The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

As for Legend of Zelda fics, I'm desperately searching for a good Twilight Princess fic. Link and Midna shipping is optimal, but I'll take solid friendshiping, and prospects aren't great so far. I've only got one that looks promising, but it's not done and is a Breath of the Wild crossover, somehow.
The majority of good LoZ stories now are all to common based off the Linked Universe with all the Heroes travelling together or a BotW story yea.

I don't have anything that qualifies as a best ever Twilight Princess, but I do have some decent to good recommendations, or at least I thought I did.

Looking through my list not a single one has Midna in a major role, Midna is the commonly accepted love interest for the Linked Universe, but looking at my own recommendations, three of them are romances/tragedies with Link/Zelda, one of them is Link using the Triforce for family, and the last is a crossover which is the closest to a proper adventure story, but Link isn't the primary protagonist.

If you want links I can provide them/DM you them, but honestly not quite sure if you'd want to see them.

If none are up to snuff for the thread, then send me a Link.

I want to mention Fate T. Harlaown and the Case of the Murderous Murder, by Moczo. It's a Nanoha story taking place during the Strikers period. The premise is simple: an affiliated world has had a major politician murdered, and the local police aren't up to cracking the case. So the TSAB deploys Enforcer Harlaown, her assistant Teana Lanster, and recent graduate Susanoo, one of the author's OC's from their previous story Infinity. (I've suggested that one for this thread too, but it ultimately didn't make the cut. You do not need to have read Infinity to enjoy this one, thankfully.)

Naturally, it quickly turns out that the case is more complicated than it seems, and all of the suspects are a bunch of wierdos none of whom are entirely honest with the investigators. It ends up as a comedy which does not overstay its welcome, and which I find to be hilarious and well worth reading. No big fight scenes in this one, but that does not detract from its appeal IMO.

I'm gonna throw in Broken Demons and Angels, a Halo/Pokémon crossover story. It follows a Spartan who gets stranded on the Pokemon world and his continuing journey to get back to the UNSC, along with making a pokémon team mostly by accident. It's got tons of action, but also a lot slower, more personal scenes, with a really strong emotional core throughout. The connection between the Spartan and his pokémon is genuinely really sweet, with both sides helping each other become better people with a great payoff.

There is a major caveat in that I would describe it much more as a Halo story with pokémon than a Pokémon story with a Spartan. It's way more violent than any Pokémon media, honestly more than the Halo games, but if you vibe with that then I would say it's more than worth a look.

Does anyone have recs to fill in the fandom gaps in the list? Not seeing anything for a number of pretty big fandoms. One Piece, Inuyasha, Hellsing, Kingdom Hearts, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Legend of Zelda strike me as the most obvious omissions.

Anyone know any completed fics in those fandoms to fit the bill?
I think the problem with those is that many of the fanfics I can think of that are good and might warrant mention on this list aren't complete yet. And the few I've read that are complete aren't typically at the level of awesomeness this list expects.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head that I'm certain is complete, was well written and an excellent read would probably be the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild fanfic "Again" by Drich. I don't think that one's been recommended to this list yet? It's hard to tell because the name of it is a common word so I wasn't able to confirm via searching the thread.

Again (Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild)

Link wakes up. Journeys across the world. Defeats Calamity.

Link wakes up.

Again. And Again. And Again.
The main premise is that Link is undergoing a Groundhog Day loop that encompasses the events of the BotW game and then three days after. Being Link, he keeps doing his best to defeat Calamity over and over again while trying different ways to escape the time-loop so that he can finally have his well-earned rest with Hyrule at peace the way it's supposed to be.

I do not know how you can recommend it when the writing itself is of such poor quality. Is the spartan protagonist supposed to feel like he is suffering from brain damage? Did the author ever encounter a dictionary? Words like Smite and smitten are mixed up with each other, attitude and altitude, etc.

I remember Again all to well, and it absolutely remains one of the better Legend of Zelda stories, that I both enjoyed reading and would recommend reading for any big BotW fans.

That being said I can't really recommend it for one of the best ever stories, because it fundamentally fails as a timeloop story, as there are zero real stakes throughout the real story.

When using a timeloop scenario there are two main types of stories you want to write, one following the style of Groundhog Day itself which is primarily about character development and cares little for the "why" your in the timeloop, or a much more heavily mystery style like Mother of Learning.

Link grows heavily in power throughout the story, but it isn't really used in anything except to get him out of the timeloop, due to starting out being one of the most powerful characters in the series to begin with already having managed defeating Ganon before this even started, and his character changes relatively little from the Link we start out with.

From a mystery perspective, similarly there's very little weight given throughout the mystery, because rarely do we ever feel like failing to solve the mystery will actively harm anything in the short run, all it means is Link will be in the loop longer.

Going back to stories that are primarily mystery Time loops, there is MoL and Re Zero.

MoL uses the fact that he could get kicked out of the time loop, the fact that he's massively over his head by being a mere student, and weight by having us solve mysteries which effect the outcome of the story in meaningful ways. In addition once again Zorian the protagonist is a massively different person at the end of the story then he is at the beginning, in addition to just being more powerful.

Re Zero has a series of time loops, and has it revolve around figuring out the mysteries together with the protagonist and having it meaningful impact the characters inside the story, along with changing himself.

In conclusion while I do still enjoy Again, I'd give it a derec for Best stories I've ever read.

Here's a recommendation I'd posted yesterday for CV12Hornet's thread:
I'd definitely consider QAB one of the best. I think that the first part is more complete and satisfying than the second? Even though there's still a lot of stuff unresolved, as is inevitable, I really love the arc and structure of the first part. The second pulls in more things happening at once, which is really fun and good, but less neat. Both parts are still great. I definitely recommend QAB.

I would call it the best epistolary fiction I've read, but the back of my mind is insisting that there's some other story? Even then it's definitely the second best.

The "Ill Met By Starlight" Ranma fic has its link broken

I will support the "Again" by Drich recommendation tho

I'd have to say Terror Belli, Decus Pacis. It is a masterpiece. Although it's a GATE fanfic(which the bar is down in hell), it only takes minimal from the original Gate and makes it so much better. Instead of the bs insane nationalistic propaganda the original author made, the author of this basically rewritten it. Instead of the modern day, the story begins in the napoleon times, where the French army retreated into the Gate. Then they went about trying to return to the glorious emperor. It is brilliant. The characters have depth, and it isn't a complete curbstomp. The story is completed and balanced very well.

Alright, I've got a batch of recommendations to share:

First, a pair of seconding recs from previous entries in the thread:

In the Language of Flowers

Harry Potter AU where Petunia has magic instead of Lily. Genuinely one of the best things I've read to the point I've reread multiple times and several sections still manage to make me tear up.

Or the Island of Fire series about colony building in the world of Temeraire by a bunch of stranded Triwizard tournament spectators and contestants with dragons on a desert island.

If you like good writing with world building you will like esama's stuff. Unless you can't handle slash. Then you're SOL.

I didn't realize that I hadn't seconded In The Language of Flowers yet, and I got reminded of the Island of Fire when epistolary stories were mentioned here in connection with QAB.

And now for new recommendations.

A Small Gesture Of Great Impact, by ekrolo2

A For Want Of A Nail Star Wars Revenge Of The Sith!AU that starts with honest communication, which is something I always enjoy seeing. Anakin is able to confess his relationship to Padme to Obi-Wan right before the rescue mission to recover Chancellor Palpatine, and everything changes from there. This isn't a perfect world fix fic, there are some pretty major character deaths in it, but the ending is definitely far brighter than canon.

area cryptid upset no one bothered to inform him of his tragic backstory, by crimsonseekers

A Post-Kamino, Post-Shie Hassaikai MHA fic that leans heavily into the 'chaotic gremlin' viewpoint of the League of Villains that was common before the whole Meta Liberation Arc and everything. The concept of the story is that Dabi, aka Todoroki Touya, doesn't actually know who he is, and has in fact spent years trying to piece that information together. The rest of the League of Villains gets in on helping him with that, which spirals into the events of the story. One of the tags is 'Crack Treated Seriously', which fits it extremely well. It is a hilarious story, along with the various follow fics, and I return to it often for a laugh.

Four Things that Wren't Adequately Covered in Mulan's R.A. Training, by NaomiK

A fairly quick one-shot that nonetheless does an excellent job of laying out a 'Disney Princess Real World AU', one that I would honestly love to see more of, and get to see more character introduced [Elsa and Anna coming in having been separated by their parents, with Elsa locked away behind their parent's high expectations for her / Moana having to deal with her dad being very unwilling to let her come to school and her grandmother having helped her apply / Raya being a rebel that causes a lot of headaches for Mulan by going off and drinking or otherwise being disruptive and contrary / Jane being one of the professors at the school who seems very uptight, but is rather wild when she is off-duty and letting her hair down, etc.]

Mama Bear, by ArcticVulpix

What is Alma Madrigal just wasn't the absolute worst? That is this story summed up. Alma puts her family first, rather than raising them to 'serve' the village, and everyone is 100% happier because of it. There is still conflict, generally just from lazy and greedy villagers, but it all still works out.

Pity of the World, by appending_fic

This is a big Pokemon AU, which mashes aspects of the games, manga, movies, and more into the anime timeline, centered on the idea of Ash ending up travelling with Jessie, James, and Meowth, rather than Misty and Brock. This isn't him joining Team Rocket, as they aren't part of the Team in this, but they are still thieves, just more benevolent ones focused on rescuing Pokemon from bad trainers. Anyway, like I said, this story is a very complex AU, diving into a lot of very interesting worldbuilding. There are some aspects that drag a bit (I dislike some of the characterization choices for Misty and Goh), but overall, the story is very interesting and the world one I've revisited a few times since the story finished.

I really have to de-rec this. It's a fix-fic, sure, but it's one that ignore the core of Alma's character, the reason why she did what she did- that she was a terrified, traumatized mother who reached out and grabbed every measure of security she could, while also being forced into a leadership role she was never prepared for and never wanted. Handwaving all of that away in favor of "she's just better" goes against the whole point of the story and Alma's character, so I can't recommend it. There's ways to make the world of Encanto happier and brighter, but... this isn't it.

Absolutely seconding, it's so good. The author puts in some serious legwork to translate everyone's circumstances into a modern college setting.

That's... a decent critique of my flippant midnight review of the story, but Alma in the story is still a terrified and traumatized mother, she is just processing it differently than she does in canon. She is less of a village leader, due to her reaction to many of the other villagers being avoidance rather than appeasement, and functions as more of a land owner, due to the ability of banishment.

When I Win the World Ends by Bavitz

Right below Pokemon on the main page of this thread is Puella Magi Madoka Magica, with two fics; one being Fargo, by Bavitz. I've previously recced Chicago, the sequel to Fargo, and now I'd like to offer up When I Win, a Pokemon fanfiction about psychic powers, father issues, and evolution (to name a few) amid an ongoing Pokemon League tournament story.

Now that it's finished, I'll toss a rec in the direction of Rob Rimsill's A Poisoned Chalice, a Fate/Zero AU where there's no catalyst system and every summoning is determined by compatibility. As a result, every character involved (...except Zouken; some cases are just hopeless) gets some much-needed positive character development, some of them taking arcs that would hardly be imaginable in canon but make perfect sense in context.

It's not a fix-fic, mind — the war gets just as bloody as canon — but it's a lot more entertaining and much less unpleasant to watch events unfold compared to the original.

Having gone through the first chapter, I definitely have some lore gripes*, but at least one of those is the fic's designated unicorn, and none of them are on the Fate Fic Cliché Bingo yet, so I'm at least willing to continue on until I can give a proper rec or derec.
Edit: I say that and it promptly gets characterization off on a Servant(though to be fair the bit that makes it most jarring wasn't out yet at the time of publication)

*The Einzbern's nature being something relevant to the first chapter's scene for one.

Ah? I admit I have no interest in playing Grand Order, so all the Servants were effectively OCs to me, heh.
The fic predates it by a couple of months(hence my mention of the most jarring bit having an excuse), but Berserker's non-Servant self really doesn't take it well when she accidentally mortally wounds Nursery Rhyme in a FGO chapter.
