Taylor Hebert and Her Rather Sad Life [Worm/The Gamer/D&D3.5]

So here's how researching spells is going to work as a Wizard - you gain the usual amount on level up, and can research any 3.0, 3.5 or Pathfinder spells by using the following process:

  • $20,000 ($20 to 1 GP) per week in materials
  • Access to a quality laboratory/testing facility
  • 1 week per spell level
  • Spellcraft check of 10 + Spell level
Also, with a spellcraft check of 20 + Spell Level, you can reverse engineer parahuman powers as Arcane spells. Spellcraft DC to determine Spell Level for a parahuman power is 10 + Spell Level (Yes, that means you won't know the exact DC when you try to determine the spell level).

It is fine, except for the duration. Makes sorceror classes much better. Cost can be delt with eventually. Amost makes artificer better due to its rules for spell scroll creation.

The Nine would go through any PRT defenses (if such were even set) like a hot knife through butter. Our best bet against the Nine is to do a Scry-and-Die the instant this becomes available.
You think PRT secrecy would hold out against the Nine especially given how flimsy it would be given the radical changes Taylor underwhent?
Explain why Legend's husband and adopted son haven't been tortured to death yet. Explain why Sophia's family hasn't been killed by E88 yet.

Also, Coil's degree of infiltration is vastly overblown by fanon. In canon he had to have Undersiders storm PRT headquarters to gain access to S9 files. And yes, that's "had to" not "chose to", because even his critical assets (Dinah, Lisa) haven't seen those files before. Even in discarded timelines - that Coil didn't know about the end of the world proves that.

Really, PRT are competent. And for Eidolon 2.0 with instruction manuals (because, you know, D&D books are a thing) and potential access to true resurrection? Taylor won't be transferred to Alexandria's wards. Eidolon and/or Legend will relocate to Brockton Bay. Or wards will get new lunch lady with a very nice fedora.

Also, you know, budgets. For research. With Number Man firmly controlling the world's economy, metric tons of gold / diamonds and billions of dollars per week aren't at all out of the question, if needed. As are exotics like "ten thousand noble born virgins born on Friday 13th during a solar eclipse".

And also we have to remember - Uber and Leet will be after us. And those two aren't just jokers as indicated by fanon (really, the amount of fanon in this thread is staggering). They are dangerous and amoral.

Mostly dangerous to themselves, but you're not wrong. Uber is canonically a murderer (or something like that) by the end of the series, and Leet's tech can be nasty as hell when it actually works.

  1. Cauldron, more specifically PTV bullshit, to keep the very few villains with the courage to attack the family of a member of the Triumvirate from thinking of doing so.
  2. The Unwritten Rules. The E88 (and other BB gangs) keep to them.

1) Leaving aside how this would also apply to us, given our power (and, you know, future access to true resurrection, which brings back Hero), are you positing that Jack and Slaughterhouse 9 are aware of Cauldron? Or do you think that Cauldron actively stops them from attacking?

Jack is undefeated because he knows how to choose his battles, not because he's unbeatable. Note how S9 only visited Brockton Bay after Leviathan's attack, not before.
2) Only in as much as it benefits them really.

You are strongly underestimating PRT.

[X] Go straight to the PRT. She might not want to be involved with high school 2.0, but if anyone could help her have a secret identity it would be them.

PTV bullshit does not require the target (or the user) to be aware of what it is doing.

"Contessa releases a butterfly in Alaska which causes a storm that rains on Jack Slash in New Jersey just as he would have had the thought of kidnapping and torturing Legend's family. Being distracted by the rain he makes another plan. This was all part of a secondary path Contessa was using to keep all the people associated with Cauldron from mentally snapping and outing the secret."

I really like the comment about going to PRT being an option later even if we go home.

So yeah. Even if Taylor informs her dad about being a parahuman right now she can still join later.

My beef is exactly with the quest revolving around the exact same thing Taylor Heber Adventurer does, that is dealing with Ward bullshit. The updates are slow, the Wards prevent anything meaningfull happening, they even try to prevent Taylor from earning any money, and yeah they are un-canon like in that quest. @Yog is right. What he pointed out is exactly how the Wards operate in canon and it's slightly insane, but that's what Wildbow created and I'd give him only a 6 out of 10 for the worldbuilding effort. If I remember correctly Youth Guard only exists in word of god and not in canon, for example.

However, what matters is how the Questmaster perceives the Wards to operate. If he wants there to be a lot of PR oversight, then there will be. If he decides to keep things closer to canon, which will be: No constant power testing more or less, no training (Wards don't actually do mandatory training, only go on dangerous patrols which is mandatory).

If things are kept closer to canon, they yeah, shit will be going down actually. Also should be delicious is Taylor detects Sophia early. Why? Because Piggot will probably lock Sophia in juvie. If things are kept closer to fanon then they could go either way as Piggot has tendency in fanfics to somehow care about Sophia and would push for relocation rather than punishment.

Citations the f*ck needed. On Contessa running said path (despite, you know, Manton, Eidolon's issues, Echidna incident). On it working like that (no, Contessa can' f*cking do arbitrary stuff to achieve arbitrary effect. Jack won't always be distracted).

The far simpler solution is: Jack knows that if he tried something like this, he'll be hunted down and killed.

They're the rules straight from the DMG. Perhaps changing week to day would make more sense.

Day would be workable. Week would be if there was not any time pressure. Artificer can create new spell scrolls at $250 per level x caster level in comparison, and can do so quickly.

A wizard will generally know 4 spells per spell level, if they are unable to buy spells. Only a few more then sorcerer.

Maybe getting plane shift will let Taylor go shopping though.

Running such a path makes sense given what happened to Manton. It could very well have been instituted then. Remeber Fortuna got the equivatent of the power of a God of fate shoved into her skull without a user manual. Why would Jack not always be distracted? After all the human brain can do do very many permutations that are sensitive to initial conditions.

As for the Echidna incident, that included the Eidolon clone that was PTV-immune.

But say you are right and Jack "knows" he can't get past the PRT protections. Said belief could be PTV-induced established years ago.

How she perceives it to operate.

Lots of things generally accepted by Worm fans only exist via WoG, like Endbringers being tougher than planets, and compared to stuff like that Youth Guard makes entirely more sense. Piggot would love nothing more than to crush Sophia like a bug - I've no idea where the Piggott caring about Sophia, especially if she knows about her actions at Winslow, comes from. We never got that good a look at the Wards in canon, at least from the inside, so how they work is up to your magnanimous QM.

Which means they work however suits the story, more or less.

I have a question. What are the chances of being able to group invite danny and seeing if Taylor could help him create a character?

Maybe he could get a tanky healer type then.

Like how adding party members sometimes is in some games.

Err, I realise this now but... what actually won?

From the chapter I would say something like a half-red dragon, but what are the classes and the build?

Spell of note, for the future:

Arcana Form (Book of Eldritch Might): 9th Wizard, for 10 min./level you are incorporeal, immune to crits, have fly speed 100, can cast any of your prepared spells as many times as you want without losing them.

A couple things that are really bothering me about this current debate:

1: People ignoring the fact that somebody needs to do something about the 'scene of the crime' at Winslow. Leaving that for somebody else to find will result in questions being asked, and a non-zero chance of somebody figuring out Taylor has triggered. Important question being who finds the scene, and who else they show it to before the evidence is 'spoiled.'

2: Lots of people equating going and talking to the PRT now with joining the Wards.

So, I'm going to propose my own plan.

[X] Go home and talk to Danny. Be cautious along the route, attempting to avoid people spotting you coming to land at your home. Convince Danny that you are, in fact, yourself, and that heading back to the school to clean up the Trigger site promptly is important.
-[X] Once Danny is on board, call the Protectorate, and ask them to send one hero out to meet a newly-triggered flying cape in the sky near Winslow high school, with recording equipment. You don't mind if they have other heroes watching to make sure this isn't an ambush, but you don't want any more than one getting close to you right now, you have trust issues. Once they arrive, have them personally witness and record the scene of the crime. Tell them that what they do with the recording and witness testimony will be fairly key in determining how trustworthy you see them as being.

So, this plan will let us establish ourselves as a none-villain cape, while keeping our identity largely secret, and seeing what happens when we attempt to set the wheels of justice in motion. It also establishes us to the Protectorate/PRT as someone who will need to be courted if they want us on their side, rather than simply aggressively recruited.

This is the build that won:

[X] Plan Lordsfire.

It's a good balance of both ideas, and does help us in whatever scenario we try. The protectorate can try to put their best foot forward, Danny isn't excluded, and it starts us on our cape life low-key as possible outside of luck.

[X] Plan Lordsfire.

Makes sense IC even if we do know OOC that the PRT would offer up Sophia as human sacrifice if that is what it took to get a cape with Taylor's capabilities so evidence is not really that necessary.

[X] Plan Lordsfire

Also could we get this spell if we went cleric?
Wieldskill – Spell – D&D Tools
It gives us any skill we want for a single first level spell, and is great for filling skills which are only situational, or buffing one of our major skills.
