@MysticKnightJoe
Would it be possible to have Gene train for fighting outside of her Knight? Maybe in the spare time between missions? Actually, expanding on that, could we have a vote for one or two things for Gene to work on between campaigns? I mean, I seriously doubt we'd be able to fight a Dark Eldar like the Silent in close-quarters, but combined with what happened with that orc attack in the first arc, I think Gene might realize she needs some kind of personal combat skill.

[X] Return to your mounts and stay put

Going to the Learnean half of the camp is reckless after we've been told they've been corrupted, and reporting to Helios is just going to put more stress on our temporary alliance. Let's bunker down and consolidate .

I will put something like that up for the vote next mission.

"It is the latter," The Silent declares. She returns to a casual pose as if she hadn't just been starting to strangle you. "If Ilorvitan isn't able to be contacted by the Shadowseer, it is because he doesn't wish to be contacted. Your Markos is definitely dead though. An Incubi like Ilorvitan will survive anywhere." You can hear the sick smile in her voice as she continues. "A pathetic human soldier like Markos will die. It was pure luck he survived so long on Velontos. The fact he is dead now fills me with such joy. Perhaps Ilorvitan slew him. When we see each other again he will regale me with stories of how he sliced the hated boy in twain." The Eldar shudders as if musing on a pleasant experience with a lover instead of deriving joy from a murder. It slowly sets in that for her, it may very well be the same thing.
Ah, she doesn't know the hand Harlequins had in Markos' survival and actions.

[X] Return to your mounts and stay put

You and X9-A trudge back to your berth. As you approach, you suddenly hear alarms sound out. It seems the Lernaeans have discovered the mess The Silent made of their camp. Alex rushes over to you. "Gene! What the hell is going on!" She grips your arms tightly. "Your shaking!" You smile weakly at your sisters worry.

"Get into your mount, Alex," you say. "The Lernaeans are traitors. For now, we are working with the Eldar to destroy them."

Alex flinches in shock. "Are you certain of this?" Still, she starts to move to the machine. You follow close to her.

"An Inquisitor is working with them," you respond with calm you don't feel. Alex nods carefully at that.

"You trust an Inquisitor?" Ravana's voice rings out from vox speakers. "Sorts like those have their own agenda, Emperor only knows what this one wants."

"He proved himself one," you say. You finally reach your mount. X9-A moves away from you after a final quick bow. She jogs back to the crawler. Steadily you move into your machine. "We have to do what we have to do."

"Understood, your highness," Vali says coldly.

"I knew it!" Paragon groans. "I had a bad feeling this whole time. Bloody Saint shit." You think you hear the man slamming a fist on the wheel of the crawler.

"Your Highness...what do we do now?" Dolce's voice is soft. She sounds so weak and scared, despite the mighty machine she currently drives.

You set yourself in your thrones. Grim determination fills your soul as Righteousness's Machine Spirit makes its presence known. As ever, it fills you with resolve.

[X] Wait for Helios's Order
-[X] Ready weapons and fan out to prevent any Lernaeans from escaping before it's time

"Ready weapons, fan out," your voice hisses through the vox. Without waiting for a response or affirmative, you move carefully forward, lascannon and power lance at the ready. You hear the clunks of moving Knights as the rest follow your lead.

Light flickers through the fog. Lasgun fire. Helios's voice suddenly cracking through the vox almost makes you leap. "Princess. They are moving. We just got hit by a massed force. We are holding them off fine, but a squad of their Sentinals is moving on your position." You can just make out the clunking light machines coming your way.

"Are they mad?" Ravana gasps out. "It will be a bloodbath."

"I don't think they care, Princess Ravana," Vali growls.

The Sentinals rush out of the mist in a disorganized block of metal. A torrent of lasfire slams into your ready void shields and crackles harmlessly. Your return fire tears into the weaker machines like a knife through soft flesh. An even dozen of the scout weapons fall but still, they press on. There is no sound but the sound of battle.

There is no cohesion. No focused fire on any of your mounts. Just a random burst of crude combat. They charge in and they are slain. "It is like they desire death," Alex says softly. "Oh Emperor, this is madness."

At last, every Sentinal lies silent, their riders dying silently. Dolce is letting out several harsh, frightened breaths. You would judge her, but you suspect if it weren't for your personal training you would be close to fearful tears as well. Something salt touches your lips. You shake softly.

"Their all dead, your highness," O'Donagh says, coldly practical. It does a decent job breaking you out of your sudden funk.

"Thank you, O'Donagh," you respond. "Move out." Steadily, the lot of you push forward. You pointedly ignore the broken wreck of the dead Lernaeans.

Helios returns grimly. "They died quickly, Princess. We are in their camp. It seems the Dark Eldar dealt with their leadership already. Found the Colonel with a knife in his stomach. All their skin is already green, Genevive. It isn't caused by exposure to the atmosphere. They are just like that naturally. Might be a common mutation here, but knowing what we know now, it seems likely it is the result of Chaos Corruption." He lets the horror sink in before continuing. "A lot of them are uncounted for. Seems some of them fled into the Blight."

You nod flatly. You formulate your response carefully.

Chasing them seems an excercise in futility, yet narrative law says they will survive if allowed to escape.

What to do...?

I agree with buli on this. It'll be a wasted effort to go after them, but they probably will survive if we don't. Better to let Helios decide for us. If anything, the Eldar might take care of them.

The Void Laughs: Chapter 29
[X] What do you wish me to do?

Fifteen minutes after the suicide attack, you move carefully through the vile swamp of Lernaea. Helios had given a direct order. Find the traitors and destroy them. Return in an hour regardless of results. Steadying yourself, you focus on the auspex. Runes marking the rest of your lance are close, though it is hard to tell. It seems the weather of the planet has turned, making the greenish fog even thicker. Even with auspex it is near impossible to see.

"Madness," Ravana snaps. Her voice is welcome, even with her irritation and fear. "We will hardly find anything in this murk." A shift to your side and you just make out Heaven's Fire. "By the Throne, we can hardly even navigate." A soft squelch rings out.

"I am getting nothing on radar, your highness," O'Donagh ques in, as if to back up Ravana's claim. "Utter silence."

"Long gone then," Vali grunts. "Damn."

"Can we return then?" Dolce asks. Fear is still clear in her voice. It chatters over every word. Poor girl. She was never fully trained for this like you were.

"No," Alex answers. "General Helios says we should look for an hour." She speaks with a glimmer of apology, which is much appreciated. "I doubt he will discipline us, but it is best to do our full duty."

Paragon suddenly speaks up. "Er...Gene. I think we found something."

You flinch in surprise at the confusion in Paragon's voice. "Saint Paragon? What did you come across?" The man has mostly been unflappable, or at the very least utterly stoic.

"We have found one of our traitors. He is dead," X9-A responds. "A not unexpected outcome."

"Yeah, but we didn't expect an arrow," Paragon grunts. "Not a massive arrow sticking out of the bastard's guts."

"I'm sorry, what?" you ask. An...arrow? "Could it be the Eldar?" You have heard strange rumors about what weaponry the Eldar bare to battle.

"Not unless the Eldar use two meter-long shafts and sharp stone tips," Paragon states gruffly. "Something else is hunting the Lernaeans, Gene. And it clearly isn't Imperial or Eldar."

You shiver. Suddenly, the Blight looks that much deeper. Arrows with stone tips are the weapons of primitive tribes. But what manner of tribe could survive in this muck without Hazsuit Technology? Should you keep moving and investigate, or turn back and report?

[] Move deeper, stay together
[] Move deeper, split up

[X] Move deeper, split up

If only to stop a complete bandwagon, I'll vote to split the party. Stone arrows are the weapons of primitives, and their would be little to fear from such beings. Besides, the extra ground covered might improve the chances of catching our prey, as well as finding out who is using bows and arrows on this planet.

[X] Return to base camp

Mostly, I worry that we're allowing ourselves to get distracted, and that someone - or something - moves in on the base camp while the Big Stick that is our maniple is led on a merry chase. Let's go back.

For those who say 'don't split up'; we're already split from the rest of the Imperial forces, maybe we should do something about that?

[X] Return to base camp

Among other reasons, if there's an unknown party at work out here, it's more urgent to come back with that information than it is to go into a situation with grave unknowns, risking that the information will never get back at all. They're clearly primitives, sure, but they still have the home advantage, and there's evidence right there that they've already taken out people who have a large tech advantage over them. Besides, they might very well be doing our work for us.
