Ah well. Not risking anything but a delicious virtual cookie doesn't get me as fired up for it, but here's a guess:
The vague version of my guess is that its an alternate reality trial that the elders will set students to struggle through eventually.
But being vague is boring, so I'll get super specific: A sudden portal opened to an ancient civilization of a parallel reality of this world. Completely alien trials, people dressed like earth's ancient mayans, massive dinosaur god-spirits that see the students as insects, random UFOs coming down to try to abduct people, and the goal of the trial is to reach the top of a ziggurat while avoiding all this mess and making sure its the pig who gets chosen as the sacrifice to the death god-spirits by winning a match of cultivator beach-volleyball on the second highest level while three moons and a pterodactyl watch them carefully from the stands.
Quan Jia may even find it interesting... say 20% odds of her not calling it boring.
Ghosts, visions of men and women, larger than life, larger than reality, flicker in and out of her vision. Huge shapes, cascade down from a ship massive enough to blot out the sun.
I'd say it's something to do with this, but this'd be more likely to be some kind of endgame plot unless we're just dealing with a shipwreck.
As an aside, is it just me or is anyone else tempted to go full social next turn? I'm less tempted than I was considering the meridians weren't actually painful in the end, but there's an argument to be made to go for Xiao Lien, Meng Chao, Mei Mei and Dai Qiao.
The first's the only one I'd consider mandatory so she has new duds in time for the next Elder lessons, but the others could all be valuable in their own right excepting Mei Mei, which is more of a sounding out action for me the player than the character.
I think Mei Mei's social action is right up there with Xiao Lien's. You gotta treat your right-hand woman well, especially when she's an scary-competent assassin or something . Plus I think its the action most in-line with Quan Jia's character so far. She cares about Mei Mei and tries not to take her for granted.
I think we should do Xiao Lien, Mei Mei, and Meng Chao personally. I want to know more of how we stand with Meng and how difficult it will be to make an ally of him.
Eight gold and orichalcum legs carry Chen Bai down tunnels twisted into and out of the Reflection without any apparent sense of reason. Apparent sense. To one who could read the contradictory nature of that place, though, the anchors of unreality sank deeply into the bedrock of Peak Riven Stone were the least of what was required for… coherence.
That he was even here, wandering hallways reserved for only the most senior of Elders and even then at only the most specific of times, instead of tinkering with his latest creation was cause for concern. Annoyance. But, the preferences of a researcher, even a valued Elder of Craft, mattered little when Sect Matriarch Pan Liu rose from contemplation.
At the end of his purposeful wandering, a doorway, set indistinguishable to the surrounding stone resonates with a small emerald and jade ring carried in a special pocket sewn into loose robes, opens. Eight arachnid legs shrink to more human proportions, and Chen Bai steps inside.
Inside is the night sky. Stars without counting shimmer above, beside, and below him. A single step navigates endlessly folded and infinite space and Chen Bai takes his place along a single round table, incandescent with the Dao.
To his left, Elder Xia Mei smiles her customary, enigmatic smile. While to his right, Elder Fang Ai stands, posture perfect in a way mere repetition could never grant. It is perhaps fortunate that the nature of this place bled away errant manifestations of domain, for he did not anticipate anything fortuitous would occur from being caught between the madness of Elder Xia Mei and the bared steel of Elder Fang Ai.
Still, propriety dictated most social interactions, and thus, "Greetings Elder Sister Xia Mei," he tilted his head respectfully to the most senior first. "And greetings as well, Elder Sister Fang Ai."
The edge of a blade caresses against his throat and vanishes. It was as much acknowledgement as he could hope for from Elder Fang Ai. The feather-light touch of insanity caressing his thoughts was much less welcome, but equally indicative of Elder Xia Mei's attention. As were her words, "Ohh, junior brother has been drawn from his workshop? Things must be interesting indeed."
"If Elder Xia Mei had perhaps remained cognizant of issues within the sect," Elder Fang Ai seems unable to ignore her… rival's voice though she speaks without turning her head to address either Xia Mei or himself. "Then she would know the contents, and import, of this upcoming meeting."
"It seems as though it is my junior sister who lacks… awareness," that Chen Bai can hear the mockery in Elder Xia Mei's voice means that it is, perhaps not even, just shy of outright rudeness, "although, perhaps those untrustworthy of the deeper secrets must, of necessity, remain ignorant."
Elder Fang Ai flinches almost imperceptibly at that, and Chen Bai knows there will be blood spilled for those words. It is, perhaps, unfortunate that blood will belong to Elder Fang Ai, but there is ever a cost to lacking sufficient control over one's emotions.
Fortunately, the scent of cherry blossoms in bloom masking the rot of mulch forestalls any further comment. Violence in this place would have disastrous ramifications. For all of them.
"Good, you're all here, on time… and with only a modicum of squabbling," Matriarch Pan Liu appears in her place at the head of the table and spares a single viridescent glance for each of the twelve elders attending.
"Since matters have drawn me from contemplation, and drawn all of you from your chosen activities," there's a brief glance, but to the assembled elders it couldn't have been more obvious, toward Sect Head Hu Bao. "We will begin immediately, Hu Bao, a summary, briefly if you can manage it."
"Matriarch," the Sect Head bows, not a trace of emotion visible on his face, "one month prior, divinatory techniques performed by the sect in advance of the Festival told twin messages of Boon and Calamity."
"Without further clarification, scouts from the Army as well as various Core Disciples were tasked with gathering any potential clues on this foretelling." Eyes flicker to Elder Xue Ning, whose disciples had been instrumental in discovering the source of this mystery. "With Disciple Shen Hong's expert support, the sect army was able to discover traces of a mysterious flying ship, subsequently dubbed the Ark."
"Good, and practically laconic," Chen Bai is unsure whether the words are meant to be mockery or praise, and it appears the Sect Head is equally unsure. Either way he bows again and takes a step back. "An Ark, shrouded in twisted space and darkening the skies of my sect. Xue Ning, your contributions."
"Matriarch," Chen Bai's junior brother bows and steps forward, "my disciple Shen Hong was able to locate the patch of distorted space that serves as home to this Ark, unfortunately all of his initial attempts were all rebuffed by a barrier he could neither see nor sense. Shen Hong described it as though trying to move through an infinitely compressed plane of space."
"I myself observed a similar, though significantly more hostile, phenomena upon my own attempt," Elder Xue Ning rubs idly at a forearm that had been entirely regrown after encountering some manner of defensive ability of the Ark. "After the loss of twelve scouts, we were forced to reassess modes of entry."
"A failure of power… too much rather than too little, as I understand it," Matriarch Pan Liu turns to him, "Chen Bai, tell us of what you learned."
"Matriarch," he bows as the previous two speakers had and steps forward, "initial analysis hypothesized the presence of a Dao linked exclusion field, similar to the apocryphal field around the Imperial Labyrinth, though inverted in nature. Several autonomous probes of varying levels of Dao were dispatched and all failed to gain entry through the exclusion field, thus prompting a reconsideration."
"Trust a scientist to bore with unnecessary details," Matriarch Pan Liu frowns and even Chen Bai can clearly understand the unspoken command.
"A second batch of automata were created, of which one was capable of piercing through the field." Golden gears grind away the disappointment at reducing weeks of Creation and ingenuity into a spare sentence. "Inside, the automata was able to recover several specimens of indeterminate sentiency."
"Which brings us to our own lovely interrogator," Matriarch Pan Liu grins in a way that Chen Bai could only consider bloodthirsty, one that is answered in kind if not intensity by the Elder Sister Xia Mei.
"Sentient, perhaps even sapient, though their minds are twisted and fractured in a way that makes it difficult to tell and altogether too fragile to survive a deeper questioning." Elder Xia Mei shrugs from where she's standing. "It reminds me a bit of trying to break one aligned to a Court far removed from imperial norms."
"To summarize, for the slow and inattentive," the Matriarch spares a brief frown for the apparent lack of respect exhibited by Elder Sister, but lets it go in favor of continuing. "First: we have an unknown calamity or boon floating about above the sect. Second: no one with a cultivation level above Quartz is able to pass through the exclusion field it produces. Third: within are spirit-like entities of unknown and unknowable intelligence. Ideas, I want them. You will provide them. Or I will scourge Elders until I hear an acceptable answer."
For a long moment all is silence, either from fear or contemplation, but eventually Chen Bai speaks, "I can, perhaps in time, develop a counter to the exclusion field. Something of an appositive harmonic frequency… perhaps."
"That's one vote for deconvolution, what else?"
"Sufficient reserves of power exist within the sect and the province itself that we could render the Ark nonfunctional." Elder Jin Ru offers.
"Excellent, let's open fire on an item of unknown power but obviously surpassing artifice." Matriarch Pan Liu scowls and space twists around Elder Jin Ru as he vanishes. "Fools should remain silent."
"We do have quite a few… resources of Quartz Soul or below," even Chen Bai can't quite help the incredulity that crosses his face at his Elder Sister's comment, "make it a trial… it is supposed to be a boon after all, and disciples of sufficiently lacking strength will flock to the promise it contains."
"Throw fools at it until one gets lucky," the Matriarch grins, "I knew there was a reason you were my favorite, Xia Mei."
"Any other, not stupid ideas?" Silence rings heavily, but no one speaks and after a time the Matriarch nods, "then we will open the Ark for admittance to any cultivator at, but no higher than, Quartz Soul in… four month's time. Let it coincide with the month after the annual resumption of violence. Gives some time for hopelessness and desperation to set in."
Decision reached, Matriarch Pan Liu wastes not an instant longer before disappearing from the meeting. Elder Sister grins as Chen Bai looks his way, "did you happen to see that my favorite made it into the sect after all? Every knife needs must the whetting stone after all..."
With those, perhaps ominous, words she vanishes. Chen Bai looks around a suddenly empty table and sighs.
For those familiar with the genre, this is the trope of: here's this super special treasure place (filled with danger) that only people approximately as powerful as the protagonist can enter. It's (almost certainly) not a death trap, but it's up to voters whether they want to (and are capable of) participating.
If voters want to participate, Quan Jia must be Quartz Soul by no later than Turn 21
[Turn 4 Vote]
Quan Jia has 4 actions she may take for this turn, of which all 4 can be cultivation. She may cultivate any particular thing up to 4 times per week.
Actions are broken up into categories that use the same general rules.
While there aren't any trap options in the sense of "rocks fall, everyone dies", there are options that are sub-optimal.
Feel free to ping me and ask for clarification or whatever on the particular voting options, if you have any setting related questions, or if you're trying to put together one of the write-in options.
1 Hour Moratorium.
Quan Jia has 8 relevant cultivation level spirit gems. She may use up to 2 (cultivation level + 1) for this week's cultivation. At least 1 is required to mitigate a 50% penalty on xp gained. Spirit gems apply their bonus to all cultivation actions taken (this rule may be revised later).
Once per month (Every 4 turns) Quan Jia may attend either or both of the training classes offered by the sect. While there, the elder will choose what will be cultivated, but they will also provide resources for said cultivation (in addition to any resources used during that turn).

Social actions provide no direct mechanical benefit, however, they do allow for an increase in relationship score and may unlock certain quest lines. Social actions will also gradually provide the following information for the related character: derived stats, skills they can mentor, other useful information.
Social actions are only available for characters that have been met previously. If you would like to meet new characters, go exploring (or I suppose wait for me to introduce them during bonus actions…).
Social actions will, for the most part, expire at the end of the month in which they were introduced (i.e. every 4-turn period). At which point they will be replaced by other options.
[] That weird shadow girl, what was her name… oh right, Ma Liqiu had stopped by to ask if Quan Jia, not Lady Quan, would be willing to join her at a teahouse. Maybe she wouldn't be so boring after all.
[] Only Meng Chao can answer why he was inspecting individual grains of rice at a merchant's stall, but Quan Jia found it odd enough that she had to stop what she was doing and investigate. Has he always been this weird?
[] Yeah, Quan Jia was trying to make her oldest friend super strong, but did that really excuse Xiao Lien from always wearing the same ugly, boring robe. Honestly, she'd put it off for long enough, but Quan Jia would see her friend wearing decent clothes if it killed her. It wouldn't really kill her though, would it?
[] Though it would be hard for anyone else to tell, Mei Mei was clearly being even more sarcastic than normal. It was time for Quan Jia to drag her off for a spa day. This wasn't because I keep grounding her, right?
[] That was a lot of nascent spirits trailing behind Dai Qiao. Was she taking them for a walk? Quan Jia knew she had to find out. Do boge dream of spirit-sheep.
Quest: How to Save a Life
Mitigate Luo Lifen's attempts to turn disciples against Xiao Lien and by extension Quan Jia. Failure will result in Xiao Lien's departure from the sect and possibly in her death.
[] Write in actions
This is something I want to try to mirror the freedom that tabletop rpgs offer. So how this will work is: I have and will continue hinting at upcoming interpersonal issues, storyline quests, or sect wide events. If voters wish to identify and address them before things explode they can do so here by writing in what the issue is, how it should be addressed, and an alternative action to take if incorrect. If it's correct (and whatever necessary criteria are met, e.g. relationship score) we'll start that event early, otherwise, we'll perform the alternative action.
Additionally, if voters want to go completely off the board and do something not at all reflected in the turn votes, that can be written in here.
[] Write in issue.
-[] general approach.

Alright! We have a goal! Or, I should say, I have a goal!
Because I can smell the deliciousness that can come from having DEJ inside of a long-forgotten vessel of superlative artifice. And it will be delicious.
Now if I recall correctly, the plan for Week 4 was two cultivation actions into Dreamer's Endless Journey (no pill) and two socials.

This goal seems pretty easy to me. Getting there with the skills and techniques to keep us reasonably safe inside? 🤔
I'm definitely down to go for it though. It sounds like its exactly the kind of terrifyingly exciting trial we need to work towards to succeed. Rewards should be great if we can manage it.
Also, I find it funny that my ridiculous guess hasn't been disproven yet xD. Looks like that cookie is still up for grabs!
Should we have 8 this turn? We got 5 last turn, used 2, then got 5 more this week.

Tentatively leaning this, unless someone else has an idea of anything urgent we should explore or train this week.
Give Xiao Lien a makeover, whilst also cutting down on a potential avenue of attack for her detractors. Spend time with Mei Mei, for fun if nothing else. Sound out Meng, as whilst I'm getting the inclination he'd be harder to make friends with than Shao even if all we do is get a better read on his Resonance/who he is as a person it'd be worth it. And get to know Dai Qiao better, as well as find out more about what a Speaker actually is.
My guess actually is that it will be open from week 13 - week 21 as a trial. Here's what they talk about in regards to allowing members of the Sect to attempt a breach into the Ark.
"Any other, not stupid ideas?" Silence rings heavily, but no one speaks and after a time the Matriarch nods, "then we will open the Ark for admittance to any cultivator at, but no higher than, Quartz Soul in… four month's time. Let it coincide with the annual resumption of violence."
"Second," Hu Bao continues as everyone slowly returns to upright positions, "there will be a moratorium on all violence, either toward individuals or their effects for a period of three months. Those that cannot restrain their baser instincts until this moratorium is over will find themselves dismissed from the sect, regardless of their patronage."
So the trick, therefore, would be to get to quartz soul to take advantage of the opportunity, don't go higher than quartz soul when we can exploit the opportunity, defend our gains from the opportunity from those too strong to enter the realm themselves, and be strong enough to make the best use of the opportunity while it is available.
It'll be a very interesting balancing act to be sure.

The thing is we're currently in the middle of Month 1, and Week 21 is the beginning of Month 5 which would match up with 4 months from now. My inclination is the numbers got mixed up somewhere.
It would make narrative sense if the Ark opened at the start of Month 5 considering the truce ends at the beginning of Month 4. That gives a month for the violence to occur, grudges to get settled yadda yadda, so that when it does open the desperate and the greedy will be all the more eager to flock to it.

This was more or less the intention. I'll edit that statement a bit to provide a bit more clarity. On a meta level, I thought month 4 would put voters in a bit too much of a bind to get things situated for breakthrough.

[X] Thor's Twin
's plans.
If we use the pill it'll be on a turn solely for cultivation, and considering there's at least one social I want to do this turn that means saving it for Turn 6 at the earliest (Turn 5 having the Elder lessons).
Thor's Twin has an idea to do 2 actions on DEJ this turn, 1 on Turn 5, then use the pill and put 4 actions in on Turn 6, which should be enough to get us to level 2 in the art.
