The Hounds. (An Original Text-Adventure style Quest)

Any landmarks in the area you can use to figure out where specifically you are? Or any hazards to be aware of like wildlife. Restraints on your compatriots means getting spotted will be problematic

Aether-Trip, Pt. 3.
>well, I have next to zero idea about the place you three have found yourselves in so the most advice I can give is try and get back to the mortal world. It's not exactly safe but the sisterhood doesn't have nearly as much power there as they do here.

Asar
>Well looks like your the heavy hitter of the group seeing as you're the only one who can use there powers

Teth & Jaster
>see if you can't find a way to remove your restraints.
Asar frowned as he swore he heard a head voice talking to him sharply and clearly. He pushed it aside, but didn't throw out its good points either. He was the heavy hitter of the group now, scary as that was to consider.

Teth was checking to see if he could remove his restraints, to no avail, while Jaster was still reeling from the knowledge bomb he'd been given.

> Asar
Any landmarks in the area you can use to figure out where specifically you are? Or any hazards to be aware of like wildlife. Restraints on your compatriots means getting spotted will be problematic
Asar looked around, trying to see if there was any landmarks he could use. This was a Garden of Orual, but which one is up for debate. There shouldn't be any wildlife, just these weird plants. Still.....

> Teth
Check on Jaster. Dumping all of that on him probably took toll on his sanity.
Teth sighed as he found himself unable to remove his armor. He quickly buckled himself up and stepped towards Jaster, placing a hand over his shoulder.

"Hey there, Jast." He uttered. "You doing alright?" Going by Jaster's uncharacteristic silence, the way he was bowed over and holding himself up against a tree, and his utter stillness, no, he wasn't alright. Another sigh escaped Teth. "Listen, Jast, I know it's a lot.....I....I was hit hard too, when we were told that...." Teth paused as he considered what to say. What could he say? 'Oh, the Empire and basically all of our species and mortal parents are gone and our entire life's purpose is now reduced to dust and memories, but hey, at least we're still alive and have each other, right?' That would ring hollow, given their current predicament. So with little other choice, he reached out and just patted his friend on the back.

> Jaster
Might want to see what your capable of now before moving on. Test your capability.
Jaster didn't do anything for several solid minutes before taking a deep breath and standing back upright. With an almost robotic movement, he tested himself out, trying to see what, if any, of his abilities still worked. None manifested.

"Damn." He uttered out loud to himself. The others sighed as they heard his sole word.

"Guess we're in a boat-load of trouble." Teth uttered. "So what now?"

>What I'm thinking, is Teth's title is the Defender. I bet he's got the best armor, even if he's got an over-layer of restraining armor we want off ASAP.
>Jaster to the rear mostly because Asar's in the center where he can respond quickly to one side or the other.
>Hope is, if we run into something nasty and end up fighting I figure if Teth loses his over-layer he'll get to have fun with the under-layer and all it's abilities, which should enable him to fight properly. And if not...Well, as Defender, I figure that means he has more mundane skills of 'how to get blown up without dying' he can apply.

Asar
>Lead the group best shape of you 3 right now in case need to fight anything. Figure out what the best direction to head is.

Indeed, that did look like the only real option to do at this juncture....

Teth

Jaster
>Follow the others, lets see if can get out of this place.
Well, that was far from the worst idea they had to go with.

"Alright, I'll walk up front, Asar in the middle, Jaster in the back. I'll take lead and try to find us somewhere.....well, can't garuntee safety. But we don't have a lot of options and moving forward is the only real way we have of finding a way back out of this place." Teth sighed.

"Looks like that's the plan then." Jaster sighed. "We keep going until we find.....anything that can help? Yeah, anything that cant help."

"If we're all in agreement." Asar interjected, "I say we move out." With that, the trio began their jounrey deeper into the Gardens, all ready as they could be for whatever awaited them.....

---

The journey through the Garden had been a mostly uneventful one. No animals were encountered, as expected, the plants were weird but left them alone, and they only encountered spacial and gravitic disturbences a grand total of 3 times in the 12 hours of walking they had been on.

Still, despite how calm everything was, the sense of unease never fully left, due to the enemies out there in the Aether searching for them. Eventually, the trio found themselves at a crossroads. One road went higher up, to a mountain or hill like section topped by a pillar of some kind, a marker. Another road went into what seemed to be a clearing, one devoid of any form of life and open to the elements. The third was what seemed to be alead into the underbrush, past brambles into a smokey, hazy area deep in the dark.

>probably best to head down the path that gives the team the most cover so I say underbrush... unless that takes you away from the exit.
'Exit'. Ha! As if there was an exit to this place! At least, something a Mortal would comprehend as an 'exit'.

Team
>look around the area. See if can figure out specifically where you are by road signs or landmarks. Also keep out for any activity on the roads.

Asar
>Any advice on what route to take?

Teth
>Any signs of your group being tracked? No encounters thus far but were tracked before being captured in first place.. And have reached area that is clearly much more traveled..

Jaster
>any areas look like could be good shelter or hideaway? If spotted would likely call in reinforcements..
The team scoured the area for anything, any signs or symbols or anything that could tell them where they were or what lay before them down these paths. Alas, there was nothing of the sort.

"Alright," Asar stated, "We've got some options here. Options are good, options are nice, options yes yes." He paused to smack himself over the head to get it back on straight. "....Right, so. Up high leaves us exposed, clearing is also a good place to get ambushed, and underbrush is a mess of trouble....but underbrush is most likely to get us away from those hunting for us, even if we're going to be in a weird place."

"All in favor of the underbrush, say aye." Teth stated before everyone promptly said 'aye'. "Motion passed." He stated before looking around at his environment. There was no encounters so far, and no apparant proof of them being tracked, but this meant nothing. The enemy was devious and patient. Who knows where they were or what they were planning. Regardless of if they were tracked or not, the Underbrush was a surefire way to lose them.....he hoped. Given the armor he and Jaster had, there was little doubt they were being monitored or tracked that way.

For Jaster, he was loathe to go into the underbrush, but there was little other choice as he came to the exact same conclusions as Teth. "Alright." He said, "Let's do this. Everyone jump down the hole in one go, don't give the bad guys time to corner us while we're alone. Everyone ready?"

"Ready as we can be." Teth said. He reached out and patted Asar on the back. "You ready bud?"

"Go, now." He managed to blurt out, his mental state still as mess as before, even if he could focus on complex objectives. As one, the trio of friends leapt down to slide into the underbrush. Breaking through the canopy of roots and vines, the trio soon found themselves swathed in inky smoke and darkness before, after several more seconds of travel time, they found themselves being ejected into the depths.

"Well, this is.....A thing." Teth said to himself as the trio stood up and looked around themselves. The 'underbrush' was underground, a large and expansive cave with the roots of the forest above them running along the ceiling. Strange underground plants with glowing heads provided some form of illumination, while smokey purplish fluid vaguely resembling water idly flowed around them in what passed for rivers. The cave went in further forward, though where it led to was another question entirely.

(Hey guys, don't think I need to tell you that the last proper update has been a while. I feel it only right to give you all an update on what's going on IRL and apologize. Been busy with real life stuff, helping out with work, the wedding of a family friend, ect. This weekend alone one of my family members is graduating and so we're going to be busy with them. I hope you all understand the reasons for the delays, and I hope you'll be ready to hop back in once updates start coming in.

One final thing, I've started up working on returning to college, so while I can't say what my schedule at that point will look like, I can confirm that current way of doing things on the weekends will continue. Hope that's cleared some things up!)

(Well.....The original plan got shot in the foot. No real excuse, just been busy on weekends to hang out with family and then needing some time to myself to relax whenever work comes up on weekdays, plus gearing up for uni in the Fall. I extend an apology to my players for these unfortunate delay. I've had to extend a question to other players on two of my other quests if they wish to continue them at a later time where I can sit down and do most of my quests properly or if I should lay those particular quests to rest.

For this quest in particular, plus a selection of others, I instead come forward and ask you guys for continued patience. The old schedule won't be back for a long while yet, so while it will return, it'll be a long way away. That said, I'm going to be continuing this quest on a temporary format of updating once a week, though I can't say consistently due to RL stuff potentially getting in the way. If you wish to leave, I understand completely and thank you profusely for the time you've given me and my quest, but if you can bare with me a little longer, I'll try to keep updates coming more than the complete drought it's been the past few months.

Does that sound good to you guys?)

I mean, I could always use more time to theoretically re-read this quest or try and work my way through the impressive backlog of quests you've ran here to really get a feel for this setting (Boldly assuming you've been setting all your works in the same setting.)

(You are correct, they're all in the same setting. However, they're spread out across different points in the timeline, as well as occasionally different versions of the timeline, mixed in with some plain old outdated lore that has been retconned or updated over time.)

Aether-Trip, Pt. 5.
Team
>Identify any potential dangers around the place. Any wildlife that would nest down here? otherwise.. may as well follow the cave.
"Look around." Teth uttered, taking control to give orders. "See if there's anything that could possibly be a threat or trouble somehow." The trio of friends got to searching, staying close enough to react in the event that something turned up and tried to pull something. Nothing did, for as they searched the cavern they found nothing that could remotely be considered a threat. The plants did little other than shake from the tremors of their foot falls near them, while no form of animal life was detected.

Down here, they were alone save for each other.

Asar
>Anything recognize down here? If need to rest, said it yourself this place would slow down any hunters.
Asar's time in the Aether proper, much less in Orual's Gardens, had always been minimal, even back at the height of the Empire. That said, he recognized the plants as forms of vegetation used to feed the livestock creatures created by Orual aeons ago. The roots belonged to trees up top that were also used for similar purpose but for larger creatures.

Overall, this was a safe place, and a moment of rest could be afforded.....but would they rest?

"Stay here, rest up?" Asar asked his friends. They considered it for a moment before replying in near unison.

"Only a few minutes." Teth and Jaster both chuckled before Teth spoke up fiirst. "Just long enough to catch our breath, then we leave and continue to try and find a way out of these armors, then out of the Aether." A solid enough plan that Asar wasn't going to argue with.

Teth
>Take the lead thus through here, see if can find anything to illuminate any of the dark areas of the cave.
After several moments of silence, the gang finally continued. Teth took point, keeping a watchful eye for anything illuminating the inner depths of the dark cave. With nothing lighting up certain areas, he didn't trust their situation enough to risk going anywhere near those places as he lead the group down the only pathway. Thankfully, small glowing fungi releasing embers of dying starlight lined the walls, giving the tunnel exit enough light that he didn't have to worry about a surprise attack or ambush from anything.

>Keep to the middle of the group as they move through, call out anything.. strange for this place if you see it.
Jaster, meanwhile, kept to the middle and kept his eyes out for anything strange....which wasa bit redundant given that to him, everything about the Aether was strange. To think this was part of his heritage was.....disconcerting. Still, he pushed back his many, many feelings in favor of focusing on the moment until they got to true safety.

The trio walked down the hall in silence, Asar keeping watch in the back in case anything snuck up to attack them. Eventually, the friends made it to another cross roads. The left most entrence stayed level with them and seemed to go elsewhere in thsi system, while the right most entrance seemed to head back to the surface. The centermost went further down, and seemed to spew forth embers of light from a currently unseen source.

(Apologies for the super long delay guys. No real excuses, just kept pushing back the updates until now. I can only offer my sincerest apologies for the stupidly long delay.)

>At a crossroads, any thoughts for which way to head from each of the team members? If not.. same level may be best, surface may mean exposed to aerial patrols.
>Asar, anything can do to potential misdirect any trackers in this crossroads? Give more breathing ro om if they have the wrong idea where you go
>Teth, check for any signs of tracks or other signs of traffic in the various directions
>Jaster, keep watch of rear in case anything tries sneaking up.

Aether-Trip, Pt. 6.
>At a crossroads, any thoughts for which way to head from each of the team members? If not.. same level may be best, surface may mean exposed to aerial patrols.
With only 3 real options, there weren't a lot to choose from, and even then, only 2 were good options as the third ran the risk of leaving them exposed to enemy detection. As such, they'd have to think carefully of where to tread.

"I say we stay on the level and go left." Jaster piped up. The other two Hounds looked at their friend, who just nodded confidently. "I'm not joking. We stay on the level and see where else in this island we can go to. I don't trust going further down."

"Well, it's certainly not the worst option we have right now." Teth admitted. "I'll second that vote." The duo then looked to Asar, who nodded in turn. Left it was then.

>Asar, anything can do to potential misdirect any trackers in this crossroads? Give more breathing ro om if they have the wrong idea where you go
He had some options for misdirection, yes, though what to do. With so few options, it was likely whatever he did that worked would just result in the enemy splitting up to cover all grounds. Still, in that event, it meant less for them to deal with overall when they finally did catch up. With that in mind, Asar got to work weaving a little spell to cause some misdirection.

>Teth, check for any signs of tracks or other signs of traffic in the various directions
As Asar did his magic, Teth treid to see any signs that anything had come by in these various directions before them. After a thorough check, he was slightly relieved to see that no, nothing had passed by here before them. That was good to know at least.

>Jaster, keep watch of rear in case anything tries sneaking up.
As the others got to work, Jaster kept watch of the rear, to make sure nothing came up from behind them. Nothing seemed to be coming yet, which was a good sign, but one could never be too cautious.

Eventually, however, Asar finished forging his spell and he nodded to the others.

"Let's go." He curtly stated, and with that the trio went down the left path. Asar let his spell go, and with it, some whispy mystical threads flew behind the trio, carving foot paths that hadn't been there before to make it look like they could have gone in any direction. With that done, that left traveling down the left path, fruther into the floating isle in the Aether, going who knows where....

---

After a dozen or so minutes of walking, the trio finally wound up somewhre new. The chamber was a wide open one, pools of mist surrounding the floor of the room as above, glowing roots and fungi illuminated it. A small but humble totem dedicated to one of the Aether Beings was in the center of the room, and there seemed to be a closd door way right behind it on the other side of the chamber.

"Well lads, looks like we've found an old translocation site." Jaster uttered.

"Wonder where we can go from here." Teth pondered out loud. This pondering, however, was stopped by a whisp like stream of magic floating around Asar, shimmering red.

"Enemies coming down our path." He uttered, a frown in his voice.

>Suggest something for the Team to do.
>Suggest something for Asar to say/do.
>Suggest something for Teth to say/do.

>With enemies coming the options are either fight or keep moving.. Any good positions in the room to potentially ambush from?
>Asar, test the door to next area.. See if can move through it or its barricaded.
>Teth, keep watch down the path. See if can spot what's coming and how many they are.
>Jaster, can you identify the Being the statue represents?

Aether-Trip, Pt. 7.
>With enemies coming the options are either fight or keep moving.. Any good positions in the room to potentially ambush from?
Teth looked around, trying to see if there were any decent ambush spots in a place like this. Barring supernatural darkness, the enemy Shades would be able to spot him and his friends easily, and even that wasn't a garuntee if they had been trained in the Aetherworks skill of Dread Eye. That meant that cover was what mattered here.

Aside from the totem in the center and the door in the back, there were a handful of waiste high moss covered stone fragments littering the ground. Whether they'd be of any use as camoflage was still up for debate, but they could at least act as cover for when fighting broke out.

"To the stones, gentlemen." He ordered, which his friends immediatly took the meaning of and wasted no time in getting into positions.

>Asar, test the door to next area.. See if can move through it or its barricaded.
While the other two grabbed cover, Asar went to the back of the room to study the door. He focused his frazzled mind to the best he could manage it in order to see about getting the door working.

Up close, it was less of a 'door' and more of a 'door-way'. A mystical portal system, though this instance was currently shut. It would take a bit to reactivate it, and there would be no telling where it would end up. Still, anywhere was better than being stuck down here waiting to be captured, so he got to work trying to reactivate the stone doorway to find a place for them to get the hell out of this place.

>Teth, keep watch down the path. See if can spot what's coming and how many they are.
Teth was many things. The Defender. The Pugilist. Ect. But as he kept his eyes peeled down the path, one thing he wasn't, and even if he was his current armor was preventing him from using, was 'The Far-Sighted'. Even without factoring in the darkness his eyes could cut through, the pathway in here was long enough that he couldn't make out any figures coming down it just yet.

>Jaster, can you identify the Being the statue represents?
Jaster wasn't exactly a member of the Aether Cult, in fact he wasn't period. That said, he could still make out the identity of the Aether Being the statue represented: Lethe, the Devouring One. Ominous, to say the least.

[]Focus on staying hidden until Asar got the door open.
[]Get ready for a fight to hold them off!

[X]Try and see if Teth and Jaster's combined strength could bring down the doorway into this place, buy everyone some time.
"Jaster, with me!" Teth stated. "We're bringing the entry way down by brute force, now!" Jaster didn't even waste time questioning the decision: With the choices being move and try to do something to hold the enemy off a while longer and hiding pathetically to be quickly discovered, he knew what he would choose. As the pair collectively slammed their strength to begin bringing down the dirt and debris of the entry-door way of this place, Asar took that as his cue to get the mystical doorway working.

"Buy me a minute!" He shouted to his friends. "Just a minute!" With that shout given, the pair threw themselves even harder at their work, causing the doorway into the room to collapse, just in time to spare them from several shots of the enemy Shade's Ghostfire weapons' blasts from striking from the darkness and hitting the falling debris. As the entryway collapsed, Teth motioned to Jaster with hand-signals the Hounds had developed long, long ago, which his old friend nodded in understanding to his meaning and took his place in waiting on both sides of the collapsed entrance.

The debris had bought them little more than a few precious seconds, as not a moment later did it explode outwards, filling the room with vaporized rock and burning ash as the first of the enemy Shades tossed what was undoutedbly a grenade into the room.

Aether-Trip, Pt. 9.
>Team prep and duck and cover from the grenade, its probably an opener before they close the distance and start flooding into the room.
With Asar the furthest away from the fighting and the only one completely clear of the grenade-a roiling ball of barely contained and quickly destabalizing solar plasma-radius, Teth and Jaster both got into cover as fast as they could, leaping out of the way just in time for the plasma ball to explode violently. The becoming-familiar sound of the hostile Shade's armored boots approaching closer through the smoke filled their hearing.

>Get the door open Asar while the others buy you time.
Asar grit his teeth. Working on this door was a great deal of effort, claiming his attention away from what was happening around him. He'd love nothing more than to stop what he was doing right away and help his friends beat back the hostile Shades coming for them, but he had his assigned duties first and foremost, and by God, he was going to get it done!

Slowly but surely, the doorway was responding to his commands, sections coming loose, floating in the air before circling around one another as they entered a complex runic code for a destination. Where, he didn't know, but as long as it was away from where they currently were to buy them some time, he'd take anywhere!

>Target any leaders of the Shades you can first Teth, kill them and help break their cohesion.
As the largest and physically strongest of his team, Teth narrowed his eyes at the first Squad Sergeant, or at least that was what he classified the Officers in more ornate sealed up war suits, and propelled himself towards them as they cleared through the smoke. They got several shots off of their weapon, some kind of Ghost-Fire focusing device, that phased through his restraint-armor (or perhaps it would be more accurate to say the restraint-armor let them phase through it) and slammed directly into his true armor beneath that. It was a testament to the firepower of the device that his own ancient battlearmor, weakened as it was, was scorched and cracked where hit.

Not one to be out done, Teth grabbed ahold of the Sergeant's gun and wrestled him for it, managing to overcome the power difference throught a mixture of raw skill and sheer brute strength on his part, slamming the body of the weapon against its owners helmet hard enough to dent the metal of his closed off helm, and did it enough times to actually stun him for a moment. Wrestling the gun out of his arms, Teth bludgeoned the enemy Shade, finding himself both amazed and utterly disturbed by the fact that each of his strikes were actually breaking his enemy's bones. They had the shape of Oros-Shades, but going by their lack of overpowering strength even compared to his own restrained form and the fact their bones were breakable, Teth deduced these Shades were from a different stock than those like himself. The implications were too much to focus on at that moment, he had enemies to fight off first.

>Support Teth by keeping any regular soldiers off him Jaster, divide their attention to give an opening.
Jaster wasn't exactly the powerhouse of the Hounds, but if there was one thing the Rocket Knight had mastered in his millenia of combat experience, it was technique. While Teth used his size, strength, and experienced sharpened skill to take down an enemy Officer, Jaster kept the chaff off him with a potent mixture of agility, speed, and acrobatic hand to hand maneuvers. One poor sod wound up getting tossed head over heel into his fellow solider, while another wound up getting knocked to his back by Jaster's combat techniques. Still, for every one he knocked down, more were entering the room, and even as the Officer Teth had slain was eroding to floating ash and spectral energy to reform somewhere safer, more Troopers and the Officers leading them were pushing their way in.

Asar had asked for a minute, and they were down to only 30 seconds left of said minute. Any longer, and Jaster feared for their ever diminishing odds.

Teth grit his teeth as he found that trying to fire the gun was to no avail. So, he decided to use it as a bludgeon instead. With his mighty strength and the impeccably solid connstruction of the weapon, he was able to use it as both club and shield, using it to absorb incoming fire before bashing any enemy Shade that was too close for comfort. Adaptible as always, the hostiel Shades did their best to maneuver around him and stay back, but Jaster was there to help out. Grabbing a Shade outright, Jaster hefted the ton of armored Mortal/Aetherling Hybrid and began to use the soldier like a shield against his fellows weapons, shielding Teth from their attempts at concentrated fire.

Immortal in ever sense of the word, the Shades didn't bother trying to shoot around their ally and instead tried to drill through him to get at the enemy: If he 'perished', he'd just reform elsewhere in the Aether good as new, after all. Unfortunately, the quality of their armor proved to be a bad thing in this situation, as they couldn't easily shoot through and dematerialize their friend to get at their real targets. For his part, the Shade in Jaster's grip tried to unsheath a blade to get at Jaster, but he simply kept hitting the Shade's head with his fellow's bodies to knock the wind out of him.

As Teth and Jaster fought valiantly, Asar kept up his work on the door. The runes and mechanisms shifted continiously until, finally, they clicked. The empty doorway crackled with life, as a shadowy smoke filled its entryway until a jolt of lightning burned it away, revealing the hazy, distorted opening of an Aetheric Door.

"Open!" Asar called out to his friends. "I got it open!" With a pair of titanic throws, Teth and Jaster launched their impromptu weapons at their enemies before turning round and sprinting towards the door, making it too in a flash. Before he himself went through, Asar left a pair of plasma orbs on either side of the door, and no sooner was he throught the gate onto the other side, they detonated, destroying the door way and buying them a great deal of time.

"That was close." Teth huffed as he rolled his shoulder, enemy fire that had gone through Jaster's defenses having phased through his jail-plate and passed his deactivated plate into his flesh.

"Now where are we?" Jaster asked as he looked around. This place was unfamiliar to them, tall bamboo like shoots rising up in a darkened forest, the Aether's whispy layers high above in the sky. The path led two ways. Behind them led towards what seemed to be the edge of the landmass they were on. In front led towards a building at the top of a hill, resembling a pagoda roofed house.

"Watched." Asar rumbled. The others got his meaning: They were being watched. Given they weren't being attacked immediatly, however, it was safe to assume that it likely wasn't the Dark Sisterhood watching them.
