"Do you want to go visit Maiko-chan?" You suggest. "It's pretty far, but we should be able to walk there... unless you need some time to rest first?" It's only polite to ask. He just got here, after all.
"I'm fine." Given his choice of words, you're inclined to disbelieve him, but maybe you should take your chances on this. If only to try and remind yourself that people can say those words honestly. Just usually not the people you spend time with. "We... haven't seen Maiko-chan in a while, have we?" Well, given how that's sort of the point to this whole thing...
"That's why I'm asking." You don't think he actually needs to be told this, but it's best to be safe, right?
"Then we should go." He stands up, dislodging Morgana from his lap. You instinctively tune out the feline's complaints. He should know by now that, when Akira says he's going somewhere, that means he's not going to be sitting down for much longer. This has happened eight times already. "Can't let her forget about us, right?"
Honestly, you don't think you'll ever have to worry about that, if only because you're sure magic is pretty memorable to someone who doesn't live with it.
So long as there's nothing actively messing with them... or it's not the amnesia patient of the decade.
Also, because being forgotten over the course of a month by someone you've been friends with for well over a year would be pretty sad. So you're not even going to consider the possibility. Especially not from someone as nice as Maiko.
"Let's get going, then." Before your cat forgets that clear displays of magic would probably be destructive, disruptive, and completely unnecessary.
Or before he stops caring. I don't actually know which one's more likely to come first.
He actually tries following you to the door, before Koromaru urges him away to play. Odds are, he'll have forgotten all about this by the time you come back this afternoon.
If only because, if he doesn't behave well, he has no chance of successfully convincing Mitsuru-san to get him sushi.
Maiko's parents aren't home when you reach her apartment, but she doesn't seem to mind that at all. "They haven't been around that much anymore," She admits, which makes you sort of regret ignoring her for the whole break. "They make sure to leave food and stuff, but... How have you two been?" You don't think you've ever seen her so quick to change the subject.
"Akira-san's been spending the break at the dorms, sort of." You aren't sure what the best way to describe this would be without Maiko deciding to idolize Mitsuru-san for one reason or another, and that's the kind of thing you'd like to avoid no matter what. "Mostly because nobody's around to tell him not to..."
"Their supervisor isn't very good at his job," Akira pitches in. "He hasn't showed up at all."
And he doesn't even know about the worst of it...
You decide to not mention the fact that your dorm seems to have collectively decided that said supervisor is their enemy, or that Ikutsuki-san has done absolutely nothing to dispel this image. To the point where he sometimes seems disappointed that the place hasn't devolved into violence while he was gone.
There's probably something wrong with him. You just don't want to get close enough to figure out what it is.
Maiko is beginning to look concerned. Given some of the things you've told her about the people you're living with, it's hard to blame her. Sometimes even you're surprised that things are still going relatively well.
"The dorm's also getting a new transfer student next week," You add, suddenly just as quick to change the subject as Maiko was earlier. "He'll be coming in the day before school starts... for some reason." That just seems like it's asking for trouble to happen. Especially given that you don't exactly have a limit on when people can move in.
I think it might just be 'as soon as they can get someone to sign the papers.' Makes as much sense as anything else.
Well... you don't think you do. It's not like there's any real standards for anything else, they let an elementary school student move in, it's officially known that you have a dog, and Shinjiro-san didn't even go to school for a while.
But, again, this probably isn't something you should mention to your friends if you don't want them to be concerned. More than they already are.
It's probably a lost cause, at this point, but that isn't going to stop you from trying.
You think you might need a distraction from this conversation. Just a bit.
[ ] So, you've introduced Akira to television...
[ ] Mitsuru-san's helping you publish a book. This feels like something you should mention.
[ ] If there's a safe place for it, you could try giving an impromptu magic show...
[ ] Does she have another puzzle you could do? With three of you, it might go faster! (+Diligence)
