The Rising of the Shield Heroine

I'll repeat my previous hints:
  • All of the characters are active in Brockton bay at the story's start.
  • Each recruited character will come from a different canon team or gang
  • One of them is arguably an original character
So, do the Endbringers or student at Winslow High count as Canon team or gang? Because my immediate thought when I saw "Conspiracy" was: That's got to be either Greg or Ziz ;)

Edit:
Guys we all know who Conspiracy is

Its the Void Cowboy himself
Greg Vader
Hmm, ninjaed by about a day. I guess that's what I get for not reading the threat completely before posting 😅

So there are going to be competent therapists besides Dr. Yamada, and either Hero was the most corrupt member of Cauldron, or Legend is Cauldron's moral compass.
Rule 1 was separate from the list so Rule 3 is about escalation while Rule 4 is about therapy.
I thought Rule No. 1 was 'It's a Simurgh plot?'
Other rules, in no particular order:
  • It will never get better, only worse
  • When in doubt, more bees/escalate
  • All Capes need therapy, and there are not therapists but Jessica Yamada
  • Hero was Cauldron's Conscience

Hmm. I have a fun idea for an omake, but I don't actually know anything about Shield Hero, so it might not make much sense in the terms of that franchise.

I will take a stab at it tomorrow and we'll see what happens.

How likely is it that Shadow Stalker will end up as Herne or Conspiracy? After all, she turns into a ghost like entity and her entrance to the Wards was a plot -- granted not a secret one, but one all the same.

Reminds me of something I read once, possibly one of EPU's Undocumented Features?

Something like, "There were many laws of aerial combat, and all of them were the most important. The trick was knowing which one was most important right now."
Probably yes. I remember I got that from somewhere, but nothing more than that.

@Tale Swapper, I'm re-reading the fic. And found something:
Event: Meeting the Henricks Complete
Diplomacy is now Level 4
Diplomacy skill increased: Level 4
One must be wrong. I hope that first one is right, and second should've been "level 5". If that so, here should be 6:
Diplomacy skill increased: Level 5

Also you forgot something:
Tutorial: The Bay Awaits Quest Complete
You're still inexperienced, but at least the basics have been unlocked. What's next?
Rewards: 500 EXP, Tutorial Quest Catalyst
Hidden Objective met: You've gained a bit of respect from someone...
Reward: ???
You promised Taylor something called "Fleetfoot Band" for that quest. Here:
The quest updates applied to "The Bay Awaits" and "Of Sisters and Friendships." I couldn't see what I'd get from finding out what happened with Emma, but apparently completing the tutorial quest would also reward me with a "Fleetfoot Band"- whatever that meant.

edit
*Untapped Potential: Gain an additional Stat Point every odd level.
...
I tapped 'Untapped Potential'. It would have long-run benefits, and the extra skill point I'd get at level seven would be worth putting off getting [Wax On].
Should be "stat" not "skill".

I watched as the last of the elemental's MP fizzle out
Should be HP, not MP. It run out of MP already:
the elemental's MP hit zero; and then it's HP began to slowly drop

As a side note, the Gamer system really seemed to like having a Trainer give me instructions. I'd gained several ranks in Unarmed Combat in the few lessons he'd given me, making the money I'd laid down more than worth the loss. I'd even qualified for the first 'martial specialty', which allowed me to select a particular 'Art' of fighting with my fists, so that I could gain more potency when using that particular set of techniques.

...admittedly, I only qualified to unlock the 'Brawling' Art, since my formal training was so little and my practical experience was so slapdash. Still, at the very least I now knew how to throw a punch, and the Brawling Art gave me a pretty nice bonus to any bare-hand technique. It just lacked any specialized skills.
You forgot to mention completing the quest "Path of the Fist and Shield". Not that it does much, since reward is only 200 exp. But still.

God Dammit, L33T
Omake: God Dammit, L33T!

"Well Leet, this has been fun, but I think it is time for us to make our exit!"

Uber managed to maintain his dramatic and confident voice, but his expression was one of near panic as the tall, thin, raging lunatic of a girl wearing a tee-shirt ninja mask and holding a medieval shield charged at him yet again.

This was supposed to be a simple episode of their show. Appear at the mall, lock everyone inside, introduce their characters and the scenario, have some fun, then slip away before the lockdown ended and the heroes charged in.

Unfortunately, they appeared to have locked a hero in the mall with them, and that hero was most definitely not happy with the situation as she did her outright best to feed them her shield while cursing about how much she hated clothes shopping in the first place.

Leet pulled a baseball sized sphere out of his belt pouch, pressed a button on it and gave it a short toss in front of him. The sphere hovered at eye level and began to beep and flash as it warmed up.

Then, he uttered the two short syllables that everyone in Brockton Bay dreads ever hearing fall from his lips...

"Ut oh"

Uber and crazy chick both froze and stared at Leet and his sphere which was now starting to beep faster as a thin curl of smoke wafted out of it.

"How bad is it?" Uber said with resignation. All thoughts of the battle were forgotten as the only pressing matter now were ones pertaining to withdrawal to a safe distance.

Leet listened to the frantic beeping of the sphere and cringed as large sparks began flying out of the device. After a moment, his face turned ashen.

"It wasn't supposed to end this way," Leet whispered as he collapsed to the ground.

"What the hell are you talking about? How long until it blows!? How big will it be?" Uber shouted questions at Leet as he grabbed his partner and shook him by the shoulders.

"The fusion driver is going critical. That will be bigger than the mall itself. Maybe a minute? Certainly before the stasis lock on the mall exits goes down." Leet mumbled his answers and then scowled up at the sphere. "Because OF COURSE the dimensional shifter is what decides to blow up rather than the damn stasis lock! Stupid power. I guess it finally managed to get its wish to take me out."

The hero's eyes darted from Leet to Uber and then finally settled on the sphere. After a moment, she straightened up and marched to the sparking and smoking device and raised her shield toward it.

"If I live through this, I swear you two are going to regret it," She said with a final glare at them.

She touched the gem in the center of her shield to the device. Leet gasped as the sphere seemed to melt into the shield as it morphed into a new shape and design.

For a brief moment, the hero's eyes seemed to focus on something invisible right in front of her, and her face twisted into a confused expression as she muttered, "What the...".

Then, she disappeared.

[C̵̹͔̏͌̇a̷̰̓̕m̶̱̩͗͜ẻ̴̫̲̪͑o̷̐̈͜ Buckler (Small)] eπi+1 % Mastery

Attack: ♘
Defense: ♖

Ability: C̵̹͔̏͌̇a̷̰̓̕m̶̱̩͗͜ẻ̴̫̲̪͑o̷̐̈͜ (10 MP to activate, 10 MP per minute): Causes the shield bearer to dimensionally shift to the location of an alternate version of themselves in a random alternate reality. When the ability is terminated, the shield bearer will be returned to their home universe in their previous location.

This ability is automatically activated when the shield is equipped, and cannot be deactivated until the shield bearer's MP pool is fully drained.

A/N: There you go. Leet's device malfunctions, and when Taylor tries to get rid of it by absorbing it into her shield, it sorta glitches out the system and breaks reality (just a bit).

If anyone likes this prompt, please feel free to post a follow-up with where she goes, etc. If it doesn't make any sense in the context of Shield Hero, I apologize, I don't know anything about that franchise beyond what has been shown in this story so far. Also, if someone can tell me how to do the info text layouts used in this story, I'll edit it to match.

This would have to be an AU, since Taylor has her hero gear with her at all times (inventory is cool like that) but the concept is sound. Have a like, a threadmark, and a call for a continuation.
In fact, I might write a continuation myself...

:: beaming smile :: glad you like it!
I was thinking that this would maybe happen before she got that alternate loadout slot, but honestly it could trivially be changed to have her in full Heraldry costume. I just giggled at the idea of her standing in a clothes store, holding a tee shirt, when all this went down and she just calmly starts wrapping it around her head.
If you want to switch any parts of it around to make it more canon compliant, please feel free to! This is just a token of my appreciation for your delightful story.

I love that omake... so much, to bad the Shield seems to not allow Talyor to meet Natfumi because that would be fun, just the ability to compair their shields would be a blast. plus if Talyor knows about classes she could explain to him about being locked to the Defender class

thinking on it even if she had her loadout slot if their were cams or people in the area she couldn't swap in the store which would be even worse for her cape Identity expeluly if their is a pretty lightshow when the swap happens which their likely was given that its a good way to prevent people from seeing something they really shouldn't see or want to see unless they're a perv, and in a emergency like that going to the bathroom to change would take to long, so it work even after the loadout slot gain under those condensions

I haven't seen anyone suggest this yet but...
Herne could have a seriously good chance of being a rebranded Vista.

Vista is seriously frustrated with being unarmed and not treated with the respect her experience justly should give her and would likely eagerly jump ship if she had a valid and morally acceptable to her choice.

Herne being a legendary hunter implies tracking and ranged weaponry skills.

  1. Vista's power means if given a ranged weapon (like a bow, gun, anything up to and including a glowing Tron disc), she will never, ever miss.
  2. It also means her target can never escape her as she can warp after them or fix them effectively in place.
  3. Vista's power can make the use of any melee weapon a one hit KO or kill.
She sounds dead on like an ultimate hunter to me...

Alrighty, I've finished re reading and caught back up again, so now comment time.
(no gun-shields, for instance)
"Don't worry bruddah, Gibraltar's got your back!"
Oh gods, Now I have a Taylor as a servant Shielder image...
So Taylor carrying around Mashs castle shield with all its abilities...hmmm....
There's a reason I have no plans to have her show up again, and that's not just because I can't see anything else I want to do with her character.
Yea, super duper lockdown. Prove you can get out once and that basically nixs all your exceptions freebies and liberties.
There's a reason I find Worm fandom more stable and readable than the actual story, much of the time.
Honestly, work was good until leviathan. The swap from street level crime/heroism to "world killer" kinda broke the setting imoho.
The thing is, there HAS to be a reliable way to detect whether or not someone is a Parahuman.
Was gonna say watchdog/Contessa. "Path to make X a parahuman? 0 steps, path complete? Dudes totally a parahuman"
By the way, I have a wild guess about Conspiracy, Danny
TS never said nothing about Conspiracy's distinctive powers being canon, now did he?
I'd be interested, but iirc, Taylor got Queens Shard AFTER Danny failed to trigger. Wog was that Danny would have had rodent/rat control, and his gemma died when it swapped over to Taylor.

Even though it can't be possible will all the hints now, I was kinda hoping for it to be way left field and for Conspiracy to be Contessa/Fortuna. I've always had this crazy idea that while Fortuna can direct it, her entire life since she activated her power has had her self mastered and trapped by PtV, and she jusr waiting for someone to come free her from it's control.

Also, if Taylor can read true names, she's going to become Faultlines best friend. She will be able to provide the biggest piece of information for case 53s to her and that might seriously jump start her investigation. Also, I can't wait until Taylor has a meeting with Alexandria and observes Rebecca Costa brown and blows that entire conspiracy fish out for the water with explosives.

Also, conspiracy could be Hendricks. I mean , he's that old guy who's been around the blocks a million times and " every damn thing is a conspiracy." I kinda imagined him like the old guy in Shooter. "As soon as you think you've go to figured, your wrong. You keep that in mind."
Fun fact, you have the Hendricks, and Constellation has the Henricks, and I'm not sure if you were intending that to be a nod or not.....

I'm new to this - enjoying the story, and happened to notice a typo.
Only one in 10 chapters, so I am very impressed!
I hope you don't mind my pointing it out - some people do, but others appreciate an extra pair of proofreader eyes.
Anyway, on the off chance you're one who likes to fix your errors when pointed out, here it is:

Untapped Potential seemed really useful, since it increased the number of Stat points I recieved by ten percent. But it didn't offer me much in the way of immediate benefits, and I wouldn't receive any benefit until level 7.

Anyway, I'll just keep reading along. Not usually a fan of gamer fic, but I am enjoying your writing immensely. Nice work!
