Quest to Become a Hero

However, compare the lives lost adventuring to those lost in the war against demons every day. Lowest estimates put the average casualties of a good day of the forces positioned at Bastion at roughly two hundred, and the bad days? Worst recorded casualties of Bastion's forces, date 893 AE which is not even ten years ago, in a single day is at six hundred thousand from what they could gather.
What kind of population figures make such an attrition rate sustainable over the constant course of all of civilized history? How many countries are contributing to the frontlines of the Demon lands, and how many soldiers do they each need to train up, equip, and ship out every day like factory products?

That was the day the Demon Lord Pararia assaulted the Bastion Mountains alone. Three Venerated Heroes, Two Grand Heroes, Thirty Three Heroes, Sixty Two Lesser Heroes, and one of the front line Fortresses along with it's stationed army fell to Pararia and it simply walked away afterwards...
All of which is only good for the everyday enemy forces, because as soon as the power concentration of a Demon Lord shows up it doesn't matter how many normal warriors you have, they're all just chaff who can't even slow it down.

Remember that Venerated Heroes are the top Rank of Adventurers, there is no one stronger. The fact that that Demon Lord slaughtered them all and then just walked off seemingly out of boredom tells me that the only reason mortal civilization hasn't been insta-crushed forever ago is because either the Demon Lords are fickle and not really that dedicated to wiping out the mortal races, and/or there's some other kind of more esoteric restriction preventing them from doing so (though not preventing them from assaulting the borders?).

I was curious about the difference between the Demons' chaotic mana and the Mortal Races' orderly mana so I looked back through the threadmarks. I'm pretty sure I didn't get every mention of mana, but here are some things I found interesting.
They originate from the arrival of Demons in the world when mana was thrown into chaos, suddenly some rabbits became infected with small traces of mana leading to mutations that led them down the path of carnivores.
It seems like Demons came to this world from somewhere else? Why did they leave their home, and what do they intend for this world? They probably could have killed all of the Mortal Races off if they wanted, given that 600,000 kill count in a single day, but they haven't. Is it just because they can't get past the Great Bastions?
Word from the Great Bastions has come again, but this time it is absolutely wonderful news. During the eight years we've spent changing this wasteland into a supporting pillar of the Kingdom the God of Knowledge has succeeded in completing the work our God envisioned, with the support of thousands of mages and the last Rocksmiths of the Dwarven race. Where once the Bastions were fortresses built spread out on open plains facing the hellscape of the Demon lands there now stands a vast mountain range, the fortresses integrated into them to form an impenetrable barricade against our greatest foes.

Magic, and Divine Will perfectly combined to flow endlessly through them, causing the chaotic Mana of the Kingdom to slowly settle and reinforcing the defensive line so that even the Demon lords and our God himself cannot destroy them. With this there is yet hope for a revival of the Last Races rather than a slow, glorious death...

Giant Rats are a species classified as Monsters due to the high internal concentration of Mana.
Slimes. Slimes are without a doubt Monsters due to their nature as beings entirely held together by the mana of the core that makes up the heart of their body.
Monstrous Corn are a species classified as Monster plants and they seem to have derived from corn that had been planted long ago which underwent mutation from chaotic mana.
Green-pelt Wolves are considered Dangerous Beasts as they are only slightly mutated from the chaotic mana of the Demon Army's arrival.
Chaotic mana apparently causes mutations and the creation of brand new life forms like Slimes. How exactly do Demons fight? Can they use the same schools of magic that the Mortal Races do? That seems too orderly for chaotic mana, and there has to be something giving the Demon Lords an edge over the Venerated Heroes.

Awakening is the term used for when someone manages to gather enough Mana to shatter a barrier called the Boundary inside of them, thus enabling their body to take in and output Mana with ease. Such an act generally creates a substantial disturbance, the area nearby undergoing some minor magical effects as the latent Mana is sent out of whack by the amount pouring towards whoever Awakened.

For those unaware of what Mana is - Mana, after centuries of research, has been concluded to be the life force of the world. It is what makes up the basic laws we witness day after day. Due to the world's latent Mana, a fire will start when sparks strike dry kindling, or plants will grow in soil. Hence, the act of gathering Mana is taking in the energy that fuels these core rules and that allows the user to effect the world in various ways, assuming they have the knowledge.
If Mana is the life force of the world and the basic laws of how it works, then the chaotic mana of the Demons might have brought over from their own world. It might not be chaotic at all, just working on different basic laws and principles than the mana of the Mortal Races. Can the Demons transform this world into a copy of their own by spreading chaotic mana? Can we eventually target chaotic mana somehow to defeat the Demons?

I'm also curious about the Boundary and Awakening. Does every living thing have a Boundary, or is it only sapient beings? An Awakening sends the latent mana "out of whack", but this is not described as "chaotic". Are they two different situations, or are Demons always drawing in mana to create chaotic mana around them?

A Simple Skill Test, Intriguing Book, and the Combat Begins!
[X] Scribe Work

"Scribe work, obviously."

Your answer inspired a small burst of laughter from Liara as well as the apparent confirmation from the golem in front of you as it waves a hand in front of itself. Despite everything you've seen the Guild do so far, you are completely caught by surprise as a large book appears in the golem's hand. Its cover is made of surprisingly high quality leather without a hint of damage anywhere on the book, like it was just made.

Upon its cover is the words 'List of the Branches of Academia and their Descriptions: Made for Rank Advancement Exams.' which both quite the mouthful and genuinely interesting to you. It makes you forget about your earlier answer as your inner need comes screaming to the front of your mind in excitement. Shortly after the golem summons forth paper to write on before speaking again.

"Copy at least forty percent of the contents within an hour, accurately, to pass. Beginning in three, two, one."

By the time it's counted down you've barely found a suitable place to write along the edge of the arena. You withdraw your quill and begin to furiously copy the contents down onto the provided paper, your mind soaking in the information as best it can as you do so.so

---

The fields of Academia and Knowledge are numerous, diverse, and at times almost incomprehensible except to the most well versed of scholars, or intellectuals. We created this book both as a test prepared to test the mundane, everyday skills of some of the Guild's Adventurers as well as a sort of collection of those categories of knowledge that scholars throughout the kingdoms study. Within you will find a list of these fields along with simple descriptions, set up in a way to test one's capabilities as a scribe when copying and as an introduction for those interested.

...

Mathematics. The field of study oriented around understanding numbers and calculations that has far reaching effects in a great number of fields from economics to engineering to even smithing if applied correctly. Scholars who focus on this field of knowledge are called Mathematicians.

Administration. The field of study focused around the cohesive and competent running of a location's industries, resources, populace, and standing forces commonly learned by aides to Lords and the Lords themselves. It is focused on managing the logistical needs of a territory or group as well as establishing orderly systems with which to run them. Scholars who focus on this field of knowledge are called Stewards.

Geography. The field of study focused on researching and understanding the world's terrain, the borders and land division of kingdoms, and the importance of key features as well as the effect of people on the world around them. Scholars who focus on this field of knowledge are called Geographers.

Monster Knowledge. Also known as the Beast's Lore, is the study of the behavior, features, and anatomy of creatures classed as Dangerous Beasts, or Monsters. Their studies can reveal crucial weak points on monsters, discover unknown uses of the parts of monsters, the habits of specific species of monster, and far more. Scholars who focus on this field of knowledge are called Monster Anatomists.

Plant Knowledge. A field of study that focuses entirely on plants. Their effects, their growth patterns, their climate conditions, rarity, etc. Scholars who focus on this field of knowledge are called Botanists.

...

The book carries on to list of a myriad more fields: Architecture, Economics, Psychology, Anatomy, Literature, Linguistics, Engineering, Meteorology, Astrology, Geology, etc. Even with your time spent in the Academy you never knew there were so many fields of study one could explore, and all of them seemed so intriguing as you began to be filled with thoughts of what they would reveal, or how they might cooperate to make each other stronger...

Before you knew it you hand was stopped in mid air by an wooden arm that felt more like stone, the golem's emotionless voice carrying over.

"Time is up. Beginning evaluation."

After saying that the golem picks up the stack of papers and begins to scan through them one by one, a long pause following after it's scanned across the last page of the growing stack you had formed. It doesn't take long for an answer to come forth.

"Mr. Stitch is considered to have passed. A total of fourty-seven percent of the book was copied with only minimal errors in the copied contents. You may keep the copied pages, the book is Guild Property."

With that it returns the stack to you, almost twenty sheets of paper densely packed with words. It is now that you realize that Liara has vacated the area, Velvet coming over to crouch next to your foot and appearing far healthier than before at that. Your eyebrow raises, uncertainty welling up until the voice continues again.

"No break to be issued, Combat Exam to begin after a ten second countdown. Beginning. Ten. Nine.-"

What do you do?
[] The moment the countdown ends launch yourself at the golem full force, Velvet can launch attacks from the sidelines. Go full force at with dagger in hand!
[] Begin kiting, try and get Velvet to draw it's attention so you can get an opening to Backstab it!
[] Write-in.

Perhaps with enough work you may achieve acknowledgement as a Sage, a master of countless fields of knowledge. Increased skill gains for scholar related skills.
Forbidden Scholar - You are more likely to notice lore and knowledge regarding those topics considered forbidden to the general populace. Of course, your affinity for these subjects does not create that knowledge where none exists.
Studious - You've become well acquainted with book learning and, while it will never be a good replacement for a teacher, have learned how to make the most of it. Increased skill gains when learning a skill from a book.

Questions:

1. How fast is Dominate Writing?
2. Did the text we copied include any information about golems or combat?
3. Do we still have our full inventory (including the 2nd dagger page) on us?
4. Would they be upset at us if we set the golem on fire with our oil flask and flint?

1.) Nearly Instant on the pages you've Dominated before.
2.) Nope, it was just general descriptions of scholarly fields of study, their names, and the titles for them.
3.) Yes.
4.) You would need to try to find out.

I wonder if John would have been able to pass this skill test without his library voting dream. Perhaps a sign the test really is designed for the examinee.

Also, I suspect we will want to memorize and dominate our new pages, mostly because we need the blank paper.

I'm still worried about being accused of cheating if we use Dominate Writing right before the exam.

I'm not sure why? Buffs are a normal part of life here, just look at the advice to get priest buffs before going out fighting.
It just makes me uneasy because I'm not sure what exactly they're looking to test. Do they want to test the combatant's base combat abilities? Would they be perfectly fine with a test-taker getting a priest's blessing before taking the Advancement Exam?

I guess this is the best chance we're going to get to find that out, given how we seem to have passed the first 2 sections and how failing the combat exam doesn't guarantee failing the Advancement Exam. I just like playing things safe.

Power is power no matter the scource, I think?
I've never seen any place where the guild explicitly forbids the use of an ability when it wouldn't be destructive in some way- if you can do it, it's fair game, just don't break something useful okay?
It's why we have to copy what we read before Dominating it, as we'd wipe the Guild libraries clean otherwise.
Similar reasoning is likely behind the need for licenses for Monster-taming: it's to ensure someone doesn't bring some powerful and barely-trained monster into town, claim it to be 'safe' and then some child gets too close and gets eaten.

I'm still worried about being accused of cheating if we use Dominate Writing right before the exam.
Most of the people saying set up to backstab it immediately are setting up for a different kind of "cheating". Also the first rule of combat is there is no cheating, only alive or not alive.
