining fingers left.

Ah, thanks.

But that was when they were mindless monsters working on game logic. These are a fully sapient species. I think they can figure it out.

I don't think you guys understand the situation he's actually in.
Groff was most emphatically not having a good time. All the people looking him in the eyes seriously ticked him off for one, though he at least could take solace in the fact that the people here didn't know any better. Finding a government building was meanwhile a bit easier said than done; even teleporting multiple times per second it was taking a significant amount of time to get anywhere with how big this city was.

After finding City Hall was the problem of finding the appropriate office to talk to. Groff looked around reading the signs for various departments, unsurprisingly finding no-one whose job was remotely related to foreign relations. After several minutes of wandering around and unintentionally intimidating several of the other people here, he gave up and got in line for a random desk.
See, he's not angry because the PRT troopers are making eye contact. He's angry that he's having his task interrupted, after a LARGE amount of effort put in, and a lot of irritation on the side.

This is the equivalent of having to deal with your neighbor putting burning scat on your porch after transit through a large amount of traffic, then flipping out at the pizza guy because he's walking through your grass instead of taking the path despite having a sign saying "Please keep off the grass."

by the way sentient merely means intelligent animal sapient is human lvl intellect so all this use of sentient is wrong you should be using sapient

Maybe these endermen would just think 'This person is an idiot, but they are at least trying to respect our culture. We'd better be nice, and pretend that they don't look stupid.'

Basically, they think he's delusional. Would you want a delusional heavily armed teleporter so close to your municipal government?
Yeah ok, but wouldn't you want to Soft Sell a Mover of unknown power into not doing anything agressive? Especially if they ALREADY were showing signs of being polite and searching for someone of legitimate burocratic power?

Hell, for all they knew he could have released deadly gasses every time he teleported. Why the aggro?

Side B: Setting Out
It had taken all day for Chev and I to fortify a building sufficiently that we could sleep through the night in relative safety. As we lay on our respective beds staring at the brightly torch-lit ceiling, I asked in the mix of English and Ender that we had painstakingly pieced together "What's your homeland like?"

After a few moments, Chev answered "Barren. There are only one, maybe two types of plant there, the rest is all rock and void. Dangerous. We suffer a terrifying dragon who can invade our minds whenever it pleases. Most can't keep the dragon out long enough to escape."

There was a pause as I digested what Chev had just said about the place he came from. After a moment or so, Chev returned my question as he asked "What's your home like?"

It took me some time to answer before I said "Slowly dying. Each year unstoppable monsters destroy several cities. Hope has been forgotten as our society crumbles around us. Random people gain power, and most of them use that power to make life miserable for everyone else."

There were another few moments before Chev noted "We are both from broken worlds, and have found ourselves in a third broken world."

After a couple more moments, I thought aloud "Maybe we could un-break it? Clearly this village was inhabited fairly recently, or none of the original buildings would still be standing. I want to create a place where people can live in safety without fearing that their futures will be crushed by unstoppable monsters, mind-slaving dragons, or any of the other things the world can throw their way."

Chev was silent for several moments, then said "If you want to un-break an entire world, we will need far more people to do it. We can plan more in the morning."

Gently smiling, I closed my eyes and tried to get to sleep despite the bright lighting in the room. Neither of us were willing to put it out, given the problems with the World Curse.

A week later, Chev and I were geared up to travel. I'd managed to instinctively forge a suit of full-plate armor for each of us along with tools and weapons. On top of that, we'd discovered that the plants here grew orders of magnitude faster than on Earth Bet. Some improvised agriculture later we had plenty of bread and berry preserves to keep us going for several months. Stuffing my pocket dimension storage with freshly quarried building stone, Iron doors, torches, and spare beds also made it easy to set up blockhouses each evening along our route.

Preparations complete, we set out across the land to find someone who was still alive. A quick experiment had proven that while Chev could technically carry me while teleporting, it was far more temperamental than was practical. To be more specific, there was a quite high probability of accidentally leaving body parts behind. After the first time I got to experience being decapitated, we both decided that this was not a viable option. Which meant walking.

So, one fine morning, we picked a direction and started walking. Well, I walked; Chev still teleported on occasion to get better vantage points and such, but he stayed in the same general vicinity. We left the evergreen forest we'd started in after a few days, eventually coming to the boundary of a deciduous forest and a grassland after a week and a half. There, on the horizon as the sun was going down, we could see a village.

I immediately said to Chev "That's where we're going, and we'd better hurry. I can see the monsters starting to attack."

The Enderman replied "Understood" and started blinking ahead towards the village at top speed while I dashed onwards behind him, weapons at the ready. What followed was utter blood and mayhem as the two of us joined in with the local defenders to hack, slash, shoot, and otherwise kill the seemingly endless onslaught of undead horrors assaulting the village.

In between brutally stabbing with my sword and using my crossbow, I made effective use of my matter manipulation powers. Exploding plant monster? In less than a second I'd build a small stone wall to absorb the worst of the blast force. Zombies? Being able to dig a ditch in seconds was great for those, since they couldn't climb out effectively. Either way, by the end of the night I was just exhausted, as was Chev. Still, I forced myself to keep going, quickly digging out a ditch around the town for a foundation and building a solid defensive wall. After a quick hour spent underground to get more building stone and some other fancy things I put the finishing touches on the wall, including a drawbridge, a massive iron gate, and a moat of lava.

As soon as this was done I wordlessly handed out several bundles of the ever-burning torches I could somehow make and collapsed from exhaustion.

When I woke up again, I was in a brightly-lit room, being watched by both a bald person with a very large rounded nose and Chev. In Chev's case, his gaze was politely turned just to the side. Groaning slightly, I asked "How long was I out?"

To this, the man(?) replied "You have slept for an entire night and much of the following day. It is now midday."

Levering myself upright, I introduced myself with "I'm Taylor Hebert."

The person in the room with me nodded, before he answered "I am Arcos, and you have my thanks for saving my family and greatly improving the village's defenses. For the first time in years we didn't lose anyone in the night."

Thinking for a moment as I started getting my armor back on, I noted "Well, I'm glad that I helped improve matters. I'm guessing Chev told you the basics of why we're here while I was sleeping?"

Arcos nodded again, before saying "Yes, and being able to successfully converse with an Enderman was quite a pleasant surprise. The language barrier was impenetrable before now, so we Villagers and Endermen simply stayed out of each other's way."

Nodding, I noted "Yeah, languages seems to be a knack I've picked up recently. Anyway, now that I'm awake again I do hope you'd be willing to show me around the village."

Right he would have been foamed. The PRT isn't competent. Their boss said get over it when confronted with SS's crimes in canon. Your comment is the same thing I keep hearing about how Colin wouldn't do this or that.

And guess what he did this and that, as well as set up several someone's to die all to make himself look good.
The PRT is full of idiots, the man asked for someone in authority he didn't start shooting.
If he wanted to hurt someone he could have dropped one really big bomb on city hall.

I agree that they wouldn't have handled it well, but running in and starting hostilities just isn't how, at least in my opinion, the PRT would engage. Having confoam soldiers right outside the door and 1 or 2 capes with them? Absolutely, but as an organization they've always been careful about PR. Coming in and yelling at a Case 53 is a good way to get backlash, so their first priority would be figuring out if there's any hostility and getting the C53 to PRT HQ/the Rig, where suddenly they have a lot more strength to strong-arm the person because they're in the PRT's custody.

Also, those last two lines aren't really arguing for your position, they're arguing that based on the events in this story, the PRT in this story are idiots. I totally agree with that, and am slotting this PRT into the Taylor Varga section of fanon. "Totally enjoyable, but everyone is either canon Tagg or fanon Miss Militia, with nobody in-between." The canon PRT always tries to get that leverage over the enemy whenever they can before starting negotiations, lead by their glorious example of Alex-"your friends dead bodies are in the other room, and I can keep getting more if you don't cooperate"-andria.

ok so if you want some lore and theories on minecraft, check out mat pat on Game Theory. They have a very in depth analysis of Endermen, ancient monuments and various different monsters. Their theory about the creepers being fungi make sense when you consider the bizzare ways they(the fungi) reproduce. So check it out, you'll love it.

Your precious MatPat holds no power here!

Also, I'm taking the fact that there's such a vigorous argument about whether the PRT is more or less competent than Canon as evidence that I just about nailed it.

Where did she get enough lava to surround a village? And Taylor must have a lot of buckets... Love the chapter! Hope you don't mind the nitpicking
She just needed one lava source block, I once made a floating island with an eternal lavafall on one side and a waterfall on the other using source blocks I harvested deep underground in Minecraft.

Like I said, regardless of my viewpoint, I still enjoy this version of the PRT, but if someone were trying to make a serious story that I'm supposed to get deeply emotionally invested in, this kind of PRT would be the part that makes me drop the fic. I might even be wrong, although that's highly variable (especially with how badly Wildbow has weakened his right to retcon things), I was just getting upset at the people raging against the PRT that I saw to be fanon while going "yep, I can see this happening in canon."

Maybe people just dislike the canon PRT.
Besides that's technically attacking an ambassador what they're doing that's a major breach of diplomatic protocol to the point where we called a diplomatic incident if not an act of war. It is definitely a crime against peace.

Again, I gotta point out how talking about how bad the decisions of the PRT in a fanfic is doesn't make it more canon unless you follow it up by saying that it's in line with the decisions of the canon PRT. What you're doing here is just pointing out how bad the decisions they made in this fic are.

Also, I just want to point out that my "canon PRT" interpretation was literally just as aggressive, but being careful to keep the power plays out of the sight of the public/other capes. I would draw a parallel to Armsmaster's plot during the Leviathan attack: If he hadn't screwed up, the PRT would have been a-ok with it. If they were able to shush it up, he would have just taken a step back for a little while to make sure no one draws that connection, and then they would have been a-ok with it. It's only because it was going to become publicized that they condemned Armsmaster, and I think that fits with my interpretation more than this fic's interpretation.

I just want to say this again: This fic's interpretation of the PRT doesn't have to be 'bad' because it's different. Whenever I think of a vastly different PRT that I enjoyed, I think of two fics. The first is a JUSTIFIED change, a short-lived fic where Taylor got Oni Lee's powerset, and Emma ended up with a Cauldron vial and got Lung's powers. There, the PRT had a cybernetics wetware tinker that was Bonesaw-tier on the payroll, and so suddenly they could combine that with Thinker-based news stories to keep parahumans unsympathetic whenever they messed with the human rights of parahumans on an individual scale. That was good, it had a clear reason for the divergence and kept the viewers engaged. This, however, is closer to a story that I'm reading on QQ which I will not be recommending for NSFW reasons, but for no reason has decided that ICE is a thing and that the Protectorate + PRT is 100% on board with it, and that the Wards are the only ones in the government brave enough to stand up against the oppressors. It's vastly enjoyable, it's just not canon. Similarly, I personally don't feel like this is giving the PRT credit in regards to not fucking up politics-wise, but I will still continue reading as I enjoy this fic regardless.

Just going to note that Groff and the PRT agents are the only people in the room right now. They probably think they can get away with playing hardball. On the other hand, the frustratingly elusive person who aired massive amounts of the PRT's dirty laundry and got their budget gutted is still out there, but they think they've plugged all the security holes.

This is also important, yes: We just got a cliffhanger, so a lot of the argument is based on the surrounding information. If they've already evacuated a city block and nobody else saw the sitcom-level hilariousness that was a Case 53 arguing with a mid-level government employee about being from a foreign universe, then they've basically got the freedom to strongarm him. In that case, while I feel like it's a bit strong I could see it happening in Canon, although that feels like a Tagg thing to do... Wait, do we have confirmation that Piggot is still in charge?

I can't decide on whether letting Tagg be himself in Brockton Bay would be a bad idea, or if tossing him in the one place where it would be harder for him to make everything worse for the PRT is a kind of bureaucratic genius.

With the amount of dirt the PRT will have gotten from the leaks? I think piggy is long gone, along with Shadow and all the moles... I wonder if the wards stayed loyal or if some of them broke off...
