A martial arts tech tree sounds hilarious. "We have given you millions and funding the most advanced facilities we have available. Show us what you invented." "Gentlemen, may I present to you, karate."
You did get a pretty neat synergy between weapons and martial arts, but to be fair there were synergies for literally every combo of personal specializations and favored specializations.
Updates gonna be out pretty late tomorrow because I got family coming in, so to tide yall over, would anyone be interested in me posting short blurbs of the synergies for options that didn't win?

...Probably best not to, partially because some of them we can work up to, while anything that's gone for good, as I understand it, is only going to serve as a salt-fest...
There's a part of me that wonders if Questing might be better served by simply handing the players a character concept and developing that character as a general rule, to avoid chargen salt shrinking a playerbase...

Hero Units, as the name suggests, are special. They're the ogres that stand head and shoulders above the rest of their kin, rising above the common rabble to be the exemplars of ogrekind, the leaders, the visionaries, the champions, and half a dozen other things.
In other words, hero units are the ogres that get names.
Now, in the case of Grabthar, these hero units are going to be his research assistants, ogres that've been placed under his control by his Tyrant to help him out. They're the ogres that aren't the dumb muscle, researchers in their own right.
Mechanically, Hero Units start out with two tech trees; one from the base three (Gut Magic, Weaponry, Mourne Beasts), and one personal tech tree, which can be basically anything. Both of these start out at TL 2.
Now, the reason I'm telling you this instead of just putting it in the mechanics post (Which I'm working on, I swear it'll be finished soon), is that my betas, @Xantalos and @Swordomatic, have convinced/pressured me to open up hero unit creation to you, the players.
Now, I will say, I do have the hero units on my end (mostly) done, and an update could definitely happen today. But Swordo and Xantalos are way more experienced with this stuff than I am, so I'm gonna just follow their advice.
Now, here's how Hero Unit creation is going to work. You choose one of the three base specialties, choose any personal specialty, and do a small bit of lore, and you have yourself a hero unit.
To help you out, I'll post two of the hero units I have for the next update, so that you have something to reference.
It's common knowledge in ogre society (or, whatever ogres have that passes for a society) that Firebellies are all fucking insane. Skagg Burninator is perhaps the best example of this, being a Firebelly who, when gifted power over magma and heat, decided that the best use of his new ability was hammering metal into shapes. But, weirdly enough, his crazy paid off. See, Skagg managed to figure out basic metalworking, and nowadays he makes weapons and armor (and also a few rough cannons) for anyone who gives him enough food. Of course, after discovering blasting powder, Skagg went on a week-long rampage through the Mountains that ended after your Tyrant punched him in the gut and decided that he could be useful. Now Skagg works for you, far out of the way of anything important to your Tyrant.
Gnoblars. Every tribe and every ogre has at least a few, little green goblin things that do whatever an ogre tells them to do. Most ogres, you included, don't really think too much about em, they're just kinda there. Not Kurg Gnobwrangler. See, while most ogres look at gnoblars and see em as nothing more than servants and food, Kurg looked at em and saw… well, still servants and food yeah, but more than that, Kurg saw potential. A pretty good beastpuncher already, Kurg wondered what would happen if he tried beastpunching a Gnoblar. The resulting fallout destroyed a mountain, killed half a tribe, and had Greasus fucking Goldtooth himself say that he'd eat anyone who talked about it. What it also did was cause Kurg to start figuring exactly what the fuck was up with Orcs and Goblins, and now, working for you and far away from anything valuable, he's become a pretty good expert on em.
Now I will say, don't feel pressured or anything to create hero units, if I get zero I'll just shrug and post my finished update. If I get some that aren't vetoed because they're too powerful or just don't work for the setting, I'll include them in the vote.
This creation phase is going to be open for about a day, during which time I'll finish the mechanics post and get the rest of the hero unit update done so I can post it tomorrow.
Gulbash Farseer
Gutmagic (TL2), Scrying (TL 2)
There are some scholars who say that the Great Maw was simply a meteorite, and that worship of it as a god is a sign of the Ogre's simplistic intelligence. The Butchers know different. Gulbash especially knows, for in his youth he reenacted the journey of Groth Onefinger, and made a pilgrimage to the great hole in the earth where the dread deity of the Ogres manifests. What he saw when he looked into the Maw imprinted itself in his eyes, and in order to gain true knowledge of it, he tore his own eyes out of his face and ate them, replacing them with stones. While blind, he is strong in Gut Magic and can use it to see farther and more truly than most, and he has chosen to enter your service, for he sees something unusual in you.

Vasgh Burn-Back
Gut Mgaic (TL2), Scrying (TL 2)
Most Ogres see fire as nothing more than a minor amusement soemthing that human peasants wave at them to try (and fail) to have thm nott be eaten or as a mere tool to cook their meals to make them taste better. To Vasgh though these Ogres are fools lacking any imagination. For in his own rather fire addled mind he sees the truth. Long hours does he rant and rave about the true divine nature of fire, how it it's through wood and flesh almost as well as any Ogre could. He regales you with tales of how it helps Ogres in their Maw demanded task of eating. He even says, that when he sits before the cooking fires he sometimes sees thing in the flames, this is all nonsense of course. To a rational mind such as yours it's preposterous but insane as he may be Vasgh is still useful. He is skilled in Magic and even if his claims of seeing visions in fire are nonsense. That doesn't change that some of them come true. (not that you'd tell him that)

Firebelly magic isn't one of the core tech trees, so I'm gonna have to veto this one unfortunately.
You can't have a hero unit without one core tech tree.
Rotgut Yellowhand
Gutmagic (TL 2), Alchemy (TL 2)
In the mind of most Ogres, the tribe's Butchers are emissaries of their revered, and feared god the Great Maw first, and cooks second. But such was not the case for Rotgut as even when he was a small lad he revered the Butchers of the tribe in their role as cooks above all seeking to emulate them by specially preparing the rocks he ate in his own little cook pot. As the lad grew older his emulation turned to genuine practition leading to him becoming one of the premier cooks of his tribe and learning proper gutmagic only so he could expand the range of ingredients he could acquire for his cooking. It was this lust for new ingredients that lead to him discovering his second love in the form of alchemy as he raided a traveling caravan for new ingredients only to discover a wagon full of alchemy texts a new ingredient that just like all others he was more than happy to test. The knowledge this feast imparted upon him has taken Rotgut's cooking to the next level and has synergized especially well with his gutmagic allowing for as of yet unheard of effects... not all of them good considering no fewer than four of his apprentices have exploded well eating one of his new concoctions.

Khagra Rateater
Most Ogres consider the Skaven to be annoying to fight and somewhat bland as far as meat goes, though Khagra, as a dedicated Butcher, believes this to only be a challenge to her cooking skills. Khagra believes that the preparation of food is just as important as the consumption of it and as a Butcher of the Great Maw who is considered a likely candidate for Slaughtermaster she definitely wishes to prove it. The large amounts of Skaven corpses left after battles have allowed her to have a great degree of experimentation on what is usually considered a bland dinner and even the most arrogant Bruisers in the tribe freely admit that she is the best damn cook anyone of them have ever come across. She assured the Tyrant that the few willing to challenge her on this count only ended up on that nights dinner table by coincidence, not that the Tyrant or his wife were complaining: As Khagra gained much experience in making the best out of poor food, she can create downright incredible flavors out of good food. A side effect of her preferred targets of Skaven clans have been that she has gained an interest in how Skaven weapons function, particularly the mad genius of Great Clan Skryre and its vassals. After all, if such weapons can be turned to her use, it would allow her to reach their warrens and the walled homes of other races better. Tech Trees: Gut Magic (TL2), Skaven Science (TL2)

Yeah, gender ain't really important so I'm fine with whatever on that front. I will say that skaven science is wayyyy too op to be a viable tech tree. Warpstone would be fine though
Replace firebelly magic with gut magic, seeing as Vasgh's thing is learning from butchers
Id suggest replacing scrying, but firebelly stuff and gut magic are fundamentally incompatible
Gak Ghostpuncher Mourne Beasts (TL 2), Necromancy (TL 2)
Gak was once thought to be nothing more than a Beastpuncher who's eyes didn't work right. That is, until he punched a beast to death, and brought its ghost back with him. Gak happily lived in his tribe finding new ghosts to tame, and new living things to turn into ghosts, until an unfortunate accident that resulted in the death of his tribe, and three moderately haunted mountains.

Her observations gave her the catalyst to most of them, Warpstone, that most dangerous of things. If it could be used to make Ogres, and more importantly the dinner table, greater, all the risks would be worth it. Tech Trees: Gut Magic (TL2), Warpstone (TL2)
