The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

I'd like to put the first season of Administrative Mishap up for consideration. There's an ongoing season 2 right now, but I figure each season corresponds well with a book in a series and so is a valid consideration even if the story/series itself isn't complete. It's simply a matter of how the author decided to organize it.

It's technically a Worm/Supergirl crossover, but it's mostly just a Supergirl fic with an OC that happens to be the result of Post-GM QA slurping into Taylor's braindead body and getting a heavily influenced by it. It's very good. Tone wise, it's not particularly heavy or dark. The set-up portions of the first chapter aren't the best indicator of what the rest of the fic is like, but it gets its feet under it before the chapter ends.
I'll derec. It's not bad, it's just not great, more specifically it suffers from some serious emotional whiplash, going from comedic relief "haha alien can't human" to very serious emotional struggles, back and forth constantly. It's also very reactive, the inserted character doesn't really do much of their own accord, just going through the story and reacting to everything going on.

So in short, good but I don't personally think it's good enough for this threads purposes.

I'll second this.
It's definitely not bad, but it just really didn't click with me.

Heya, so uh, this is kinda a bit hard to say but unfortunately due to some irl stuff I'm not actually sure I'll be able to update this month >.>

I'll try to see if I can do it in the next couple of days (which i'll probably stop my count at this post then), but if I can't, the next update would be around the same time, but in January. Sorry guys!

Sorry, i'm going to derec.

I feel super bad about it, because Addie is just about one of the best treatments of the neuro-divergent character I have seen, but I have read a lot of stories where I only know one half of the crossover and i got pulled in anyway. AM doesn't do that, it actively turns me off from supergirl.

I get the impression of following canon too much to be creatively interesting in divergence (I may be wrong here, but like it feels very on-rails for the fairly large section I read), while not giving enough to really get people not already invested in the supergirl plot to get invested.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants a story about a neuro-divergent character, but as a supergirl fic it just falls short.

Also it's not finished unless I've missed something, so it wouldn't be eligible. I would rec it if it were though.

Reccing Still in the Simulation's The Bikini Bottom Horror.
What started out as a set of simple sketches has become one of the best fan comics I've seen in a long time. While it starts as just a bit of shock humor it quickly grows into a real horror adventure story with excellent character moments and solid humor.

Well... that was a thing. I'm recing that to anyone who watched Spongebob, though I'm not sure if it's a horror story because of the contents or just how ludicrous (or is it just more realistic in all the wrong ways?) the story is.

Well, that's... uh. A thing. That exists.
I.... don't know whether I can rec or derec this.

It Starts With One is an absolutely fascinating Worm AU. If I had to summarize it in a sentence, it would probably be something like "In a world just a bit different than out own, a girl gets bug powers and decides to Save The World by murdering billionaires." While I don't support murdering people, the fic does an absolutely incredible job of articulating the fundamental differences between Leftism and the ruling Liberal consensus, as personified in Skitter and her nemesis. Plus, the prose is just incredibly evocative and does a tremendous job of building tension.

I highly recommend that you give it a look.

I'm... conflicted on this.
On one hand, it is fantastically written. The author takes care to not condone or condemn Taylor's actions, which I love.
On the other, it butchers any semblance of the canon characters. These are OCs with familiar powers, nothing more.

Additionally, the final A/N spoils a lot of the careful apolitical nature of the fic by going on a page-long rant about the evils of capitalism, which ruined a lot of my enjoyment for it.

On the whole, though, I have to de-rec it. The final A/N pushes it firmly into political preaching, which I strongly dislike.

I'm not sure how you ever thought the fic was apolitical to begin with? Alexandria is very obviously the villain of the piece from the moment she shows up; although the narrative doesn't necessarily approve of what Taylor is doing, we're very clearly meant to be sympathizing with her pov.

Edit: like, did you miss that the entire thesis of the fic is that capitalism is terrible?

Seconding the rec for this one.

Still reading it myself but I'm unclear how even the loose rules of this thread allow for de-reccing something on the basis of an A/N? That's not part of the story, it's literally just the author stepping out of characters to speak directly on the side. It'd be like saying a book is bad because of the about the author section on the book jacket.

Its pretty good so I'll second the rec for "It starts with One".
It also amazes me how some commentors on the fic "knows" the author is a loser teenager who doesn't "know how the real world works".
I guess Socialism is triggering...

I am no socialist, and I admit the rather obvious anvils dropped in the first chapter was a turnoff, but to each their own I guess. I haven't read the whole thing so I can't give an honest rec or derec based on the actual writing quality. Though I find it surprising since SV is considered more left than SB. Or maybe just the subset of people visiting this thread don't go to N & P

Nah I meant some of the comments on AO3.

Er, last time didn't exactly work out(sorry >.<), so let's try again this month! I'll be moving up the counting up to this post instead now, but everything should stay the same as usual. See ya guys later!

It absolutely is.

The pit of despair would certainly suggest it to be so, yeah.

Although I do think that the early comments might be less a function of Socialism and more that threatening a billionaire so he gives you all his money is super easy to trace.

The point of the fic is that capitalism is terrible, but so is Taylor. She's a fifteen year old girl, with a fifteen year old's understanding of the world, and her solutions kinda really suck. The fic is pretty careful to never say "Taylor is the good guy", which I greatly appreciated, at least until the final chapter.

The flanderization of Alexandria, though, is just stupid. The fic tries to portray her as an agent of the status quo, in contrast to Taylor's violet rejection to it. Sometimes it does a good job, sometimes she comes across as a whiny nihilistic 12-year-old.

I will admit that I'm biased because I have a very negative view of the author's political views, but I hardly think that diminishes my criticism.

That's the single biggest character trait canon Alexandria has, though. She is incredibly devoted to the status quo, considerably more than pretty much anyone else in worm. She explicitly uses her influence in cauldron to prop up the current western governments and establish organizations like the PRT and Protectorate. She founded and joined 2 different police organizations. This isn't wholly a bad trait, because the status quo isn't wholly bad, but this is absolutely a core part of who Alexandria is.
