The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

Wizards in Winter is an amazing little crossover between Calvin and Hobbes and Diane Duane's Young Wizards series. It's basically a "how Calvin becomes a wizard" fic, and it manages to beautifully balance Calvin's whimsy and zaniness with the more serious tone of the book series.
I'm reccing this as well. It does really well at catching the tone of both and telling a story that fits.

Just discovered this thread, and already gotten some excellent stories from it. Though I'd give a story rec in return.
The Spiral of Lives by Damkianna. It's an Avatar story (the movie, not the TV show) where the titular Avatar technology does not exist, and follows Jake Sully as a military grunt on Pandora who still ends up in the wheelchair. I really enjoyed the deeper insights into Neytiri and her tribe, and removes the cross-species romance in favour of an excellent building of friendship and respect between a group of humans and the People.
Seconding this. Plays up the worldbuilding of Avatar and shifts the focus from bland Jake Sully to a much more diverse ensemble.

Thrower of the Dart, an Artemis Fowl/Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover by Vathara.
What might have happened instead of Artemis Fowl book 6, if it'd happened in the Marvel Universe. Megalomaniacs ahoy!

Derec. Has huge potential but has huge OOC problems and all of Vathara's normal issues.

I feel conflicted about the removal of Halkegenia Online. One the one hand, I want to say it should stay up, on the other, it's kind of boring.

Yeah, HaLO is an amazing concept and story, unfortunately marred first by being a rough draft and then by being edited more as a writing exercise than as a story. Refactored really lost a lot of the magic.

I got two. The first has an incomplete sequel as well, the second is a standalone.

Russian Roulette: Reloaded, a Katekyo Hitman Reborn fanfiction by Vixen Tail.
No one ever said an SI gets a place in canon events, or that they would be ideally placed at all. How much would you recall if you had decades to go before anything in a long forgotten story comes to be?
(SI/OC as part of the Russian Mafiya, liberties taken with crafting said Mafiya Family.)
(My sole complaint with it is it is incredibly long, with 110 long chapters and a sequel in the works. But then, for me that isn't a complaint, it's a bonus.)

Thrower of the Dart, an Artemis Fowl/Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover by Vathara.
What might have happened instead of Artemis Fowl book 6, if it'd happened in the Marvel Universe. Megalomaniacs ahoy!

Thread search is your friend. Thrower of the Dart is not a new rec. For simplicity I'll quote what I said already:
Derecing. Was a fun read, but all, or nearly all, of the characters have the same voice. That voice is also carried over from much of Vathara's other works. The narrative is largely indistinguishable from any other work by Vathara, as is the underlying message. It might be less clear than in Project Tatterdemalion, but the message and dialogue is a near perfect match. And Tatterdemalion manages to have more distinct characters anyway.
There is more, and Vathara is a popular topic, so take a look and see what all has been said using the thread search function. Just remember to leave ancient arguments in the grave where they belong, if at all possible.

I don't remember if I said it, but I remember thinking it, so I'm retracting my possible de-rec to recommend Anderson Quest. I just reread it over the weekend and could not keep away from it for more than a few hours. A fantastic ride that everyone should read.

I would like to to nominate a story for consideration, namely Of Love and Bunnies by Crazygirl47. Quite frankly this is one of the funniest fanfics that I have ever ready. The one complaint would have to be the ending was a bit rushed, but I still love this story.

Edit: Summary: Set just after Dino Thunder. When Angel Grove announces another Power Rangers Day, Tommy takes the Dino Rangers to Angel Grove for a reunion with the original team… including Kimberly. TommyKim, JasonTrini, KiraTrent. UPDATE: Complete.

De rec.

Vixen tail certainly came up with an interesting idea here, but the execution is fairly flawed, I recall reading a couple of chapters and dropping it fairly quickly. Its marred by the usual VT problems, a strong start but it quickly loses all power and peters out.

Given her past writings (and I repeat I didn't read it 'til the end) I'm sure it has the same much competency problem her naruto fics have. Specially her Naruto cross with Canon Naruto verse.

Derec. It's... like potato chips, I think is the best way to put it.

Enjoyable, but there's no meat there and boy howdy is there a lot of it. Everybody is just sort of zany because zany.

I've got some finished BNHA fics to recommend.
Hero Class Civil Warfare by RogueDruid
Heroes lead by Bakugo.
Villains lead by Midoriya.
Seven days prep time.
Three days for Izuku Midoriya to show why they should be glad he's not a real villain.

Taking place before the final exam, class 1A and 1B are combined for a multi-day heroic/villain scenario. This is an excellently entertaining story with Mastermind Midoriya, rule-lawyering, munchkining of Quirks and combinations, and a great progression of action and intrigue. Has two sequels, one of which is also complete.
Intersection has the students/teachers from the Civil War story transported to canon BNHA, so its student body versus student body and a showcase of just how many changes have resulted from the Civil War.

Hold Your Breath by ElpisLumina
A crossover with Kimetsu no Yaiba. The Demon Slayers won. Muzan was killed. But Nezuko remained a demon. Outliving her friends and family, Nezuko remains detached from the world, until she offers to babysit her neighbour Midoriya Izuku. A "Izuku trained as a Demon Slayer" fic, it also features descendants of the Demon Slayer Corps in modern times and a Tomura who wasn't taken by All For One, so the League of Villains has a different leader.

journey to the past by aloneintherain
Izuku is five years old the first time he's saved by heroes. He's an instant fan of the woman in pink with her cheerful smile and the man with his ice powers and fine-boned features, even if they both refuse to tell him their names.
For most of his life, Izuku has been the centre of villain attacks, but he has never been injured. Every time, he's saved by bright, unknown heroes—heroes who smile at Izuku, and ruffle his hair or ply him with hugs, and seem mesmerised by how small he is.
Heroes that the rest of the world doesn't believe exists.
(Time-travelling Class 1-A AU)
Really good experience reading this. Seeing little Midoriya meeting all his grown-up classmates (and then meeting them again as teenagers) was very cute and well done. Time travel doesn't change too much from canon, just little things here and there. Has a few plot twists that don't alter too much and only improve upon the story when they are revealed.

So... Uh I don't really have any other fics to recommend that are complete so I'll just ask what was everyone's review on Ruby Quest a page or two ago.

I'm asking because all the things I recommended were ignored...

There is a quest I implore people to read known as Ruby Quest by TGWeaver ... I would rather not say what its like so the only thing I can say is it stars a rabbit named Ruby since saying anything might spoil the surprise
it's like portal mixed with body horror and Lovecraft horror its really well written with many surprises.
You can find it here Ruby Quest

You want a reveiw, yeah? Have a derec, for your trouble. I had to click through multiple pages of bare bones, minimalist descriptions of turning on a light. And the art was pretty poor to boot. The art is passable, at best, and the prose is just plain bad.

Personally have to derec these two due to just how out of character Izuku and a good number of other characters are throughout the whole thing.
Gonna take a look at the other two before saying anything about them but they look interesting.

Liked it but it really didn't feel like a 10/10 more like a 8.5 a good fic but not one od the best.

Hero class warfare gets a sad de rec from me.

Izuku is pushed onto a bad situation here, for this simulation he's the leader of the villains and needs to turn his formidable knowledge about Quirks as well his eye at analyzing them to well, villany. This runs counter to his dream of being a Hero.

This in paper is wonderful material to force character growth and exploration, Izuku slides onto a role not unlike OFA's and in fact, some of his tactics are taken straight out of OFA's playbook. Good right? He's taking it seriously? That's what I want?

Yes and no, I think the fic could have benefited perhaps with a chapter or two focusing on Izuku accepting this is the hand destiny dealt him and having his friends encourage him to not take it to heart. The other issue this fic has, is that it has Izuku honestly employing tactics he'd find reprehensible, in particular, brainwashing a person on the "Hero team" days before, so they'd "defect" to the "villains side" and its something the big bad wolf of BNHA absolutely do if given the chance.

Izuku would not do that and it cheapens a bit the conflict in my opinion, the rest of the idea is well thought, Izuku's talents when he's given a decent enough shot of confidence turn him onto a formidable foe and that's a good thing, it shines a spot light on his talents. But the execution is sadly lacking in many aspects.

A pass, a couple more chapters dealing with Izuku overcoming his issues and everything else and this could easily be one of the best damn fics, because I can honestly tell a lot of care and thought went onto this. Have the kids run this exercise to become familiar with the kinds of tactics villains would use, force the other group to think out of the box, test their ability to cooperate, if needed, sow the seeds of undercover agents for the future.

But yeah, as it is, de rec.

Fair points. I think (I really need to reread it) that it references a few times in-fic that Izuku studied more "theatrical" villains and adopts a method acting style both for himself and the other villains to really capture what attitude they'd need to completely win the exercise, hence the OOC actions by the villain team. There's also a part in Chp. 26 where Midoriya worries if he's gone too far with his personality shift and wonders if he should use a "failsafe" he'd prepared specifically for if he went too far.
As for the brainwashing, that was more reinforcing what was there than actually causing something.
Setsuna was so pissed off at Bakugou's attitude that she wanted to specifically show him up by ensuring the villains victory and then switching teams after they had been finalized (which was against the rules). Izuku had her as a mole on the heroes side feeding them information. But if she had realized there was a rule against her switching sides, then she could easily act as a counter-mole instead. So Shinsou's subliminal command was mostly "don't read the rules" more than "betray the heroes."

I love the idea of fic recs with discussion, so I thought I'd try with this, which is definitely one of the best fics I've ever read:

an irrevocable condition by layers of silence. (MCU; Bucky Barnes)

In its most basic form, the fic is this:

Bucky Barnes, after escaping from HYDRA in The Winter Soldier, hides out in Bucharest. It's outsider POV, and it's amazing.

The summary on AO3 is part of the first paragraph, and immediately tells you if you're gonna love it or not:

Maria Elena Popescu's apartment building might be a faceless grey dump, but it's her faceless grey dump, and she's proud of it. It's small – three floors, and three very poky flats to a floor, except for the bottom floor that was the entrance hall and her own quarters – but that just meant she knew everybody who lived here, and liked them. Nobody was allowed to come in here and make it worse, or disreputable, not even tall dark and good-looking foreigners who reacted with an appropriate amount of fear when Maria eyeballed them.

Well I mean it is a quest... The art is a acquired taste, you might like "Roommates memoirs of a hairless ape" better.

A tentative second. On the one hand, I adore it and it's top notch slice of life, and my favorite MCU fics are those that go between the lines, since individual MCU films are rather disparate and a little disjointed from each other. On the other, it's not very Marvel-y; you could easily chop off the last chunk of the fic and the handful of references beforehand, and you might never realize this is actually a story about Bucky Barnes. I'd consider it a best damn fic, but I can easily see why others would not.

I know some people aren't goong to be cool with how Izuku is portrayed in Hero Class Civil Warfare, but I honestly don't think the thing with the brainwashing was that serious? And personally I don't have a problem with people changing characters a bit to fit their AU. The story works better that way.
Setsuna is doing it all on her own, Shinso just basically tells her to not check if she's actually allowed to defect. She wants to herself, they're not forcing it on her. Yeah it's a little amoral but not to the point where it makes me feel like the fic doesn't make sense from a character perspective.

I will rec Hero Class Civil Warfare. It's a solid read and uses a lot of characters that you just don't get to see often enough, and employs much more teamwork than canon does, which I really like.

I will derec Intersection, the sequel. It just feels too crack-ey in comparison to the original, and didn't hold my interest that much.

While Hold Your Breath was very enjoyable for me, I will be dereccing it. @Elpis is good at dialogue and character interactions, but the descriptive writing isn't that great and the fight scenes are probably the weakest element of the fic. Worth the read, a well executed fusion, but not exactly one of the best fics ever written.

Haven't read the last one.

Derec on Hero Class Civil Warfare. It's fun at times, but the deeper in you go the more it feels like the hero team is seriously jobbing. They barely seem to learn or adapt or innovate past the occasional initial problem that is either easily outthought or already planned for from my recollection. Yeah, Bakugo's an asshole but he's not an idiot - and when your whole story is about Izuku outthinking people there dang well needs to be a point where it looks like somebody might actually outthink him, and that's never on the table.

Plus like all of the teacher segments boil down to "Izuku-sempai is soooo coooool! SQUEEE!" and it's like, hey, story, leave the cheerleading to the readers.

Actually, changing from a rec to a derec. I haven't read it for a while and was more focused on the other complaints that I didn't remember that I got annoyed at how the Heroes acted like dumbfucks a fair amount of the time, and rarely actually won engagements. Things don't always go off without a hitch, but most of the time they do and sometimes when they don't seem to it's revealed that actually it was all part of the plan. Nobody ever really outsmarts Izuku and that's a problem that leads to it being more stompy than I like. I do still enjoy the fic a good deal, especially because (as I said) it features a lot of characters that don't get enough screentime, but it does have enough problems that I think it's not worth the list. The thing with the teachers can get over the top, yeah, but I think if you had a more balanced back and forth of the teams outplaying one another and the teachers complimenting the strategy of both sides it'd feel more natural and less wanky. It's not the wankiest thing ever, but there are points where it does get there. Thanks for reminding me.

Imma gonna derec that chief because calling anything I write the best anything besides maybe 'best thing Elpis has ever finished' is probably the greatest mistake of anyone's reading career.

(I'm glad you enjoyed it, however. If I had taken more time with it, I might be happier with it, but I'm still pretty damn happy with how far I got after starting an finishing a fic in 50 days)

That isn't (quite) a reason for me to rec it(aspecially as I just heard about it now and haven't read it yet), but generally if the author doesn't feel like that there's no chance of it being worth adding to the list.
