Does there happen to be an option to throttle Gendo's neck?

Just curious, I just want to have a talk with him
It's always an option. Just not a good option.

The problem with killing Gendō, always, is remaining alive and in supervision of the kids afterwards.
Step 1: ???
Step 2: Leave the country with the kids
Step 3: Do not answer any questions about why you're moving
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Make sure none of them watch the news for a few weeks. Especially not Shinji or Rei.
Step 6: Start your new life as a rural turnip farmer.

...that does make me wonder what would actually happen in-setting if they just let the Angels do their thing. It's not ADAM down there, after all, so would they just sort of mill about confused until the next one turns up, and we end up with a Terminal Dogma full of Things Man Was Not Meant To Look Upon?

I think I noticed that with Dumah breaching Terminal Dogma with the Copy EVAs. Like, Dumah through Copy Rei outright demanded to see ADAM and when Gendo made it clear that ADAM's not there, the Angel just didn't know what to do anymore besides fight Shinji and look for ADAM elsewhere.

So, maybe we should simply allow angels to go to Terminal Dogma, and wait until they bluescreen?

We could start a zoo, that'd solve our budget concerns. And, if we really want, just "accidentally" have Gendo get a bit too close to the captive Angels to solve the other problem...

The problem with the zoo option is that SEELE wants the angels dead not really to protect humanity but to rip out those sweet sweet S2 organs and fuck around with them a la the healthy relationship between the sovereign colonies and the red marker because messing with tech far beyond human understanding is a fun and good idea.

Because SEELE naturally wants to bring about Convergence Instrumentality and needs an EVA powered by an S2 Engine as a conduit for the process to begin. But really, we can really foil those plans when Tabris comes into the picture, because the Dumah fight sorta provides incontrivertible proof that Angels are able to properly communicate with us now, especially since there was a previous Angel in the quest that used Copy Humans to try and infiltrate the Geofront, meaning they're able to understand humans now.

Then we could start a farm. That's probably more profitable.

I wonder if I'll ever have time to watch Evangelion.

Do you have time to watch any shows at all? It's a single season of 26 23-minute episodes, plus one feature film that reframes the last two episodes.
And the first movie is just a recap movie with some added angel scenes so if they are really short on time they could at least watch that I would think?

Why watch evangelion at all? Just read fanfiction with zero context of anything happening, and google if your confused about anything.

It's worked for me. Not a single episode watched, and I can comprehend the lore.

I have the time. I just need to decide to watch a 28-year-old anime instead of keeping up with a more recent one, or one of the other classics I haven't tried yet, or seeing if I like the non-Phantom-Blood parts of JJBA, or catching up on Pale, reading one of the web serials I've been meaning to start, or playing video games, or scrolling Tumblr, or working on my fanfic WIPs, or working on my original fiction ideas, or working on that quest I've been preparing, or working on that TTRPG I'm planning to run IRL, or helping family members, or—

Are there eleven or twelve hours free of formal commitments? Yeah. Are there eleven or twelve hours free of anything else I want to do? Not so much.

Ha, I know this feeling. I'm having to actively stop myself from taking on new creative projects because I've ended up with three pretty sizeable ones on my plate already, in addition to Continuing Being Alive commitments...

I'd probably rather watch Utena (as I heard it, Ikuhara is on record as saying that all interpretations are correct, even those that directly contradict each other) or Evangelion (as far as I can tell the mind screw of end of evangelion is memetically overstated) than most things released since :)

But yeah, reading Eva fanfic and the evageeks wiki is pretty helpful for understanding shit.

It's entirely thematically appropriate to gain an understanding of Evangelion through second- or even third- hand sources, like some prophet of old desperately finding meaning in the visions they've been granted and piecing together an accurate cosmology from those small glimpses...

(That said, yeah, Eva isn't nearly so hard to understand as people make out; it's weird compared to a lot of contemporary media that was available in English at the time, but not so far out there compared to contemporary Japanese media and the context it existed in)

Two things!

First, I've been working on the activity history spreadsheet, changing it to a format I think both looks better and will be easier to expand in the future. Also correcting mistakes; a surprising number of weeks and Angels were in the wrong order.
I've updated it up until the start of the Dumah incident. That seems like a good place to take a break, both because it's about where the old version stopped being updated and becauseI need to decide how much to change formatting for the semi-imaginary week. You know, trying to both record what actions the players took and indicate which of them don't actually matter.

I mention this because I'd like to hear some input on the matter. Aside from that:
  • Does it look good and useful to people who aren't me, or do they find it ugly/distracting/unreadable? (And if not, what doesn't work?)
  • Should I add another column for "chapters" (a series of updates with the same name), or would that be too much?
  • I've added exactly one non-Angel event: Asuka's welcoming party in week 15. Should I keep that information, or leave it out for legibility? In the former case, what other events do you think deserve to be included in the spreadsheet?
  • (write-in)

Second, I've been working on a quest inspired partly by this one and partly by a brief conversation in this thread from a couple months ago. I have a draft for the first post that I'd like to get other eyes on, to make sure it makes sense to people who haven't been thinking about it for a couple of months.
If you're willing to beta read for a quest, here's a link to a Google Doc. It's set to allow comments, or you can PM me or something.

Sorry for sticking that in this thread. I just figure y'all would have useful input for a quest like that.

Sheet looks good, formatting is pretty decent there. Might be worth having chapters and votes therein as a sub-sheet? Otherwise, no real comments. Not much time or energy to poke at the document right now, but if I remember I'll look at it over the weekend/next week.

The Fourth Child I: Homecoming, Again
[X] Try to solve this yourself.

You have no idea what you're supposed to do in this situation. You try to remember what the nurses did at the facility you were kept in after Second Impact when you had a meltdown, but everything from that time is a hazy smear. Shit! Rei is still screaming. You aren't doing anything. Why aren't you doing anything?

You try to calm her down with a hug. Rei responds by swatting at your face. A sharp pain. She's scratched you. Rei begins frantically saying she can't breathe and grasps at her throat. You try to reassure her she's alright and tell her to calm down, but it's not working. Your mouth feels dry. What are you supposed to do?

The commotion has alerted medical staff, who come into the room and tell you to leave the room so they can handle it. One of them hands you a bandage and iodine-soaked cotton ball to put on the cut on your cheek. You reluctantly step outside and wait, your heart pounding in your chest. Did…did you just fuck up? A pit forms in your stomach as you see Ritsuko Akagi fast-walking down the hallway towards you. She glares at you with an expression that asks, "what the hell did you do?" You fold your arms and frown without saying anything to her. Since when did she give a shit about Rei's well-being, anyway?

After several minutes, you're allowed to go back in, though Ritsuko warns you not to say anything that could surprise or upset her. She's in a delicate state right now. Apart from that, there's nothing physically wrong with her. Just be careful, alright?

You reenter the room to find Rei sitting up in bed, looking down at her lap. She looks drained. Her skin is paler than usual. Hello, Major, she mumbles. Rei apologizes for that outburst earlier. She was disoriented and not thinking clearly. Her eyes widen when she notices the bandage on your face. Did she do that? You shrug and say it's fine. She didn't mean to. Rei mumbles okay. She's obviously still shaken.

There's a long pause. Rei looks miserable. You badly want to give her a hug, but you're afraid to touch her again.

Rei says quietly that she thinks she had what is called a "nightmare". She inflects the word as if she's only vaguely familiar with the concept. Must be nice.

Rei says she "dreamed" she was on a beach, but it kept becoming other beaches. Sometimes the weather was bright and calm, and sometimes it was dark and turbulent. There was a stranger there, a woman, she thinks, and they talked about many things, but she can't really remember what was talked about very well. There were other people there as well, but Rei can't remember if she spoke to them or what they looked like. Rei can still remember the sound of the waves against the shore, the cold seawater on her toes, the grinning skulls half-buried in the densely packed sand…it all felt very real at the time.

Once again, Rei apologizes for her outburst earlier. Her memories and thoughts were jumbled. She presumes that the Angel was destroyed, given that everyone is still alive. Unless of course, this isn't real. Rei stiffens after voicing that concern and begins staring at you. Is this real? You nod in the affirmative. Rei considers this and seems to relax a little, but she's still on edge.

Rei blinks, seeming to remember something, and she frowns. Are Ikari and Sohryu okay? Worry is plainly written on her face. You say Shinji's fine, if anxious about Rei's well-being. Asuka, on the other hand…you fill Rei in on what's been going on while she was indisposed. Rei furrows her eyebrows together, dismay in her voice. She sees. She is unsure that telling Sohryu about your indecent relationship with Kaji was the wisest course of action. It seems to have hurt her. It might hurt her ability to pilot. It might affect her relationship with Rei. Rei is…concerned.

You tell Rei that you understand her concerns, but you think that in the long-term, Asuka will be better off moving on from Kaji sooner rather than investing more emotional energy in pursuing him. You feel it's better she be told upfront rather than her finding out on her own. Rei gives you a confused look. It's the same information, is it not? Does it matter? You explain how hiding something like that from her could be perceived as dishonest and upset her even further. Rei seems troubled by this.

You decide to switch topics and update Rei on other developments, including the Unit-03 situation. As with the other pilots, you decide to hold off on telling Rei the most likely identity of the pilot for now. It's not like you're supposed to know right now, anyway. You understand that she tolerates Suzuhara due to Hikari's crush on him, but you haven't forgotten that she punched him shortly after you took her into your home. With your luck, she'll probably find out about him before you do. You wonder whether she's sitting on any other information that would make it easier to do your job.

While you're talking, Shinji bursts into the room, looking out of breath. His eyes are fixed on Rei's surprised expression. He gives her a relieved smile. Rei looks nervous. He says that she's awake. Rei blinks slowly and says that yes, she is aware. Shinji eagerly makes his way to Rei's bedside and asks how she's feeling. Rei shrugs. You notice Shinji reach out to hold her hand before thinking better of it and pulling his hand away.

So does Rei, because she reaches out to gently take his hand in her own. She still looks nervous, and her cheeks darken. Shinji gives you a worried expression, which you respond to with a wink. Rei lets go of his hand and asks Shinji to sit by her side for a while. You decide to give them some alone time.

After further examination and some paperwork, Rei is deemed fit for release. There's nothing physically wrong with her they could find, and her behavior has returned to baseline. No signs of mental contamination could be found. You and Shinji take her home. She doesn't talk much in the car, merely contenting herself with looking out the window pensively, as always. There's a bit of awkwardness between her and Shinji, but it doesn't seem like tension, so you decide to let it be. You'll tease Shinji about it later.

You find Asuka lying supine on the couch with a magazine draped over her stomach, staring at the ceiling. Her bad arm droops to one side. She looks bored and tired. You hadn't noticed it before, maybe because Asuka's been actively racing you to the bathroom in the morning lately, but there are dark circles under her eyes. She probably isn't getting enough sleep. Her eyes flick to you standing in the doorway, then to Rei, lingering for a moment, before she goes back to staring at the ceiling. Took you long enough, Asuka says flatly.

Rei doesn't know how to respond, and she eyes Asuka warily before saying hello and asking how she is. Shitty, says Asuka, thanks for asking. Rei says oh. She's sorry to hear that. Asuka just grunts in response and rolls over on her side. Rei gives you and Shinji a perplexed look, before balling her fists, seeming to resolve herself to do something. Rei goes over to Asuka and quietly thanks her for saving her life.

Asuka stiffens. Yeah. Sure. Whatever. They're even now. She closes her eyes. Rei looks anxious.

A surprised wark sounds from the kitchen before Pen2 barrels into the room as fast as his stubby legs can carry him and he runs into Rei's legs. Rei gives him a soft smile and pats his head. She says she's home.

Special Activity

You may do one special activity of your choosing each week. It won't raise Rei's stats, but you can use it to bond with her, affect her mood, or solve her problems. Additionally, you can also use this slot to pursue your own projects, if any. This is not controlled by majority vote. The QM will merely choose the most entertaining one. Note that this activity does not have to include the pilots.

That...could have gone better.

At least Rei is fine. Like, actually fine, not "Rei is fine" fine.

If you're asking if it's another Dumah situation, no. Probably not. I mean, for all we know the whole universe could be fake, but that's crazy talk.

Whatever our plans, I vote that we set aside one action slot for each pilot for a bit "Go out/free time" action. A nice little celebration of everyone being awake and healthy-ish...but phrased in a way that Asuka probably won't take as a veiled insult about her arm.

🥰And Rei-chan just got 100 points ahead! Time to become a responsible guardian - Shinji-kun, if you offend her, then I will destroy you and your future!
