Shards of a Broken Sun [Deprecated; see link in final post for remake]

Pretty sure Amu isn't good enough to get things to that point.
Yeah, maintaining what she's saved is hard enough. Inviolable reality is a bit beyond her right now.

But really, comparing the possibility that Matou gets kicked out vs the certainty that a ton of people will die if the Seal isn't shored up, it's not even a contest. It would still be a no-brainer if we knew Matou would get kicked out for sure, even, because many,, many, many more lives would be saved by a Seal that strong.

So Yui is a ten year old girl who is good at math and baking with a habit of befriending her former enemies... who is also brave enough to charge a supernatural Bull creature with a fireplace poker...
Her last name wouldn't happen to be Takamichi would it?

Nanoha's reputation as friendmaker is vastly overrated. She did it once, to Alice, and... but let's not get into that now.

Yui's family name is Yagami.

Yui's family name is Yagami.
...
Hopefully unrelated. To each and every one.
...
Given that each and every one besides maybe Light would fit as a relative given psych profile and actions... Ahahahahahahaha...

PS. Typical Yagami "luck" too... and tendency to find themselves in some dark plot and/or bond with some dangerous artefact and/or creature and/or curse...

Ya know, I'm kind of surprised no one's getting upset over Amu potentially kicking Matou outside of reality. We just had MC #1 kill off MC #2 when we're controlling both of them.
That won't happen, at least not in this coming update. Anything that would kick Matou out of reality would probably also kick everyone's charas out of reality, and also Maya and Teddy.

I worded the vote as I did for a reason:
[X] Figure out how to augment the Dragon Seal to eject, repress, or hobble demonic enemies without causing charas or allied demons any harm.

In retrospect, though (now that I'm looking at the vote with a fresh eye), I should probably have omitted the word "Meditate" from the XP expenditure; I think I was thinking of Alchemical Solutions when I wrote it, and I'm not sure that it's either appropriate or necessary for Amu. It's not important enough for me to go messing with the vote at this late a stage, but... well, try not to take that word too literally, Baughn?

Okay, here's my current thoughts. (EDIT: For convenience, the still-relevant portions of my earlier partial suggestion (here) have been added to this post.)

The video
[X] "Why, is it security-sensitive?"
- [X] If it's not, anyone can watch who wants to (even Nanako, if her father's OK with it).
- [X] If it is, keep anyone who doesn't have a clearance (that is, anyone whose last name isn't Kanno or Hinamori) from watching.
- - [X] Maya can't watch the whole thing, but take snapshots that that don't have our people in them and ask her about them: the armies of angels, the Septentriones, those two fighting each other.
(Baughn: I think you can guess the answer. Going with this anyway.)

Delegation
[X] Get in contact with Utau and Su. Use checking on them for a situation update as an excuse to check on them personally. (It is neither necessary nor desirable to conceal this fact from them.)
- [X] If they can't or don't need to maintain the Chara Change, once we start our own work, Su should help with the un-evacuation, and possibly with infrastructure.
[X] Get in contact with Ran. If she's going stir-crazy (and she probably is), have her help with the Angel cordon, and to (help?) prepare JPs' defenses against attack by Merak, in case that turns out to still happen. (Baughn: Oh my.)
[X] Have Miki (continue to) assist you and Fumi.
- [X] If there's time, ask her opinion about picking up Craft (vacuum).
[X] Get JPs' people to collate and forward anything and everything they know about the Septentriones, including why they expected there to be one per day.
- [X] We may need an actual staff. Do we have a staff? (Baughn: Much to the terror of Lt. Kato, you sort of do.)
- [X] As a lower priority, also get someone to get us a file on that one shrine where that one god Nyarly asked us to free is. Inform them (truthfully) that we were tipped off to a possible ally there but we need more information.
[X] Have somebody who isn't you, but who can figure out what questions to ask, talk to Maya.
- [X] Preferably over a video link, so they won't do something stupid like threaten use of force and thereby make her uncooperative. Listen in, if you can.
- [X] She's definitely opposed to at least one of the groups involved here (Septentriones or angels). Utau+Su can probably tell which from her reaction, even just from a video recording. (Baughn: One point in Socialize does not equate to... but you're not wrong.)
[X] Ask Teddy, Dojima, and Nanako to look for Teddy's allies.
- [X] Arrange an occult expert at JPs for them to get in contact with, so they can get each other up to speed. Listen in, if you can.

Resource Expenditures, not necessarily all at once:
- [X] First Lore Excellency (~ 30 min, 8 XP, ⅔ QS)
- [X] God-Mind Algorithms (~ 30 min, 8 XP, 1 QS)
- [ ] Solar Parser Efficiency (~ 30 min, 8 XP, 1 QS)
- [X] Occult 3 (1 hour, 5 XP)
- [X] Occult 4 (1 hour, 7 XP)
- [?] Miki: Craft (vacuum) 1 (1 hour, 1 3 XP, possibly from Miki's pool)
Remaining: 4⅓ quick-learn slots, 38 XP (or 3⅓ QS, 30 XP)

Personal Actions:
[X] Check on the Dragon Seal. If Fumi and Miki are fighting a losing battle right now, put off everything else to help until you can buy an hour.
[X] Meditate. Acquire the First Lore Excellency and God-Mind Algorithms. Possibly also Solar Parser Efficiency.
[X] Help Fumi stabilize and start repairing the Dragon Seal.
[X] Analyze the Harmonizer-program JPs got from the kids at Dubhe's first attack site. Figure out how to port it to JPs hardware, if necessary.
- [X] If this is something Fumi is needed for or would really help with, have her turn DS maintenance over to Hotsuin's people (it should be stable enough) and poach her for it.
- [X] Focus on getting a civilian-usable Harmonizer program without the Demon-Summoning part. (Random civilians summoning demons is probably enough of a problem, thanks to Nicaea; there's no need to compound it further.)
[X] Meditate. Acquire Occult 3 and Occult 4.
[X] Complete repairs of the Dragon Seal.
[X] Augment the Dragon Seal to create sunlight and a diurnal cycle.
[X] Figure out how to augment the Dragon Seal to eject, repress, or hobble demonic enemies without causing charas or allied demons any harm.
- [X] There is no need to implement it unless it would be very simple to implement; instead, delegate it to Fumi and her staff. It's important, but so is everything else.
[X] Respond to the next crisis, whatever it is. (Baughn: I'm going to treat this one as an interrupt signal.)

Exaltation Actions:
[X] Take a closer look at the universe around you.
[X] Attempt to improve Dream-to-Reality Methodology given Amu's new level of Occult competence.

Baughn: You can't do both, not at the same time. Do you want it to be in order? If so, don't expect the second action to start for a while.

I don't think we need Lore 5 or Occult 5 immediately; they'll take an extra 2 hours, and getting them is potentially stressful on our Charas. (citation) We can already get dicepools of 16 without them, and that's without channeling a Virtue or a bonus from very skilled assistants.

Solar Parser Efficiency is a maybe, if it would help us significantly with the task; is a no-go. I don't think negating a -2 penalty is really enough to worry about when we can half make that up for that with a Virtue channel or a bit of intense study. (If it were more like -4, that would be another matter.)

This will be a colossal update. Would you prefer for me to post it in chunks, or all at a time?

Pros for the former:
- It gives you a chance to react / adjust to conditions, as opposed to leaving it all to my own judgement of what constitutes an interrupt.
- Less waiting.

Pros for the latter:
- Overall higher quality.

Also, please clarify Exa's actions.

Battle of Ishioka, final results

- 1 reconnaissance squad from the 1st Airborne, lost to friendly fire.
- ~200 soldiers from the 32nd Regiment, presumed killed while evacuating Ishioka.

Civilian losses
- Estimated 15,000, largely in Ishioka.

Well, I figured at the very least, since we know what Ran knows, this would give us an idea of what's happening with the Angel cordon and Merak defenses without having to spend Amu-time on being briefed. (And likewise for the un-evacuation/infrastructure from Su: she'd be running on raw Intelligence, since I'm sure she doesn't have Bureaucracy either, but letting us know what's going on so we can assist in broad strokes is probably important.)

If I thought we could project the effect of our War Excellency to Ran, I'd have said that, too; but I don't think the mechanics allow for it. (Yet? TODO: investigate a permanent charm which allows our Awakened charas to use our charms. The requirement for the Second War Excellency is only Ess 1 War 1, after all.) As is, she can still throw 7 dice at the problem; that's not Dawn-level competence, but it's not half bad.

... I admit that getting anyone to listen to a one-inch-tall mildly rambunctious sprite might be a bit more difficult, but she does have people to vouch for her. Also, if worse comes to worst, she can actually get out there and fight, even without a Harmonizer.

(EDIT: Also, now that I think about it, Merak defenses and individual-demon-incident defenses are likely to overlap a lot.)

(Baughn: Much to the terror of Lt. Kato, you sort of do.)
... why, is our staff Lt. Kato?

(Baughn: One point in Socialize does not equate to... but you're not wrong.)
Well, I figured an idol would have a dot or three in Socialize anyway; Su would presumably be providing an Attribute boost rather than an Ability boost.

(Baughn: I'm going to treat this one as an interrupt signal.)
Pretty much. I'll be amazed if we get that far without a crisis showing up, honestly.

Baughn: You can't do both, not at the same time. Do you want it to be in order? If so, don't expect the second action to start for a while.
Uh. Hmm.

If the Occult 2 variant isn't complete by the time Amu gets Occult 4, then obviously we're just going to keep working on DtRM.

If it is complete, look at the fundamental substrata of the world first. We'll almost certainly want to use the knowledge we get from that to improve DtRM anyway; there's no point in assembling the Charm three times.

Hn... I wonder... It kinda looks like "throw what is on hand" party with no proper hierarchy. Especially with Cookie-cutters of major name at the lead.

Speaking of hierarchy as far as MegaTen multiverse go it probably would be:

0. Various affiliated demons
1. Angel - named - Shamshel, Daniel (explicitely better than normal angels, but weaker than archangels); cookie-cutters - Cassiel
2. Archangel - named - Cassiel; cookie-cutters - Remiel
3. Principality
4. Power
5. Virtue
6. Dominion - named and unique - Lailah
7. Throne
8. Cherub
9. Seraphim - named and unique - Kazfiel, Haniel, Raphael, Metatron, Michael, Uriel, Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, Sariel, Remiel
10. Well, YHWH, duh

Not sure where cookie-cutters of Big Names would be, probably somewhere on Dominion-Cherub level.

NOTE: put those of dubious status as Seraphim (equivalents) as in games they are higher-hitters than rest of hierarchy even if myth they are angels/archangels and not Seraphim. EDIT: though as with Lailah they may be on Dominion - Cherub level, but Angel or Archangel? With that power? Naah.

As faction of ORDER!!!111 any proper invasion would probably have proper hierarchy with each rank represented up to commander who is in best case would be Cherub or powerful cookie-cutter of one of Seraphim... at worst on of big names personally. Let's hope Cherub. Because hoping that there wouldn't be another invasion is kinda hopeless...

According to the SMT wiki, Lailah is ranked as a Dominion.

In Devil Survivor and Devil Survivor 2 specifically, though, the three lowest-level demons of the Divine race are Angel, Power, and Lailah.

EDIT: Also, some of the specific angels you name are Grigori or Watchers, a rank below Angel (from Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku only).

EDITS 2&3: In most of the mainline SMT titles (including SMT III), the various named Angels are of the Herald race rather than the Divine race.

He's been assigned to keep track of you.

It's not the same as having a staff, as he isn't under your command per se, but he also isn't stupid. He is, however, terrified of what might happen if he does a bad job, or even just if someone assumes he has.

Being told that you had disappeared was not the best moment of his day. That he wasn't there is only a limited relief, since nobody is about to tell Makoto it's her fault.

As I noted - Order is about Order. By wiki lists they are more powerful than normal Angels in games, so I presume they are Grigori commanders from the higher rank which would be, well, Angel.

Forgot to respond to this... but no strong preference, in my case.

On second thought, I'm not sure how anyone would have stopped Ran from helping. One way or another.

Their faction is called Law, not Order. The former doesn't imply the latter. Ask any lawyer. :p

Can Charas push attributes/abilities beyond 5? If we bought archery to 5, would Ran then have an archery rating of 6?

Prior post from Baughn on the subject:
That's... hard to say. I'll have to figure it out if it happens.

Probably not. Improving Amu's base score forwhere her charas have a bonus may reduce the bonus, to whatever degree her improved understanding of the field overlaps with the chara's. It's not a straight addition, that's a short-term shorthand.
Though I vaguely recall there being some sort of formula involving increases to Essence levels from multiple Chara merges that he wrote, and which might have influenced that... but I can't seem to find it. @_@

Will look again later. After sleep.

Σai1.5 = a1.5, although that was really just a rough approximation:

They add, but the curve is polynomial with an exponent of ~1.5.

So let's say you have four dots of essence; this equates to eight "points" of essence, while Miki only has one. If you're merged you end up with nine, which is still short of the.. 11.18 needed for five dots.

I'm not actually doing that kind of math, mind you, but that should be fairly close to the way I think about it.

And since you're discussing raising attributes above 5 in particular, I'll note that it would require an E5 Amu combined with all four charas, where she already has attributes at 5 on her own. It's a suitably high bar that I won't object to the outcome if you somehow pull it off.

Ah! There it is, thank you!

Hm, in a way, given that E5 Amu with all four Chara Changes active would go up to E6 (assuming all Charas are at E1; things quickly get crazy if they're higher), and at E6 you can buy up Attributes to 6 normally...
...it's actually comparable to a Primordial capbreaker whose requirement is "in Amulet Fortune mode". So yeah, a fun thing in itself, but not super mega broken, especially since it requires not having four additional Amus around.

And it might even cause less limit than Glory to the Most High. Maybe. Eventually.
...well it's not much worse than the Malfeas one.

(Yes, I like to math for fun ;>_>)
