Here's something that's been on my mind for a while and wouldn't let go. And, Lost, yes this would be why I asked about Runecloth and Sailcloth.
Like I said, dragon fanatic.
--------------------------
Wayland looked over his fellow captive from a safe distance with a frown. What was going on here, something within him just screamed that it was wrong. Wayland was a crafter. He brought things from the "Could Be" into the "Is." This dragon, Alexstrasza, she called herself, she would alternate between great fury at the entire world, and almost helplessness, and even a toddler could tell that what was happening with her was wrong. And crafters tried to build solutions to problems. And he was working on that.
But that wasn't the only thing. He didn't quite get what "Life Binder" meant, but on some level she had this "bearing" about her might be the right word, though it felt... inadequate. Even here in this place, whether in full fury or the deepest depression there was something about her that made Wayland think of Lothar or the King. This was someone that he wanted to make a
masterwork for. Wayland wasn't totally sure at first what he'd want to make one such as her--who ever heard of dragons wielding swords? (Well then again, just a five sentence chat with her had more than doubled his knowledge of dragons so maybe they did?)
But as he thought on it armor did seem like it was a viable option. "Life Binder" and all that seemed to at least imply protection or some such so she probably wouldn't mind
too terribly. But then he didn't know if dragons forged their own armor. It was probably something to shelve. It wouldn't get either of them out of there, but maybe... It might give her something else to focus on if only for a bit. A fight of fancy as it were. So he brought it up.
"Ya' know," Wayland began while the large dragon was in a more subdued mood. "When we get outa here, if you'd like I really would want 'ta make ya an armor."
That actually got her to crack an eye open, as if to silently ask,
'Are you serious
? ...Or just that stupid?'
"I mean I don't know if ya've already got one, but... Since I was a tot' 've always been fixated on building things. Our village was
way out in the swamps none around for miles. But our village blacksmith, he's a dwarf see n' fer whatev'r reason he took a shine t' me. An' so he'd show me things. Mostly how t' patch up the local farm tools 'cuz that's pretty much the only jobs ya' get that far out, well that an' making arrow heads.
"But he'd go over other thins with me too. Stuff that'd never come up at home. How ta' make an' fix weapons, armor. How ta tell the quality of a metal and how to distinguish between 'em. How ta' work with stone metals an singin ones. An' sometime durin this I got a idea in my head. What I wanted t do, what I wanted more th'n
anythin', I wanted to make things so good the biggest names in all the world would line up at my door for me to make them somethin', anythin'! So I threw myself into what he was teaching me.
"An' with what he taught me... It got me a job at Stormwind," then unsure if the dragon knew or cared about human politics, he elaborated, "the capital. An' a couple o lucky breaks an there I was making a set o armor for the best known knight in all the land, on the king's commission no less! An I made my best work t' date. But see, I'm not done. An' I
refuse to let that single job stand alone as my legacy.
"So, when we get out of here, Miss Alexstrasza, will you do me the honor of getting to make somethin' for you? I--er already have something in mind if you want to hear about it. I'd use Thorium to protect you'r chest n' core area. Thorium's a real sturdy metal and got some great properties for defense against magic.
For you're arms and such well, I'd really love to use a metal I just heard about, Orcs call it "Truesteel," they dunno how to make the bloody stuff anymore though which is a shame. But I know I c'n work it out. But I've seen some thin's made from it an it's properties are awesome! See it's a real strong metal, like Thorium, an' it really reacts well when you try an' channel... dunno the technical terms for it but Shaman or Nature or... One o those kinds of Fire and Wind! And I hear dragons are real good with fire and your wings make me think you'd also really be able to use wind so maybe you could do something real nice with those.
"An I don't know how strong yur claws are, but I could inlay the metal nearby em' with Truesilver an some different types of aligned Mythril t' hopefully give 'em some different kinds of punch when ya' need or want it.
"An with you're wings... I guess I'd use small segments of Wind aligned Mythril to cover the... I don't even know what to call that... The thickest parts of your wings, that are in the front? 'Cause it looks to me like that's what's holding the rest of the wing together, an Mythril's really light. An' for the rest of the wing... I'd guess I'd use Runecloth, 'cause that's the strongest thing I can think of that wouldn't sacrifice you'r manuverabilty in the air for more penetrating defense. Best defense is not to get hit, am I right?"
...And the smith rambled on talking about the materials he'd use and the enchantments that he'd add, and sometime into it Alexstrasza had to rethink just how serious he was about getting them both out.
