I don't want us to go in surrounded by an aura of restrained rage when we don't have all the details yet. Same reasons for not wanting to go in initially friendly. That said, once Mira finds out what's really going on, I'll be happy to let her unleash her charismatic fury or friendliness.

I'd like to be friendly, but being 100% honest? That's not what's needed. They don't need someone coming in and playing nice with them. They don't need someone doing the opposite, coming in and essentially threatening them.

What they need is someone to come in and say, "This is what you are asking for, show me why you need it."

Sometimes infrastructure monopolies are necessary due to matters of scale and practically. Such should always be run by those with actual incentive to keep service/product quality high and cost low. In most cases this means the state (costs down for their budget, quality up for, variously, military use, beuroctatic use, or bribing voters.)... Monopolies aren't inherently bad, just horribly abuseable if not correctly managed/regulated. (Needless to say, the Abuses are bad.)

I'm pretty sure "the set of all our resource extraction colonies" is not something for which monopoly is necessary for the sake of economies of scale.
 
I want nice relaxing combat interlude with Mira having fun shooting down ancient murderbots.
It's more relaxing than whole governing Virmire is!
Plus, being businesslike at that shapes our image.

If it was Salarian, at least she would die soon enough; volus live for quite a while IIRC, so...well, let's see.

I'd say we probably want to have it such that a company can definitely have a sizable dominance in a field, but not quite a monopoly... Always have a place open for that other option, thus meaning that competition is still around so the dominant company has to remain competitive/not get too corrupt/slack...

Or in other words, basically how things are right now probably, without the 'female' Volus finishing the take over of the remaining company...

Of course the option we fail at is the Lystheni option. They're like a magnet for failed rolls. Well, we can't fail rolls against the Lystheni if they no longer exist!

Monopolies can be tolerable, but we'd need a fair amount of oversight and governmental capacity to bring the hammer down or apply pressure as needed. It's something that either way needs to be considered and explored.

really, unless they are actively going to try and block our efforts, there is no reason not to go friendly.
