The longer we take to kill the Mother Corn, the more minions we'll have to fight. Maybe we should try to kill it right away and then get a better weapon if our first attempt fails. That way we can also put off the debate on what weapon John should use for his long-term combat strategy.
It depends on what we find out about the Mother Corn in our research. If the Library says that it's basically inanimate and the only threat is from all the Monstrous Corn it produces, and it hasn't made an overwhelming amount overnight (since we cleared out almost all of its defenders today), then I'm fine with killing the remaining Monstrous Corn normally to finish off our Blunt Mastery before the Rabbit Quest, and chopping down the Mother with our hand axe.
However, if it says that it will fight back to defend itself, then no way should we let John get into melee with a Copper Ranked Monster, no matter what weapon he has. I'd rather take my chances with the fire bomb and just try to keep the fire contained. Although...an idea! Since we're going to have to go to the Apothecary tomorrow morning anyway to turn in our Golden Leaf (and possibly buy healing if we need it), do you think we can ask Gerald if he can brew up an herbicide/poison flask for us? It's a niche concoction that he probably doesn't keep supplied on the front shelves, but shouldn't be too complicated to make on request, and it'd serve the same purpose as the fire bomb without risking starting an out of control wild fire.
[X] A dark blue set of robes made from some form of cloth. Wave patterns adorn it's surface and appear incredibly comforting to the eye, almost soothing.
I'm concerned that no one is voting to feed Velvet. I worry that without explicit vote to do so, that we will wait until after our dinner to feed her, and I think that is too long.
I'm concerned that no one is voting to feed Velvet. I worry that without explicit vote to do so, that we will wait until after our dinner to feed her, and I think that is too long.
The receptionist fed Velvet during the Advancement Exam and gave us the potion for her for free, I think because she considered Velvet to be cute. I'd be very surprised if Liara didn't order Velvet a meal at the restaurant.
[X] Yeah, I'll accept the request.
[X] A dark blue set of robes made from some form of cloth. Wave patterns adorn it's surface and appear incredibly comforting to the eye, almost soothing.
It is a bit of struggle to make a choice, each of them quite intriguing to you if almost purely due to the fact that clothes of this value and quality are something you've never had a chance to choose let alone wear. However, you find yourself drawn back to the robes with the ocean patterns after a mental struggle and finally make your decision based on the comfort it seems to cause.
"I'll uh... take the dark blue ones, the ocean pattern is calming and it might help me with interacting with people since it's not exactly something I do well."
Liara's smile turns into a grin as she half tackles you, one hand grabbing the set of robes that likely cost more than anything you've ever owned, and takes you towards a changing room at the back. After being shoved inside, Liara hanging the robes on a hook set into the door before shutting it, you find a rather nicely carved wash basin with rose patterns carved into. Behind it a mirror is mounted on the wall that makes you feel quite uneasy, finally seeing just how horrid you currently looked with your robes stained by a mixture of blood and plant monster giblets.
You let out a protracted sigh before setting about get washed up and changed.
---
When you leave the changing room you find Liara talking to Rose, the other robes long since put away while the receptionist is busy setting five gold coins onto the counter.
"As usual your work is impressive, glad to see that old age hasn't dulled your hands old bat."
Glancing towards you Rose gives half nod before turning back to Liara and snorting.
"Ha, now how is that a good way to talk to your aunt you ungrateful arsonist. Go on now, I don't need you disturbing my other customers and driving away business by making my store feel like some merchant lord's sauna."
Liara laughs in response before dragging you out of the store, your companion humming joyfully as you awkwardly walk down the street with the receptionist wrapped around your arm. She outright ignores the stares of those still shopping in the middle of the night, a mixture of recognition and confusion clear on quite a few of them that makes you want to crawl under a rock.
'I am beginning to regret my decision. Gods, why can't people be like books?'
You are drug from any attempt to lament at your current situation by Liara chiming in next to you.
"Pretty good choice, you know John, you have a rather unique tendency to choose the best option given the circumstances. An earnest endeavor to learn that you don't see in most Adventurers before Copper Rank, a questioning attitude towards the Guild's behavior, and even somehow managing to come out of a direct interaction with that old hunk of driftwood of Valencia's.
And now you've picked the set of robes I chose specifically to help with whatever it is that caused that pain of yours, it must of been quite bad to leave such a deep mark. Did you even know you were frowning from the moment you got back to the Guild until you put those robes on?"
Her words make you stop for a moment, the strange and whimsical receptionist stopping to stare at you for a moment with a halfhearted smile before starting to drag you down the road. In truth you have no idea how to respond, you hadn't noticed it before.
'Maybe I would never have noticed by myself.'
---
A short while later you find yourself standing outside a three story building made from marble, the building looks like it was carved out of one massive piece rather than being put together bit by bit. Above a gold trimmed door is a large copper plaque with 'Kalia's Plate' worked into it with a plate on either side holding gold coins and meat on top of it. You stand there for a rather long moment, your eyes locked upon the ornately carved windows with colored glass mosaics set inside and the groups of those far wealthier entering.
"Kalia's got a thing for being dramatic, it's a bit overkill if you ask me. Looks like it should be in a city, but she said something about good food bringing people to it rather than being brought to them. Either way it's quite good, lets go eat already before Velvet starts trying to eat people passing by, the poor thing."
Liara says from beside you, her arms coming free of your's as she bends down and picks up your companion who struggles in complaint for a few seconds before going still when Liara pats her head. Holding your furball subject, Liara strolls towards the door of the restaurant and you make to follow only to stop dead in your tracks as your head throbs slightly.
For an instant you see the area around the receptionist warp, a nearly blinding red light pouring forth as you barely manage to discern what looks like a bow upon her back. Seemingly made from fire and light, heat pouring from it in such great quantities that you feel sweat beginning to form upon your brow in an instant. A sliver of an instant it's there and you almost swear it looks at you before everything twists again, distorted air and heat withdrawing to reveal the same odd receptionist you have become used to.
Standing there, staring at you with an eyebrow raised, she calls.
"What's the matter, see something John?"
How do you reply?
[] Try to wave it off as last minute jitters.
[] Be honest and ask her what the bow on her back is.

They Who Seek the Crown (Level One, 16/25) - A title earned by gaining the blessing of the God of War in a chance encounter with his will. It is a boon granted to those who seek to become like Lords, towering above the world with every action and word capable of bringing great waves of change. Currently it is weak and only grants you the power of Domination, but if you grow stronger and perform in a way that meshes with this Boon then perhaps its strength can grow.
Heroes can be Thieves Right? - In the name of Heroism you stole classified information from the Church of War without being caught. Now no innocent souls shall be ended with this dangerous knife, but ... yours might be if you mess up? Slightly increased chance of learning stealth and thievery related skills until discovered, lost if the Sealed Scroll is destroyed.
Ethical Scribe, Pragmatic Scholar - A scribe's duty is that of facts, numbers, honesty, and boundaries. You have a devotion to the work of the written word that few would follow in the face of potential benefits. A scholar's duty is to learn. Obtain knowledge, study books, and understand the world around them so that they may use it to help themselves or the world at large. You seek simply to perform your work to the best of your ability, further your grasp of knowledge and stand within the morals of your scholar code, even find yourself compelled to do so. Established personal Scholarly Code, sticking to it makes your work easier and better while going against it more difficult and with worse results.
Scribe Code I - No work is better than hasty work. {Provides +2 to scholarly rolls when you take your time, take -2 to scholarly rolls when you attempt to work with haste.}
Scribe Code II - Provide the facts to those that hire you, nothing more and nothing less. {Provides 2 bonus experience when followed, lose 2 experience when ignored.}
Scribe Code III - Judgement is the employer's job. {Provides 2 bonus experience when followed, lose 2 experience when ignored.}
Scholar Code I - There is satisfaction in learning that which is known and that which is not. {Provides 2 bonus experience when learning new knowledge skills and advancing skill ranks in them.}
Scholar Code II - Sometimes a price is required to learn, that price must be weighed against the knowledge to be earned carefully for while some may be worth the cost, not everything is. {Gain 4 bonus experience when learning knowledge of acceptable price, lose all experience when learning knowledge whose price is too high. May be entirely unwilling to learn something if it comes at a great cost. Only applicable to certain information/skills/traits/abilities, will be noted when it is.}
Traits
Sturdy Physique - You come to possess a body that is much more resilient than your original form allowing you to withstand roughly twice as much damage before your body gives out resulting in death. Quick to Act - You are fast to respond in dangerous situations, where others are still confused about changing events you have already begun to move in response to them. Iron Clad Mind - Your will is strengthened considerably under the guidance of the Spirit as if your mind has created the foundations of a fortress around it. With it's backing you are capable of putting up greater resistance against mental influences.
Aspire to Sagehood - You've come to find yourself a seeker of all forms of knowledge and find it easy to learn those skills a scholar finds most useful. Perhaps with enough work you may achieve acknowledgement as a Sage, a master of countless fields of knowledge. Increased skill gains for scholar related skills. Forbidden Scholar - You are more likely to notice lore and knowledge regarding those topics considered forbidden to the general populace. Of course, your affinity for these subjects does not create that knowledge where none exists. Studious - You've become well acquainted with book learning and, while it will never be a good replacement for a teacher, have learned how to make the most of it. Increased skill gains when learning a skill from a book.
Swift Growth I - With enough power the Heroic Spirit can even help you grow, increasing the rate at which you earn experience by twenty-five percent permanently.
Sorrowful I - In your quest for knowledge you chose to use your power on a creature near death and in doing so formed a mental bond much as you did with Velvet, and for the first time you now understand death. The pain and the fear, you felt every moment of your subject's death and knew you could do nothing. To make it worse, when you gave it mercy you could sense the betrayal literally assaulting you through your connection and now you understand fully the power you've been given. Such a thing, you know it will haunt you for even now it tears at you and weakens your will, your certainty in your goals... Pragmatic I -As your travel down the path of both Adventurer and Scholar you have come to understand more about the world. Of the kindness it contains, of the cruelty that lays hidden in it, and the things you may come to be asked in pursuit of your dream. A step towards pragmatism has been taken, a small one but still a step. Such pragmatism may assist you greatly, or it could drag you to an early grave. Only time and actions will tell.

You have a decent grasp of theoretical knowledge, but will need to use it in the field to confirm. Shield Mastery (Learning Beginner, 44%) - Utilizing a shield in battle is an incredibly useful tool that may well prevent incredibly lethal blows, but as it stands most of the concept has flown over your head. Monster Taming (Learning Beginner, 3%) - Needless to say that taming slimes by feeding them mana and utilizing mana to communicate with them was pretty distant from what most of monster taming was (with what little you know). Still, the book did give you some small grasp of what the trade's core needs might be. Stealth (Learning Beginner, 95%) - You have begun to grasp the simplest aspects of being stealthy, mainly softening your footsteps and avoiding a target's sight. You're quite close to putting this to effective use in the field, but need a bit more training or practical experience. Blunt Weapon Mastery (Learning Beginner, 68%) - Wielding a blunt weapon in a fight is a comparatively simple action, a combat style that is easy to learn the basics of from what you've experienced in combat and what you gained from the page you dominated.
Abilities
Domination (Level One, 8/25) - Allows you to bind creatures/monsters that are one level below you (to a minimum of level 1) to your will permanently. Unless the creature in question has a particularly strong will then the power is bound to succeed. Does not work on humans. [Dominated Beings: 1/2] + Dominate Writing (Level One, 7/25) - You've obtained a new power derived from your blessing from the God of War. It grants you the ability to draw strength from the written word though... You are utterly uncertain what that actually means. [Dominated Writings: 1/1]
Backstab -You force an opening in your opponent's guard and shift yourself into place to deliver a well timed, well placed reverse grip stab to the foe's back with great force. Such a move is straining on you, but has incredible effects when successfully performed. Make a single attack that deals four times damage to the enemy if it lands, uses a moderate amount of Stamina.

A fine mixture of sweet and salty that can survive months in the open air before rotting. If you could hunt down some for us it would be much appreciated, the more you get the better! We've left instructions to a good spot with the receptionist.

Payment: 50 Silver, 2,500 GP, 5 Rank Advancement Points, and 100 Experience Description: You've been hired to take care of a Mother Corn you've discovered, a Monstrous Corn that had mutated into a cradle for the creation of more Monstrous Corn. Such a quest is typically reserved for Copper Ranks purely due to the sheer number of Monstrous Corn such things can create in a short time, a number that can get noticeably out of hand. Request granted to you by Liara, rewards adjusted.
[X] Be honest and ask her what the bow on her back is.
I'm not sure if she'll give us an answer, but we might as well ask.
I feel like we should be able to figure out some stuff about the receptionist by now, but I really don't know. One thing that did stand out to me was how satisfied she was when John told her about the Mother Corn. The two possibilities that occurred to me were (1) she was pleased that John wasn't simply rushing in to attack an unknown monster and that he was intelligent enough to gather more information first and/or (2) she was pleased that John doesn't just attack everything that he doesn't understand, including possibly friendly(?) or useful monsters. Could she be some type of monster and not just a high-level adventurer? I've been worried about how John can defend against chaotic mana once he fights demons. That's why I've been hesitant about breaking the Boundary to learn Meditation in case the Boundary keeps chaotic mana out.
I wonder whether the deep pain Liara is referring to is the death of John's mother.
The payment for the Mother Corn quest is impressive, but I think it'll be adjusted downwards for John since the monster is so new? Even if it's only half of the original amount, that should be enough for John to get some hide/leather armor and new scholarly robes, as well as a bigger pack to carry everything.
Okay a few things that we didn't consider:
One, Sorrowful shows up on John's face, which...I forget the state of secrecy surrounding Dominion, but I think we can at least say that we're mourning a death of someone close to us, if anyone asks. Cue Liara wondering why we didn't take the happy rabbits robe, since I bet that'd have been better for John's mental health, because rabbits playing and carefree, yanno? Like wearing a smiley shirt. It does put our choice of robes in a new light though...
Secondly, FREAKING FORBIDDEN SCHOLAR! Again with that crazy proc! As for what that is...My guess is it was Liara's soul. And it puts those last few clashes with the Dawn Elf in a new light.
Okay, we need to do divine studies ASAP, because Liara should not be proccing...Unless she herself isn't mortal but ah, angelic, perhaps? Given the Bow I'd think she'd be connected to the God of War, the guy behind OUR Blessing. Given that we also kind of lit-up in an obvious manner with Valencia...I'd say that I'm thinking Liara might have spotted/noticed our blessing due to us carrying a smaller echo of the power she uses.
Alternatively, she's a demon, but for now I'm going to say friendly because Demon would likely have eaten us given due reason to...
So having re-read the bit where we find out WHY she's a big deal, I think I have a better idea.
[X]Apologize, your curiosity got the best of you and you saw something that suggest there's more to the Bow of the Red Star then just impressive archery.
Cue Liara wondering why we didn't take the happy rabbits robe, since I bet that'd have been better for John's mental health, because rabbits playing and carefree, yanno? Like wearing a smiley shirt. It does put our choice of robes in a new light though...
After being shoved inside, Liara hanging the robes on a hook set into the door before shutting it, you find a rather nicely carved wash basin with rose patterns carved into it.
So the ocean robes are supposed to help with the Sorrowful Trait, since that's the mental effect we got since she last saw us. Makes me wonder what the other robes did. Between this and Liara's Forbidden Scholar proccing bow, I'm starting to think that getting Identification sooner is more of a priority than Meditation. I mean, we still have that task from her to retrieve the Necromancer's staff during the expedition, and it'd probably be good to be able to tell if it's cursed and we need to douse it in holy water before we can safely touch it or something.
Speaking of Liara's favor, she just dropped 5 Gold on a new enchanted(?) outfit for us, on top of treating us and Velvet at this restaurant, yet she's not using it to make us owe her even more than what she did with the Health Potion. I guess she thinks that one favor is all she really needs from us at the moment, and she otherwise wants to keep things amicable with a guy who may end up being someone someday. More of a soft, unspoken obligation rather than a hard list of debts. Not to mention that her position as a Receptionist means that one "friendly" favor can be overlooked, but taking advantage of low Ranked Adventurers by piling debts onto them is probably considered corruption by the Guild and would get her in trouble.
Ok so the Mother Corn can't actually fight back, and we didn't even have to research to find that out, thanks Liara! Looks like we won't have to start a fire after all. Although, if it produces as many Monstrous Corn overnight as it sounds like here, we may have to forgo leveling up our Blunt and Shield Masteries in favor of whittling down the horde one by one with Dagger Stealth (no Backstabbing though, since they're fragile enough not to need it, and we'll need to conserve our Stamina). I mean, their Perception is apparently crap because some of the last group didn't even notice John when he was trying to get their attention.
Before I would've considered that reward as the perfect means for us to finally get the Greenpelt Leather Armor, but now I'm not so sure due to our new Robes having an Armor value. How does it compare now? I guess that the Leather Armor has a higher Armor value, but unless we can use Identification on it ahead of time, the only way to find out is to cross our fingers and buy it.
With this Quest operating a little more under "realism" than other games, could it be that we're actually supposed to own and switch between different outfits for different situations, rather than be a typical murder hobo and just constantly wear one set of armor that we never wash, and only replace with a better set of armor when we find one? That'd actually be rather novel. Our Scholar Robes still have the ??? stat, so maybe Identify would reveal that it gives a small bonus to our Scholar actions, so we'd want to wash and patch it so we can keep it for that. Meanwhile we'd have the actual armor for combat questing, while our new robes are meant for relaxing and going out on the town, but can protect us a little bit in an emergency.
The only other thing on my mind is the Sorrowful Trait. It sounds like the kind of thing that we actually have to actively attempt to resolve over time with John's actions. The robe will help, but what else can we do to help John come to terms with what happened? My first idea is that we probably want to take the Beginner's Guidebook advice and visit a temple to get a boon tomorrow morning before going after the Mother Corn. And if we're going to do that anyway, we can choose the Temple of Death and John can pray for and contemplate the Death of his First Subject while he's there. You know, wish it a peaceful rest since we skinned it instead of giving it a burial. My second idea is to use some of our remaining leather piece that's still taking up space in our Pack to fashion a memento necklace with the Dominated Wolf Fangs as a reminder about the lesson we learned and a promise not to let it happen again. I'd consider that more meaningful than turning them in for 15 Coppers, 7 GP, and 2 EXP, especially since we probably aren't going to take the Wolf Quest before going on the expedition anyway.
[X] Be honest and ask her what the bow on her back is.
I'm much happier with the idea of the wolf fang necklace with the corn quest having come along to mean we're not scraping for every silver. That'll help a lot.
[] A light green set of robes made from some form of cloth with patterns of grass and gold-leaves embroidered around the hem of it in a rather perfect manner.
The "perfect" mention here makes me think that these robes would slightly awe people, just like how the ocean robes put people slightly at ease. I'm not sure what the bonus would be though. Ocean = mind protection and relief. Maybe Forest = body so that the wearer is in better health and is slightly more dexterious?
[] A light blue set of robes made from animal hides with pure white fur around the hem and a peaceful scene of rabbits playing upon the back.
My first reaction is that the robes are Mind, Body, and Soul, but this set of robes was made from animal hides instead of cloth like the others. I'd guess that the robes don't have any special effect on humans and instead make it easier to tame animals. They might also boost the bond between animal and tamer, perhaps making it easier for a mental link to develop.
*frowns*...As far as CC goes?
I'm thinking you guys are going to be better suited to that. I will say that I like plan net capture on the corn. [X] Try to wave it off as last minute jitters.
-[X]If she doesn't buy that ask her what the Bow of the Red Star is, you didn't expect something that reminded you of a Dawn Priestess.
