Putting the Craft in Warcraft

So, an idea for a project-whenever we get free time. The Sword of Fire and Ice: A blade that burns then freezes your enemies.

The basic idea would be to take a blade and enchant it with both Fire and Ice. When someone gets stabbed with it, they first get burned by the Fire, then the wound is covered with Ice. That way, the ice pack would contain the heat and spread it through the flesh, cooking the person. It would also have the benefit of slowing of even completely immobilizing whatever part it hit-though the downside would be the Ice effect not really lasting all that long and the flame not spreading in exchange for more damage.

@Lost Star Would this be possible?

You would have to experiment some.

Actually, as a smith, we should be aware of thermal shock- although we may know it by another name. A weapon that is designed to induce thermal shock would have a habit of breaking weapons and armor. It could make a war-hammer or war-picks even more effective at breaking armor or allow a sword to be much more effective against armored opponents than it normally would.

I think the experiment would be whether or not it would be possible to combine two conflicting enchantments, not so much what they might do to what ever it is the hypothetical weapon would hit.

Thermal shock on a combat scale would however, involve enough extremes of energy to just kill the person inside the armor unless you're bashing golems.

Though it may be possible to hit something with supercooled acid, and then crystallize the acid a second later to shatter weakened bits

If you need to make a enchanted weapon with multiple elements, just use fire and lightning.
Lightning isn't really stopped by armour and fire is awful unpleasant to the people inside the armour. Add in some light and you have a sword of divine wrath.

Low temperatures reduce the reactivity of chemicals. If you freeze the acid right after it's introduced to the metal, it won't have had time to react and won't be doing any reacting after. It'd be a surface freeze anyway.

Or maybe it would turn it into a plasma cutter/torch/ "lightsaber." IIRC Fire and Lightning are both two naturally occurring forms of that state of matter...

been thinking about this for a while, been debating about A Mithril sword with Truesilver and (insert fire aligned metal here) inlay vs a Truesilver sword with Mithril and (insert fire aligned metal here) inlay.

speaking of which here's the list of metals we have yet to test:

Copper
Tin
Bronze
Silver
Gold

for some reason i keep thinking of Bronze as a potential fire aligned metal.

Normally I would give you a fate point for pursuing your motivation and pushing your skill, but since you are using one, I'm going to delay it a bit. Lets say I owe you one for later when this fate alteration comes to a conclusion. You did change my plans with this some, but you won't notice it till later.

Lothar treats this as a casual thing. Joking, and trying to set you at ease when he comes in for the measurements. But for you it's a big deal This is important for you in several ways. It's a chance to fulfill your dream for once. To make something for a Hero. Lothar is a respected and famous man already. Loved by the men, and someone who you can genuinely look up to.

So you want this to be good. Great even. So you ask a favor from your co-workers. Smith is the one who really takes the time to respond. He takes a break from his very important work even, and lends you his tools. Specially designed to work with Thorium, his hammers and implements are at the very top of the line. The man is almost supernaturally patient as he guides you through the process, and having his assistance smooths what would otherwise be a very error-prone process into something smoother.

The armor takes shape slowly though, and Smith goes back to work once you finally get it down. You forge over roaring heat, and shining light. Even have to invest in a pair of tinted goggles to keep from blinding yourself. The Thorium is horrifically stubborn. It resists at every point, but you push it into shape and carve in the appropriate designs. Then it's time for the truesilver, and the gold.

The light is sipped up almost greedily into those two. The Truesilver going into a near shining white, and the gold shifting to something even more prominent. Over the metal in intricate patterns they go, and you force the light to align with them.

But you aren't satisfied with just that. This armor is going to be your greatest work yet. You demand that. So you go all out. Your new golden enchanting rod grows hot as you push the magic into the still hot metal. Everything you know, and everything you have learned is accumulating into this one point.

The armor glimmers when you are finished. A beautiful work of art that stands prominently, and likely has no equal in Stormwind. It's something you can be proud of. Even the leather straps holding it into place worked perfectly, despite your inexperience in working that particular part. You have actually outdone yourself on it.

By contrast, the horse barding is almost plain. It's still very good armor, but you honestly didn't have the time to perfect that and the armor for Lothar. The straps and unfamiliar configuration hindered you greatly in that you feel. It fits the horse fine though, and is a marked upgrade from the previous steel plating. With the light attunment, it's going to be enough to keep the horse alive. With the enchantments, it's even going to be a bit better. The previous stuff hadn't even had that.

You've worked day to night on this combo, and barely taken the time to rest. You now know why dwarves drink so much at least, and have become a bit of a regular at the inn. Good food, and good drink go a long way of letting you relax from the frankly brutal work you've been doing.

But you've made the deadline, and Lothar comes in for the final fitting for his armor soon afterward.

"Cutting it close aren't you?" He jokes as he walks in.

You probably look horrible, but you manage to muster up a smile. "Got it done on time. Already got the horse stuff at the stables."

"Tell me you are taking a break after this." Lothar looks rather concerned. "You didn't have to kill yourself for this."

"I'm fine, am a tough son o' a croc." You chuckle. "Just been pushin' it kinda close. So ya, taking a break after this."

You pick up the armor, and Lothar raises an eyebrow. "You sure you didn't confuse me with the king?"

That gets a laugh from you. "Truesilver is best fer this. Though apparently gold is too." You shrug and begin to place the appropriate pieces on the man's body.

Proper platemail is like a second skin. It has to be aligned precisely against the body, and strapped tightly. Each part needs to be secure, and most importantly stable. Chafing might be fine to work through for a few minutes, but one usually is in armor for hours at a time. Chafing will become bleeding, and then possibly infection. Plus, if you're incorrect in a measurement, it could restrict movement too much. In essence, proper platemail is a precisely tailored work of art.

This one more than most. When it's finally fitted, Lothar has a presence that is unmistakable. Better still, it fits perfectly.

You are proud of this piece.

"I do believe you have outdone yourself specialist." Lothar muses as he flexes the armor, and tilts his head this way and that to check the coller. "I've not felt a better set of armor." He rapps a guantleted hand against his side. "Even better, I've not felt one more solid. And I've dealt with a lot."

"Am proud of it." You are a bit embarrased, but very proud too.

"You should be." Lothar claps you on the shoulder. "Does this have a name? An armor like this should have one."

You nod as you step back and look it over. "Holy Aegis was thinking."

"Then so it shall be." Lothar nods. "Now I fear to cut this short, but I have to saddle up and leave. Any further adjustments will be done in the field."

"Sounds good."

When the man leaves, you sag just a bit. You walk to your bed, and basically crash into it. You were careful not to overwork yourself, but dear light was the past month hard. You don't think you will have it in you to do that again anytime soon. So you basically take a few days off with approval from Officer Harding.

Of course your leave is cut short soon after as news from the front with the Orcs comes thundering back.

They have razed a town called Northshire to the ground, and are marching towards Stormwind.

Any further projects are on hold, and you with the other specialists are now on repairing duty. Hundreds of broken and bleeding soldiers are being pulled back to Stormwind. Your duty now is to get their armor and weapons into something resembling a good shape.

[]

You may plan for the next month. You are to dedicate at least 7 segments a week to working on repairs. You are working on a team, so don't worry about volume, this is just the minimum that Wayland needs to work to keep things moving appropriately.

Note, pay is suspended for the moment as well. You got paid for last month, but don't expect to be paid this month. It's considered to be owed.

Made: Holy Aegis - Purple Quality - STR++, AGI++ , STA++, Light Blessed.

Blacksmithing
-150 You may now salvage metal to recoup your costs

Leatherworking Perks
- 25 Armor cost is reduced by one, to a minimum of 1
- 50 Light Leather Reinforcement

Enchating Perks
- 175 When you are enchanting for more than 10 segments, you may reduce it by 1 to a minimum of 10

Heck I even pointed out that by the end of the third month stormwind might have fallen.

[X] train with a warhammer so you can defend yourself if worst comes to worst.

How about looking for Leon, and ask him to give us some pointers? There was that one achievement where we should beat Leon in a spar.
Might also be a good idea to forge our own weapon too. Thoughts?

Well he did owe us the favor. We can call it in so he can teach us how to fight.

He was on a fast track elite course after all.

Weapons training is a must. I want us to be able to fight our way out if need be.
Whelp. If that isn't a warning to get ourselves into shape. I don't know what is.
You really think any amount of training we could get in in the time we have is going to make even a shred of difference? Wow. You sure are optimists.

Wayland is not a warrior or combat mage. Sure, with some training and experience he could probably become semi-acceptable at it - but semi-acceptability isn't going to cut it against orc warriors. Our time is best spent ensuring that the professionals standing between us and the orcs have the very best equipment we can give them. And if that's still not enough in the end, there is only one reasonable thing we can do: Run like hell.

To fight is to die or be captured, and some basic training won't change that.

[X] Speak with officer Harding to see if it would be logistically possible and strategically useful for us to to add protective enchantments agains fel magic full-time to as many of the sets of armor being repaired as possible. If we can equip at least a small elite unit in armor somewhat proof against such spells, it might make a noticeable difference.
[X] If it turns out we simply can't be spared from conventional repair efforts, still do our best on our own time to upgrade the armor as we repair it. It might save lifes.
[X] Don't work ourselves to total exhaustion like we did with Lothar's armor - we might have to leave Stormwind in a hurry if things go poorly. There needs to be some strength left in us to run, if it should come to that.

Shrug, Considering the achievements.

My better half - Gain an audience with the King within three months after the first job
Life in Chains - Get one skill to 225, one to or above 150, and one to 75 or above
I'm On a Boat - Get one skill to 225, and beat Leon in a spar
Never Enough - Fail to achieve any of the other achievements

The fact that I'm on a Boat needs us to beat Leon in a spar. I think it can make a difference, It can't hurt after all.

Besides. It's not like we're some prissy noble just getting started and needing to be trained into shape. Wayland already has some physical training due to his time as a blacksmith. Just need to learn how to fight.

Aren't the other twenty Knights from the King's commission still in Stormwind? Perhaps if we spend some free time getting them out to the field sooner...

Well, fate's against us. Despite Stormwind's valiant defense, which is what we're doing now. The horde crushed them and the survivors had to flee to Lorderan.

Soo. Unless those 20 knights can somehow do something gamebreaking. Stormwind will fall.
