The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

Three Boxes of Takoyaki is a fantastic Yakuza 0 fic by magimagicka over on ao3 that manages to resolve Majima and Makoto's relationship in a much more satisfying way than the game did. The prose is a little rough in spots, but it never threw me out of the story, and the plotting and characterization are more than enough to make up for it imo.

Alright, I've got a couple zootopia ones:

1: How to treat a Festering wound is great, It follows basically exactly after the movie ends and explores a number of things, from some of the problems that cropped up after Judy left the ZPD and before she returned, how the Mayor returned to his position, some politics and all wrapped up in a well written 188k words.

2: There's the Fire Triangle, with a new strain of Night Howler developed by a corporation run by a rabbit and a number of other things. It's over half a million words long and quite well written. (Although I'm not sure If It's finished yet.)

3: The final fic I have to reccomend is A Paradox In Time, about Nick and Judy finding a strange pocketwatch that transports them back to Zootopia in the 20s, with all the problems that entails and It's about them trying to find their way back. There's also another fic that follows this one, Broken Time, which has the two transported back to King Arthurs--or the Zootopia version--time, I haven't really gone through this one however, so I won't Rec it.

Fire triangle isn't labeled as being complete and the latest chapter doesn't look like a final chapter so it doesn't qualify.

Also holy shit these are long, I might have to come back and say something about them after reading them in a couple of weeks.

Edit I have to say while they are good they are just good they kinda lack a spark of greatness and are both a tad heavy-handed with how they handle characters and the setting.

I haven't seen my all time favorite yet, so I finally made an account to recommend The Girl who Loved And its sequel, Violence Inherent in the System, by Darth Drafter.

Primarily a Harry Potter and Sailor Moon crossover with a generous helping of Ranma 1/2 holding it together. There are a couple of lemons, but they're skippable and mostly of the "fade to black" type.

As far as plot goes, it starts with Harry panic apparating directly over the pool of drowned magical moon princess in China. Stuff happens, shenanigans ensue, and Harry and Usagi live happily ever after. Wait, what?

It's been years since I've read those two, but I vaugely recall those two having Stock Fanon Issues somewhere. I'll have to reread to actually check though, I don't remember if the issues were on the Potter end which would probably be Manipulative Dumbles, or on the SM end which is typically Pluto or Crystal Tokyo.
Edit: Ah yes, Greater Good™ Puppy Kicking Dumbledore in the first chapter. I'll see if I can work past it, but I suspect my higher standards aren't going to be kind to it nowdays.

The Next Frontier
The good, amusing and interesting KSP First Contact story, featuring best astronautical hijinks you have ever seen and interesting Plot Evolution.
The Next Frontier is excellent. Good humor, very solid KSP worldbuilding, avoids the urge to put the Kerbals in contact with the Firefly crew and avoids the urge to bash the Alliance more than necessary. That said, I'd link the AO3 version over the SB version. The SB version is poorly formatted due to being posted in short chunks pre-threadmark, and still has some extraneous bits of early draft floating about.

But that's literally the only problem I have with the fic and the AO3 version fixes that, so I'm going to enthusiastically second this.

It's a common trope, but it does get the plot moving in the necessary direction. If it helps, his Puppy Kicking nature is addressed in the context of the crossover without being handwaved away. It's one of the things I really like about this one, you get to see plot mechanics from both series interacting both to create new problems and solve them. Most of the crossovers I've read tend to let one side overpower the other.

Being Moon Healing Escalation'd out if it, if I'm remembering right, does not necessarily excuse this particularly egregious Dumbles. As I said I need to reread further, but it doesn't leave a good first impression at all.

A Young Woman's Political Record just ended. jacobk stated that it is just waiting for the Epilogue and sporadic omakes.

Sending it up here.

Origin Series: Youjo Senki (A Young Girl's War Record) / Saga of Tanya the Evil
Fanfic Plot: When the Empire finally surrendered and quartered, a certain young girl looks for employment elsewhere...

Plot Armor/Hook/Heaven's Blessing: Tanya's modern PR, massive charisma, skilled allies, and the everpresent Misunderstanding Field

Pros:
+ Comedy of Errors caused by Misunderstanding Field, between Tanya who is gung-ho for a cushy no-responsibility political career and how the rest of the world perceives the meteoric rise of the Republic of Germania under her guidance.
+ (Initial) Meticulous research for characters & world building.

Cons:
- The pacing gets skewed as the second war started, there are less scenes of other PoVs that would give the comedy of errors the humor, whether from Tanya's subordinates, her enemies, or neutral parties.
- Communist bashing gets tiresome after a while.

Reccs & Dereccs (as per 16/07/2020)
+ SolipsistSerpent
- Winged_One²
- TheUnicorn
- HavocKeeper
- spiritualtheist
+- strauss
+- Lasre
+- Kemayo (+ if it is book 1 only, up to chapter 20)

Derecced for taking France in two weeks (and apparently wrapping up the war in a stupidly fast time in general, but that is the part that made me quit).

Derec. The story started great, and if it had continued the same way I'd have reced it myself, however the last few chapters have pacing issues, and the author stopped the meticulous reserach that charactarizes the earlier plot and world building and the last chapper is more like a summary of where the story was headed than an actual chapter. If you want a great, but incomplete Tanya the Evil fic, then this is the story for you. If you don't mind the summary of the ending then you can also read the latest chapter, but it definitely is not the "best ever".

Derecced for taking France in two weeks
That part actually fit with the rest of the story, if you have France mobilize and invade in a day, then it's perfectly resonable for the Germanians to defeat them in two weeks. However that is part of what I mentioned as pacing issues.

De-rec from me as well. The beginning is really good, but around the start of the second war the pacing starts taking hits and lots of the tension starts fading out. After not!Germany defeats not!France in two weeks it starts feeling like they're taking a victory lap imo.

I agree with the above, plus Tanya's constant commie bashing (and the thread's uncritical agreement with it) just got tiresome after a while.

Btw, could I get some feedback on the Yakuza rec I posted earlier? I don't care if people like it or not, but posting a rec and getting radio silence is kinda frustrating.

It's literally a third of the time it took the Nazis to do the job. Sure it may be theoretically feasible, but the Francoise were supposed to have a professional, highly mobile army (not to mention the mages). One chapter Tanya sets off to be the bait and lure out some more of the French forces, the next chapter they apparently have not been engaged at all and are driving tanks through Paris? It's probably the best example of how the fic turned into Tanya just scoring massive runaway successes, without any trouble following them.

I like the fic but once it started to update faster there was a very noticeable drop in quality that continues as it went, I think it is clear the author was burning out but didn't want to finish it later. So while I would still rec it for people to read it does not fit here.

Sure, but the point is that the Francois managing to get moving in a day is much less plausible. I didn't say it was belivable, just that it fit the story which had the timelines all very compressed.

Derec.
I'll give it another try, but I never managed to get started reading this - I lose interest before the story starts, so while it might be a great story that's enough for me to say it doesn't fit here.

(A Young Girl's Political Career) It's still a recc from me, mainly due to just how well-written the initial story arc is. Despite the harsh drop in quality, it was still one of the better fics I've read, especially considering just how lackluster other Youjo Senki fanfics are. It's not quite worth a de-recc for the thread, because the fic itself is mostly solid. Also, I tend to give sympathy points for author burnout...

Oh I agree that if you don't count the last chapter it's one of the best fics ever, it's just not complete. As to your other points, while I agree it's the best Tanya fanfiction ever written, this isn't the thread for "the best [insert qualifier] fanfiction ever", it's for "the best fics ever".
As for the author burning out, I have sympathy, but
1)I have more respect for authors who say "Look guys I'm tired of this fic, and I'm not going to complete it" than ones who force a rushed ending just so they can say it's complete.
2)That doesn't improve the overall quality of the fic.

Mm, yeah, I'm on the side of really liking the fic, but agreeing that the authorial burn-out is probably enough to derail it from list-inclusion. Ending with a whimper, and all that. Unless the epilogue wraps everything up and changes how that feels, of course.

Anyway, I'm conflicted enough that this is neither a rec nor a derec.

That said... we normally allow multi-part fics to get component parts into the list even if later parts become unworthy. And Chapter Twenty, the one where Tanya finally has that conversation with Rudersdorf and learns that its her own overachieving that's prevented her from getting what she wanted all along, ends with an author's note that it's the end of book one. And said book one is absolutely list-worthy. :D

That is a very good point and I'll definitely second the rec for Book 1 of A young Woman's Political record. However AFAIK there isn't anywhere that book 1 is posted as a separate work fro m the rest of the story, so if it made the list it would have to be with a qualifier that it only refers to book 1, not sure if that works for this list.

I quite like those two and have reread them a couple of times, but the start of The Girl who Loved is god awful. The only reason I managed to get through it on a reread was because I knew that it would get better. But wow, the characterization of both Dumbledore and Snape is ridiculous in the beginning and I know that if I'd find it in a story I haven't read before, I'd instantly close the tab.

Nominating this hilarious little Naruto one-shot. This was written before the canon revelations about Sakura's parents, by the way.

If you think that it's a tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger (perished last April due to COVID related complications), you would be correct.

Also I have to mention the photoshopped pics of Minase Akiko to make her look more like Sakura's mother.
