The Rising of the Shield Heroine

Unlike traditional RotSH, Taylor has a set number of shields she can unlock in a set time, and she still needs to master a shield before she gets its effect permanently. So just absorbing all the random stuff in her house she can might get her something useful, but likely would just clutter her inventory, especially since she hasn't found a good place to grind weak mobs. In short, Taylor's going to prioritize crafting shields and ones derived from magic/drops.

Still, the adhesive shields might be worth throwing in at some point.
why Danny don't just give her things from the Dockworkers?

something like "compass shield" or "fishing line shield" or "net shield"... one of the shield should give her a head's up in water magic

I don't know about others, but Amitriptyline is pretty cheap and has been generic for decades. It's only about 25% more than a bottle of Tylenol.
Granted, I haven't taken it since 1996, but it was cheap even without insurance.

I'm surprised he wasn't able to get a cheap generic anti-depressant prescribed to try first before going for the expensive stuff.
I will admit to knowing absolutely nothing about antidepressants, similarly to most drugs. Good to know that's a thing, though.

Hey, to everyone out there, should I make a modification to that line, or just chalk it up to Danny either a) shelling out for a more potent prescription b) blaming it on Earth-Bet horribleness and calling it a day or c) just having it stay, as a reminder that the Heberts are on a shoestring budget, and Danny still hasn't internalized that his daughter stands to make bank?

Will Emma play any further roles in the future?
Yes.
Although the above is a slight misnomer; she will play exactly one role, and perhaps serve as a viewpoint in the very nebulous future.

Unlike RotSH, most of this world lacks explicitly 'magical' or even 'non-normal' materials. Although a Compass Shield might be useful (in a Hyrulean sense of 'Compass') most ordinary, store-bought stuff is going to give only marginal upgrades and improvements; the 'Needle Shield' in Chapter 3 is a good example of the sort of yield randomly stuffing stuff into a shield will get, and the AGL boost is an Active Skill, not a passive buff.

You know what, I'm just going to put this out there: if it was abandoned on the side of the road or could reasonably be thrown into the trash, Taylor's likely snagged one up, stuffed it in the Holy Shield, looked at the resulting option, and then never used it. I don't show you guys everything Taylor gets up to, and as a result I don't show you every shield. While it'd be a good way to pad my word count, that's not my goal here.

Side effects are a thing, especially if he is on other medications. I moved to another, more expensive med because of side effects myself. Also, it depends on his insurance. Mark up for meds is insane.

One shield I'd like to see Taylor gain is the Air Strike Shield.

That thing was easily the most versatile shield in Naofumi's arsenal. Midair shield, battering ram, midair platform...

Sometimes, because of the mess of medical insurance in the US, doctors won't necessarily prescribe medication that could be effective because insurers won't cover it. Maybe this means only going for the cheap older stuff until they've got a specific reason why it's insufficient, maybe it means only going for the newer stuff because of significant push by the manufacturers thereof. Often, if it's over-the-counter rather than prescribed insurers won't cover it, for example – and if it is prescribed but also available OTC, the copay for the insurance might be higher than getting it OTC without. I don't know antidepressants in particular, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some tangle keeping the generics unavailable or overpriced.

Wow. Two new chapters, and they're both really good to boot!
As for editing, I didn't see any typos, so that's also good.

Please keep up the good work; I love your stories!

the Party System might become her real power. Especially with ally boosting and xp granting. Raphtalia was Naofumi's rock.

Talking about antidepressants made me picture an "Anxiety Shield" that reduces or negates shard-induced Power Anxiety in Taylor's teammates and/or any cape in its sphere of influence.

Might not be necessary depending on how the Party System works and if it counters Power Anxiety in Taylor's teammates.

Insert joke about "a Trump able to give capes the Power of Rational Thought."

Danny: "What does an Anxiety Shield do?"
Taylor: "It shields people from Anxiety, duh!"
Danny: :eyeroll:

Yeah, that one was cool. Almost OP for Worm, though, especially since Taylor can actually do damage with her shield. Maybe as a quest reward some time?

Haha, insurance. Considering that, in-canon, they had to use all the hush money given out to cover the medical bills, I think insurance is a bit of a pipe dream for the Hebert Family.
Well, it was, until Taylor started bringing home hundreds of dollars in small unmarked bills.

Now picturing an "Anxiety Shield" that reduces or negates shard-induced Power Anxiety in Taylor's teammates and/or any cape in its sphere of influence.
Likely to be a 'Rare Drop', so to speak. Power Anxiety is a big deal, and tossing a couple of human-made antidepressants into the Holy Shield ain't gonna cut it.

I mean, considering how apt Clockblocker is when he says "Powers are bullshit", Taylor kind of needs something as powerful and versatile as the Air Strike Shield.

Let's...just hope she doesn't use the Shield of Wrath. That thing is Bad News, between the RAEG it induces and the effects of Blood Sacrifice.

I think that it would be very hard for her to unlock Wrath or any of those other cursed shields at the moment. She actually has a support network right now and isn't being repeatedly kicked around by people she can't fight back against.

So... power-copying, a brute package comparable to Aegis, and innate thinker powers rivalling or exceeding Lisa's aren't enough? How about the ability to send blasts of fire from her hands at any time? A near-infinite hammerspace pocket?

Right now, I know she's just a tougher Circus, but this has just been her powers so far. The whole Bay will be calling her BS by the end of May, don't worry.

As for the Shield of Wrath... no. The Patron who sent the Shield to Taylor removed the Curse series, which unfortunately also removed the Blessed series.

Danny frowned. "New Wave is- no, they're mostly retired. PRT is out for obvious reasons, and there aren't any independent heroes in the city." He sighed. "Two major gangs, an army of drug-addled loons and a host of little Villains, and we've only got two teams of heroes to fight back."
There were a few indie heroes in Brockton Bay in canon, though they were never named, iirc. Not that you necessarily have to stick close to canon, it's your fic after all. But if you need OC heroes for any reason...

Just found this story after I found your Xenoblade story (which is amazing) and decided to check out your other stories. I myself had the plot bunny of 'What if pre-locker Taylor was summoned as the Shield Hero?' and seeing someone making a sorta similar story is cool. Speaking of your other stories though is the RWBY/DxD story dead or on hiatus? It's been a year since that got a chapter and it's my favorite story of yours so far.

"Oh, right." She paused, inspecting it closely, and for an instant Gregor recognized the look she'd gotten right before she revealed his name. "...you know, most of this thing runs on real-world physics. Very little black-boxing at all."

"That is important?" He stopped, raising one metal hand as Heraldry moved to speak, his mind clicking over the possibilities. "No, I understand. Reverse-engineering? Patents be had from it?"

"Loco-Motion Inc, in association with Dracotech Industries, are proud to present the world's first mass-produceable powered exoskeletons. Launching soon with models for industrial, emergency services, and prosthetic applications."

Excellent chapter. Very glad to see this updating.

I really love the bond Taylor is forming with Trainwreck. From my time helping out Projection Quest, Trainwreck has rapidly elevated in status in my head. And now I can only imagine the fun of having him in Taylor's party and the pair of them wrecking Dungeons together.

Trainwreck... Gregor... he is going to be a good friend. And I can only imagine what will happen once Taylor meets other Case 53s. Helping them out and sharing their origins. She can't heal them, not yet anyway, but maybe one day.

Who knows, considering the Shield Hero's iconic abilities... the Party System might become her real power. Especially with ally boosting and xp granting. Raphtalia was Naofumi's rock. And Taylor might be able to gather a party as strong and as dedicated as Naofumi. Especially when Gregor starts gaining EXP and improving himself and unlocking things.

I can't wait to see the progress in the future. With the Shield Hero unleashed... there is a lot of possibility. Including standing in the way of the true horrors in the dark blocking them from ever harming anyone.

Taylor is going to become the Tank the world needs.

So while Gregor apparently can't make the police force a group of Ironman equivalent , he apparently can settle for movie 1s extra large Iron Monger equivalent...or something similar to the animated Ironman Armored Adventures russian powersuit version...wait,was that Iron monger or another name?

He hadn't told Taylor, but there was a pricey but necessary bottle of pills upstairs. The antidepressants were a crutch, one he hated- but if that's what it took to be here for his daughter...
Excuse me, what the fuck is this bullshit?

I hope to God this is just a case of the character not knowing what the hell they're talking about, and not an author coming up in here and straight out insulting the large number of users suffering from depression, myself included. Anti-depressant medication is not a crutch. That is the disgusting sort of thinking that leads to people being told to just "tough it out" or just "cheer up".

That's not the Author's opinion, that's Danny's opinion. Danny is the kind of person who would prefer to 'Tough It Out'.

I had hoped so, which is why I asked. It's still a toxic as fuck idea though and could have done with an authors note saying as such. Far too often characters just end up as mouth pieces for what the author thinks is right and correct, and this would be far from the first time this particular nasty idea has reared its head on this site so it certainly doesn't hurt to ask which it is on this case.

Now that I remember that this Taylor can use her shield as a weapon of attack and defense, seriously I don't really understand why the Legendary Shield is a solely defense weapon in the series, I had a really strange idea.

I imagined that Miss Militia gave Taylor the bandanna she uses to cover her identity, imagine for a moment that it has stayed with her through thick and thin and hasn't been replaced for a long time, and Taylor absorbs it in the shield. Miss Militia's hopes and dreams in that bandanna, the reason why she wanted to use the flag of America to cover her identity unlocks The Shield of the Patriot. Basically Captain America's shield.

Ok,I know Miss Militia and Steve Roger's are very different, specially in the sense that she is a soldier in mentality and deed and a hero in looks while Steve is a hero in mentality and deed first and a soldier second.

While I absolutely get your point, and agree with it, I also feel compelled to point out that people generally really, really misuse the word "crutch" when they use it as an insult.

You know what an actual crutch is? It's an essential medical device that restores mobility to someone whose leg is unable to function properly.

There's nothing shameful about a crutch. If you have a bad leg, you need a crutch. If you have depression, you need anti-depressants.

oh my father, someone who finally gets it. It is incredible how many people nowadays still have the silly preconceptions of the need for a crutch to walk if you need it, both literally and metaphorically, or how people that need or seek psiquiatric help are crazy.
At least Danny is making full use of a tool given to him, as long as he takes his doses with responsibility, unlike other parent in Worm who may or may not be using one of her daughter's powers as a crutch during "good days".

Full disclaimer i don't actually dislike Mark Dallon, but I also don't like him. His situation is fucked up, I know, but despite having 2 daughters that love him, and should make sure he takes his pills and goes to therapy, he really doesn't even try. Doesn't help that I'm pretty sure Carol may, subconsciously, like him passive and malleable.
