The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

I'm going to derec Mauling Snarks for being incredibly boring to read, and from what I have heard, it remains boring and overly drawn out for its entire 1.6 million word span.
Ok this thread is actually incredibly annoying. Why is it boring? What about it is boring? Is it a niche, arcane subject matter? Are there no meaningful changes in the characters or plot? Also, "from what I have heard"? Why bother including some nebulous other opinion which also has zero reasoning, literally what does that contribute to your point.

I actually enjoyed it and found that (if you manage to get past the start and ignore the impossibility about the S9) it is quite enjoyable, however it is very much a SLOW paced character story. As an example there are multiple chapters in about a couple of characters going shopping. That's not the only thing hapening in the chapter and there's a lot of humor in those chapters, but there wasn't much actually happening in those chapters. If you're looking for any sort of dramatic tension, this is not the story for you. If you enjoy slow paced, funny stories and have very flexible SoD you might enjoy it.

EDIT:Since we're on the subject of Mauling Snarks I'll mention Mauling Canon, which is "The Taylor from Mauling Snarks ends up in canon thanks to a Tinkertech Malfunction (Take a bow Leet) is also complete and IMO far superior to Mauling Snarks in that the problematic world building of Mauling Snarks is de-emphasized while the more interesting parts get a lot more attention. It also is much faster paced and while it maintains the humor also has considerable dramatic tension. I wouldn't recommend it because I'm not sure it stands on it's own, but I also won't derec it. First chapter is Mauling Snarks (Worm) (Complete)

If I read a Fic and don't think it's among the best I've ever read, why should I rec it as among the best I've ever read?

And what if I believe one that you have recced isn't either? Who is right? By your logic both hypothetical fics must be derecced. Every single fic that has ever been recced should be derecced on the grounds of them being impossible to please everyone or on the grounds that if they were REALLY the best then everyone in this thread would have already flipped through each and every posted fic.

Compromise and subjectivity must be kept in mind. Not all derecomendations are equal and I feel like a lot of people seem to be misinterpreting their own personal biases and preferences that overall amount more as nitpicks as legitimate enough to argue that the fic should be removed from the list. Things like word count and needing to know the source material are incredibly subjective criticisms that I would argue shouldn't count after enough people contest it

It's just so ridiculous and it has turned a thread meant for celebrating fiction into an argument thread trying to grab at an ephemeral concept of what fics should have the "prestigious" honor of being in the index

I mean, that's why there's space not only for recs and derecs but just to say that you didn't super enjoy a fic. And, as mopman43 said, the point is supposed to be more for one of consensus.

I feel like a lot of people go blind when reading the title and miss that it is "the best damn ficus YOU'VE ever read" and not "the best damn fics ever"

Subjectivity is directly stated in the title but many people derec on ridiculous grounds that only make sense if they believe this thread is meant to find fics that are objectively the best around
The whole reason Dereccing is a thing in the first place is because this isn't just a list of users and what they think are the best fics ever. It is a collaborative attempt to find and share the 'best damn fics ever' that most everyone can agree are the best. (The objectively best fics around if fic quality can be considered objective),

I mean I can't articulate well why I found it to be boring, except that I didn't find it to be all that engaged to read and it felt very drawn out and padded. I also wasn't as interested in it as I was in Hybrid Hive, which is why I never got as far as I got on that story, but I stopped reading that for basically the same reason - there is not enough happening for how many words there are.

Except it doesn't matter. If Winged_One finds it boring, they don't need to elaborate. It's boring, thus it gets a derec.

Are you for real lol? Not all critique is equal, if you're not actually able to articulate your opinions on something why should anyone bother listening to you in particular? I'd like to think that the people on this site are capable of better analysis than say, Cinema Sins.

just because they personally find it boring doesn't mean anything about the quality of the story if they don't bother elaborating. I personally find civ management quests boring, that doesnt mean they aren't well written, but they don't appeal to me because I prefer character driven stuff. Just saying "it's boring" isn't actually worth anything of substance.

I have a recommendation that I wish to share, now that it is complete, Mauling Snarks by @CmptrWz.

Derec.

I've tried multiple times to get into this fic because a friend of mine really enjoys it, and I have absolutely no issue with the story length, but I just can't. The characters aren't believable or are so far out of character it should just be original fiction (and the differences from canon aren't interesting to me, they just seem straight-up bad), the whole S9 thing is really contrived, the language used is just bizarre and yeah, I know it comes from a story that's intentionally bizarre, but I just can't get behind people actually using it to describe things. Even people who rec the fic recognize the start is sloppy, and for me, it's just too sloppy.

I can't tell if another pass and a major rewrite of at least the beginning would fix my issues with it long enough for me to get into what's supposed to be the great parts of the fic, but I think my issues with it go beyond just taste, so it's a derec from me.

I'm going to derec Shadows in Starlight, too. It's not a bad story, but it meanders for far too long in the early arcs of Rurouni Kenshin; the Dark Side bullshit of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu only annoys me more now; and honestly the more I think about the less I like the direction Vathara takes Obi-Wan's character.

Great worldbuilding, though.

I haven't read Mauling Snarks - only the author's other Nanoha cross. But people have suggested it had similar problems so they may apply here too.

From memory, I would sum up its problems as this: A common problem in quests, especially ones with a more "simulationist" vote structure is that the updates end up basically reading as a description of "things the voters said they wanted to do". Also, voters, if given the chance, will tend to try to play everything safe and just accumulate power without actually doing anything interesting. The story reads like that. It is very "tell-y".

Adding to this, there is basically zero emotional engagement from the characters, and everyone is incredibly bland no matter how appealing the ideas could be in theory. The story is essentially a power fantasy, but isn't actually a fantasy since it has none of the emotional pull that a good power fantasy has. It's more "a story where the main character is very powerful and the setting warps around them and they spend all their time describing the things they're doing to become more powerful". It's like Ryuugi's "The Games We Play" except without anything/one actually being exciting.

So: is that only a problem for Hybrid Hive: Eat Shard? Or does that apply here as well?

I'm also going to derec Mauling Snarks. I had fun with it at the start, but the way Taylor kept getting more powerful and effective became ... grating(?) after a while. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with extremely powerful and competent characters, but the way it happened didn't really work in this case.
The gimic of "Taylor read the manual and it let her get away with something no one expected" also outstayed its welcome, despite being fun at the start.

Actually, I think that sums up the story's main problem: It does some things well, but it continues follows the same patterns for far to long, to the point where they no longer work well and it never really adjusts the world to keep up. Eventually, the story loses its sense of conflict and tension (yes, both of those things should and do exist in happy slice of life stories, you don't need fighting or angst for either). If Mauling Snarks was much shorter, it probably could have been great, but it's not, so it isn't.

That's a pretty good description. It's a slice of life that pretends to be a power fantasy and spends entirely too much time focusing on power in a slice of life setting.

De-reced for pretty much the same reasons. It's been a while since I read it, so I don't recall all of the details, but I recall being really annoyed with their treatment of Hiten Mitsurugi, but far more annoyed by how they handled Obi-Wan and the Jedi in general.

Also, Hiten Mitsurugi loses a lot of its luster when you reduce it to just another light saber style. I think Vathara missed a major opportunity by not making it a completely mundane style that can still compete with force users on even ground. It would have been perfectly in keeping with the source material and it would have kept a lot of the styles more recognizable elements intact. (Seriously, how do you represent a style that focuses on battojutsu using a weapon that doesn't have a sheathe?)

It's not like there's not precedent now, with Chirrut in Rogue One.

I'm not sure what you're talking about as a problem for quests as it's not a quest and I don't think either story ends chapters with anything like "a description of "things the voters said they wanted to do" ". Lack of emotional engagement is a problem, although I think it's a lot more severe (or at least more noticeable) in hybrid shard since there's so much more that should be producing significant emotional reactions.

Ok, so the thing that often happens in quests where you have, say, a system where the voters vote on a set of actions to do this "day" or whatever is that the QM then feels obligated to, well, show each thing they voted for and give update space to each thing. So you end up with updates that are basically a set of paragraphs going through and describing the results of each of the things the players voted to do. This does not lead to particularly good stories, though it may be semi-acceptable gameplay.

Hybrid Shard's updates tend to read like that kind of quest. It's like the voters have put together a training plan, and then the author is going through and telling the voters what the results of each of the things they voted for are, and how they've levelled up their magic skills.

I've been trying fics from the front page. I would derec

Delenda Est - Harry Potter

Somewhat promising (thought Bellatrix/Harry Potter is normally a warning sign of bad fics). Technically competent but a lot of issues. Decent, but not best ever.

Whitewashing of the Blacks and Pureblooded elite that caused the whole mess.

Which causes the issue of the pieces against Voldemort to assemble too fast, meaning the Author had to do the time skip forward to stop them just dealing with him.

Harry and Bellatrix not knowing about Horcruxes as a plot element is just discarded. That could have really messed things up, but instead, they just find out anyway and set out to eliminate them just like nearly every other fanfic.

The caginess with allies is for no good reason and they walk into incredibly dangerous situations with no plan for if they fail. Which is particularly galling after they got time skipped and lost decades of the fight, letting Voldemort run free. Not that he uses the time to really do anything.

Really everything after the time skip forward is a major quality step down.

Bellatrix is redeemed way too fast. It is very hard to square this fics Bellatrix with the canon one, which is the one we supposedly have at the start. Fanfic authors are way too attached to making every good character like muggle stuff.

Bellatrix and Harry are super amazing duelists. I get some people are annoyed by canon going from he is an above-average talent to just an idiot who wins by luck. But fanfics go too far in the other direction way too often.

Also, derec Burn Up - Worm

The writing really did not work at all for me. Been a couple of weeks since I read it, so the details have already escaped me, beyond me not really liking it and almost quitting reading a few times. Which also isn't a good sign. I do remember quite a few moments just felt like direct fan service, like the continued clothing stealing.

Got it. No, you don't see that sort of thing in Mauling Snarks

I also derec Mauling snarks, it overstays its welcome by far. You could trim away 2/3rds of the story without removing much of substance. It's writing for the sake of writing, not bad at times certainly, but definitely not best fic I've ever read material.

This isn't a critique or review thread. If I find a story boring that's entirely valid grounds for me to derec it because it certainly doesn't fit for my own criteria for "one of the best damn fics I've ever read" and by the nature of the thread that's the only criteria that I should be voting by: Whether or not I think it deserves it. It's entirely subjective, we're not judging stories based on how well written they are, but how good we think they are.

Tbf, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that people at least put a bit of effort to explain why they found it boring in order to help inform others?

Like, if someone goes "this is boring because there's no action" and people go "dude it's a slice of life fic" then that would kinda be reasonable grounds to disregard their derec and we wouldn't be able to do that if they'd just said "this is boring". Just going "this is boring" doesn't really help people or give anyone anything to engage with.

Really everything after the time skip forward is a major quality step down.

I remember liking this fic a good deal, but it's been probably 8 years since I read it, and even now I remember how palpable the drop in quality is after the timeskip. It was like they timeskipped forward and warped into a future that operates by the rules of super!Harry fics. It really does not stick the landing for that final act. Don't construe this as a rec or derec - I don't think it's fair for me to make that call not having read it in almost a decade. Looking at the author's other fics now... well, he certainly had a niche, didn't he?

Addressing the current argument, I would agree that while yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, it seems fair to say that a derec or rec deserves more than a cursory "fic is bad/good." For the same reason that the General Recs thread has the rule of:
When recommending a story, or de-recommending as the case may be, please include why you are doing so. Please also ensure a summary is given so that readers know exactly what they are getting into.

Honestly, that should be a rule here. ...can we make that a rule?

For the sake of contribution:

Gifts, Stolen and Received - Dresden Files/Labyrinth
"It's my step-daughter," she said, eyes wet with tears and hands trembling with fear. I heard a rush of air as if a thousand fairy tales had been turned upside down at once.

I think I've recced this here before, but I searched the thread and didn't see it, so I might be misremembering? Protag from Labyrinth gets wrapped up with Jareth again after the fact, and her parents go to none other than Harry Dresden for help.

Scores points from me for really nailing Dresden's voice and capturing the general vibe, so that it feels like one of the Dresden Files short stories.

Blitzed through the fic and that last chapter had me audibly wince.

Hard seconded.

Thirding Gifts, Stolen and Received. I know nothing about Harry Dresden or Labyrinth beyond generic pop cultural osmosis, but still a fully compelling read. Short, sweet, and to the point.
