The Hounds. (An Original Text-Adventure style Quest)

Meat the Team, End/ On the Road to Rooksvale, Pt. 1.
>You and I are linked. Probably something to do with you pulling that last lance out of my frozen torso.
>weird idea but maybe ask her to let you use more of your power? I mean we're going to have to tell her that she basically put a ring on us when she freed us so now the two of you are an item (phrasing like that should be good for a laugh) but if she's your "master" (more joking material right there as well) maybe she can let you cut lose a little bit more. Oh and since the two of you are alone right now probably a good time that you're kinda stuck with her and her group for awhile until someone can figure out how to take the collar off you.
"Sombra....after you pulled that last lance out of me, did you happen to feel anything happen?" Teth asked, trying to ease into it first.

"Well, now that you mention it, I did get this funny feeling in the back of my head." The Night Dog uttered. "Pretty sure it was just the Tech Wyvern baring down on us, though."

"Perhaps not." Teth began. "We're linked. Most likely due to that lance removal." Sombra, for her part, blinked.

"Linked?" She repeated in a confused tone.

"How do I put this....We're Partners now." Teth continued. "That means, you and I will be working together from now on. I can't access my full strength without a Partner, even disregarding whatever limits this Collar has on me."

"....So, wait, does this mean we're like married or something!?" Sombra asked, starting to panic. "Aw man, I wasn't ready for marriage! I'm not good with committed relationships!"

"Relax, it's not like marriage." Teth said, chuckling slightly due to the joke one of the Head Voices had wanted him to make. "Just think of it like a bond between twins or very close friends. Something like that."

"Oh." Sombra said, starting to calm down now. "Yeah, I could do that. Soooo, what, you're like a big brother to me or something like that?"

"Something like that, yes." Teth nodded in affirmation.

"Huh...." Sombra said as she gave it some thought. "....I always wanted a big brother." She said with a smile. "So....How exactly does this work? You said you need me to access your full strength?"

"Or at least, more of it." The Defender uttered as he tapped his collar. "Whatever this is is limiting my full abilities, but I theorize that I could tap into more of my potential power if we work together as partners. Basically, you give me commands on the battlefield and I'll get a boost into doing that ability. At least, that's how it should work in theory."

"Huh...So, I'll kinda be like a Guide for you then." Sombra said as she rubbed her chin.

"I get the distinct impression that 'Guide' is with a capital 'G'." Teth remarked. Sombra giggled in response.

"I'll explain later, it's a bit of a story." The Night Dog uttered. "Besides, we need to save some things for our road trips, right?" It was Teth's turn to chuckle. That was fair. "So, 'Partner', got any more questions?" Plenty. The usual ones about the Empire not withstanding, where his weapons were and if they grabbed any of those Javelins among them, but first one that comes to mind that he felt like asking was-

>So, what's Standing? Some measure of the power you've got?
Teth asks this.

"Well, Standing is in fact a measure of strength. See, Standing measured in 'ranks'. Each rank results in an increase in power to the Mon that 'ranks up', while changing them subtly in terms of what they look like." She pointed to herself. "For example, my silver highlights used to be less pronounced before I got to my current rank."

"Standing itself is increased by gaining a mystical resource known as 'Power'. Mon get Power by fighting, defeating other Mon in combat, defeating Machina, Monsters, ect. We can also get Power as a reward from major accomplishments, like completing missions people give us or growing older each year, though that's usually only a tiny amount of Power compared to what we get from fighting. You need increasingly more Power to go up in Standing Rank the higher up you go, and you get less Power from defeating less powerful opponents. Defeating similarly ranked or higher opponents gives a major increase in Power, allowing those of us that fight challenging battles increase in Standing more quickly."

"There are three categories of Standing Rank, going up by ten. From 10 downwards, you have 'Light-Weights' or 'Rookies'. That's what this team is made out of. From 11 all the way to 20, you've got the 'Middle-Weights'. Roughly speaking, that's the level I'd say you're closest to, given that you took out a level 12 equivalent Brawler fairly easily. 21-30 are the 'Heavy-Weights'. Those guys are real bruisers, capable of leveling whole forests with one strong attack each."

"I see." Teth said with a nod. This was matching up with what he could remember on the subject. "You are divided up based on strength statistics and get more strength by defeating opponents. What if you kill them?"

"Oh...Um, yeah, that's the thing, you don't get much of any power if you kill another Mon." Sombra stated. "If you kill a Mon, then you'll just be labeled a murderer and not have gotten much of a boost for your trouble. Plus, it's kinda hard to kill us, you actually have to be going out of your way to do that." Teth nodded at that.

"Alright then, I think I'm getting it....What about the various Mon and their types?"

"Oh man, you're really giving me a brain work out." Sombra laughed, "It's usually Glimmer who handles this sort of stuff, you know? Tell you what, let's let Glimmer tell you about that sort of stuff, and we can spend the rest of our time getting to know each other since we're partners now. Deal?"

"Deal." Teth nodded.

"Great!" Sombra said with a smile. "Okay, so, to start off, what's your favorite food?"

"People have favorites?" Teth asked, acting confused. That earned him another laugh as the pair spent the rest of the night talking. It was the start of a beautiful partnership.

"-nd that's the various different Classes and Types of Mon!" Glimmer cheerfully uttered as the group walked down a well worn path in the woods. They were making good time to the town, being only a few hours away.

"That's a lot to take in." Teth stated.

"Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it in no time." The pink Cast Dragoness said with a friendly smile. She paused as her scarf started to point in a direction. It's tip was glowing gold. "Huh, wonder what that could mean?"

"Well, it glowed pinkish for Mechana, glowed purple and blue for the big guy over there, and it glowed red for those Monsters we faced on the way up here." Tyco listed off. "Gold's a new one."

Mon Codex: Cast Dragon.
Base Mon Species: Dracoform.

Class: Caster.

Type: Magic.

Summary: Cast Dragons are an uncommon type of Caster in the world. Like with many Casters across the various species of Mon, the Cast Dragon are a flexible type of Mon, as their Typing for Magic allows them to use virtually any elemental typing, though with the caveat that the produced attack will be primarily composed of raw magical forces rather than relatively mundane elements. As such, Cast Dragons are able to deal a great deal of damage to magically-weak forces, while also making them prime targets for magic eaters and almost powerless against magic-proof forces.

Thanks to the flexibility of their typing, almost any role can filled by a Cast Dragon. The most common niche they fill is that of support, studying and utilizing magical skills to aid members of their team in combat. Healing spells, barrier spells, and many other more esoteric abilities come into play when a support specialized Cast Dragon takes to the field. Thanks to the fact that Cast Dragons are formed from Dracoforms, they often have access to material and resources from the onset of their journey as their often well off families provide support from a distance back in their homelands.

When they got some free time, definitely. But first, they were going to inspect where the scarf was pointing to.

>Have Defender head in the direction the scarf is pointing first to scout it out.
"I think it would be a good idea if I went ahead to scout the area, make sure it's safe." Teth uttered. "We don't know what gold means, so I think we should be cautious." Most of the others in the team looked at him like he was being overly cautious, but Sombra nodded.

"Alright, see if it's alright for the rest of us. We'll be lying in wait." The Night Dog stated. Teth nodded in understanding before he started heading off in the direction of where the scarf was pointing to. The short walk through the woods alone wasn't all that welcome, nor was it too off putting. He was still getting to know them, but he greatly preferred sticking with the group than being on his own. Still, he was the toughest of them all in terms of raw durability, so if anyone was going to surely survive whatever this was, it was him.

"...." Teth couldn't help but let his eyes wander, inspecting the forest around him. Pink and purple feathered birds chirped as they went about their buisness, the tall and healthy trees flush full of living leaves. He'd been told by Glimmer that it was currently summer time, though one wouldn't immediately know it from the shade provided by the trees. Still, he saw enough evidence to confirm it for himself.

He was confident the others would like this place. Hama would probably be practicing her Aetherworks while going on and on about the Eleven, Asar would probably have found a nice place to relax....Til....Til would have like the experiences from living among the Mon that called this place home. He-

Teth stopped his contemplation as he came upon what just had to be the source of the scarf's reason to be pointing: A large chest was laying under the shade of a the treeline, propped up against the trees. It was pristine and made of the finest craftsmanship, promising those that looked within a fine treasure or two. Teth immediately knew something was wrong about it. It was too...pristine. It can't have been left out here for very long. Furthermore, who just leaves an unguarded chest laying around in the woods? It made no sense. Even though his senses were telling him that it contained loot like it promised, his gut had an ill omen to it. He could easily go back to the group and show them what it was, see what they thought, or he could check it out himself right then and there.

>Suggest something for Teth to do.

On the Road to Rooksvale, Pt. 3.
>look for any obvious ambush spots, perhaps snipers hiding in treetops..
Looking around, Teth didn't see any tell tale signs of a team waiting in ambush. His senses, dulled as they were, also didn't pick up anything obvious. So far, it didn't seem like this was a set up for an ambush. Probably. Maybe.

>Poke it and see if it's an ambush or a mimic
Oh, he'll give it a poke alright. Summoning a ball of Ghost Fire into his hand, he chucked the ethereal flame at the chest. Upon impact, the fire left a sizzling burn mark on the chest's no-longer pristine frame. A terrible howl escaped from it as it's top portion swung open, revealing an organic looking interior. It was a maw, surrounded by many sharp, pointed teeth. 'Mimic' it is, then.

The unsightly thing suddenly sprouted arms and legs, long and unnaturally thin with old, dried flesh that was taut against the muscle and bone beneath. A far cry from the pristine look of the chest portion of the monster. At that moment, Teth heard his new teammates calling out to him.

Not waiting for them to get here, Teth blocked a swipe the monster tried to hit him with before punching it with his free fist. The creature slammed into the tree with a splinter in the spot where it'd hit him and the thick tree winding up falling over. Undeterred, the creature hopped back up unto its legs and let loose with its long tongue. Teth caught it with ease, increasing his weight in order to keep it from pulling him in. Effectively stuck, the creature tried and failed to pull itself free from its captor's grip. Teth considered his options. He could simply rip the thing's tongue out, or perhaps drag it in to pull its lid and body apart with his hands. Then again, holding it in place for his teammates to come in and kill it to get some free Power wasn't such a bad idea either.

>Suggest something for Teth to do.

>pump the things mouth full of ghost fire. If it dies, it dies. If it's still alive when you team gets here they can finish it off.

On the Road to Rooksvale, Pt. 3.
>pump the things mouth full of ghost fire. If it dies, it dies. If it's still alive when you team gets here they can finish it off.
>Keep it alive for teammates to eliminate, doesn't seem like it can escape in time before the team arrives
Taking both suggestions into account, Teth summoned a ball of Ghost Fire and tossed it into the things gaping maw. A scream echoed through the woods as its maw caught fire, blue-white flames erupting from its opening and shutting maw. It actually bit its own tongue off during that little episode.

"We're here, wha-Mimic!" Sombra shouted as the rest of the team approached. The thing was too caught up with its own burning mouth to notice the team that now surrounded it. "Ty, pelt it, Glim, hold it down, me and Cin'll kill it!" The Team Leader shouted. Without another word, the team sprang into action: Tyco let loose with his weapon, the spray of energy based rounds slamming against the Mimic and shredding the ground and trees around it.

Glimmer cast a spell that caused mystical bindings to form around the creature's limbs while chains sprang out from them and attached the ground. They went taut and held the beast in place while Sombra took out her blade and started to slash at the beast, coming in and out of focus as she 'Slash-Dash'd to and fro. Cinder didn't waste any time and immediately went for the things mouth, trying to pry it apart. Sombra refocused her efforts and started to slash at the hinges connecting the lid to the main body of the chest. Another three seconds passed before finally, the thing was split in two, its lid soaring through the aid as its main body shuddered and collapsed in a heap unto the ground.

It continued to twitch on the ground, to which Cinder replied with a double hammer fist strike to it from above, causing its weakened body to split apart.

"Got it!" Glimmer called out.

"Good work everyone!" Sombra cheerfully stated as she sheathed her blade. "We keep that up and we'll be ranking up in no time!" She turned to look at Teth. "Good work on handling it by yourself big guy, but don't start getting a big head or anything. That was just a low level one."

"Noted." Teth stated as the group started to sift through the wreckage. "What are you doing?"

"Monsters like to eat anything they find, even gear. Mimics in particular love eating gear in order to trick treasure finding spells into locating them." Glimmer spouted off as she thoughtfully held up her scarf. "Given that Mimics are one of the few Monsters that totally lack a Presence when they're in their hidden form, they're very hard to spot." She turned to look at him. "This scarf of my pointed a red point not too long ago. I'm guessing gold is treasure and red is Monsters."

"Makes sense to me." Teth uttered as he continued to observe the loot hunt.

"I got something!" Tyco said as he pulled out a sheathed blade. "Aw man, it's just a sword." He turned to his friends. "Anyone want it?"

>Suggest something for Teth to do.
>Give the sword to whom?

>Can you use a sword? Because otherwise I think Sombra's the only explict sword user in this group, though Cinder might be able to make use of the thing.
He was trained to use a vast variety of melee weapons, though swords weren't his specialty. That honor went to the Hound known as The Blade, Theo Ryn. The one that was effectively the unofficial leader and official face of the Hounds. Besides, he preferred his trusty hammer. He reminded himself to look into finding out where it was on this world. He hated the thought of a family heirloom like that being lost for good.

>can anyone seance anything special about the sword? If not give it to whoever uses swords that wants a new sword.
> Inspect sword before deciding who to give, may have an enchantment on it which may be useful to know about
Inspecting the blade, in terms of design and construction, it was fairly straightforward and utilitarian. A simple single and straight edged blade stretched out from the small, squarish crossguard and grip that could fit two hands. A backsword of some kind? He wasn't sure, swords was Theo's department. Just below the crossguard, embedded into the design of the blade so as to not get in the way of the wielder's hands, was a ruby like gem, which shimmered in the rays of light penetrating the treeline. Inspecting it with his senses, he could tell there was some kind of enchantment on it, but he wasn't familiar enough with non-Aetherwork's type magic to tell what exactly the enchantment is. Maybe Glimmer could tell?

"Glimmer, can you tell us what enchantment this thing has?" Teth asked.

"Hmm." The Cast Dragoness hummed as she took the sword and gave it a thorough look through. "A fire enchantment, if I'm not mistaken. A common one, linked to the gem here rather than directly applied to the blade." Fire, eh?

"Cinder, I don't suppose you'd like a sword?" Sombra asked, clearly thinking the same thing as Teth.

"Nah," Declined the she-Gryphon, (Gryphon, not Griffon. Apparently they had both on this world. Just more stuff to look into later.) "I'm more a knife girl than a sword one." That got Teth to raise an eyebrow. There had to be a story behind that.

"Well, if no one else wants it, I'll take it." Sombra said as she took the weapon in her hands. "I was needing a double-hander anyway." She commented as she looked it over herself. "I don't suppose there's a sheath for this baby?"

"Nope, sorry." Tyco uttered apologetically. "Only the sword."

"Typical." Sombra sighed. "Looks like I'm carrying this then." Teth could easily store it in his holding space. In fact, he went ahead and offered as much. "Huh, really? Thanks, but I think I'll carry it for now. Get a few test swings in." He and his armor were pretty tough. Maybe he could offer to allow her a few swings at him now, before they get back on the road?

>couldn't she just give a few swings at a tree or something? But yeah, unless the scarf is pointing to something else now I'd suggest you guys start heading back into town.
She could take a few swings at trees, but he's seen their durability compared to the Mons around here, let alone him. They weren't going to be very great training dummies.

> Let Sombra practice with the sword. No use testing it on your armor if she isn't used to the weight or swing of the sword.
True...

"Sombra, why don't you take some test swings on some trees here, get a feel for that thing." Teth suggested.

"I was planning on practicing later, but a few goes at the trees around here sounds like a good idea." Sombra uttered as she held the sword in her hands. In a flash, she had rushed passed a tree that was still standing. The thing was starting to come done, its trunk being cut down near the base. Flames danced around the cut portions of the tree, a small blaze that crackled to life the instant the cut had been made. Just before it finished crashing into the ground, Sombra flashed by again, cutting the falling portion of the tree in two.

"It's good for a single handed grip too, nicely balanced like my normal sword." The Night Dog commented before she went on to do some more conventional test swings at another tree, which fell apart with ease thanks to being attacked by a Mon with a sword.

"When she's done, we should keep heading straight for tow." Cinder commented. "We got that job to turn in and we've got to get settled in with you in the group."

"Sooo, we're going to help him out, right?" Tyco asked. "Get his stuff back, find his friends, all that jazz."

"That's the plan, yes." Glimmer nodded.

"You all don't need to do that." Teth began, only to be cut off by Cinder.

"You're tied to Sombra now, which means you're stuck with us and we're stuck with you. Which means you're part of this team. We may not be big shots yet, but we've got an agreement to help each other out, new guys included." The Gryphon uttered. Teth couldn't help a pleased smile under his helmet.

"Thank you." He stated.

"Don't thank us, adventuring with you is basically a ticket to getting more loot and Power." Cinder added gruffly. Teth just internally chuckled. New team-buddies, yeah. At least, that's what Reema would call them...

"So, after we turn in them mission and get our reward, what do you want to do first?" Glimmer asked. "I mean, you haven't really eaten anything yet, maybe we can get you some food when we get there?" They'd offered to share their food with Teth, but he refused. He didn't need to eat and only did so because he liked to, meaning they needed to reserve all of their food for themselves while out. That being said, eating when they weren't out adventuring was something he could see himself doing.

"Maybe we should stop by the item shop first, get him a cloak her something." Cinder suggested, "The busted up armor's going to start getting people to ask questions, and I'm not sure if you want to go around answering them." That was fair. Besides, while he wouldn't call himself a 'fashionista', he did see the value of dressing up the part. A new cloak sounded like a good idea.

"What he needs are weapons." Tyco uttered, "We should hit up a weapons' shop and get him something. I know the weapons' smith in town and I'm sure he can come up with something in the meantime while we look for your original gear." That didn't sound like a bad idea. The quality of the weapons here, while not necessarily lethal to things as tough as himself or the Mon, could still prove useful when fighting against Machina or Monsters. Plus, having a little bit of range for melee fighting would be helpful. He was tough, but he was sure that he'd eventually come across something that he couldn't just beat down with his fists.

>Suggest something for Teth to do.

>so you said you like to use a hammer right, what about range, what kind of weapons did you like to use at a distance? Cause I'm thinking getting you another hammer and some throwing axes/tomahawks along with a cloak and ending that little shopping spree with some food and a drink with your new team.

On the Road to Rooksvale, End/The Rookie Town, Pt. 1.
"I think I've got some ideas in mind for when we get there." Teth uttered. "For now, let's just focus on getting there in once piece."

"We haven't seen any Machina since we started heading back to town, so I think we'll be fine." Tyco commented.

"We also never saw Machina as far in as that tomb before either, and yet there they were." Cinder noted. "After we finish getting set up, we've got to make our way to the local Adventurer's Guild Hall and get a message out about that." The Gryphon noted.

"They may have already taken out Mon, or at least driven them off." Glimmer noted, touching her scarf which tightened around her neck. "I found this in the clutches of one of those things, after all." Teth had asked in the last two days if they knew much about Aetherworks and they admitted to not. They knew of the incredibly rare and powerful Aether typing, but those with that are very rare in comparison to the the rest of the world's Type composition. Glimmer had been helpful on informing him of a lot of stuff, but she didn't know a lot of the Aether typing, so he'd have to look around to find if it was the same thing as his Aetherworks or not.

"Okay, I think I'm done with practicing." Sombra stated. She flipped the sword around in one hand and stabbed it into the ground with practiced ease. If nothing else, she was capable with swords, that much was sure. "You guys ready to head on out?"

"We're ready." Cinder said with a thumbs' up. "Let's hit the road, we're making good time." And with that, the group got back on the road towards town."

---

>so you said you like to use a hammer right, what about range, what kind of weapons did you like to use at a distance? >Head to the item shop first to see what they have. No need to be attracting unnecessary attention looking through stores or deciding upon a weapon.
Four days after the events that unfolded in the tomb, the group plus one new member found themselves making their way towards the town. It was still a way's away, but already Teth was preparing himself for his first venture into a world in this town. He could make out the architectural style on their approach, even though they were still a good 30 minutes or so from arriving at the entry gates. It had an older feel to it, less 'modern' look, the buildings being made primarily of stone and/or wood. Still, they looked comfortable enough to live around, so he saw no problems wit-

"Well well well, look who it is." An unfamiliar female's voice cut through the air. Teth turned his attention to right in front of him. A group of four Mon, one a snake of some kind, one a cheerful looking female dog, and two that were two different kinds of feline of indeterminate gender.

"Uh, not this again." Grumbled Cinder.

"Coming back from a mission? Didn't think a bag of old bones like you could handle it." The snake hissed slyly before pausing as she took note of Teth. "You're new."

"He looks fun!" The dog cheerfully stated, clapping her oversized forearm gauntlets together. "Can I fight him? Hey, you, can we fight?!"

"Sombra, up for testing out our link here?" Teth asked her.

"I'm fine with it if you are." Sombra said with a nod. "Just give orders to help you improve, right?"

"Something like that." Teth nodded as he started to head towards the front of the group. "Alright, I'm up for a spar." He called out to the cream colored she-dog. A smile broke over her violet eye'd face, her red hair kept in a ponytail.

"Yay!" She cheered, clapping her oversized gauntlets together cheerfully before running on over to meet him half way between the two groups. "Before we get started, I'm Hana!" She said as she reached out a hand. Teth took the forelimb and gave it a shake, just now realizing that her forelimbs weren't actually seemingly bigger thanks to her gear. They actually were bigger. Not ludicrously huge, but her forearms and lower legs, hands and feet included, were proportionally bigger than normal. He hadn't noticed much proportion discrepancy with the Mon in his group, but it seems he was dealing with a different kind here than normal.

>hey Teth, how strong does the dog look? Being honest do you think you could take her in your weakened condition? Think this might be a good chance to see if sombra can loosen the restrictions around that collar you're stuck wearing?

How strong she was was a bit of a wild guess. Aside from her large forelimbs, she was well muscled. From what he could sense of her power, or Standing, she was probably higher up there among the Rookie ranks, around 7 or 8.

"Hello, Hana, I'm Teth." The Defender greeted. "I'm sorry for asking, but what kind of Mon are you?"

"I'm a Pound Puppy!" She happily stated, still giving the larger male a friendly handshake in her large, paw-like hand. "What are you? Also, I can't sense your Standing, so can you tell me that too? Actually, wait, don't tell me either, I want it to be a surprise when we fight!" A real fight junkie, this one. Still, polite compared to the vibes he was getting from the snake woman over there. "So, do you want the first hit, or do you want me to go first?" She asked politely. Teth looked back to Glimmer.

"Glimmer, what type's a Pound Puppy?" Teth asked.

"Normal!" Was her reply. Oh. Normal Type. Those hit much harder in terms of physical attacks compared to other Types of Mon. And Hana here's a Fighter too, given her gauntlets and combat boots. Which means that, strictly speaking, pound for pound, she could hit way harder than another Fighter of the same level of a different typing. How much harder, he wasn't sure, but he had the distinct feeling it would be closer to his level than not. Still, he had his armor and unbreakable bones, so being a good sport and letting her have the first hit wouldn't be so bad, right? Then again, he'd always been taught to go for the opening blow whenever he could. Hmmm....

And yes I know you did fight those machines as soon as you woke up but you also passed out right away after words and now you're actually rested... thinking about it now this fight would have been better after you could have gotten some new gear to test it out but eh, what can you do?

>(team) Sombra should use this fight as a way to try and see how much control she has over Teth's collar as in seeing if she can't lessen some of the restraints around him and everyone else I guess can watch the fight and see what teth can do to try and get a better idea where he'd fit in the team.
