The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

There is nothing divisive about the politics. It's just not that well argued.
I believe he's just talking about the thing in this thread where a fic that has a bunch of recs and derecs doesn't get added due to obviously being quite contentious.

Like... well, I don't want to bring up examples that would actually start an argument, but for example, like Embers, the AtLA fic by Vathara.

There's always the possibility of just having a "divisive fics" section in the main post, granted. Like past the "hey these fics got tons of recs" you've got "hey these fics got tons of recs AND derecs, so it might be your taste as best damn fics, it might not".

Actually, one of the best forum fanfic recommendation lists I ever remember seeing was back on Beasts Lair years and years ago, where every fic recommended had a listing attached that linked to every individual rec and derec in the thread, so potential readers could see the arguements as to whether or not a fic was worth reading if they wanted to. It also made some fics stand out more than others, because if you saw a recommendation that had a dozen or more recommendations attached, that usually told you "hey LOTS of people think this story is good". Admittedly though, this would be a LOT more work for Phearo to manage so I'm totally fine with what we currently have, not to mention it was probably easier to get large amounts of recs/derecs on Beasts Lair since it's primarily a single fandom for Type Moon works, rather than a conglomerate thread for everything from Worm to Calvin and Hobbes.

I'm not sure I'd even agree that it's arguing anything. Not in practice.

Putting aside the author's note at the end (which ultimately just admits that the writer failed to do all the things they meant to do) you have a story that doesn't really commit to a political position. It presents some extremely political characters but none of them really get the narrative's support in the end.

Taylor gets crippled and beaten and her plan ultimately does fuck all for anyone. Aisha just gets caught in the current and dragged along. Feldman gets everything he wanted but finds no satisfaction in it. Alex is left as empty at the end as she was at the start.

None of them get what they want and the narrative ultimately only truly rewards Annette, making the only message in the actual story an incredibly milquetoast 'violence is bad, help people instead'.

It's not exactly waving the flag, whatever was going through the writer's mind when they wrote it.

Sure Taylor herself is extremely political, but characters =/= story. Plus it strikes me as entirely true to her actual character rather than the flanderised version that is so widespread in the Worm fandom. It gets forgotten among all the various things fanon ignores about her, but some of her most treasured memories were of getting her friends together and terrorising rich people. Her views on cape politics map pretty closely onto the equivalents presented in this story. She's a violent ruthless hypocritical criminal and this fic struck me as doing a perfect job at translating her into the real world or something roughly akin to it.

Ultimately it's a solid Jumper-esque story about someone getting superpowers in a (mostly) normal world.

Taylor wins, though? At the end of the story she controls like 7 trillion + dollars in untraceable offshore money and plans to use it to fix the world. That was her plan all along, and killing the billionaires at Haven removed anyone who would know how to get the money back.

There are a lot of law enforcement agencies who would be very curious as to where that 7 trillion is going, and saying that any money is untraceable is... dubious

Reincarnation: May Come with Teething Problems (Exalted) Novel - Fantasy
Appears as a straight up power fantasy of time travel, but very well made. No prior knowledge required.

Actions motivations and events are consistent, anyone can die and does so regardless of how inconvenient it is to the protagonist and punching above the weight class soon finds its limits.
Also, hiding their power has cost the protagonist trust from their closest allies, including her mother and has made her serious enemies which makes her too hot politically to go home and leads to a de facto exile.
It serves as a great introduction to exalted basics and the realm in particular. I have been trying to get into the fandom for some time and this fic managed to get my foot in by explaining the basics such that I can build up on my own.

What are you talking about, it was complete a month ago?

Also that hostile tone is way overboard.

Sorry, the threadmarks are listed incomplete in the linked thread. Under "index progress" in the threadmarks section. Also you've been here as for long enough to get why I might be getting a bit tired of repeating that fact.

If I am truly wrong, then sorry for snapping.

EDIT: missed the a/n at the bottom of the last post. initial post deleted. Sorry again.

So I was going to recommend this a long time ago, but I think put it off when an earlier "the MC reads like she's on drugs" mental health issue-focused concept was, initially, poorly received. At least, I can't find any reference to anyone or myself having recommended it.

I figure I'll give it a chance.

(Firefly)
Testing by Aria
There is no getting better. There is only getting different.

This is my favourite Firefly fic. It is a 2.5k River POV, stream of consciousness. A character piece following her as she goes about a day aboard Serenity. If you've seen Firefly you probably have expectations, like the leaves and the branch in the cargo bay. It's not quite that dramatic, but it is.... River being River-like. It's great and happy and sad and there's layers and it's really short. Attempting to describe it would detract from it. Give it a shot!

Here's are some interesting ones I found all about Re:Zero

Got some good fanfictions to drop on ya

One is about if Subaru was unable to stop Petelgeuces possession and now must struggle to retain control of his body and one is an oddly wholesome but violent story from the Pride IF with Archbishop of pride Subaru throwing a birthday party for his favorite little Maw Beast taming assassin

And Boys night out is a really well written and fluffy 2 chapter story

We got two complete short ones and one that updates regularly
So I shall be recommending the two short ones and keep an eye on the possession story since I'm very interested and hooked so far.

I'm recommending A Peaceful Afterlife by WriteAnon (TV Tropes page here). It's a Hazbin Hotel and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure crossover fusion with Yoshikage Kira as the protagonist. There obviously isn't a lot of existing info on canon Hazbin so WriteAnon created an original plot using characters from the JJBA side of the story, and I think it was done very well.

The characters were written entertainingly, only acting different from their canon portrayals with good reason, such as Kira being drunk. But it was the interactions that they had with each other which really made this excellent! From Angel and Kira bonding over DOOM and Charlie's earnest efforts to redeem them both, to Husk going head to head with D'arby the Gambler in a game of cards and Vaggie slowly getting over her dislike of our serial killer protagonist, there are plenty of moments that made this thoroughly enjoyable and brought a smile to my face.

It's just under 100k words but it has an also complete story in the same continuity involving La Squadra from Part 5 of JoJo, as well as a semi-sequel about Doppio. Though I haven't read either one yet.

A warning though, as appropriate for Hazbin Hotel's world being hell, there are several mentions of drugs, alcohol, sex, torture, cannibalism and other sorts of unpleasantness. If you can't stand that kind of thing you might want to pass this by.

Edit: I just finished reading Helluva Job, the other complete story I mentioned. It was a ton of fun! Though it followed a classic heist themed storyline and the characters were slightly less compelling than in A Peaceful Afterlife, it was still done in an exciting way. The action scenes and the tension that resulted from them were easily the best parts, pulling off the signature JoJo-style battles perfectly with clever tricks and witty banter present throughout each fight.

La Squadra Esecuzioni must infiltrate a secure facility with access to advanced technology and blessed weaponry to steal the Holy Corpse for their employer. The I.M.P's portals are needed to get to the job location and since Blitzo is such a fan of the group, he won't let them use one unless he and his team get to come with. Risotto Nero, known in hell as St. Anger reluctantly agrees and an unusual partnership is formed.

It's not particularly long at only 42k words, but what's there is highly entertaining. I was grinning and laughing so much during some of the fights that I had to rec it as well.

I heavily recommend anyone reading A Peaceful Afterlife to skip the first chapter.
Why would someone want to skip it? You'd be a little confused if you started off on the second chapter. There is a Diamond is Unbreakable spoiler at the beginning of it, but you have to expect that going into a story that focuses on one of it's antagonists. Plus, Kira's response to getting mugged was a great way to show "Yes, this is still Yoshikage Kira." with his attitude.

Looks like the author has fixed it up since the last time I read it on spacebattles.

I recommend the Red Dead Redemption 2 Fanfiction "The Matthews Family". In this, Dutch sacrifices himself during the Saint Denis bank robbery and it involves Hosea taking lead of the situation. An action packed start, but it quickly becomes a very psychologically heavy story. There's lots of LGBT themes in it, which I think all of you would like, and diagnoses Dutch as having suffered multiple mental disorders. Pretty great if you ask me.

Is that complete? It's marked 19/20 chapters.

I'd like to rec Accomplice by batwayneman on AO3. It's a Batman fic (around 55k), and it's a very well-developed backstory for Commissioner Gordon, who doesn't generally get much attention from the fandom. Batman himself is frequently mentioned, but rarely appears in-text.
