Had a elf ancestor sometime in the past but they are not really that important. Being able to repair things with magic is convienet if we are joining warfare duties later.

I like the idea of discovering the past, but in a more mellow way than OMG, halp, who am I? Plus the elven blood popping out of seemingly nowhere intrigues me. Like your kid somehow coming out with red hair and despite having two brunette parents.

Yes, if you like. In that sense, they're in-character, just not part of the official continuity.
