Quest to Become a Hero

[X] Aspire to Sagehood

[X] Studious

Aspire to Sagehood improves all scholarly learning, which then influences Studious which increases our ability to learn from books. Combine that with the ability to learn from books, copy down their information, and then absorb it with Dominate Writing, then solidify that training with real-world use? We'll be able to train in various skills very quickly.

Level Up
[X] Aspire to Sagehood
[X] Studious

You leave the Guild Hall, slowly stretching out as you walk to try and ease the soreness in your body, and head for a nearby street vendor to get some food. Your attempts to haggle with the owner end in horrible failure, the old lady running it more akin to a brick wall than a person. She grins as you hand over five coppers before giving you a stack of fried fruit flat-breads.

You throw one down to Velvet as you walk off to the side before cramming the rest into your own stomach, the sweetness of the fruit a good contrast to the savory taste of the bread. Looking up as you enjoy your food you find the sun well at it's peak signalling the arrival of noon in the time you spent inside the guild.

---

After your quick lunch you return to the Guild still somewhat exhausted, so you decide to head to the Library in search of a book that goes into detail on stealth. However, a thorough search of the shelves available to you turn up nothing that appears even remotely useful for researching stealth.

Stepping back from the shelf you mutter to yourself,

"Well, seems like the Library really doesn't have everything, or at the least this area of it does not. Curious, but at least that means the Points I spent on the stealth class aren't entirely worthless...

What now though? Maybe it would be best to look for something else to research until I've recovered, might be best to take the Exam at peak condition."

Local Administration (Beginner, 10%) - +4 to rolls involving administration of businesses and small land holdings.
Geography of Relgar Township Region (Beginner) - Capable of recalling information related to areas in the Relgar area that could be of use. Such as the size of a specific forest, important landmarks, etc.
Monster Knowledge (Relgar Township, Beginner, 45%) - You've memorized basic information provided on Vicious Rabbits, Giant Rats, Slimes, Monstrous Corn, Green-pelt Wolves, and Forest Bears.
Copying Writing (Adept, 1%) - You've experienced copying countless documents, books, and records to such an extent that it's almost an ingrained instinct in you. Time required to copy any form of writing is reduced and chance of wrongly copying something is greatly decreased.
Evasion (Beginner, 15%) - You've learned the basics of positioning, and movement enabling you to react well to attacks sent you way. It's rather simple now, but even a slight advantage could save your life. Increases your Difficulty to Hit by 4.
Dagger Mastery (Beginner, 2%) - Through sparring and practice you have grasped the basics of fighting with a dagger. How to grip it so as not to lose the weapon in combat, basic and effective methods of attack from stabbing to slicing, etc. +4 to attack rolls when wielding a dagger.

Harvesting (Learning Beginner, 45%) - You are slowly obtaining experience in the act of harvesting plants and herbs. With some more work experience you are certain you'd be at least somewhat skilled in the act.
Skinning (Learning Beginner, 40%) - You have learned the basic knowledge one should know to begin skinning and harvesting the corpses of monsters, but to really come to understand it and it's uses you will need actual experience.
Haggling (Learning Beginner, 89%) - You have obtained a lot of insight into the act of haggling varying from the dos to the don'ts and you are certain with a bit more knowledge and actual practice you can put it to work helping you.
Identification (Learning Beginner, 10%) - After reading the book on Identification you have a vague idea of how the power works, but without a teacher to guide you in the absolute specifics you are unsure if you can learn to utilize this power.
Survival (Learning Beginner, 40%) - You are quickly becoming used to most basic of the basics when it comes to surviving outdoors, and with the help of some of your research materials you believe you have a decent grasp of it all. Only actively performing the actions and experience will tell.
Trapping (Learning Beginner, 20%) - Trapping is a rather simple subject, but the specifics are somewhat confusing to you with your rather limited life experiences. You have a decent grasp of theoretical knowledge, but will need to use it in the field to confirm.

Abilities:
Domination (Level One, 5/25) - Allows you to bind creatures/monsters that are one level below you (to a minimum of level 1) to your will permanently. Unless the creature in question has a particularly strong will then the power is bound to succeed. Does not work on humans. [Dominated Beings: 1/2]
+ Dominate Writing (Level One, 7/25) - You've obtained a new power derived from your blessing from the God of War. It grants you the ability to draw strength from the written word though... You are utterly uncertain what that actually means. [Dominated Writings: 0/1]

Backstab - You force an opening in your opponent's guard and shift yourself into place to deliver a well timed, well placed reverse grip stab to the foe's back with great force. Such a move is straining on you, but has incredible effects when successfully performed. Make a single attack that deals four times damage to the enemy if it lands, uses a moderate amount of Stamina.

Traits:
Sturdy Physique -
You come to possess a body that is much more resilient than your original form allowing you to withstand roughly twice as much damage before your body gives out resulting in death.
Quick to Act - You are fast to respond in dangerous situations, where others are still confused about changing events you have already begun to move in response to them.
Iron Clad Mind - Your will is strengthened considerably under the guidance of the Spirit as if your mind has created the foundations of a fortress around it. With it's backing you are capable of putting up greater resistance against mental influences.

Aspire to Sagehood - You've come to find yourself a seeker of all forms of knowledge and find it easy to learn those skills a scholar finds most useful. Perhaps with enough work you may achieve acknowledgement as a Sage, a master of countless fields of knowledge. Increased skill gains for scholar related skills.
Forbidden Scholar - You are more likely to notice lore and knowledge regarding those topics considered forbidden to the general populace. Of course, your affinity for these subjects does not create that knowledge where none exists.
Studious - You've become well acquainted with book learning and, while it will never be a good replacement for a teacher, have learned how to make the most of it. Increased skill gains when learning a skill from a book.

Swift Growth I - With enough power the Heroic Spirit can even help you grow, increasing the rate at which you earn experience by twenty-five percent permanently.

That sounds reasonable to me.

I'm thinking we look for a meditation book next?

I'm looking forward to the Porcelain library and store unlocks! And some higher level quests, hopefully, we seem to have done all the lingering scribe quests at Wood rank.

I'm torn between putting the study list together ahead of time and keeping it democratic. Hm.

I want to make sure that Velvet is as healed as we can get her before the Advancement Exam. It'll probably cost us 6 Coppers per pound for up to 18 Coppers (based on the price last time), but I'm not sure she can eat 3 pounds of meat at once anyway.

Considering that Stealth isn't an available topic even though we can take a class on it, I'm adding two additional research topics in case the magic-oriented ones don't pan out.

Well we kind of were already shown this by the lack of Monster Taming books, I'm just surprised that Stealth also falls under this lack.

We just fed Velvet, so I'm not sure how much Rabbit meat she can actually eat right now. If we wanted to heal her with Cannibalize then we should've voted so previously instead of buying her regular food. She can still take a few hits, and we're not going to push her until she risks dying in this test, so I'm fine with waiting until she's hungry again or heals naturally over time, whichever comes first.

After ranking up we should do some alchemy tasks/research. Seems to fit us well and could provide interesting support abilities down the road.

I love the idea of being able to get healing items without having to pay a premium for them. We should see if the alchemist shopkeeper teaches any basic lessons for a fee. Additionally, we should look for bookshops in town. I'd like to try testing dominate writing on an actual complete book or scroll, and that means buying one we don't mind destroying.

While I'm thinking about shopping trip stuff, I think the general store is our best bet for some wire or cord for trap-making.

Turning your sights to other shelves, you begin searching through them for a book related to meditation, magic, or runes as your next topic of research. It takes a surprisingly short time to find a book titled "The Difference between a Magic User and Everyone Else" which immediately grabs your attention. You snatch it off the shelf and walk over to a table to begin reading.

---

Magic, a rare and elusive art form steeped in mystery, hidden behind some impenetrable veil that only raises itself for those truly lucky. Or at least, that's what those of us in rural areas have come to believe as the truth, but the fact is there is no special talent or spark required to become a magic user.

Anyone can complete their Awakening and become able to wield magic, but few have such opportunities available to them. Even if they do, more often than not it is quite an expensive process to undergo in order to achieve an Awakening, or expensive AND time consuming depending on the method used.

Awakening is the term used for when someone manages to gather enough Mana to shatter a barrier called the Boundary inside of them, thus enabling their body to take in and output Mana with ease. Such an act generally creates a substantial disturbance, the area nearby undergoing some minor magical effects as the latent Mana is sent out of whack by the amount pouring towards whoever Awakened.

For those unaware of what Mana is - Mana, after centuries of research, has been concluded to be the life force of the world. It is what makes up the basic laws we witness day after day. Due to the world's latent Mana, a fire will start when sparks strike dry kindling, or plants will grow in soil. Hence, the act of gathering Mana is taking in the energy that fuels these core rules and that allows the user to effect the world in various ways, assuming they have the knowledge.

...

Mana in it's basic form has essentially no use, it is only after a magic user has processed it into a spell through use of a chant, hand signs, charms, rituals, or what have you that it can actually do something. Simply Awakening is not enough to become a renowned magic user, you actually need access to some form of manipulation that magic users term as "Schools".

Each "School" has a different method of activation, or a different focus from the rest. A Magic User who practices the "School of Elements" might be able to summon a fireball or call down lightning while one who studies the "School of Runic Magic" would perform their art through engraved runes.

...

In order to achieve Awakening and become a magic user one must break the Boundary, as mentioned earlier, but here I shall go into a bit more detail. There are a number of ways to Awaken from Meditation to consuming certain plants to even being born already Awakened (an incredibly rare feat). However, among them Meditation is the easiest and cheapest, if the one that requires the most time investment. It is also a needed skill for every magic user.

Through Meditation one learns to feel the latent Mana in the air around them, draw it in, and then use it to batter against the Boundary. As one gather's more Mana they deal more and more damage to the Boundary until finally it cracks, shatters, and opens the world of magic to the user. It is of course a slow, time consuming process as time needs to be spent daily accumulating Mana and using it to weaken the Boundary.

---

The book continues to speak on the rarity of Magic Users in the countryside, of the existence of Magical Colleges in the cities, and how Magic isn't necessarily stronger than a well wielded sword. All in all, it was quite the insightful read even if it didn't exactly give you anything concrete to learn actual skills from, but knowledge is it's own reward after all.

By the time you put the book away you are already feeling far less tired than before, not as good as after a good night's sleep, but the best you can likely expect given the circumstances. You take a moment to scratch your chin as you look around the Library at a slow pace, taking your time to enjoy a break before hunting down the next bit of study material.

It's quite easy to find a book that interests you, after all you copied a section from it a while ago, 'A Simple Guide to Relgar's Plants'.

---

Red-shelled Warmth. An odd name for a type of nut that grows within the forests around Relgar, it's shell has a slightly red tint to it and can be found growing in clusters among the branches of Warmwood Trees. These clusters commonly have between five and fifteen nuts growing together and thus can be gathered in great abundance making them a cheap item to purchase, but a decent source of income for one dedicated to harvesting them.

Commonly used as an ingredient in health poultices, medicines to fight infections, and some specialty potions that enhance the drinker's body. Infrequently used as an ingredient in Heat Tinctures, made to combat severe cold, as the nuts themselves warm the body.

Little care is needed in their harvest, one simply needs to cut down the clusters from up in the trees before storing in any form of container. So long as the shell remains unbroken they tend to keep for months.

...

Blue Bells. A flower that grows in plains, or upon low hills known for both it's pale blue bell shaped flower and the charming, tinkling sound it makes when being moved by the wind. Comes in many size, but the largest reported Blue Bell found had a bell in excess of a half foot diameter. A key ingredient in the creation of low-end magical potions due to their high Mana concentration and neutral aspects.

In order for one to properly harvest a Blue Bell a few items are required: One's hands, wooden storage box, and something small yet sharp.

...

Golden Leaf....

---

Everything after that is largely an explanation of the more common herbs used as spices, or simpler medicines from thyme to poppies. Oddly enough, as you read everything seems to be much clearer to you. All of the words just seem to make sense as you process them, the justifications and reasoning in the written paragraphs easily organized and understood.

Not just that, but the act of reading itself has just been more enjoyable today...
