Slivers Adrift in Infinity [MTG/RWBY]

Right. But also not to use it. So what's the point?
He's clearly possessive about it. It's like finding out that one of your not-quite-friend friends has crashed in your pad and is staying. Even if you say he can crash there for a while as long as he doesn't wreck the place... there's still tension that can be resolved by him moving out, and which builds as long as you're forced to share the space.
Nah it's more like if you have given a friend a key to your place so he can crash there if something happens, but he got it on the condition that he promises only to use it without asking as a last resort.

Using it without asking would be like crashing at your place without asking, something you are not normally okay with, but in certain conditions, such as if he was soaked to the bone and couldn't get into his own place, you would be okay with him crashing there for a night without asking, if you were out of town and so he couldn't ask first.

Us having a manabond to Beacon is having the key, us using it without asking would be rude and might inconvenience Ospin a lot, since then he can't use it, so that should only be done in a major emergency, but having the bond and not using it actually prove that he can trust us a little.

Hallo! So I'm having some trouble writing the update - social stuff isn't really my forte. Korkator had suggested that I split it up into multiple smaller updates without votes. Would people be interested in that? Alternatively, it might be better to leave this and start a new quest - I went into this one without really thinking the mechanics out and kinda made a hash of things. :/ I have since had an idea for using GURPS for mechanics that I think would actually work very well. I could make another sliver quest with it, or maybe make a non sliver quest - we have had a fair number of sliver quests lately.

Hmm, fair enough. I'll see about using korkator's suggestion, then.

You know if you are having trouble with the social stuff why not get someone to help you write those sections? Afterall Co-QM's are a thing. Also:
Noooooooo I want the cute giant bladesnakequest to continue.
I agree and while I don't want to feel like I'm guilt tripping you, I'd be super sad if cute giant bladesnakequest ended.

Would also prefer if this quest continued.

2.3.2: Promising Research
[X] Plan Promising Research, Interrogating a General, and Practical Roles.
-[X] Be frank but polite. Ozpin introduced you, and as a teacher and caretaker of the students at your hive, he must be confident this wont go badly.
--[X] Other than it being at least one sliver, you don't actually know anything about exactly what you came from— or at least, not yet.
--[X] You came here as an egg, so all the things you've remembered about your people are what the researchers call "genetic memory", and calling on that memory requires meditation and focus... and, well, you've been too busy with other things to focus on the answers to his particular question.
--[X] If Ozpin wishes, you could try working on those details of your origin in the coming month, as something of a school assignment, but for now you don't have a solid answer for him. Sorry.
---[X] If he likes, you can repeat what you've already said to the researches and Ozpin, however little it is. (Including stuff like the races that aren't here most of the researches dismissed.)

-[X] Now that you've complied with the question as best you could, on with the less polite things;
--[X] So,
what was so important about this that you needed to question me at gunpoint? Because if it's that important, then it's also important enough for me to know, as a potential threat to my children and my friends.

You stare at Ironwood in surprise. "I have no real memory of how I came to be - I was brought here as an egg, after all. My first memory is of hatching and meeting Ruby. I have managed to access some disjointed genetic memories, but they aren't very informative on this topic. They tell me a fair bit about my species, but not anything about myself in specific. I can try and search them for that, if you like? And of course, I can tell you what I do know."

Ozpin nods politely at you. " Thank you, Drei, any additional information you can dig up would be worthwhile. I've already filled Ironwood in on everything we do know."

Ironwood steps forward. "Ozpin, we can't simply take this creature at it's word. According to the intel my agents managed to retrieve, it's been programmed to deceive us, to deceive itself even. It could turn on us at any time without even knowing it's going to."

At this point, you decide enough is enough and interrupt. "What was so important about this that you needed to question me at gunpoint? Because if it's that important, then it's also important enough for me to know, as a potential threat to my children and my friends."

Ozpin and Ironwood look at each other for a moment, and when they turn back to you Ozpin looks the slightest bit guilty, though Ironwood is as stoic as ever. "Very well then," Ozpin replies, "Let us fill you in on the situation. Please keep this to yourself however, as it would cause nothing but trouble if it became widely known. To begin with, what do you know of religion?"

To be continued... (No votes right now.)

Oh my, I didn't think we'd get to know about all this stuff so early on. Should I start listening to roundabout?

Or , new flash, your intel has been compromised and Bitch doesn't want you to trust me cause she knows I'm gonna go straight up gangsta and bust her when I get rolling.

Yknow with the rate of expansion of slivers, in couple of years we will totally be what amounts to a sovereign nation, we will go and spread into grim lands and with so many of us and with how fast we adapt it might be possible.

When that day comes, we will remember this, the general of Atlas holding us at gunpoint. Sorry Atlas, we have some bad experiences with you, no allies and resources for you.

2.3.3: Interrogating a General
--[X] So, what was so important about this that you needed to question me at gunpoint? Because if it's that important, then it's also important enough for me to know, as a potential threat to my children and my friends.
---[X] If he deflects on the basis of you not really answering his question or it's classified, make it clear that— once you have it— him getting the information he wants is dependent on you getting commensurate information on this enemy.
----[X] Include another hint or two that he might not ever be getting this information if Ozpin doesn't explicitly request that you collect it. This 'diplomacy' is made possible by the goodwill that Ozpin has earned, not by Ironwood's rudeness.

-[X] The conversation with Ozpin is intended to be about straightforward, simple practicalities. Stuff your hive will be doing in the next quarter and semester, focusing on two things;
--[X] Food preservation technology; you know the humans have many different varieties of it, and you'd like to get in touch with someone who knows them well enough to figure out the best ones for your hive.
--[X] Roles your hive members can take in human society in return for more consistent aid (money?); you'd like ideas, recommendations of specific places to apply those ideas, and contacts to those places, if at all possible.
---[X] You hope that once you have a good 'proof of concept' agreement working it will be easier to expand without needing to ask for help.

-[X] Also, while you're here, have you heard of any more suspicious activity like those figures reported trying to sneak onto hive grounds? Similar attempts on school grounds, in particular.

You quirk your head. "Religion? Practically nothing. I remember having my aura unlocked, does that count?"

Ozpin shakes his head. "Let me tell you a story. It's a creation myth. We don't know exactly how much is accurate, but we do know that much of it is. According to the myth, there were two gods - a god of light, and a god of darkness. The god of light created life, beauty, and all things good and beautiful. The god of darkness hated these things and sought to destroy them. He wrought wildfires, famine, floods - everything he could to destroy his brothers creations. But even so, life always returned. So he wrought his own creation - a sort of anti life. The creatures of Grimm. But even then, life still flourished. Finally, the two brothers tired of their war, and they agreed to create one last entity together - mankind. Capable of both creation and destruction. After that, the two agreed to step back and leave the world to their creations."

Ironwood nods. "That's where we come in. The grimm aren't just mindless creatures of destruction - they have intelligence of their own, and furthermore, a leader. We call her Salem."

Ozpin frowns. "Not much is known about her, but she's powerful and malevolent. We try to keep this quiet, so as not to cause a panic. The intelligence we'd acquired paints you as being an agent of Salem - supposedly sent here to infiltrate our ranks and breed an army for the destruction of Vale right under our noses."

Ironwood turns to Ozpin. "Supposedly? Three of my agents lost their lives getting that information! The details that came along with it have helped us stop dozens of her operations and improved our position immensely! You can't be suggesting that it's fake!"

Ozpin presses his glasses back on his nose and turns to peer at Ironwood. "Can't I? For all that it's helped us, it hasn't given us any information on her true strategy, only unimportant side details - the kind that might readily be sacrificed to accomplish her goals..."

Ironwood looks deeply concerned by this statement. "What goals? What could justify such a sacrifice? That must have set her operations back by months, if not years!"

Ozpin nods in your direction. "Perhaps she saw a new player on the field and decided to act against them. Or perhaps she's entering her endgame, and such things are no longer valuable to her, leaving them with no purpose but to be sacrificed. Consider, as well, we've intercepted numerous attempts by mysterious cloaked figures to approach Drei here - under cover of darkness and without being spotted. Why would Salem be attempting to sneak up on her own plant?"

Ironwood looks about. "You think she was afraid enough of the slivers to spend so many resources drawing my forces here on the off chance she could maneuver us into fighting each other? That seems like entirely too much of a long shot."

Ozpin nods grimly. "Indeed. Knowing our adversary, I suspect there's more to it."

Ironwood's concerned look returns. "I'll sweep the fleet, check for anything funny. In the meantime, though, we should keep a watch on Drei here. Just in case."

Ozpin shakes his head. "She's already next to an academy filled with some of the best hunters and students in the kingdom. That should be plenty sufficient. I suggest you keep your army far enough away that we don't have to worry about any of Salems tricks."

Ironwood looks rather offended at that. "You think Salem could infiltrate my army?"

"Perhaps, perhaps not. But I know she's up to something, and I'd rather not be taken by surprise."

Ironwood grimaces. "I'll take extra precautions."

(Still one more update to go before voting resumes. Hold on tight folks.)

-[X] "You have been honest with us. WE will be Honest with you. What you consider your Universe, the entirety of creation to you, is that in truth a silver of All That Is, called a Plane. Individuals that can travel Planes are called Planeswalkers, individuals of great Power. Many of them could crush Salem in moments. If you wonder why they do not intervene here, they are not omniscient or omnipotent. There are an infinite number of Planes. Silvers are Unique as a Race. Slivers on rare occasions can migrate to to new Planes, via single eggs. We are an aspect of Evolution. We can adapt to Anything. Literally, ANYTHING. In truth you are fortunate to have Someone as Great as Ruby found us. The reason being is that She Made Us Family. She Made Humanity, Including Fanus, FAMILY."

Uh, this doesn't even make any sense, at all. Drei doesn't even know this IC and no one even asked.

You call Grimm endless, but they have nothing on Slivers once they start ramping up.

Still working on the next update. In the meantime, though, I've been working on the mechanics for my next quest. Anyone care for a preview?

[x] Full Disclosure
"She is right to fear us.
Your Gods may have created the Grimm. But they did not create me. I don't know how I got here, to this world, but I know there is nothing here of my kind. I could feel them if there were. Whatever I am, I am an outsider to your story.
The Grimm may be mighty, but they're still to some extent balanced against your strength. If it were otherwise, you would all be long dead. But if you could hold out against the Grimm, I know that I could destroy them utterly.
I have seen the way you grow, the way you learn. You're so slow, so inefficient. It must take decades for one of your children to grow to a point where they can help.
Our children grow up in months, and we share our skills and knowledge freely. We are united in one will, one mind. We do not waste resources on internal squabbles.
You must understand - I could cover this world in my kin. Each of our powers shared and amplified, there are none who could stand against our might!
The only place we could possibly be stopped is here, and now, before we can grow beyond your - or her - control.
Does this explain to you, why this Salem would desperately want you to be our enemy?"

The long-term thrust of our explanation should be that we, as opposed to the Grimm, can be negotiated with. We're not bad people, we're just an incredibly scary invasive lifeform. You know, like the Grimm. But not genocidal. You know, unlike the Grimm. The point should be "a world overrun by Slivers is a definitive improvement over your status quo."
