These are what the plan would look like with civic tech swapped out for exploration. I personally believe we should finish exploring first but I strongly encourage you to vote/create whichever plan you like! I always make a plan for this quest, but by no means do I have a monopoly on making plans or anything.

it's water in the system being drawn towards the atmosphere of Calenwyrm II.
as in, it is natural?. cause if it is natural, then it's even weirder, cause; while planets do that in the real world, it is very much not visible in such a manner. something very fucky is going on, on Calenwyrm II. the only thing i can think of is that some parts of the planet has a horrifyingly high gravity, to just... suck water out of space, like that. which begs a lot of questions...
What the fuck is doing that? is it a machine or some mineral that does that? if mineral, did we just stumble upon the perfect thing to make unpowered grav-plating. if machine, why make such a thing? was it an forgotten work of art? some kind of industrial machine? terraformer that was never turned off?
Where the hell is all the water all going? Is the planet constantly growing in size? if so it's going to be more and more expensive to make the planet livable, due to increasing gravity. and if the planet stays the same size? some kind of wormhole? 4 dimsional potal? it is being expeled out into space again?

there is without a doubt some poor scientist going mad, just thinking about this fucking planet :jackiechan:

(Construct Post (Sunrise Bank-Bastion): 71 +17 (Kat) +11 (Wealth) = 99)

Progress: 3/4. In Progress.

Kat swore and scrolled through the list of ticket requests. "Really? We have to do this bullshit?" She grumbled and glanced at her similarly beleaguered colleagues. "Well, guess a fucking tyranny doesn't keep good public financial records. We've got no choice, let's rollback and do this one by one. Stars, this going to be so fucking tedious!"

(Construct Chain (Lycoris Sanctuary-Bastion): 22 +7 (Dorothea) +11 (Wealth) = 40)

Progress: 2/4. In Progress.

While the scars of battle have at least been covered up as best they could be, still does the memory of the civil conflict remain in the minds of so many who lived in the rebuilt city. Normalcy did return, but there was an edge to it, a somewhat hesitant look to the side at the various peacekeeping forces garrisoned to maintain order. Perhaps they withdrew a bit too late or it was always going to happen either way, but there was a tense uneasiness among the civilian populace. That they, the losers of the war, felt ostracized from their brothers and sisters who had fought on the other side. It was a logical nonsensical conclusion, born from a mix of fear and guilt, yet it fed well into the growing underbelly of crime all the same when one felt cornered.

It would have been so easy to simply send back in a garrison of peacekeepers, but that was the lazy option which would only allow the oppressive feeling to continue festering. No, it was a malady of the spirit, soul, and mind, to which there was a much better force to tackle the issue. Lycoris Knights in general were those Brilliance Knights who had sworn to uphold those civics which hold up society, to encourage and maintain the peace that their colleagues had won in a hard-fought battle. Most of the time, they were like scattered independent agents in their own little communities, not unlike old figures of faith to shepherd the lambs.

But now with such negativity concentrated on Andernia III, a more concentrated and coordinated effort was needed. All who took the oath received the summons from the one they recognized as their unofficial and unelected leader, the one whose own flock included the most influential figures of House Iris. Arrangements were made for temporary reassignments, for the Lycoris Knights to assemble in a rare gathering to discuss matters of hope and faith in the future. It would be half-conference half-sermon, delivered to those who watched on as proof that there still was yet time for a prospering society to bloom in Bastion. With any luck, it should calm the populace to an acceptable level.

Perhaps though, a more permanent fixture may be required to reinforce such ideals.

(System Expedition (Asenmach): 34 +10 (Violet) +11 (Wealth) = 55)

Progress: 2/?(8). In Progress.

Tempting as it truly was, you unfortunately had too much riding on your shoulders to take a trip like Radana had. Or at least one that didn't have some grand state purpose in mind. So all you could muster were some rather generic well-wishes to the expedition system before they departed, hoping that your annoyance at least wasn't showing through.

"The Solar Queen wished us off herself...she shook our hand. My hand!"

"She's every bit as charismatic and wonderful like the vids! Oh, the way she smiled at me!"

"Are you blind? She was clearly smiling at me!"

"You dare insult the Solar Queen's intent-?!"

"You two idiots, break it up!" The expedition leader howled amid the sound of fistfights breakout yet again on the ship. "Imagine if Her Majesty could hear you now, how I'd die of embarrassment! Get off each other and get to your stations, we're about to arrive!"

"Mmh, there's an idea," You muttered while steadfastly ignoring your adjutant's giggling. "Figure out how to remotely kill somebody with embarrassment. It'd spice up all these listening bugs."

"Should I add it to your itinerary then-"

"Don't you dare, Radana! Go and just focus on working your magic words!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Goodwill Mission (House Archon): 21 +16 (Radana) +11 (Wealth) = 48)

Progress: 2/4. In Progress.

The people of House Archon were a reclusive bunch, which was always a headache for Radana to work around. It was one thing to inquire about something in polite conversation and then be told a fib. But she would take that lie over a non-committal or brief answer that clearly came from somebody looking to move on and do something other than talking. In this case, it was some visiting merchants from afar that wished to do business, but without any sort of chit-chat. A very odd feature especially given their chosen profession, but she could see it was an efficient one that simply focused on selling their wares and being done with it.

It probably would have stumped and caused many in her career to give up. The noble lady wasn't so easily dissuaded and continued on, this time respecting their customs for expedient transactions and acting in kind. She had a gut feeling that there surely must be a greater reasoning to this preference aside from privacy concerns.

As it would turn out, she was right. Radana slyly noted the way eyes lit up when payments were confirmed, and the shift to a warmer tone when ware was properly sold for the declared price. Perhaps she paid a little extra for some tea leaves she could have haggled for more, but that in itself as a clue. It would appear that for all their aloofness, those who lived under the banner of House Archon were still so equally tempted by the human sin of greed. With that in mind, she got to preparing a splendid gift in riches to begin opening up the former research enclave.

She may have to borrow her friend's wallet for it so.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Kat, on the verge of greatness. But otherwise, looks like we've got all actions carrying over again. Hopefully, next turn's rolls will be a bit better.

Well the good news is that Kat and Radana are guaranteed to finish their work next cycle. Dorothea does still have a slim chance of only getting one progress but it is slim.

If I may ask, do we know when senate issues that pass will come into effect? Will it be simultaneous to our actions on cycle 20 or after? I ask just because I'm trying to figure out if Radana finishing colonising Calenwyrm during cycle 20 would affect our average Wealth. It doesn't matter all that much though tbh.

Thank you for the update and looking forward to more!

It'll be immediately checked/applied once voted upon. I might change it in the future, but it's so you do have an incentive to keep an eye on what's going on politically, though some may perhaps have a warning or two.

Quick little shot of what the Asenmach system looks like. Finally, a mostly non-anomalous system...barring each planet looking like a circle of hell respectively.

So it seems like the pattern is that each extra planet means 2 more progress. So a system that only took 2 progress would be empty.

Cycle 17.0
(Construct Post (Sunrise Bank-Bastion): 39 +17 (Kat) +11 (Wealth) = 67)

Progress: 5/4. Completed!

A Sunrise Bank has been built in Bastion, increasing
Wealth by three (3) and decreasing Resources by one (1).

The harried individual rushed up to the teller, eyes wild while they hastily produced their identification. "All my credits, now!" They insisted. "And don't you dare keep any of it-!"

"Of course," The bank worker smoothly told and tapped at their interface. A few minutes later, they nodded and glanced over at the stunned customer. "Would you like in hard or digital form? We can offer either, whatever is convenient."

"...hard. I...I have a feeling that there's going to be a crisis." While the teller busied themselves with disappearing into the backroom, the panicked former client whirled about and shouted to others who were there on business as well. "That goes for all of you! If you know what's good for you, get your money and run before the institution collapses! All of it, don't give them a single credit! They don't deserve your money and your trust!"

"Here you go," The teller helpfully chirped and placed a briefcase onto the counter between them. "All your credits, in hard money form. Good for wherever you decide to go in the galaxy. We thank you for being a loyal customer all these years, and would like to ask you leave before security has to escort you out."

There was another moment of staggered disbelief, then they yanked at the case and disappeared. The other bank clients watched them flee, then shrugged to return to their business with slightly more assurance than before. It spoke well of Sunrise Banks to simply weather such an unusual transaction with nary a blink, and the ability to promptly present their money on demand was most considerate. Faith was the cornerstone of business after all.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Construct Chain (Lycoris Sanctuary-Bastion): 73 +7 (Dorothea) +11 (Wealth) = 91)

Progress: 5/4. Completed!

A Lycoris Sanctuary has been built in Bastion, increasing Influence by ten (10) and decreasing Wealth by four (4).

The worship of solarium and the knowledge to make it so was a curious practicing faith for the Helmsmen. They typically did not erect places of worship such like churches to show their devotion, but rather repurposed existing facilities of learning and enlightenment to do so instead. Their most esoteric and revered rituals as well only revolved around the practical objects of their belief such as the Solarium Codex, leaving many outside experts scratching at their head at just how worship is actually carried out.

Surprisingly and honestly rather constructively, demonstrating faith for the Helmsmen is to demonstrate a willingness to learn. A spiritual hunger to learn more about the world about them, to understand the workings of the universe itself with the energy of a thousand burning stars that never could be extinguished. It was why those who showed critical aptitude for technical knowledge were swiftly elevated and tracked to becoming a Prism, a guaranteed way of elevating one's own status almost immediately by becoming worthy of understanding how to make solarium.

For those who did not possess the natural genius required, then the Brilliance Knights were open for those who did still possess the burning drive to at least protect the knowledge they worshiped. A sacred duty that often times was passed through families, the oldest of which being none other than House Iris. But then, what were those who did not qualify for either? How could they demonstrate their faith for the stars above that they entrust their future with?

It was a curious thing that did trouble many around the beginning of the worship, but a method was eventually devised and subtly encouraged by their people's leaders. A belief in that while knowledge was sacred, the labor to attain it so was equally valued so. Hard work was seen as an adequate manner of supplication for those without gifts, and through it do could the people attain at least some sort of inner peace with themselves.

To encourage this spiritual satisfaction then, it was the duty of Lycoris Knights to ensure that communities were healthy and hale. It was the gift of those blessed back to those mundane, the ease of access to a trusted counselor who also could be a guardian warrior in a heartbeat. Little wonder then that one could claim to feel wholly at ease when stepping into the Lycoris Sanctuary in Bastion, feeling safe both physically and spiritually with blessed individuals willing to come forth and help however they can.

And they would do it with a quiet smile, for it was their chosen oath to do so.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(System Expedition (Asenmach): 20 +10 (Violet) +11 (Wealth) = 41)

Progress: 4/8. In Progress.

The initial surveys of the Asenmach system indicated a system that correlated with probably the upper fifty percentile of all known colonized systems of humanity. Three identified planets were noted as having conditions suitable for settlement, but subsequent scans strongly suggested that extreme hazards were present. As to what they exactly are, the expedition team was there to find out and document.

They landed first on Asenmach III and stepped out to find an environment not too unlike that of Andernia III. If anything it was slightly cooler, the molten magma seas slightly cooling to form at least a thin crust of foundation to cover up the core within. However, tests indicated that the crust could be broken under high duress and stress, so special care would need to be taken when heavy construction came to the planet. A headache, but a workable one.

Then the researchers looked at Asenmach II and began to violently swear, hoping that somebody among them remembered protective corrosion gear. It would be quite shameful to need to return home and pick those up, but in their defense, acid planets usually were only identified when within actual testing range. You simply sighed and began to check for a way to sneak in some said suits for their mid-journey care package.

(Goodwill Mission (House Archon): 62 +16 (Radana) +11 (Wealth) = 89)

Progress: 5/4. Completed.

House Iris has gained five (5) Goodwill with House Archon.

These Helmsmen were a little bit too curious about everything, thought the traveling merchant, but their credits are good, which matters more in the end. I can already imagine what others back home will pay for these imports from another universe!

They looked over their newly stocked crates with a happy expression beneath their googles, thinking about how profitable this risky venture had been. A few had been apprehensive about approaching their sudden new neighbors, but it had always been those of House Archon who plunged headfirst into the unknown to discover true greatness and glory. Riches too, can't forget about that! In the end, this trip was going to be absolutely worth all the trouble-

The sudden buzz of the ship intercom's system jolted the merchant out of their internal celebration and they frowned, sure they had put up a 'sold out' sign out on their empty trade platform. Grumbling about people who couldn't take the hint, they ducked back outside their ship, harsh words on their lips which promptly died out at the sight of a beaming woman. "Greetings. I was hoping to perhaps catch you for one final conversation before your departure," Radana suggested with a measured smile.

"I'm in a hurry," The merchant gruffly told and made to turn away, only to pause when the retainer of House Iris suddenly palmed a stick of hard credits from her inner sleeve and waggled it about. It was kept out of arm's reach though, a tempting payment for something. "...be brief."

"Thank you. I was hoping that you would be interested in bringing some additional cargo back home to deliver to a representative of House Archon." She turned to a nearby guard who immediately presented the lady with a small chest that she showed to the merchant. "It is a gift to reciprocate the thoughtful welcome presented to us at the coronation ceremony. If you would like, you may check it now to see it is no danger."

The merchant thought on it a moment, then nodded. It was a free payday for just moving some stuff about, and it probably was just a simple sentimental offering like a book. Something that they could lightly toss at the trade officer and let them kick up the chain-

The chest was opened and the merchant's eyes widened at the brilliant sight housed within. "I believe that your people are somewhat practical and straightforward about the value of gifts. So we will make this clear and very forward as well, a collection of specialty computer chips manufactured by and purchased from House Sol. We do not possess the necessary engineering qualifications to make it ourselves unfortunately, so I do hope you will forgive us for choosing to do a more extravagant than heartfelt gift."

There was a very dry swallow of the throat. "It's a very...expensive and welcomed gift, I daresay," The merchant hoarsely told and almost wanted to lunge for it the moment the chest was closed. "I-I would be honored if you entrusted it to me so."

"Good. Ah, but please wait a moment." Radana flipped the container towards her and discretely dialed in a code that had a loud lock snapping inside from within. This was matched by an unseen bug glowing in the darkness, now tracking the shipment's location. "There. It is now sealed and cannot be opened until the right combination is entered. Should it be attempted to be forced open, the contents will be lost and we will know. So instead, please concern yourself with delivering it to a representative of House Archon and request them to contact us then for the code."

Internally, the merchant cursed at the extensive and well-thought out security. There went their hopes of playing both sides. Glumly, they accepted the package and grumbled out a promise to keep it somewhere safe while in transit. They could only hope now that the delivery was going to be smooth and done with, hopefully without the elders deciding they were going to be the envoy they sent back next!

What a terrible trip, they certainly should've gone on another route instead...

- There's a little bit more after this, the turn's not yet over. You aren't the only actors on stage.

All the stars a stage, and all the States and Houses around them merely players.

Dorothea finished the Lycoris Sanctuary, so thats a big up! Thank you Celeshiro and I'm looking forward to the next update!

EDIT: OH also the world building this update felt very high quality. As the person (i.e. Violet) that is essentially responsible for the stability of the government, that bank scene was very gratifying. And the world building in the Lycoris Sanctuary was particularly believable and interesting. I never saw Dorothea as a priest or a spiritual advisor before we started building the Sanctuary but now I'm not sure I'll unsee it. Priest-Cop. Or... Chaplain-Cop?

Cycle 17.1
"Good evening everybody! This is Sundown News, broadcasting live from Mars! Your number one trusted news source for occurrences across the stars, covering everything everyday! Let us begin our nightly program with the latest in our breaking news about ongoing events."

Border Skirmishes Over...For Now!

"We begin first with continued coverage of the border incidents between vassals belonging respectively to Great House Orochi and Great House York. It is believed to have been initially instigated by House Orochi in a bid to acquire some of the more industrious vassals of their rivals, with experts citing a perceived desire for acquisition. However, their elite mercenaries were soundly beaten back by the walking fortresses of House York coming to the defense, but as loyal viewers would no, they didn't stop there.

"No indeed, they seemed intent on making sure that blood was spilled on both sides of the borders! A series of lightning retaliatory raids on Orochi vassals that has destroyed some of their military assets, leaving them somewhat reeling. Curiously, there has been no further attempts at occupation, only destruction and disarmament followed by withdrawal with all the loot. Our war room suggests that the warriors of House York were satisfied with their trophies so, with diplomatic channels indicating a rapid return to neutral, if tense relations. Listen to their joint press statement now."

"It is our belief that there has been dire and tragic misunderstandings regarding the buildup of military assets along our borders. Before cooler heads prevailed, shots were fired and a series of unfortunate fights broke out. But full glad are we here to announce, together, that peace has returned. We will endeavor to do all we can to make sure it stays that way."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the conflict, and we hope that such violence between member houses are soon at an end."

A Forbidden Acquisition

"Next up, we have a shocking new scandal developing that affects the Great Houses Tyto and Ababil. It would appear that one House Archon, vassal to Tyto, made a bid to purchase some of Ababil's legendary brews for what they claim to be self-improvement. The procedure had gone through regular channels until it reached the higher offices of House Ababil who, upon discovery of Archon's allegiances, has declared not just formal denial of the attempt but condemnation of it as well! We have a sound bite now."

"This is a clear attempt by House Tyto to acquire trade specialty products of Ababil not for the betterment of humankind, but for subversive purposes that we cannot in good conscience permit. They do it through one of their puppets as well, an insult that assumes we would not have the smarts to realize it so! As such, we are hereby ordering all citizens and affiliates of House Archon to vacate territories of Ababil and her noble vassals immediately."

"This has caused an outrage that House Tyto has since picked up upon, claiming that House Archon was indeed acting on its own interests instead on that of their suzerain. Their spokesperson has even gone so far as to release a rare counterargument that we will be playing now."

"This…controversy about the personal and private purchase of rare goods is...too much. House Archon did this of their own...will. It is not us. It is never us. But House Ababil...they see us all the same, and that is all they shall ever see. Purely discrimination. No further...comment."

"As we speak, there are undoubtedly businesses, immigrants, and dual citizens likely dealing with the fallout of this sudden disbarment. We can only wish them the best moving forwards."

Opinion Piece: The Free States Question

"Moving on, a certain piece of Senatorial legislation has been drawing the attention and gaze of so many as of late. Namely the Ceasefire Accords, and the potential renewal thereof. It is a hotly debated topic that I am unable to sufficiently cover myself, so joining me are two passionate individuals from either side of the debate. For the sake of privacy, their identities shall be kept anonymous. Let us begin with the first guest."

"Thank you. I am a proud citizen of the United Empire, and I firmly believe in the dream set forth by the Stellarch, of one humanity under one banner. The Free States are nothing but renegade nations that refuse to consider equal contribution to the benefit of all humanity, and instead believe firmly in hoarding one's own resources even while their neighbors beg and starve for aid."

"It is a very capitalistic approach, one could say. Would you call it selfish so?"

"What other word is there for it? Under the United Empire, you at least can make a plea so that everybody can understand your plight. There is nothing of the sort in the Free States, from what I've heard. It is their so-called Council States that decide who lives and who dies by setting their agenda of priorities. How awful, to have lives riding on the whims of these warlords!"

"Some would compare these Council States to the Great Houses on a similar level of a vassalage system. What do you think of the comparison?"

"Utter stardust. The system that the Great Houses use within our mighty union is merely one of bureaucratic convenience, of making sure that communities of similar interest are able to socialize and work with one another in a manner that truly is emblematic of humanity's true potential! The Free States have no such obligations, only interested in whatever their poor servants are forced to offer as tribute."

"I see. A very interesting perspective that I think many could agree with. But regardless, let's move onto our other guest."

"It is slightly unfair that I cannot make rebuttal until now, but I will do as I must. I too am a proud citizen of the United Empire, and I really do also believe in the Stellarch's vision of a united humanity. But at the same time, we have to realize that this grand dream is, for now, nothing more than that: a dream. There will always be lines or ways to divide and separate us, topics and issues we cannot see eye to eye on all the time. Sometimes, they're even big enough to have us split wholly into two different aspects, such that which the United Empire and the Free States find themselves in right now. In that manner, they are not wholly unlike us and we should understand that."

"An interesting opening. Please, continue."

"I believe the question is not about the actual existence of the Free States themselves, but instead about the peace we can hopefully obtain with them. They may not recognize the Stellarch as the true voice of humanity, but there is no need then to throw stones at them so. We must simply live and let live, respecting their choice so."

"So you would push for a peaceful agreement? Meaning the renewal of the current ceasefire agreement."

"Absolutely. While I am sure my opponent would point out the price is not quite free, it is still the closest thing we have come to a tentative and more permanent form of coexistence. Maybe it can't happen everywhere in the United Empire, maybe it's only in one region of space where it gets upheld. But that shining example I believe is enough to inspire others to follow suit in time, proof that this conflict need not define and ruin our people so. Hence, I cast my vote towards renewing the ceasefire not in support of the Free States, but in support of peace that we can all benefit from."

"A very touching and sound rebuttal that will undoubtedly sway many. It is quite refreshing to have such a civilized debate. Now, I open the floor for a counter to the rebuttal-"

"The Free States want to ask us to pay tribute to them! In return, they would so 'graciously' withhold their armies from invasion! It is not peace, it is parasitism! For all their boasts and claims of working hard to be your own individual, it is clear they are hypocrites of the highest order! Voting for the renewal isn't just cowardice, it's actively surrendering to them!"

"Please, calm down. We are civilized individuals-"

"It isn't surrender, it's coexistence! The United Empire especially is a rich and prosperous conglomeration, while the Free States have troubles themselves. This is simply their way of asking for aid without losing face. We should remain open-minded and tolerant of it so, not stoop to such crass negativity in an effort to belittle our fellow man!"

"Honored guests, please settle down-"

"A small price in prosperity? Tell that to the struggling Houses that so desperately need that instead. Our own children starve while those on the other side spend them on new ways to kill their parents!"

"Their investments are their own choice that we should respect! They surely are just thinking of self-protection, a concept I'm sure you spineless lot are quite familiar with, calling for such unnecessary conflict without sacrificing a drop of blood-"

"How dare you! I served in my House's military for years, I've served in tours against the Free States, I've seen the atrocities they commit on the battlefield!"

"Some I'm sure that you've taken inspiration for against them in kind-!"

"My most sincere apologies for the unexpected ferocity and vulgarity of the debate. I had hoped to have a mannered talk between two passionate experts, and hadn't expected it to turn out this way. We'll be right back after a short ad break."

"Ya'll look mighty tired after a long day at work. Ya'll don't need to worry about dinner. Come on down to Lancelot Bar and Grill, just off Jupiter, and grab a seat. Order some delicious fries and burgers, or maybe even treat yourself to a steak. Ya earned it. That's Lancelot Bar and Grill, just off Jupiter. Happy hour begins at 16:00, Solar time."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Trying out a new format. Hope it plays well.

I was wondering. Orochi has its gene warriors, York its factory fortresses, Ababil its potions and Tyto are psionic.

What does Sol have that keeps them top dog? The most powerful warships that let them completely destroy the enemy fleet and simply bomb them into compliance or Stone Age?

That due to their territories being the oldest and most developed they can field a big enough military that the others tricks wouldn't mean much due to sheer size disparity?

Advanced technology that means each of their soldiers are worth several of anyone else?

It seems implied that they benefit by having a little bit of everything everybody else has, but I agree that's a very interesting question! Sol does seem to be the source of most "standard" technology, so it would stand to reason that they simply excel in conventional means - largely because House Sol has defined what conventional means.

EDIT: It is also possible that they don't have a single huge edge over people. History is a process not a set of characteristics. Just because an Empire will prove unable to maintain itself doesn't mean it collapses overnight. Decline and collapse can take decades or centuries. It might be that theirs is a regime that would have fallen within a generation or two without our intervention. It might be that the new Stellarch was going to lead the Empire into a new Golden Age.

My main money is that the Empire mostly plays the houses off of each other. My only concern is that loyalists, particularly powerful loyalists, may end up being just another toy. Ultimately the Stellarch must serve the whole Empire, but one hopes they can at least remember their allies.

That line of thinking, the one I just spoke of, is probably how several loyalists have turned neutral. I hope we don't. House Sol did us a great turn, and our people were great subjects of the House Sol from their own universe. It is fair and just that we would be loyal to them - family connections notwithstanding.

That due to their territories being the oldest and most developed they can field a big enough military that the others tricks wouldn't mean much due to sheer size disparity?
Sol does seem to be the source of most "standard" technology, so it would stand to reason that they simply excel in conventional means - largely because House Sol has defined what conventional means.
House Sol is geographically the heart of the United Empire, made up of the very first worlds that humanity had colonized once they reached space. These are the Core worlds, the most developed planets of the galaxy. They boast having super-heavy industry that's been running for generations, matched by high population numbers to utilize it do. Each one of these can easily match the homeworld capital of a Great House, and that doesn't even account for the Sol System itself.

But it's not all military and industry. The central location also serves as the natural gathering point for cultural and technology exchange. It's critically also the least prone to being dragged into direct conflict on its soil, so it's a valuable safe space for the Academies to educate future talent.
My main money is that the Empire mostly plays the houses off of each other.
Yes, and it's an interesting relationship. Because the Core desperately needs raw resources to maintain itself, so it can't afford to just ignore any of the Great Houses. But at the same time, the Great Houses if all united could actually pose a serious threat to House Sol. It's a balancing game all are playing at.

"My most sincere apologies for the unexpected ferocity and vulgarity of the debate. I had hoped to have a mannered talk between two passionate experts, and hadn't expected it to turn out this way. We'll be right back after a short ad break."
I have no clue why they'd expect anything different. :V

The Empire's Great Houses sees war as not a waste, but a way to aquire more and distract their rivals whom might otherwise turn against them.
Never mind the fact they probably look at the Free States through the same lens they view each other, which...

Yeah, there is a LOT riding against peace here sadly. Highlighted here, between the irony that exists because the Great houses won't ever vocally recognize reality as it is, while at the same time looking at any force that exists as an invasion force. Which...
They kinda are, but likely more out of necessity than what the Great Houses think given the personality rolls.

Cycle 18.0
You leaned back and hummed absently to the tune of the little jingle from the ad. Radana had a more visceral reaction with a loud dismissive snort, clearly thinking very little about this diner with its rather folksy attitude. "I daresay that they're willing to bet one is too tired as well to notice the prices of their food when they come by. How opportunistic of them."

"Would you prefer it a station over Uranus then?" You asked dryly, hiding the grin at your friend's scandalized reaction. "My, I didn't know you liked the red light orbit-"

"Moving on!" She all but shouted, some heavy coughing to accent the point. "What do you think about recent events?"

You dropped the jovial tone and leaned back in your office chair, eyebrows moving into a furrow while you considered it. While you didn't have spies in the various other Great Houses (yet), you still were a master in understanding shadow wars and the hidden nature these disputes could disguise themselves as. Combined with your extensive education, you knew how to read between the lines to point out to others about what really was going on. "First of all, it's clear that House Orochi and House York are quite anxious for a fight. Orochi in particular instigated the fight, but York was a tougher foe than they had expected. Maybe it was a quick raid to loot something, but either way, it went badly."

"What about the counter-incursion? Was there any reason behind that?"

"York probably just saw the opening and took it. Unlike Orochi, they didn't get greedy and once they hit their desired assets, they booked it to reinforce their borders." You could see it in your mind's eye, how newly veteran raiders would be training up fresh and eager recruits attracted by the spoils. "York came out of this likely having a superior military, while Orochi is fumbling and trying to rebuild their famed mercenaries."

Radana nodded and put a hand to her chin in thought. "Yet they try to push that both sides have agreed to a ceasefire. I suppose then it means that York is not confident they can immediately push for a direct and open conflict to kick Orochi further."

"Very likely so. The snake is only wounded, but not out." You paused, then pressed your lips. "Or perhaps they would rather save their energy for an attack on the Free States, with the renewal coming up."

"Ah, that is a very important point to consider. After all, whoever happens to earn glory and honor on a campaign against them is sure to be the talk of the grapevine," She immediately agreed. Then Radana turned to the other piece of news that involved the Great Houses. "Also of talk on the grapevine is this mess between Tyto and Ababil, with Archon stuck in-between. Do you think that it was just an innocent purchase as claimed?"

"Could be, could be not. I personally lean towards it being an unfortunately set of coincidences," You tiredly declared with a shake of the head. "If anything, I suspect more that it's an excuse that Ababil seized upon to enforce a deportation policy."

"What? Really?" You friend actually looked surprised at the idea. "But why?"

"House Tyto is known for being a little sneaky, so that naturally means people are going to think of spies. And the best way to counter spies without alerting their master is just kicking all their people out, instead of black bagging them," You thoroughly explained with a roll of your neck, very much in your element. "It's honestly something I would have considered as well in their place, but I think I would do a better execution of it."

Radana gave you a long look before letting out a quiet sigh at your baiting smirk. "Go on. Tell me what you would do to expertly remove spies from our nation without alerting anybody."

"Get them booked on suspended driving licenses," You smugly revealed with a cackle. "You can't get anywhere quietly without one of those. They'd have to walk everywhere to spy on us, or risk taking public transportation filled with cameras. And if they try to get around it? That's grounds for serious imprisonment and deportation naturally."

She stared and shook her head. Sometimes, your own brilliance truly scared your closest allies.

- You will note that you have a new Post building available. This one is all about increasing your influence, which means more voters, which means more Senate or Military power. The reason behind its odd cost is to make it less a full net positive on Influence, especially given how powerful more votes can be in their own right. I'm not above tweaking it down the line if calculations show it leaning too hard.
