SB still lying to protect Racists what else is new
While I agree with the general gist of your point here, I think you're being overly pedantic. Particularly since you're point isn't really reflective of the portion of the chapter under discussion. I mean can you honestly tell me you read that line in the chapter as anything other than Danny lamenting his weakness at needing both outside assistance and chemical aids to even begin to reconcile with his daughter? While I absolutely get your point, and agree with it, I also feel compelled to point out that people generally really, really misuse the word "crutch" when they use it as an insult.
You know what an actual crutch is? It's an essential medical device that restores mobility to someone whose leg is unable to function properly.
There's nothing shameful about a crutch. If you have a bad leg, you need a crutch. If you have depression, you need anti-depressants.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not at all saying that attitude is unrealistic in general or arguably realistic in Danny's case in particular. I'm saying it's a toxic line of thinking, and I want to determine if the author put it there to BE clearly toxic and possibly something for the character to overcome and grow from doing so, or if they happen to agree with that line of thinking.
**Edits so I don't double post**
This is another wonderful example of the type of toxic thinking I was talking about still being prevalent all over. Dealing with sticking to a treatment regime is one of the hardest parts of working to combat depression, and bullshit attitudes like this is part of why it can be so difficult. How the hell do you even form this idea? I mean, he's a fictional character so sure a particular story could go with that characterization, but it would be a terrible story with no bearing on canon or the reality of how people deal with depression.Full disclaimer i don't actually dislike Mark Dallon, but I also don't like him. His situation is fucked up, I know, but despite having 2 daughters that love him, and should make sure he takes his pills and goes to therapy, he really doesn't even try
Honestly, at this point if we could just get people who want to criticize/comment on characters with depression to just stop themselves when ever they start saying things like "If they would just..." or "If they just tried a little harder..." it would do wonders for my own mental health and blood pressure.
