I do love how all the ninja in this story are so blatantly nonfunctional in anything but killdeathmurdersteal or preparation for the killdeathmurdersteal. It hits that comedy aspect of casual dystopia really well.
I wouldn't go as far as to say all but I do get what you mean, I think, and I do agree. A big theme is that every step into proper ninja-hood takes you further and further from a normal civilian life.
Even as a Genin, even with so much higher charm and a much greater ability to understand the social realm than she had even a few months ago; Sakura is left completely unable to properly adapt to a casual civilian environment that she should by all means thrive in.

Meanwhile, characters like Ino that haven't embraced Ninjahood nearly as much are still perfectly fine in society.
On her own, it just makes Sakura seem dumb, but when you consider it in the grander scheme of events...

Well I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm glad it's still funny.

In most ninja villages, Sakura would be totally fine. It's only Konoha that mingles that much with civilians, thus creating situations where being a murderbunny is inappropriate. In Mist, no one would care. She'd just be one of the many crazies and not even the worst one.

From an efficiency point of view, Konoha is assigning her the wrong missions most of the time. Instead they should play to her strengths and have her hunt down bandits, missing nin and other enemies. Throw in some assassinations, sabotage and destruction and she'll come back with a flawless mission success.

Of course, that might backfire once they realize that she's become too powerful to control but that's kinda true for almost all the elite jonin, too. You just have to trust that they stay loyal. If someone like Kakashi ever went rogue, then the list of people who could hunt him down would be rather short.

Give it a few more months and Sakura might play in the same league, and as long as she stays loyal to the village, it would be a massive benefit. A new jonin at that age? With barely any resources invested by the village? That's a great deal.

I think it would be long term harmful to Sakura's development for her to only be given these types of missions. In shinobi society ninjas are tools, but a good craftsman (the Hokage) knows how to take care of their tools.

Because Sakura doesn't actually receive exp in that way, sending her on forceful kill quests rapid fire doesn't necessarily result in rapid growth outside of the skills directly used to achieve the kill.

That being said, she'd definitely get some kick ass loot that way. Sakura's seriously lacking in the loot department, the best item she has was given to her in one of the first few chapters.

Konoha did that one to themselves. There are five major villages and countless minor ones all competing for those high-profile, expensive jobs. In a time of peace and prosperity, where people generally have better things to invest in than outright violence. The job market for high-end ninja work is completely saturated by great ninja war veterans who command high income by sheer pedigree and isn't looking to grow anytime soon.

Canon Side-Story: Ino And The System: Feelings of Inadequacy
We get a lot of Sakura in this story but how often do we get Ino's perspective?
This one was voted on by the $10 patrons. They always are. Once a week, it's great. They had a powerful selection this week, and went with this.
This is the last side story I needed to make up so, the next one should be next Wednesday barring sudden inspiration.
Enjoy. Patreon/Discord link: Sendicard/WitchAtTheEnd | Linktree

Sweat drips down Ino's brow, her breaths heavy, her body sluggish and her movements forced through limbs that feel like lead. A month of training, so much time put into mastering even the most basics and she finds herself staring down at a simple number with a frown on her thin lips. Party Contribution level: 16.

It's a meaningless number, but it was fifteen when she first stumbled across Sakura's system core. It would not be an understatement to say that the deep glowing object nestled in between memories taunted her to place her hand on it, and while on the surface she was calm the numbers themselves toyed with her. Sakura's score was so much higher, and they were so close to each-other not that long ago. She thought it'd be reasonable to expect her number to go up noticeably if she put in some real effort. Effort like this, effort that makes her skin look glazed and makes her hair stick to her face and back. She figured she'd improve drastically from putting in enough heart into her training that her teammates hate her a little, and she's stuck accepting their criticisms for what they are; truths.

A big part of her sessions with Sakura has been focusing on the concept that Sakura is quite strong for a Genin, possibly bordering on Chunin, maybe even Jonin in some circumstances if that one memory she saw is accurate. She's had to go over the idea that Sakura's single minded focus on improvement to the point of personal sacrifice is harmful if not outright self destructive. Ino knows it's probably hypocritical to give Sakura so much stress over her inhuman desire to watch these numbers go up when she herself is checking them after every single training session in the hopes of seeing the slightest blip.

But it's different with Sakura. From what she can tell, Sakura suffers from a lack of self worth at a core level. Her obsession with gaming that once felt harmless if not frivolous became recontextualized the instant she started doing stuff like jumping through fire to get a hit off. She's not using gaming because she enjoys it - though she does - she's using gaming to escape her own lack of self value. She feels good when the numbers go up, and she feels bad when she goes without that constant praise. Ninja training is about long arduous journeys and practicing over and over until you get it right, it just doesn't have the kind of feedback Sakura's unique brain requires. Sakura takes everyday without achieving something as a personal failure, and over time that's led to her self value being so below the floor she doesn't even realize that others would care if her reckless behavior got her killed. Perspective matters, and Sakura lacks it.

Some of that is absolutely speculation and she'd snicker if someone suggested she was completely right in every aspect, but she's sure enough of most of it that she submitted a formal statement that Sakura should be given a vacation and continue to have sessions with her. That report, highlighting that Sakura has such a low sense of self that she might recklessly jump in front of a killing blow for her friends - no, she has and would do it again - is what allowed everyone else who contributed in the final decision to do so while informed. Whether she's completely correct, or only partially correct, she is sure that Sakura's obsession with the numbers goes well beyond a simple desire to watch them go up after putting in her efforts.

"Still so weak…" Her pout overtakes her features, her entire body shakes with every breath as she slowly makes a shaky stand from her place in the dirt on her hands and knees. She can't help but feel like reality isn't linking up with her perception. There has to be something else here, unless these numbers are a much bigger deal than she thinks. The first thing she had to do was test to make sure the system would reflect her efforts instead of Sakura's perception. That was simple, she just had to hide her training from Sakura. Lying to her crush and saying that she hasn't really given it much thought hurt her, because Sakura deserves her complete honesty.

But after seeing a number go up without Sakura's influence and confirming that she was indeed better in that area than the last time she checked, it became clear.

She's not training hard enough. Clan techniques are powerful, and the Ino-Shika-Chou team dynamic should keep her out of harm's way, but Sakura was definitely weaker than her when they graduated the Academy. Sakura being twelve levels above her in such a short time proves that hard work can make the difference. She's watched Sakura play enough RPG to know that each level means more than the one before it, and even if it's using some kind of equation to solve for level from the stats directly, the stats probably mean more with each number too. Sakura's hasn't risen to just under twice her strength in just a few short months. Sakura has left her side and become something else entirely with barely a look back to see the flames she's leaving in her trail. How is she supposed to stand hand in hand with the person she loves if she's left behind before she's even informed there's a race in the first place? If Sakura could progress like this, why wasn't she crowned a ninja genius and fast tracked through the academy like many before her?

It's not fair. She's done everything she can to stand by her, she's given her a smile every time she's looked sad, she's coached her through countless difficult situations, she even spent countless hours reading Sakura's advanced textbooks while Sakura was gaming so that she wouldn't fall behind too much academically. Fat lot of good that did, what with Sakura's mental statistics being so far ahead it's worse than the difference in their Charm stats. Is she dumb? Is that what she was supposed to take from that? Does Sakura make her look as bad intellectually as Ino makes Sakura look socially?

She's started trying to learn higher vocabulary. Knowing she wasn't as smart as Sakura or Shikamaru was one thing, seeing just how far behind she is? Shattering. She feels stupid.

She can pull up Sakura's stats just as easily as she can her own. She wonders if Sakura can do the same with her own stats, and if so, if she's figured that out yet. It's no secret that she thinks about her friend a lot more than Sakura thinks about her, so it's possible she missed that she could look at her like that…

She's avoided actually looking at Sakura's stats because she's pretty sure it'll be disheartening, but today marks the thirty day anniversary of asking Asuma to help push them so it's time she does. She has to know if she's still falling behind despite working her team well past their lazy limits.

A simple flicker of Sakura's stats in front of her eyes is enough to drop her to her knees.
111.

Sakura's mental, or Mind as Sakura's system seems to use them interchangeably, has gone up nine points since she last checked. Ino hasn't gone up nine points period. A quick look at the rest of the stats and their improvements have her gritting her teeth.

Her hand flickers through it, and the system swipes away from this world with the heat of her anger. Her fingers feel as if they're aflame, sharp and discriminating. She wishes she didn't have the ability to check on Sakura's stats at all, why does she have to know she's behind?

"Okay, fuck that." She surmises to herself. There is genuinely no way she can catch up to Sakura.

Sakura can't do missions. Sakura isn't receiving proper training because her teacher is a lazy selfish asshat. Asuma is happily giving them countless lessons, invigorated by their sudden intensity and desire to learn. Getting them invigorated was a trial and a half. Choji just needed to be bribed, but getting Shikamaru to put effort in was probably harder than the actual training is. Still, with his help and cooperation, Asuma has given them so much to work with. Blood, sweat, tears, she's given them all in her quest to merely touch the growth rate the brightest light in her eyes has accomplished.

Sakura has grown three times as much as her while sitting in class and doing some nightly training. She's given everything she can bear under a powerful sensei that cares, and she feels stagnant. Is she not trying hard enough? Is Asuma not doing enough?

No. She finishes her shaky stand, looking back at her downed teammates. They're dripping sweat themselves, laid down in the dirt to her side and gasping for air. They're doing the healthy maximum, anymore would be far too much. Focusing too much on the numbers would clearly be harmful to someone's mental health. Focusing on the numbers as little as she is, is clearly causing her to go beyond her own recommendations. Maybe she should stop looking at them, give them up and continue life as if she never touched the core?

But what about when it's not the numbers that she's focusing on, but the clear reality that she's pathetic? Her breath stalls itself in her throat.

Sakura's a genius, she always knew that, but she's not just a rich girl from a powerful clan, she's a freaking heiress. She should be able to keep up when she puts in the effort, she shouldn't be like this. Her fist clenches, her nails dig into her skin, and she holds back self scathing tears. Is it this system? Does it want her to be that far from Sakura? Is the distance between them artificial and forced along, some kind of effort to isolate her and make her stand alone? Is Sakura, even now, putting in so much single minded and self sacrificial focus into her training that no one sane could ever keep up? Is her understanding of her best a lie she's fostered because of her own fears and insecurities? Could she have done better, and her own complacency let it all flow out between her fingers?

"Ino, you're bleeding." Shikamaru's droll voice sounds so bored, but it's informative and well timed. Another second and her nails might have caused a wound that needed actual healing. She releases her fist and looks down at the dribble of red that flows towards the dirt below her.

"Only inside, Shika." She mumbles, looking up at the sky he holds so dear and wondering if Sakura is doing the same while doing some training that she would consider frankly absurd.

What in the hell is she supposed to do? Everyone always seems to expect her to know, but she's not Shikamaru or Sakura, she doesn't know anything.

Quest Alert: Stand Up
Description: Prove you deserve to stand beside her. Get Team 10s Party Contribution Level to an average of 22 by the upcoming Exams
Objective: 18/22 Party Contribution Level
Reward: The Chance to Help Save Sakura

Great, she's probably the weakest on her team as well, what the hell! Shika's so freaking lazy, why is he higher? This system is stupid!

Then her eyes land on the reward. None of the rewards she's seen so far have actually been real rewards, if there was even a reward in that slot at all. But somehow, she can't help but stare at those words with grave focus and wonder. What if that's real?

Why would Sakura need saving during the exams?
Will someone else step up if she doesn't, or will she stand helplessly by and watch her fall?
"We need to do it again." Ino growls under her breath at them, giving them a bright eyed glare that brooks no argument.

"Ino, we've already gone through this exercise ten times today, let's break-"

"Asuma, please." She watches her sensei spring into action.
She won't find out the answer to what happens if she fails, she'll get high enough level. Sakura was right, she'll do what she must even if it hurts. Time to take after her friend a little, behind her back of course. No need to validate her harmful behavior.

Er... I didn't get what it was Sakura failed in the scholl sidestory
A necromancy attempt failed on something important.
That's really all the context that's needed here.
It was on an Inuzuka dog, but that's not super necessary to the side story.

Basically she was unable to resurrect one of the dogs, so it stayed dead while she had the explicit power to stop that.
She just had to watch its soul escape.

I knew that the explicit scene that's being referenced there was only on patreon at the moment but when creating the poll option I didn't realize that while totally possible to put it together, it'd actually take some measurable effort.

You know Sakura practiced necromancy on the Inuzuka dogs because of Necromancy 2 and the fact that she has a freaking dog.
But nothing else really says "most of her early tests were about the dogs"

Hot take: telling her the power level she'll require to be plot relevant the next time shit hits the fan is pretty helpful.

My headcanon is that the system said there would be consequences for showing Ino, but didn't say what they would be because it didn't know so it decided to just be ominous.

We should all endeavor to express our overwhelming uncertainty by being incredibly ominous.

"They ruined my fun." Sakura huffs, channeling her will in an effort to resist throwing a shoe at their captures. She stands by the fact that she doesn't want to hurt them, well she does actually she wants to hurt them quite a bit, but she doesn't want to see them hurt. Her emotions are complicated, okay? "I bought a freaking sand board and I can't even use it."

"That's your concern?" Sasuke asks her, a little bit of amusement in his tone. She's always a source of comedy for him, it's so rude. At least someone's smiling. "There's an organization of assassins after you."

"Well, yeah, I've kinda gotten used to people trying to kill me after the dungeon runs. Ooh, you think there's a dungeon in Suna?" She asks excitedly, her eyes glimmering with sudden glee. "I could bring Gaara, I bet he'd have fun."

"Don't even think about it." Naruto scolds her from wherever he's sitting, somewhere out of her sight, who even knows. She's too busy moping to check on him... "We're way farther than Wave, it'd probably be like level thirty-something."

"Yeah…" Sakura can't deny that, Suna's dungeon would probably be ridiculous. That's a part of her sadness about being trapped indoors though, she was looking forward to seeing what high level random encounter loot is like! She got that cool stone from goblins of all things, Suna's probably got like giant sand worms or something! They probably have a cool new sword, or a hammer, or maybe even a drill! Excitement aside, the reminder of the original dungeon is enough to remind her to check on Wave. It's doing fine as always, everything's in the positive. Resources are building, food's stabilized, imports have increased as have exports, and while a good amount of their consumer goods are still coming from outside and are therefore a huge expense, the fact that most of their food is gotten from the natural resources around is a huge relief on import costs. At this point she can start taking from the coffers if she absolutely needs something, though she can't touch them for wants. Maybe in another few months she'll feel comfortable using her land for personal gain, but even then, shouldn't she build up a savings so she can handle emergencies?

She's had them exporting wooden sculptures and the like, they even have a replica of the great Sakura bridge which other places apparently buy up like candy. It's odd, but she can't help but appreciate it. Maybe she should check around Suna and see if there are any stores that sell one? If she can get away from Gaara to find a craft shop, that is.

Oh, then there's the stature of her they've built in town square, which is just way too much. But upgrading it increases the rate at which her and Wave's fame increases, which is apparently an important mechanic later on. So she's already got it upgraded to stone. Given most of Wave works in carpentry and not stone, upgrading it was kind of expensive. That being said, she should probably upgrade it again soon, if not now. The resources are technically available, she just has to liquidate some things they don't need and have them imported from the trade… How that works, she has no idea, she should look into that sometime. It's gotta be using real world systems, since it's altering the real world on a grand scale. Her little thing with Wave is probably in the logbooks of a hundred different lords across the elemental nations. They'd have no idea it's the work of a genin girl from Konoha.

"Hey, Naruto, I've been meaning to ask you." She finally wills herself to look over at the blond boy, only to find him doing a handstand on the table.

"Yeah?" He asks like he's doing nothing odd, and honestly, she gets it. She spends exactly one second judging him before she too is doing a handstand, though hers is on the floor like a normal person.

"Did you leave some clones in Wave?" She asks, using her finger to move the map over to an odd cluster of workers that live in a freaking cave. It's difficult to handstand on one hand, but nowhere near as hard as it should be. Her body feels almost weightless recently, her stats are broken and she's getting the feeling that their increases aren't linear. She doesn't feel three times stronger than when she started, she feels several magnitudes stronger.

"Yeah," he admits with a bit of a sheepish expression that catches her off guard, "why?"

"Well, it raises mechanical questions. They get a lot done, they're really efficient, but I can't give them orders like everyone else," She explains, looking over the Wave map with a pensiveness that she's found herself with a lot recently, "thank you by the way."

"No problem, it was important to you." He beams at her, giving her a thumbs up that would make all her woes go away if her main woe wasn't insidious levels of boredom. It seems that he too can do a handstand with one hand, that makes sense though, he's probably still stronger than her.

"I can't influence them," she explains, "which raises questions to what constitutes someone I can influence. I thought it was just people in Wave but I can't do anything to tourists, then I thought maybe it was inhabitants of Wave, but your clones would count at this point. It's been months."

"They're not living in Wave though, just a cave," He points out while bending his lone supporting arm's elbow to show off just how much motion control his body has, it's ridiculous, "maybe if you expanded the town until it included where they are?"

"Maybe…" She ponders that, nibbling on the side of her lip in thought. "They're helpful, but since I can't direct them, they're not nearly as helpful as I'd like. Maybe if I could communicate what I need…"

"Maybe you should learn clones and leave one to direct them." Naruto teases her.

"I wish, not everyone can slurp up infinite Chakra like you can." She shakes her head, her hair not liking the mix of movement and gravity, and falling in her face. "I bet I could make a shadow clone at this point but making it semi-permanent? No way."

It takes her a moment to realize the gravity of the words she said so casually, but Naruto grasps it instantly. He grows deathly still for a moment before looking at Sasuke, who's been silently reading a book and making no notice of them whatsoever. "You have infinite chakra, what about it?" Sasuke asks, matching Naruto's gaze with one of his own, "was I not supposed to notice?"

"Err…" Sakura can't help but feel like that's fair, but what about Naruto? Now she feels bad for letting that slip so casually, and everything is awkward.

"Over here, no you- ugh…" Tazuna's found his work is a lot harder recently. While the thriving of his home giving him too much work is a good problem to have, and he would be hard pressed to complain, it's been sixty hour weeks consistently for a while now. He could take a break, but who knows when work will be this plentiful again? The opportunity cost to sitting down and relaxing is tremendous, besides, he's in his third prime.

"Why do you even want to turn the statue gold?" Tsunami asks, standing by Tazuna's side and looking up at the giant stone statue of Sakura in the center of the village. It's glorious, if not a little dramatic. That demonic katana is six times the size it should be, and she's broader in stature than she was, and that mustache. The request to turn it to stone even included a line about making sure the big comical mustache on her face stayed… It was actually the hardest part of the statue. "That feels a little excessive."

"It just feels like the right thing to do." The old man shrugs, looking up at it.

"Seriously?" His daughter's brow raises while she clearly questions his sanity.

"No," his laughter fills the air, "I got a work order for it."

"Who commissioned that?" She asks, "there's no way that girl has that much money."

"That, I don't know." The bridge builder shakes his head, looking over his materials as they're dropped off next to the statue by big burly men that arrived at the docks not too long ago. To think it only took two tries to get them to find the right location. His old joints can't be dragging materials all over the place, let alone gold, it needs to be right here. He's also worried about how gold will handle the elements, but he supposes that's not really his problem. "But it is fully paid for, and the materials have been delivered, so…"

"The commission form has no name?" Tsunami asks him.

"It does, it just says Lord." He shrugs, shaking his head. "It's like someone went to make their character in one of Inari's games, but forgot to actually put their name when prompted."

"Huh." One of Inari's games, referring not to the gameboy Sakura gave him, but to the games on the computer they bought him. They've had a lot of money recently, let it not be said that things have been bad in Wave. "It's totally Sakura." Tsunami contradicts herself with a sudden decision, before wandering off.

"What do you mean it's totally Sakura? How?! She's like twelve!"

"Naruto, can you read?" It's a left field question, but sometimes Sakura's feeling left field, and the issue has been bothering her for a while. Ever since he called Chakra, Chatora, the possibility that he is illiterate has sat rent free in her mind. Sure he seems to pick up on words when they play games together, but it's not like those are complicated.

"What-Sakura, yes, you've seen me reading, multiple times!" The boy gawks at her, mouth halfway ajar.

"No, I've seen you look at text before, I've never seen you relay the information to me." She says, crossing her arms to give him a stern gaze. "There are two parts to reading, looking at it, and comprehending."

"Kakashi's been teaching me." Naruto admits, looking away awkwardly.

"Like he taught me how to make my own jutsu?" She rolls her eyes at that idea.
"Or how he's taught me advanced Kenjutsu?"

"He did, didn't he?" Naruto asks, "you seem pretty good at it."

"No, he gave me the bare minimum and then disappeared like the world's most underpaid tutor." She deadpans at him with all of her willpower. "Naruto, I'm gonna ask again, can you read?"

"I know the basics… I already did before he started, he uh, put a beginners book in my hand and walked away."

"Oh, honey…" Sakura sucks in air through clenched teeth, slowly trying to figure out how to even respond to that. A lot of their game based communication issues make a lot more sense now. She genuinely thought he kinda just sucked. She's just been happy to have someone to play with! "Okay, let's go find a book so I can fix that."

"Sakura, I can read." He groans as she drags him away by the hand. "We play games all the time, there's tons of reading in games, I barely mess it up."

"I don't want 'I can read the tooltips', I want 'I can read well enough to come up with advanced strategies'!" She scolds, using her fingers on one hand for the quotes on the fly. "We're learning today!"

"Well I mean, do I really need to know all that fancy stuff? Business Naruto does." He says.

"Business… Naruto." She whirls around and stares at him, truly, takes him in for a moment. From the shape of his nose, to the way his eyes sparkle, she takes him in with a new light. He might be the world's biggest idiot, this is a monumental moment for her. "If he knows it, shouldn't you know it?"

"Well, errr, he's been alive for months, I'm scared to pop him." Naruto admits.

"What do you mean you haven't popped him!?" Sakura shrieks, true fear enters her eyes for a moment. He's her brother, not the biggest dumbass to ever live! She needs to remember that! Except she's not remembering that, she's just scared for him. When did his last brain cells leave? Can they find them? Maybe they haven't fled the country yet!

"Well I mean, then he wouldn't be there to do Business Naruto stuff?" He says, using the hand she doesn't have in her grip to tickle his whisker marks a little.

"So remake him after you pop him." She shudders. "That's what I thought you've been doing this entire time!" Never mind, his ability to read is not the biggest concern right now. He's both a dumbass and her brother! She's still going to teach him some comprehension and vocab with her time here, since they're both trapped with little to do, but first she needs to teach him common sense use cases with his own freaking jutsu!

imagine if Business Naruto gets popped, but the length of time caused him to generate his own soul.

now Kurama has company until Naruto remakes him
