Chapter 2 - Secrets 10
[x] Go and eat lunch.
[X] Contact Ami. You haven't even agreed on a proper place to meet up after you're done in school.

"Yeah…" you whisper back to Evelyn and put away your Soul Gem, "Lunch sounds good right now."

You start shifting your weight back on your own legs, despite them still feeling somewhat weak. Both of your friends let go of their respective hugs, as you lift your arm off of Kishi's shoulders and stand on your own two feet again. Though you didn't pay attention to it before, you've grown somewhat hungry while you were standing here.

You lift your eyes from the ground and turn your head from side to side to look at their faces both of them smiling warmly at you. You hastily wipe the tears off of your face with the sleeve of your school uniform blouse and nod at them, "Let's go…"

"Alright! Next stop: the school cafeteria!"
Evelyn declares, nodding right back at you in affirmation, before she turns to face the door. She grins and motions for you and Kishi to follow her, something you do without complaint as she holds the door open for you.

You don't pay much attention to the goings of the hallways or talk with your friends, preferring to take the chance to gather your wits again. While the three of you share some occasional chit-chat on the way, for the most part your friends seem to be allowing you some quiet while still keeping you company.

You can appreciate sentiment. Just having them there is enough.

The lunch passes in a similar mood. Though you do chat a bit with each other, it is very periodic and resolves around pretty mundane topics. It doesn't help that most of your lunch break was spent on the roof, leaving you little time to simply lounge around and talk with each other… Well, you probably would have devoured the lunch your uncle made in short order regardless.

You finish with about 10 minutes left to get to the class, something you do with haste. But it is after you have split up with Kishi that you stop. With your mind starting to clear up, you also remember that you need to meet up with Ami today, but that you never really agreed where.

The school grounds are huge too, and Ami mentioned that she went around with crutches so making her move around in search of you would be just plain terrible. As such, you bring out your phone and turn to tell Evelyn, "You go on ahead. I… need to call someone."

Though she looks somewhat quizzical about the sudden request, the girl nonetheless accepts, "Alright, just don't be late, okay? We only have a few minutes left, you know."

"I know, I know,"
you soothe Evelyn and smile faintly, "This won't take long, I promise."

"Heh, catch you soon, I guess?"
Evelyn bids to you and continues her brisk walk towards the classroom, leaving you behind to make the call.

You don't waste any time picking the now familiar number and bringing the phone to your ear. It takes a few moments, but Ami eventually picks up, "Tsubasa Ami speaking, hello?"

"Uh, hi Ami!"
you answer her, desperately trying, and failing to not sound awkward. She might still be wary of you after last night, after all, "Tamiko here. Just wanted to, um… Well, I just realized that we never agreed where to meet after school."

"Oh, that sounds like it may be a bit of a problem,"
Ami allows, sounding a bit amused even under the otherwise clearly bothered tone, "Well, I'm fine with anything, really. Just pick whatever goes best for yourself, I suppose?"

Well, there are several choices for that. You'd need a lot of privacy again, though…

"But Tamiko… You sound like you've been crying. Are you alright?"

What do you do?

-[X] We discovered why our life's been miserable. We'll tell her everything once we meet up. It isn't something we should talk about on the phone.

This is a pretty personal meeting between the two. Bringing other people in, even as observers and even if they are our friends, isn't something we should do.

:/ That is astoundingly blunt and with no context behind it... I don't like it. We don't need to cause Ami any more alarm and/or dread then necessary and when we actually have the talk. Not hours before.

After reviewing, yeah, you're right. It's far too blunt, but the alternatives I come up with are basically leaving her in the dark or saying "I have friends that support me so it's okay" which feels far too much like we're guilt tripping her.

Gonna have to think on it more after my class ends.

How about: ' its directly related to the problem I'm going to explain to you soon, don't worry I'm getting better.
Would that do? Honesty being vague is pretty much all there to it until the time comes and people worries' anyway.

Hmm. I think I'd rather go to Ami's class room for this one. Maybe Yuujin and Matsuko are there? Either way it's easier on Ami, who's on crutches at the moment. Also not bringing our friends but having the talk in our classroom (Evelyn is there), I mean yeah that's technically doable but it feels... weird.

It's been mentioned before a couple of times that Yuujin and Matsuko go to a different middle school called Shirome. They are not here, and it was also one of the main reasons why Ami was so enthusiastic about getting everyone together again..

still feel bad for not meeting her in her classroom since she's the one on crutches and all, but I had to put something up. Hannz, I stole the rest of your vote.

You close your eyes for a moment and take a couple of deep breaths. Sounding sad would only serve to worry Ami even more, which is something you would rather avoid. "It's okay, I'm fine," you say as brightly as you can, "Just had a tough conversation with some friends. Nothing, bad, honest."

There is a small pause on the other end, and for a moment you feel nervous that she is going to realize there is more to it. However, if that happened, Ami certainly doesn't voice it when she finally answers you back.

"Alright then," she says, sounding somewhat doubting, "Just… Don't forget that it's okay to talk about things. I'm willing to listen."

"And I appreciate that, thank you Ami,"
you say, flinching at the words, "And I promise I'll keep it in mind. But I'm okay at the moment."

"Well, if you say so,"
the girl relents with some reluctance, ultimately unwilling to pursue the topic further.

"Yeah.. But back to why I called you here, how would it sound if I came to your classroom when you're done? And, um… Could you also tell me which class you go to? I don't think you ever really told me that," you ask her sheepishly, totally smoothly diverting the topic elsewhere.

"Oh, it's actually in the upper floors! You just need to…"

Ami gives you a short description and designation for the place. Northern Mitakihara International Middle School is a huge place after all, and with numerous classes they are all scattered around. Your old friend has hers in a whole another wing entirely!

But after you're done, you bid Ami goodbye for the next few hours and head to your own class to join Evelyn. She waves at you as soon as she spots you entering, and you smile despite yourself as you make your way to her.

"So, how did it go?" Evelyn asks you curiously as you flop down on your chair.

"We reached a sort of understanding?" you say and shake your head, "Yeah, Ami is an old friend to me, and… Well, I'm going to tell her about everything today after we're done with classes."

You don't miss the fast flinch that passes through Evelyn's face, "Are you sure you're feeling up to it? Don't get me wrong, but you had some really rough times about that a few moments ago."

"That's not the issue for me,"
you tell her. You have made a promise about this already, and you can't go back on it. "It's something I need to go through with. But I'm more concerned about how to approach it here, I don't want her to worry about me."

You give Evelyn a pleading look, "So, uh, do you have any advice? Please? I can't really bring you or Kishi along for this ride, so uh…"

Your request meets with a blank stare, "Okay? I'm not really sure if I actually have any advice for that kind of thing. But if I had to suggest something, it's that don't get too stuck on any particular part? Don't hurt yourself more by dwelling there for too long, Tamiko."

You nod at Evelyn, feeling grateful despite the rather short answer, "Don't worry, I don't plan on doing that. Thank you though, I won't take too long there, I promise."

Evelyn cocks her head and smiles a little, "Right-o, Kishi and I will wait at the gates if it's alright?"

"That's fine by me!"
you exclaim as the teacher finally arrives, ending the idle chatter that fills the classroom.

The lessons pass agonizingly slowly for you, as the clock keeps reminding you of what is waiting for you after you're finished. You've managed to do this once already, but this is what also makes you more nervous. You don't want to break down like that again. You don't even know how Ami, who doesn't even know about magic yet, will take all of it.

So when the school finally ends, and you tell Evelyn bye for the moment, you feel like you're leaving her for your own execution. Fortunately, you don't get to dwell on that for too long, as by the door of the classroom you notice how Hana gives you a polite nod before she walks down the hallway to a different direction.

You actually recoil from the shock of being greeted there all of sudden, the feeling being almost alien to you. But despite being caught flat-footed by her, you still manage a very hurried nod back at her, before you practically run down the hallway towards your meeting spot.

The classroom of Ami's class doesn't differ from yours in any meaningful way, and is nearly empty already when you draw open the door. People have already left for the weekend, except for your friend, who is sitting behind her desk at the far side of the room. Two metallic crutches lean against the wall behind her, reminding you of her injuries more clearly than her words ever did.

Ami herself seems quite anxious, and her head turns sharply a soon as she hears the door being opened. A tense, nervous silence fall between the two of you, and it's broken when your friend finally gathers enough courage to talk up, "Um, hi…"

What do you do?
