You stare at the man before you in bewilderment to the sound of the roaring laughter from him. You need a few moments to put your thoughts back in order. So this person is… Evelyn's dad? He does certainly seem like a nice person on the surface, even if a bit bombastic, much like Evelyn had warned you before.
But that way of joking does evoke some old and faint memories of times now long past. Yet, despite the heaviness of it all, you can't help but to smile at the lame joke. It's very infectious in a weird way. So if you can't escape this weirdness, it's better to join it!
And you know you've been looking for a chance to get a one-up of teasing your friends.
"Hello, Dadyes, nice to meet you!" you announce brightly, and shake the man's hand very energetically. A mischievous glint has made it to your eyes, and you can't help the smirk on your face.
There's a small pause of stunned silence. Then the man's face lights up like a christmas tree, and he gives Evelyn a smug look. "See, someone gets it!"
At the same time, Evelyn sharply turns to face you. Her expression is betrayed, as she groans. "Tamiko, no!"
"Sorry yes!" you exclaim right back at her, your manic grin threatening to split your face. Evelyn gives you a pained look.
"Oh, you will be…" she mutters with a rueful shake of her head.
"And who might these young ladies be?" Evelyn's dad moves on, completely heedless of his daughter's plight. Ami's the first one to react, offering another curt bow to the man.
"Oh, I am Ami," she bids, only to be cut off before she can finish.
"Yes, I get that you're a friend," he says with a brilliant grin. "Now, what's your name?"
"God dammit, dad, don't you even-! Ugh... The black-haired one is Mariko, the redhead's Kishi and the last one's Ariane. There, done!" Evelyn huffs, intervening before the joke can go on.
She underestimated him very severely.
"Hmm, who's this Done?" the man asks. "You haven't mentioned them before, Eve!"
"It's Adonna Deal," you happily jump back in while you still have a chance. "They are often forgotten after Everything."
"Please, stop…" You're fairly sure Evelyn's physically hurting by now. Sadly, the man seems to notice that.
"Well, I had hoped to make a few jokes about the pizzas too, but I guess that would be too cheesy," Evelyn's dad relents with one final punchline.
Your smile refuses to wane even the slightest bit. Evelyn's family is so nice that you can't help but bask in the feeling of it. On some level, you can't help but to be somewhat jealous of your friend. But it's a small part, that's dwarfed under being happy for them. Maybe you should visit here more often?
"What do you even want, dad?" Evelyn groans.
"Why, to meet your friends, of course. I said it already, didn't I?" he says and turns to look at the entire group clustered in the entrance. "I'm Gilles, Evelyn's dad."
