As much as you now understand why Akira has never let you know where he lives, you'd rather Mitsuru-san not freeze the building over. Among other things, there are other people living here.
Also, you think you might get in trouble if people show up frozen into ice blocks, but that's less important. You need to be distracting. "So... is Akira-san here?" You ask, hoping that you've spoken up in time to avoid the blizzard that you know is coming. "I just want to talk to him..." You consider trying to look innocent, before deciding that it probably wouldn't change anything if you did.
If this man is willing to think the worst of the quietest kid you know, you can't imagine him taking away any impressions of you aside from what he wants to see.
Again, his gaze is on you, and that might be better than before. The air temperature is currently only slightly below freezing.
"And what would you have to talk about? School?" You think about how half of the past year has had you storing an extra backpack under your bed, for reasons that were never fully explained but still seemed important enough to keep going along with. "I'm not sure what good that would do for you. He never actually does his work or anything."
And at what point did that make starvation seem like a reasonable course of action?
You'd be a lot more likely to believe that if you didn't work together with him on said work. Or spend a lot of time hiding it, and then mitigating the consequences.
But something tells you that a clever retort is only going to serve to get both you and Akira in trouble, and that's the last thing you want to do right now.
Even if it is really tempting.
Still, before things can escalate past the point of no return, Akira shows up at the door. "Ken-senpai? Kirijo-san? What are you two doing here?" His father glances at him, and he flinches away.
"I wanted to see you," You say, because that really should have been obvious. "Akira-san, you can't just disappear every time there's a break from school. It makes the rest of us worry."
You hadn't thought much of it last year, but you didn't know him all that well last year, either. As it is, you're a bit less willing to let him just spend a month on his own.
Honestly, I'd be worried if he were on his own for more than a week. Especially if he never leaves the apartment.
Things would be so much easier if Lavenza were still around...
"I-I guess so." He's not really looking you in the eye, sort of like when you'd just spend time in the library together. At least there's a plausible cause of fear present at the moment, even if you'd rather there weren't. "Is- Is Maiko-chan upset, too?"
You shrug. "I think she's still busy with cram school." Even though she's perfectly smart without it. "But she seems to be enjoying the break, at the moment."
"...So you actually do know each other." You remind yourself once again that there are better reasons to show off magic than to blast someone with it. Even if you're positive by now that he deserves it.
The cold worsens. "Are you saying that Ken-kun would lie about this sort of thing? Or that I would?" You aren't entirely sure what the answer is she's looking for, but something tells you that the man is going to give her the wrong one.
Still, no reason to be around for it. "Come on," You gesture to Akira. "Let's go." He hurries to follow you, which is really for the best. You don't want him to get caught in the crossfire of whatever comes next.
"Is it... going to be all right?" Your friend asks quietly as you hurry downstairs from where your respective guardians are having their conversation.
At the very least, she's the closest thing we have to an actual authority figure. Ikutsuki-san certainly isn't one.
It takes a moment for you to think about it. "You... don't have anything that can't be cold, right?" That's sort of the most important thing.
"I don't think so... why do you ask?"
"Mitsuru-san's good at ice magic." And mind control, but you don't think it would be a good idea to mention the mind control. Even if that would be a good way to end their confrontation without actual violence. You'd rather she didn't brainwash people at all. "She's gotten better at not using it without meaning to, but when she gets mad..." Even if you stop living with her eventually, you imagine it's going to take a while for you to get out of the habit of having winter clothing always within reach. It just seems like a good habit to have.
You leave it off there, and the two of you head for the bottom of the stairs, where you'll still be able to head back easily but are almost certainly out of freezing range.
She doesn't know Niflheim yet. It is.
Still, after coming all this way to find him... you should probably actually talk about something. If only to pass the time until Mitsuru-san's done with... whatever she's doing.
You sort of don't want to know what she's doing, actually...
[ ] Will Akira be mad if his apartment is buried under a sheet of ice?
[ ] Why is his father so obsessed with Akira's homework, anyway?
[ ] You've more or less finished the first part of your story... you could show it to him. Especially the part where Ren first gets his Persona.
[ ] So, once you get back to school... what's the plan for the library?
[ ] He has been getting fed, right? You were sort of worried about that.
[ ] Aside from the obvious issues, has his break been going well so far?
