Capricorn 13-15th, 5 ALW: The mystery of the abandoned ship
With traveling likely within the future, you figured that you want to make sure everyone is accustomed to their chosen craft before Star Fox makes its way to somewhere less… hospitable. With all of the jobs selected, you quickly went to sleep...

[x] Freelance, Cargo and Persons Transport:
-[x] Corneria

You wasted no time getting started on your two jobs the next morning. The first of which is basically a supply run where the Great Fox will help transport supplies, cargo, and passengers from Corneria's surface to the surrounding space stations in orbit around the planet…

This job took up the entire day, but by the end of it, all of the supply runs have been done. There were not a lot of passengers, but there were a lot of cargo and supplies, including a significant amount of ammo for heavier weapons like missiles and Nova bombs, enough to even give a large fleet of cruisers and battleships some pause. You wonder why the larger amounts of munitions, but the passengers whom are bound to the space stations remained silent when you asked about them.

"If you ask me, I bet the Cornerian Space Fleet's gonna bust some Venomian heads soon!" Nichole commentated. "The presence of those apes and lizards is still thick around some areas and maybe the Cornerian Space Fleet is finally taking action? Who knows. I certainly don't."

"Ah well, at least the amount of money they are paying us for a simple job is quite generous, right Fox?"

[x] Freelance, Better Space Junk Salvaging:

"So," you started to ask. "Since you know where was the good salvage in the vicinity of Corneria for at least a couple of weeks by now, is there a reason why didn't you take them for yourself, Hannah? Surely no one is going to miss some space junk floating about, even though it is the good stuff."

The next day, you ordered the Great Fox to make its way to the location Hannah pointed out where the best salvage was floating about. You had gathered everyone in the hangers where you briefly explained why Star Fox is out here: to gather salvage and to make sure everyone becomes accustomed to their spacecraft before you all leave for more hostile territory. Few questions were asked and you answered them all quickly. However, there was a question that was lingering in your mind. That question was the one that you have just asked.

"That is true," Hannah replied. "And I was actually meaning to go back and to take some salvage myself. That is, as soon as I got myself a nice cargo ship to drag back the goods with me. However, that hangar accident kind of derailed my plans, so I have decided to wait on the salvage and the cargo ship until I get a shiny new fighter first.

Of course, it is a moot point right now, since I am with you guys for the time being and you have a ship that can carry all of the salvage without a problem…"

"I see," you replied. "Anyway, back on track. Like I said before, everyone will get into a ship and fly around and collect salvage. Try to collect the choice bits; our cargo space is limited and we do not have enough room to waste on junk…"

The briefing went on for about five more minutes as you discussed various points and items of interest. Soon afterward, everyone, including yourself, got into their spacecraft and took off to collect salvage, with the Bumblebees following right behind you all...

Hannah's right about one thing: there is indeed a lot of salvage and supplies to pick up from the wreckage and debris. So far, you all collected quite a haul: scrap metal of decent quality, life support supplies, and a small pile of electronic parts for starship components and modules.

Among the salvage that was collected was a drone fighter. This is somewhat odd to you since the drone is a relatively recent model and it looks like in perfect shape, almost brand new. You wonder where did it come from. Made there was combat recently in this area and this drone fell out of a hanger somewhere? Who knows. You continued to wonder as you have it sent to the hangar for servicing and preparations for immediate combat should it occur.

The salvaging mission continues for a couple of hours more as your pile of harvested gains continued to pile higher. Even more scrap metal was added to the pile, along with more life support supplies and electronics parts. However, adding to the mystery of the lost drone was the fact that the team managed to recover an intact engine module and a weapons module, both that seemed to come from a fighter of a relatively modern design, too modern to be from the Lylat Wars. You wondered what has happened here in the debris field as you had the latest batch of harvested gains hauled off to the cargo holds.

As you watched as the reclaimed salvage was stored away, the Great Fox's intercom sprang to life.

"Fox," ROB announced. "Victoria has found something that requires you attention in the science lab. Please go to the lab immediately."

You figured that it must be something quite important that requires your presence as you jogged to the science lab. The doors to the lab opened up as you walked in. Victoria turned around to look at you as well.

"What is the matter, Victoria?" you asked her.

"Well," she started to explain. "So, I was playing around with the equipment here like you would have wanted, just to get used to the instruments for the next time we get into a fight. But when I start playing around with the cloaking detection systems, I gotten this!"

She then then the monitor towards you and you looked at the screen…

It seems that the detection equipment was detecting something large right next to the Great Fox. The problem was that while you are outside the Great Fox in the Arwing, you did not see anything.

"I have analyzed the data that Victoria has given to me," ROB started to explain. "Data from the scans suggests a large cargo ship with a working cloaking device is present in this location. The cargo ship is intact and the cargo should be intact as well. The hangers of this ship is large enough for the Great Fox to dock without the use of a shuttle, an abnormality of ships of this classification. However, the scans suggested that the cargo ship's engines have been damaged beyond the repair skills of the crew and thus the ship has been abandoned, for preliminary scans did not detect any life present on-board. The ship currently does not match any known model within the common ship database nor does it bear any identification data at all. The ship not even have a registered name."

"So, is she a smuggling ship?" you asked.

"Likely," ROB responded. "But uncertain until physical inspections are conducted."

You sighed. "Alright, I guess I know what should be our final activity in this area for now. ROB, have all of our units outside the ship recalled and the pilots stand ready to board this abandoned cloaked ship. Also, have the troopers get ready for boarding action as well. Victoria, continue to monitor the area for other surprises or events."

Victoria nodded. "Yes sir, Fox!"

You smiled back as you readied yourself to lead the boarding party into this abandoned ship. Whatever it is, this venture here is starting to prove profitable. However, you wonder if you are getting in over your head. After all, an unusually largo and cloaked cargo ship without any identity and no history to the best of your knowledge? Sounds like either a trap or worse. Either way, you will not know until you find out...

(Critical Roll: Unknown Abandoned, Damaged, and Cloaked Large Cargo Ship Found, loot yield greatly increased for rest of the rolls)

It took ten minutes for all of your deployed spacecraft to dock back into the hangars. It took another ten minutes for the Great Fox to maneuver and dock with the unknown abandoned ship. With that time, you briefed all of your assembled personnel about the situation and your plan.

The plan is simple: as soon as the Great Fox docks, Victoria will use the on-board lab's equipment to thoroughly scan for any living contacts. As soon as the scans are completed and the results come back, yourself, all three troopers, and any pilot volunteers will depart from the Great Fox and secure the area on foot. The pilots who volunteered were Maxine and Hannah. After you all secured the area, the rest of the crew will start carrying back whatever abandoned cargo they can find. ROB will also be deploying the Bumblebees to aid in carrying the cargo back to the ship, especially the heavier ones. Once enough salvage and cargo is collected, everyone is to go back to the Great Fox and you all will return to Corneria, the job being completed.

A simple plan, with lots of room for error should it occur. You hope that they will not occur, however, for you do not want anything bad to happen to your crew on your watch.

You waited with your laser pistol in your hands as Victoria got to work. While only minutes has passed, they felt like hours as you wait. Afterall, the calm before a possible storm is always the most agonizing period of time...

"Attention," ROB announced. "Victoria is finished with the scanning procedure. No life signs detected."

You sighed in relief as a part of the stress that hangs on your shoulders was lifted.

"Right," you announced. "It is time to commence with the second part. Baker, you are squad leader. You will lead Hills and Kevin to secure the starboard end of the ship. Hannah, Maxine. Since the two of you volunteered for this operation, the two of you will come with me as we secure the port side of the ship. The two of you will cover my flanks as I take point."

The three troopers saluted as they readied their laser rifles.

"Yes, Sir!" They said as the three of them moved down the ramp and moved to secure their half of the ship.

You then turned to Maxine and Hannah. They both nodded as the three of you moved to secure the other half of the ship…

It took only ten minutes for the troopers to report no contacts or hostiles on their end. However, they did found what looks like a hangar. They reported that were some space-craft still docked in there and they still look to be in good shape. With that note, you ordered the squad to send one of the troopers back to the the Great Fox to escort Lelina and Nichole to the space-craft so the two pilots can fly them back to the Great Fox's hangar...

Within the same amount of time that the troopers needed to secure their half of the ship, yourself, Maxine and Hannah managed to secure your half. Again, there were no living contacts nor hostiles, just a lot of cargo that is still intact. There is one thing that Maxine managed to find, however…

"Fox," she called out to you as she filled with a terminal at your command. "I think I found something important. It looks like the ship's log of some sort."

"That's great, Maxine," you replied. "Here, move over please so I can read it."

Maxine nodded as she moved out of the way. You started to read the log as Maxine and Hannah looked on from behind…

It looks like the log was regularly purged of any entries that were too old. Indeed, the log only goes back a few days at most. Most of these entries were unsigned and they did not give any clues of who owned the ship nor who were the crew members.

However, the last few entries were interesting...

[3 days ago]: All systems are normal. Nothing interest of note to report…

[2 days ago]: Sudden Catastrophic Engine Damage occurred. Cause Unknown. Engine is beyond repair without replacement system. All hands in the engine area lost.

[1 day ago]: Captain ordered all hands to abandon ship. All personnel will board the spacecraft in hangar immediately. All personnel are told to abandoned any personal items and all cargo, since the personnel will return to ship once help from employer was summoned.

"Well, this is interesting," Hannah spoke up. "A mysterious ship with a mysterious crew suddenly have a mysterious explosion. I would say that someone was doing something with the engines that they were not supposed to be doing, but without additional data or someone we could talk to, I have no idea what has caused the explosion. Could be anything at this point…"

"Regardless," you declared. "It seems that the original owners of this vessel might be coming back soon, so I am ordering everyone to start loading the Great Fox with as much cargo as they can carry and then we get out of here before we have unwanted company. I did see a mobile lifter in the docking area where the Great Fox was docked, so we can use it to load up her."

Hannah and Maxine nodded. With that statement, the actual salvaging operation has begun...

The nameless ship is quite loaded with cargo! Like the logs said, the crew that abandoned the ship also have abandoned all of the goods that they are carrying. Your eyes widen with the mountain of supplies you managed to take from the cargo ship! Apparently, there were some personal computers and accessories that was gained from the ship too. You could only wonder what they are for...

(10 Units of Consumer Computers gained)

In addition, there were a lot of new but generic form-fitting flight suits that you all have found from the cargo ships. With several crates worth, this is enough to outfit a good sized army or pilots and troopers. However, they do not have any logos or designs on them, nor do they come in colors that might identify them to a known group; just generic white, gray, black, and indigo-blue suits of a one-size-fits-all design and cut.

You wonder what are these for as you have them delivered to the cargo hold.

(10 Units of Flight Suits gained)

1D100 => 22

As the flight suits were hauled off to the cargo hold, you hear the intercom turn on.

"Fox," ROB spoke. "Lelina and Nichole has arrived back into the hanger with the retrieved space-craft."

You smiled as you jogged to the hanger, eager to see what the two of them have gotten…

And you were not disappointed. First of all, it seemed that there was quite a few drone fighters that was retrieved. At this point, you have sufficient numbers of them that they should start becoming effective in combat…

(14 Dagger-class Small Fighter Drones gained!)

The other thing that was retrieved was more valuable.

You stared in amazement at the fighter before you. You wonder how come and why this cargo-ship was carrying around an example of modern Cornerian small-craft technology. This mystery deepens as you had Lelina, Nichole, and ROB prepare her and the drones for immediate combat should it occur…

(1 Cornerian Standard Defense Fighter, Mk.2 gained!)

1D100 => 90

As you were walking back to the cargo hold to check on how is the cargo doing, you saw Maxine run up to you. It seems like she was in a hurry.

"Fox! Hannah, the troopers, and I found something that you should see! Please come quickly!"

As the two of you ran outside of the Great Fox and into the cargo ship, Maxine explained what has happened. Apparently, as the troopers, Hannah, and Maxine were loading cargo, they found a hidden compartment that was not within the original plans of the cargo ship that you have taken from the ship's logs. They quickly decide among themselves to investigate. A few blasts of a laser rifle later, they successfully breached the room and investigated inside. What they found was something that you should see.

And, after about five minutes of fast running, you saw the thing that they wanted to show you...

From the outside it looks like a blue-ish green crystal. However, every instant in your body sense a large amount of power stored in the crystal. What is that power is, you do not know, but you get the feeling that you should not leave it here for anyone else to find.

And it seemed that everyone else felt the power too...

"Sir," Baker spoke up, waking you out of your train of thought. "What are your orders?"

"Move this crystal into the cargo hold," you responded. "We can not leave it here like this for someone else to find. Who knows what it could do in the wrong hands."

"Yes, sir!"

Within a short amount of time, the crystal is safely aboard the Great Fox, awaiting its further fate…

(Unknown Mysterious Crystal gained!)

In all, you realized that Star Fox have spent quite a bit of time in the cargo ship, so it is about time you all leave and head to Corneria for rest…

But not before taking one last valuable item. With the Bumblebees, you had ROB carefully remove the cargo ship's cloaking device and have it stored away within the Great Fox's hold. You are pretty sure that there will be a use for the device, even if all you might do with it is to sell it…

Soon enough, you felt a change in atmosphere as the Bumblebees finally removed the cloaking device. A few minutes later, the drones stored the device in the Great Fox's significantly fuller cargo-hold.

(1 Cloaking Device module gained!)

With the salvaging mission complete, the Great Fox detaches from the now uncloaked and emptied out nameless ship and moves out of the debris field quickly and before anyone could notice.

Or, you hope that no one noticed.

Within a couple of hours, the Great Fox touches down on Corneria. Your teammates are quite tired but happy with the haul they have gotten, a sure sign that the winds of fortune is in the team's favor. One of them, you suspected to be Nichole, suggested a pizza party to celebrate. You allowed them to organize it once they make it clear that the funds for the pizza is not coming out of Star Fox's general funds and that you have gave them your topping choice...

"Pineapple on the pizza? I can understand mushrooms and meatballs, but why a fruit?"

As the pizza is being ordered, you decided to take care a few more items of business as you looked through the list of pilots and troopers to hire and ships to buy...

=====
I am back from the vacation. And since this is the first post back, that supposed battle was cancelled since I still need to get back into the swing of things. Rejoice.

Rejoicing is commencing!

Hrm, the mkII has comparable stats to the 3 ships we got before.. but only one attack, as opposed to two. Still worth keeping for a while. If more violence breaks out, the price should rise.

Still rejoicing!

[X] Buy and sell Nothing.

And a question: aren't the prices to upgrade a fighter kinda high? 6k for one upgrade?

We don't have space for more than one light ship (13/14 filled with ships found). So don't even dare think of buying another fighter when we're lacking in pilots already. We save that space for a shuttle when we decide to get one.

Anyway, Leliana spent a mission ina new ship now, so she shoudl get the controls now. We REALLY need to move elsewhere for new hiring prospects. Because it's either generics or moving for better pilots to fill our remaining fighters.

Agreed. Although I don't think we're ready to head to someplace like Macbeth, I do think we should clear out that pirate nest and get contacts on that one station in the metro asteroid field that Hannah mentioned. Hopefully we'll find a decent pilot or two.

I think we should put the fighter we just got up for sale, we have better fighters that don't have pilots currently. Also do we want to sell any of the supplies?

Before we put any fighter up for sale, we have junk to check first.

@dnzrx
Any of the misc stuff Victoria can use to tinker with? I mean, assuming she need it to try stuff.

Which makes me wonder, are there science projects to run?

More to the point, we don't need money badly right now. And it is likely that sooner or later something will happen that drives the cost of gear up...

Also, since squads are 4 people, we can keep it unless we get something better later.

IIRC, we can make use of some of the stuff if we get the basic refinery upgrade... but that means we couldn't get other upgrades.

So we really need either a deal with a factory or another ship with that on if we want that. Doesn,t mean science cannot use it either, but still.

However, I did a quick count and we're already over 80/120 space filled, with no idea how big that crystal is either. If we're around 100/120 filled, I'll put my foot down and insist we sell some things. Things like scrap metal will be found by the truckload after fights anyway.

I want to put up the Cornerian fighter as the Cloud Hawks we have are better and I think the gunboat is as well, and our second squad would be the three Cloud Hawks and the Gunboat. Plus we are running low on hanger space (and now wishing we had maxed all options at the beginning of the quest).

Though it will be easier once the main page is updated so we can see what we have.

Also I am hoping we run into additional named pilot and trooper canidates soon.

And missed commenting the first time but Victoria is showing why science is a good idea

Well, it is true that the Cornerian Fighter has very short range compared to just short... Still, it doesn't hurt to have a spare fighters just in case and this one we got for free.

Granted, if we have trouble finding pilots anyway, it's not going to be worth holding on to it. But right now, it's not necessary to sell.

I can get behind liquidating some of the scraps we collected. I do believe that we should keep the fighter and assorted drones we found though.

Finding more pilots will be a good thing, but should be put off until we see a better selection. Also, that named trooper is seriously expensive! We would be better off hiring modesty skilled personnel and training them up to a higher standard.

We have two Cloud Hawks without pilots and we are running out of hanger space, and we will be out of hanger space if we want to get a boarding shuttle.

How I view our squads:
Squad Fox;
4 Ar-wings

Second Squad:
3 Cloud Hawk
1 Orbital Gunboat

And for the Gunboat if we get a chance to get another Cloud Hawk or better fighter I would replace that. However the Conerian fighter is worse than the gunboat which we can get right now as the Conerian fighter has 1 attack and very short range compared to the short range and multiple attacks of the gunboat and Cloud Hawk

The gunboat's for a defensive purpose, not offensive. I would rather have the Corvette join the Hawks in a squad.

For now, in case of an emergency, a generic could always jump in and help the gunboat on the defense.

And still waiting for an answer about what the stuff we found before I vote, dnzrx.

The way I see it, Star Fox is organized in the following method

Capital Ships

Great Fox (Dreadnought-class Cruiser)

Fighters and Other Small Craft

1st Squadron (Squadrons consist of two or more Flights, Fox is commanding the squadron and his flight at the same time)

1st Flight (Fighter)
4 x Arwing (Fox, Hannah, Nichole, Maxine)

2nd Flight (Mixed)*
1 x Cloud Hawk (Leliana)
1 x Gunship (Rover)

3rd Flight (Mixed)#
1 x Conerian Mk II (Vacant)
2 x Cloud Hawk (Vacant, Vacant)
1 x Corvette (Vacant)

*=Currently under-strength and used to defend the Great Fox
#=Currently a paper formation and used for bureaucratic purposes to organize the vacant ships held in reserve

Anyway, still would like answer, but nothign urgent, really, so...

[X] Buy and sell Nothing.

If there's nothing we can do with the stuff as it is however, we really need to think of selling some of it.

[X] Put Conerian MK II up for sale

Basically looking for a buyer as it is the worst manned ship we have. As I have said I want something along the line of a Cloud Hawk or better for backup and the Conerian MKII just does't cut it. Also the hanger is almost full so move it out so if our next assignment we recover a craft we have room.

Rejoicing is commencing!

And a question: aren't the prices to upgrade a fighter kinda high? 6k for one upgrade?
Yeah, I made them a bit arbitrary. I will think about this more and come back to you. That means the latest post might be updated a little bit.

Out of curiosity, why not Macbeth? Just asking.

Yes, she can tinker with some of the looted materials, parts, and modules in the basic lab. Those will be highlighted in the science projects side missions that will be posted in the next mission selection post.

Note that sometimes, tinkering with such things might result in breaking such things into components that are worth less than the original. Consider it as your cost of doing R&D. Although, if you purchase more upgrades to the lab, then there will be more options for R&D as well as there is a chance that you might not lose said materials or components during research.

Starting very soon, there will be the option to send looted materials and parts to a local factory and have them turn them into space-craft, ammo, parts, upgrades, or other things for a small fee (to cover labor costs).

A few key points to this system:

1.) The actual object to be created will dictate how much material and money will be consumed.
2.) Different locations will offer different choices on the end product. For example, Cornerian factories will make Cornerian space-craft as a rule of thumb while ones on Macbeth will make Macbeth designs...

The crystal takes up one cargo space unit. The cloaking device takes up more. I will update the index with the new information once as soon as possible. Either way, the cargo bay is getting full.

If there are any more questions on the results or anything, please ask.

Out of curiosity, why not Macbeth? Just asking.

Because Macbeth is home to a large number of rival mega-corps with lots of cash and access to advanced technology. Naturally they'd have a large number of merc organizations similar or larger than our own on their payroll. I feel that we aren't ready to tangle with foes that are capable of threatening them.

In a perfect world I'd like to have at least a couple of escorts and all of our ships manned before we go there.

Except the Cornerian market is kinda dry of pilot and better jobs... We really should consider escort jobs to others areas.
