Shards of a Broken Sun [Deprecated; see link in final post for remake]

It didn't. Everyone else gets a backstory, but Amu's past is a black hole. So I'm filling it in a little.

You can assume that everything I claim happened prior to Ran showing up is made up. That also means there are no spoilers available for purchase~
What kind of god was the shrine dedicated to? It's the sort of thing you're supposed to know at shrines so you don't go praying to a god of war for your mother's health.

A god of the land. Basically, guardian deity for the local town and surroundings; they're by far the most common sort, once you get above gods of individual rocks and so forth.

There's no doubt more to learn, but Amu didn't pay that much attention.

Isn't Shinto amazing sometimes?

Anyway, given that info, and the fact they're in Tokyo, Im willing to place my bets on it being Masakado.

Unless they werent...Well, either way. We can narrow it down as we go along

Amu lives in Tokyo, and has never lived elsewhere, though at one point she was begging her mom to move to Osaka.

Well, Tokyos a big place, and it's currently an aggregate of what used to be separate cities in the past, iirc. So there can only be so many. Even if Masakado is supposed to be top tier among them, that doesn't mean he's the one you're setting us up to free.

Maskado? Maybe, he's the "Guardian of Tokyo" and the closest thing to a "Patron" that the Neutral side ever gets.

Monday's Turmoil 21
You're Teddy, and you've just said hello to Miki in what your memories tell you is a formal manner, only to find that there are suddenly two of her.

"I… Amu," she stammers. Her head drops for a second, then she recovers her composure and looks you in the eyes, her voice firming up despite the spreading blush on her cheeks. "You're Teddy?"

You nod, still smiling. Maybe smiling a little extra, because you're meeting a new person and you want to make a good impression, especially now that they've doubled. Yu-niisan-sensei only mentioned Miki, but maybe if you're careful neither will notice you aren't human. You've already been lucky not mixing them up from the get-go.

Amu holds her hand up. "Just a minute. Miki?"

Girl-watching is probably your favourite hobby, so you don't mind the delay. You watch admiringly as Miki picks herself up; she's a bit younger than you, or at least the way you appear, but that's okay. It makes her less intimidating.

Not that Chie and the others are intimidating, exactly, they're just… hard to understand, sometimes, too much like adults. That's why you like Nana-chan so much; your sister, now, sort of. You hope she isn't lonely, since you left home right in the middle of the card game. You also hope she isn't rearranging your cards again.

Now, what would be the best way to greet them properly? Some kind of twin-related pun, obviously. Well. They aren't the first pair of twins you've ever met, but they're absolutely the most identical; if it wasn't for her bag, you would never have been able to tell Miki apart from Amu. Same clothing, same hairstyle…

I see you're bear-side yourself?

You can almost see Yosuke's reaction. He wouldn't even bother complaining, he'd just shake his head sadly. No, you can do better; that one isn't good enough. Then… well, you're obviously bear-y pleased to meet them…

Ah. I'm bear-ly able to tell you apart, but bear-y pleased to meet you both. That will do.

A strange scent catches your attention.

You glance away for a second, and when you look back they're all huddled up and you can't tell who's who anymore. The bag sits on the ground between them. One of them blinks owlishly at you, then they start whispering to each other.

You don't even try to tell what they're saying. There's something very odd going on here. It was just the two of them, right? Yu mentioned—

Your attention is drawn back to the girl on the left, who's frowning at you, narrowed eyes nearly hidden by her short blue bangs.

"Then, nice to meet you," she says. "But… eto… Why did you do that to Miki?" Her voice goes plaintive. "You thief!"

Miki has turned to the side and is hiding her face, her shoulders shaking, and Amu—like a pint-sized tiger—is standing protectively in front of her, glaring upwards at you. You're getting a sinking feeling about your greeting, because you didn't expect her to get angry, but at the same time it's positively the cutest thing you've seen all day.

"Well, I'm bear-y—"

Wait, thief?

You're confused, and there's only one way to fix that. "I'm bear-y sorry," you say. "But I don't know what you mean. What did I steal?"

"That's—" Amu's voice shakes slightly, you think you hear muted sobbing from her sister. This has definitely gone wrong, and you don't understand why! What did you do? "You stole the most heinous thing you possibly could, you ursine fiend! You stole my— I mean, her—" Miki loses her grip and falls to the ground, her muted sobs turning into loud laughter. "—My first ki… Amu, stop laughing!"

Your eyes widen in realisation, as Miki—not Amu—punches her sister lightly, and Amu just laughs harder. A moment later, Miki follows suit. You've just been pranked, and you're still not sure what happened. You didn't kiss anyone, did you? You wouldn't, that's grown-up stuff.

When in doubt, plow on. You'll make a joke of it. "Sorry, but I'm bear-ly able to—"

Miki's eyes fix on yours—no, she's looking behind you—and they widen in alarm.

"Maya, stop!"

Pain.

———————

"That was not okay! Why did you—"

"—are all the same. You saw what he did."

"—a joke! We weren't actually—"

———————

You wince, and the world swims into focus from what appears to be the floor. You can feel someone gently poking at the back of your head, which still hurts. It feels like you got hit by a grizzly bear.

"Oww," you say.

"Are you okay?"

Slight movements elicit further pain, along with a pair of hands carefully holding your head still, and you decide to go along with that. You can see… one of the girls, out of the corner of your eye. She looks concerned.

You've been hit harder before. True, you got healed afterwards, but…

"I'll be fine. What hit me?"

She shifts her gaze, and you feel the hands pause for a second.

"Just a bruise," the other one says. "I fixed that. He'll be fine in an hour."

Your voice gets a little whiny. "It still hurts, though! What hit me?"

"That's…"

"She did. Amu, stop making excuses for her!" The one in front kneels down in front of you—Miki, you guess—and you make your best attempt at a smile. Her brows are furrowed; she looks upset, but you don't think it's at you. She's still pretty, like a blue rose. "Maya just up and punched him. Really, why would you do that?"

She's addressing the air to your right. You're about to ask, when it starts speaking.

"He's still alive, right? That means it's fine. It's not like he's actually hurt, I pulled my punch."

Miki's reply isn't fit for print. Some of it might shock even Sensei, if he were here. You try not to listen, because there's something there, in the talking air—something that looks human, once you think about it—but you have to force your eyes to focus, and every one of your senses but sight insist that there's nothing there but air.

Yu-sensei also mentioned…

"Is that a demon?" You ask, squinting as if that will make it easier to see. Which it does, actually; the more you focus on seeing, the less your other senses fool you. It—she, it looks like a woman—was there all along, the only reason you'd missed her was that you couldn't feel her presence. You still can't, but your eyes work fine.

A demon, right. It's the first time you've seen one. You instantly dislike her.

"I'm a her," the demon says sulkily.

"Afraid so." Miki sighs, then reaches over to hold your hand. "I'm sorry about what happened, but maybe we can try again. Just don't kiss me this time, and enough with the bear jokes; Margaret told me all about you. I'm Hinamori Miki, and that—" she motions behind you—"Is my idiot sister, Amu. Maya's our… I'll tell you when we figure it out. We really need to get home now, though."

Her hand is warm, and comfortable. Maybe there's still a chance to make some friends.

{ } Tell her you'd like to talk more, whenever there's time.
{ } Chicken out.

Collective Unconscious, Fuefuki—Inaba congruence domain
Monday's Turmoil, 11:30

"You can't get us back to Tokyo?" Amu sounds frantic, and has ever since you told her it's already past eleven. "Miki, we need to go! Right now!"

"I only know how to get back to where I came from," you say. You're already preparing to send them to Fuefuki—Inaba, though you take a few seconds extra to make the stack of TVs look tidy for once. Amu doesn't seem to realise. Miki…

Miki is hanging back, face pale. The two of you realise that something is wrong the moment she starts speaking. Her voice is thin, reedy and un-Miki-like.

"What's going to happen to me? If I go back… I'm only this size because I'm here. If I go back, am I going to shrink again?" She hugs herself, tugging fitfully at a lock of hair. "I don't want to go back!"

It feels like you're seeing something you shouldn't have. You aren't sure what she's talking about, and you don't know what to do.

{ } Offer to stay with her.
{ } Ask what the problem is.

[ ] Shadow Etched in Air would take a long time, but… if it's for Miki…
[ ] You might already be too late, you haven't even woken Fumi yet, and every minute counts!

A/N: I'll name a Lilith after you. It'll be grand! And confusing. By the way, congrats on literally skipping time.

That's what I love about your writing Baughn

My obsession with spotting hints is never wasted

Other people can take point, i've got to help someone completely overhaul their characterization

Define "ready". There might be side-effects, but the charm would have worked fine from the moment you got it, in the sense that it'd do what's in the description.

How long until it stops being a suicide pact, rather?

Given how it's a Charm that actively costs Essence rather then needing a commitment, and it's "Instant Death" if it ever fails.

Even a mote commitment is fine, Solars have quite a lot of wiggle room. It's the "It's not commited, it Actively costs you essence" that hurts. Either shut off the "Instant death" clause, or get it to where it's a commitment only thing, and it becomes "Usable"

You might be reading more into this than I intended to put there. As I explained last time, the difference between "committed" and "continuous" is that the latter reduces your mote regeneration rate, by a fraction proportional to the amount by which your pool would be lessened had it been committed.

It's not a suicide pact. Not so long as you stay anywhere where you can respire motes. Admittedly there might be ways of stopping you from doing so, but it's a fairly low risk, and not in any sense instant death.
Let's say "doesn't tie up motes on a permanent basis"
It'll always be at least committed motes. Beyond that, difficult to say; could be hours, could be days.

We skipped time, so we can't stick around

And Miki is just too vital at this point. We can convince her that leaving for now is necessary, and remind her of Shadow etched unto air as we prey on her newfound motivation to bring her around.

Exa-kuns currently working on it, right?

edit: the situation with the Investigation Team sounds interesting as well, looking forward to seeing how that's played out

The problem is that the default Essence recovery rate is Four per hour when at rest. While you've admittedly house-ruled it to be a high output faucet when we're in combat time, you've also said that we throttle back to the default recovery rate when not in combat, and the Exaltation won't be up to full combat time regeneration for a while longer.

In other words, just doing it once would be enough to halve our recovery rate. Doing it Twice would exhaust it. Doing it enough for all four would mean that any hour we're not fighting, we're hemmoraging 4 Essence per hour. And if it ever fails, the Chara is instantly annihilated.

That's all But a suicide pact, given what little we know of the interactions. Just getting it to the point where we could either update it without killing the Chara, or put it to a Mote Commitment instead makes it usable instead of a disaster waiting to happen. I was hoping that the Exaltation would have made further progress in the past couple hours at least :(

Oh, my. No, it's not that expensive. Let me share the calculation.

The cost is 2m/chara, in terms of committed motes. In terms of regeneration, the cost is (2 / pool size * 4) per hour, which comes out to a recharge speed reduction of 13.333% repeating... or just above 0.5 motes/hour.

EDIT: Off by 4x
