The Best Damn Fics You've Ever Read.

Ok, but if its gone from wherever it was hosted... it can't be given a rec, for the simple reason that we can't read it and make a judgment based on what we come out feeling after checking out the work.
Even more than that, a rec is, fundamentally, a suggestion that we should go out and read the work. If the fic is no longer available, we can't read it, so what would you be recommending?

A hearty thirding to Ernesto de la Cruz vs. The Court of Public Opinion. Does a very good job sketching out what something like that would look like in a way that keeps it interesting. Happy to recommend it.

Definitely a work worth a read for the concept but I'm not so sure about the execution. I found it overstaying its welcome rather quickly and the pseudo forum sections are dull and provide very little that couldn't have been conveyed in the article excerpts.

Is this fanfiction that I'm supposed to recognize the characters, or an original story? Either way, de-rec.
It is a nice concept, and fairly well done but definitely not best ever - The depictions of reactions were overly contrived with the academics being too consistent. I'd comment on the characters but there isn't really any charactarization (given the style that isn't necaserily a negative, but it means you don't have some brilliant characterization to offset any issues in story telling).

I hope there's no rule against shipping! Some of the best I've found in the years of fanfic-reading is:

Chasing the paradox by nemaline (Doctor who)

This one's Doctor/Master and screws around with the timeline a lot - and does it well! The depiction of their relationship, far deeper and more complex than a simple romantic one, is what makes this fic so impressive.

Gray by hiholly123 (Doctor who X Jessica Jones)

This one I rec because it plays with the Tenth Doctor's mental state so well. Right after The Waters of Mars, the Tenth Doctor meets Jessica Jones. She thinks he's Kilgrave... which makes him doubt himself far, far more then what counts as healthy.

Castaway by ariaadagio (Lucifer)

Chloe Decker/Lucifer. A long-ass fic, but this captured the side of Lucifer that the tv show failed to. Both Heartbreaking and heartwarming fic.

Good Endings by WyvernQuill (Good Omens)

Fluffy. It's just about getting Aziraphale and Crowely together, but it's written so well, and it's so hilarious.

dearly departed by attheborder (Good Omens)

Legitimate plot. Really felt like I was reading a legit short story, and of course, had the Good Omens fluffiness and lightheartedness.

In Person by ironychan (Marvel)

This one's about Jarvis turning into a human and its ramifications, as corporations and people take interest in his human form. Amusing read.

More Than Gravity by JenTheSweetie (Marvel)

Tony Stark/Steve Rogers. Ehhh.. don't read this if you don't like the ship, or shipping in general, but it features time travel and a very christmas-miracley atmosphere. Makes you smile at the end.

The Long Road Begins at Home by owlet (Marvel)

Wasn't sure about reccing this since it's 90% fluff, but it's a 50-chapter fic that deals with the Winter Soldier's psychological trauma. That counts as awesome in my books.

It's a sequel to this, you protect, but this one was the most striking of the whole series.

Of Monstrous Shape by RosaLui (DareDevil)

This fic is only one chapter long, but it's so awesome. Go and read it.

Enigma by Yahtzee (X-men)

Erik/Charles, and it has something to it that makes me melancholy. Basically a time-travel fix-it, but it's so well-written.

Time And Relative Mischief in Space by Taranea (Doctor who X Marvel)

Legitimate plot. Loki and the Tenth Doctor goes to adventure in a snow-covered planet. The author draws parallels ingeniously, and the plot captures the reader till the end.

Housekeeping by Ennya (Dark Knight)

This centers around an OC who encounters the Joker. OC is a housekeeper, Joker a passing customer at the hotel she works at. The only OC-centric story I read that I actually liked.

I see into the storm is already on the masterlist, but the rest of the son of suns trilogy (star wars original trilogy) is sooo excellent, so...

In Shadows and Darkness

At the Brink of the Dawn and the Darkness

Both by blank101

This trilogy's best of the best. Really. It's fricking awesome. Gives you that contentness you feel only after you read a really, really great book.

So I'd like to recommend 2 Harry Potter fics to start things off.

1) the many deaths of Harry Potter

This is a time loop fic and its pretty well written. One of the good things is that the characters are not OP and we see some good character development overall.

2) Too young to die

One of the main detractors from this fic is the wrong boy who lived trope that is so common in this genre. However, that is thankfully not the main premise of this story rather its more along the lines of the road to hell being paved with good intentions. The fic is again well written and has a unique plot even though some cliche elements are present

Can things from 4chan archives count?

Because I would rec Ghostbusters: Japan Quest if possible.

Interesting characters, respect for the equipment, and a neat spin for several youkai and spirits.

Will link if approved (I'd think it would be rated PG13)

Rule 2: Don’t Be Hateful
Live a life or die trying

"There's someone in Dracula's castle who does not belong."

An Assassin's Creed / Castlevania crossover that completely changed my opinion of Desmond Miles as a character. Beyond that I don't want to spoil it.
checks pairings is it friendship or M/M?

Edit, nvm! It is M/M and that already ticks a box for De recs.

Disclaimer:
I have no problem with homosexual relationships, or homosexuals in general. What I do have a problem is when an author changes someone's sexual orientation for the sake of their ship. Which is what this feels like from the tags.

However, I will give it a full read.

I totally get where you might be coming from on this, because fuck knows I've taken to browsing AO3 with M/M excluded after too many years of trying to browse past endless (often incestuous or otherwise squicky) blatant fujoshi bait with all the romance, characterisation, and actual depiction of homosexuality seen in the average pornhub search for lesbians.

However this fic is not that. It's just got some background romance in it involving gay characters. Characters who were somehow smuggled into mainstream media despite the best efforts of mainstream publishers the world over.

Seriously, you lot know we just got yet another series (She-Ra) where they had to wait until the very end to have the main character kiss another girl because otherwise the publishers were gonna freak out? Between horny terminally-straight internet weirdoes fetishising LGBT+ folks and media companies desperately ignoring anything the almighty focus group did not approve of, it's a bloody wonder we get any actual well-written gay content in this world. Yes I am still incredibly bitter that FinnPoe got sniped how did you know?

...That post came out rantier than I intended. Woops.

Ummm... I mean I suppose they could have had them kiss early on, but Catra's been the antagonist for most of the series, so there wasn't really a lot of opportunity there for that to happen until her redemption at the end. And I would have totally supported Finn/Poe. That would have been a lot better than anything we actually got in that trilogy.

If Finn/Poe had actually happened it would've been the one redeeming feature of the new trilogy.

But we're not here to argue about the star wars films, we're here to argue about star wars fanfiction and I don't happen to have any.

I feel.... very uncomfortable with derecs because of sexual orientation.

This was pretty good, but despite being marked complete its very much not a complete story, more of a part one. Also, its got that distinct tumblr feeling where the characters are operating in the social space and mindset of a college sophmore despite being a centuries old vampire and an assassin.

Derec.

Bi people exist, so maybe don't assume people are straight because they had a hetero relationship?

Edit: and yeah, even if Desmond was canonically straight it's still a shi tty reason to derec.

As for the fic itself, it gets a derec from me. It's fun, but it's more something to pass the time than the kind of thing I'd class as "best ever." It also, like a lot of the stuff esama writes, has the issue of not having an emotionally satisfying conclusion. I feel like the fic ended because they ran out of steam.

I'd like to rec Wizards in Winter, by vibishan. It's a great short fic that crosses Calvin and Hobbes with Diane Duane's Young Wizards series.

Summary: The advertisement is a spiky red impact bubble on the back of his box of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. Mail in just five box tops for your very own HOW TO BE A WIZARD KIT* .

Was he? I thought he went right into "Recruit the Forgemasters and call the Vampires, it's extermination time".
nah, like I recall a couple of scenes where he was looking at the fire, even if he wanted to go ahead and do that, he wouldn't instantly jump. Its painfully obvious Drac in the anime is under a severe case of depression and a suicidal one at that.

So he'd likely need time to even draft the plan.

Oh, I'm aware of that, but he was pretty "fire and brimstone" for a bit.

By the time season 2 hit, he just didn't really seem to care anymore.
