[X] No
[X] Walk Together

I am making this vote in light of our history with Mary. Or rather, our first meeting. We did not need Practice to force her to open the door, but neither did we relent when she expressed a wish contradictory to her becoming a part of the Circle we were making then.

If this one allowed write-ins, I would have (maybe) added the following caveat at the second part:

[ ] No
[ ] Walk Together
-[ ] Follow her a few steps behind

But I am not quite sure if that's a good idea or not.

I'm not sure it's a good idea for us to go mothering over Mary too much. Our goal here is to help her build up her own strength, not to do it for her. Mary specifically asked us to stop borrowing trouble.
She has also said this:
"And that's why," her voice shuddered, but didn't break, "I know I'll get through this. Because you'll be beside me from the moment we land."
[X] Walk Together

[X] No

I'm agreeing with Faraway here; Mary wants Amanda there. Intellectually, she wants to do this alone because she believes that she needs to do this alone. Emotionally, she knows she can't do this alone, and that Amanda will be there for her no matter what. For all of her intellect, Mary has always come across to me as a person very much in-tune with her emotions. They control her decisions just as much as her intellect, rather than her ascribing mostly to logic. Her determination to save humanity, to continue the work that Amanda began, even if unintentionally, and to live up to her father's legacy...that all is what pushes her to do what she does, as far as I can tell. It isn't just her intellect and her curiosity driving her - she does science for a purpose, and emotionally driven purpose. Just like Amanda, Mary is a paragon of humanity. She is an exemplar of what baseline humans can do, the evidence that Practice isn't needed to make a difference. That just with your mind alone, you can make a stand and change things. But she'd never have gotten that resolve without Amanda. Amanda is the centering force in Mary's life; romance or not, they're partners for life. They are more than best friends, closer than family in some ways, and more tightly bound than lovers. We haven't had much chance to see this because of the way the quest was run when Amanda was president. We're seeing it now though, and assuming that they haven't been this close all along is a folly I refuse to acknowledge.

Their relationship reminds me a lot of my own best friend, albeit with a lot more physical contact. I've been friends with this man since we were toddlers, and though we rarely see each other these days, every single fucking time we do, we just click like there's never been time apart. We both have explained this to people on numerous occasions and no one gets it. We're two halves of whole. We're platonic life partners, no matter the time or distance spent apart. We've both changed a lot, but we still get along like brothers - no, better than brothers, because we both have brothers and neither of us get along nearly as well with them as with each other.

Mary and Mandy remind me of that. And I know that he'd want me to be there in a situation like this, even if he told me not to. Same goes for me. And while me and him are nothing like Amanda and Mary, and our relationship is both so similar and yet so different, well, we're different people. Doesn't keep me from seeing the signs of the same type of connection between Amanda and Mary as between me and him.

At the same time, using Practice to heal those scars...I want Mary to heal naturally. As tempting as it can be, we really shouldn't just use Practice for fucking everything. It's a point we've debated over before, I believe, and it's something I'll stand by. Not only do we not understand practice nearly enough for this sort of shit, we shouldn't be fucking with someone's head with Practice when we don't know what we're doing. Especially not MARY'S HEAD. THE MOST IMPORTANT MIND IN THE FUCKING STAR SYSTEM. So yeah. We support Mary conventionally, the way we always have, not relying on Practice to solve her problems.

If the write-in is allowed, I will be switching to that, because it's the best of both options.

[X] Yes
[X] Walk Together

If using Practice to help with emotional troubles is already a known thing, I'd say there's little risk for somebody focused on Mending with as much experience as Amanda. Simply reaching out to Mary and letting her know how much Amanda wants to help would be helpful, and actively trying to help Mary heal would be even better.

[X] No
[X] Walk Together

Just walk along as silent support. Practiced healing shouldn't be done except when asked for. If asked for, I think it should be 'growth' rather than 'heal' as it is about overcoming the past, not erasing it.

Will Mary turn into a witch as a result of that grief-related breakdown?
Why are you looking at me like that? That's a serious question, we are in a magical girl quest after all.

@Faraway-R your write-in is approved.

@Snowfire what does Mary say when ASKED whether she wants to be Practice Mended? It seems like it should be her decision, not Amanda's

Yes. Also no. There's a reason that this is falling to a vote. I was actually having trouble working out a basis for votes on this post, until I realised that Mary's mind wouldn't be functioning all that fully at the present moment.

Yeah, no. Not that type of quest. And several people already know what would happen if a Potential ever got into PMMM :V

Yes, but Mary isn't the magical girl; she's the Tomoyo Daidouji to Amanda's Cardcaptor Sakura.

Oh fuck you

I will fight the magical girl tag to the very end :p More seriously, this is just grief and pain. Nothing more than that. To be quite honest, it would be a distraction, and one unfitting to the universe of PW.
You already have a "totally not magical girls" tag, beware lest you end up with the tags of "very definitely NOT magical girls" and "Suspiciously Specific Denial" as well! :p:evil:

Also, since my write-in was approved by QM and by @Garm352 here it is:

[X] No
[X] Walk Together
-[X] Follow her a few steps behind

All right, you've swayed me on "walk together" and I think that letting Mary both physically and symbolically take the lead is exactly what she needs.

[X] No

-[X] Follow her a few steps behind

I'm considering to offer another write-in:

[_] No
-[_] Unless Mary has a panic attack or nervous breakdown, then soothe it with Practice, but no further

If I understood correctly, intent - not only the conscious one - is a part of what creates Practice results. Are you sure you want to prove or disprove that assumption on Mary?

That's exactly why bringing it up here is meaningful. Our votes and discussions influence Amanda's motivations and thought processes. A "Yes" vote is an invitation to idealize the outcome. A conditional vote, such as my proposed write-in, is a reflection of what we already know to be an underlying hesitation in Amanda's desires. I'm seeking to establish that what Amanda really wants, deep down, is to provide the support that Mary needs to work through everything on her own, and what she DOESN'T want is to do it for her. If this is Amanda's heartfelt belief, not just her stated conscious intent, then Practice ought to honor that.

As I understand here, the intent is to use Practice essentially as a mental anesthetic - helping Mary deal if the pain is too bad, but letting her clean out the wounds naturally. And only if necessary.

That right?

I'd liken it more to a mental EpiPen, something to administer in an emergency situation to bolster her if she were to go into shock. I don't want Mary to feel numb or to block out the pain itself; I want her to be able to continue functioning despite the issue she's dealing with instead of breaking down.

EDIT: I've had panic attacks before. They're totally maladaptive. There is absolutely no benefit to letting someone have a panic attack. They're so bad that we have a drug called lorazepam that a panic attack victim can take when the attack starts to end it as soon as possible; the drug inhibits memory formation and we still use it because it's better to stop it and not be able to remember what happened for a couple hours afterward than to have to deal with the utter dysfunction of severe panic attack. If Practice can provide the benefit of soothing the physiological symptoms without interfering with mental functioning, then I want that.

Hey, am I really wrong? Mary helped design the totally-not-a-magical-girl-outfit that Amanda is wearing; she's absolutely salivating at getting more data on the totally-not-magic that Mandy does and is totally Mandy's lesbian life partner, whatever canon and the show's writer says.

I'm concerned this is one of those instances where we're trying to cover too many bases, and end up covering none of them instead. I'm of the opinion that Mary needs Mandy there to guide her over the threshold, just like she needed her there on the plane, but I can see the argument for giving her more of a push rather than being right there beside her. I'll have to think about this a bit more, but for right now I think I'll stick with the original vote.
