Shards of Awakening

[X] Plan Pain Train

It will still probably be less painful than our exploration roles.

[X] Plan Pain Train
Month 1 - Week 3 - Mono Cultivation turn - Meridians.
Month 1 - Week 4 - 2 cultivation actions (DEJ) Two social (Mei Mei needs a spa day.)
Month 2 - Week 1 - 2 classes, 1 DEJ action, 1 social/explore/ something
Month 2 - Week 2 - Mon Cultivation turn - DEJ.
With such a one-sided vote so far, how about some discussion on the future?

I'm still liking this plan so far, but it does mean we're only going to get to take two of those social options and then we'll get a new set. We should absolutely give Mei Mei her spa day and get Xiao Lien proper clothing. But the other options shouldn't be discarded without thought. Especially the Meng Chao option could, I think, bring us a lot of good results. If we manage to befriend him, then we can have both of the other nobles on our side for the Pig to contend with when she wants to mess with us. I think that would put us in a pretty strong position against her.

I have to go back and look at the mechanics a little bit more so I understand exactly what we lose by only doing 3 meridian actions, but I'm wondering which of this week or next would be best to change if we want to take more than 2 social actions before the month is out.

I think qe should befriend the sword lady. Meng Shao can be bought with Money and rationality (like, being with us will give him better deals than the the Luo). We could give a action ro him, obvious, but the Sword Lady sounds, to me, more fun. And honestly, if Xiao Len stays in good terma with her, who would try shit with 2 scion protecting her?
And sword lady is kind easy to do that: Xiao Len just need to become stronger an dgive a good fight

We already have Shao Cuifen on our friends list, and yeah we should definitely maintain that.

But saying Meng Chao can just be bought off seems like a bit of an assumption to me. It worked to get the good house, but there have been a number of hints that Quan Jia doesn't understand him very well. She doesn't understand his Resonance, and the social action's description tells us explicitly that he does weird things we don't understand. Besides, if we ignore him, that could be leaving him open to Luo Lifen to use against us. If all that matters is money and rationality, I imagine she has those as well.

I'm not saying we need to befriend them both, but if the pig girl is our major antagonist (which it sure as heck looks like so far), getting both of them on our side would be a major benefit.

---

Also, I've gone back and looked over the mechanics more closely. Meridians are sooooo incredibly powerful. I don't think we can give up using this pill to the maximum 4 action potential.

I could certainly vote for swapping one of the Meridian action for Mei Mei's spa day.
Quan Jia will be quite sore from multiple Meridian actions and it gives the QM something a little more interesting to write for this week.

"Then this attendant will endeavor to ensure that any mishaps are of amusement equivalent to the scolding that will result." her attendant's voice echoes in that way it does when she's not entirely corporeal.
Mei Mei is the best.

I remember being asked about how skills work, and at the time I wasn't quite sure. I've had some time to think since, and for voters that were hesitant to engage with skills because of the uncertainty around them here's an outline for the system:

Skills represent a transcendence of mortal limit in a particular task or activity, thus they require a breakthrough in order to advance to 1 dot. This breakthrough roll is as follows 1d100 > 100 - [(Cultivation Level + Mentor Skill Level + Relevant Base Attribute]. Most skills are fairly obvious which attribute applies, but if there's any questions with regards to plan-making or otherwise, ping me and I'll let you know.

Skills advance as a function of either training or of use and require XP = (Current Level + 1) * 10.

In contrast to xp gained while cultivation, xp gained from skills is the sum of all d10 rolled.

Training: when being trained by a mentor, Quan Jia receives xd10 with x being equal to the mentor's skill level.

Use: when Quan Jia passes tests or successfully uses her skills she receives xd10 with x being equal to 2 * (DC)

In general training will generate more predictable xp while use has a higher maximum gain.

Training from friends is free while training from acquaintances and other individuals (e.g. more senior disciples) will carry at least a nominal cost (most likely in the form of an as yet unavailable resource: contribution points).

This brings up the question of whether we could have Mei Mei train Jia, as someone who is both old and Amber she should have a good amount of skills trained to a high level.

[] That weird shadow girl, what was her name… oh right, Ma Liqiu had stopped by to ask if Quan Jia, not Lady Quan, would be willing to join her at a teahouse. Maybe she wouldn't be so boring after all.
Does anyone remember who this is?

She was the one we sparred with in the Elder's lesson, then asked to keep an eye out while we napped.

I'm not sure we can have a nominal Sect outsider train us? Then again she was apparently sparring with Xiao, so who knows.

Ma Liqiu is the girl we sparred with in our first combat class.

For gameplay reasons, I'll let voters pick 3 skills that she can train at a 3 dot effectiveness. If any of those skills are representative of skills she should/would have as a consequence of narrative descriptions, she will train those skills at 5 dots

Huh. Wouldn't have thought we'd get to pick. How exactly do you want us to vote?
Dodge, stealth and Knowledge: politics would be my first thought.
The first two should be her specialties, Dodge should blend with our combat style really well, Politics isn't something I'd expect us to easily find a tutor for in the sect otherwise, and Stealth I admittedly picked out of a combo of it being a good fit for Mei Mei and the idea of getting away with sleeping in class.
It'd make us a bit too close to Ling Qi for my liking, so if anyone has any suggestions instead of stealth I'm open to ideas?

My suggestion would be to wait until we do a social action with Mei Mei and get to know her better, there's no rush to decide now since we aren't training our skills in the near future.

Well, the long-term plan that I've proposed actually has some considerable flex. We could very easily cultivate two actions for Month 2 - week 1 and only cultivate one action on Month 1 - Week 4. Alternatively, we can take a gamble and not cultivate anything on Month 1 - Week 4, instead taking a chance to find a site that helps art cultivation. A single one has some good chances of allowing us to get to the point of getting DEJ level 2 with only 2 actions outside of the mono week.

Another possibility is to actually get to DEJ level 2 on Month 2 - Week 3, which gives a ton more flexibility on what to do and when.

Next Update:
Quan Jia spends all week painstakingly opening Meridians at home.
For the free exploration roll, she takes about three steps outside before deciding that she is too tired and flops on some pillows. (Because the roll was crap again.)
Xiao Lien and Mei Mei just stare at her the whole time.
