[x] Replenish missile massacre
[x] Try to make new device from your deviced used for reeling in wire, maybe a crane hook at the top? You might be able to pull tamiko out of harms way! (And maybe confess to her then?)
[x] Invest in trying to find a mortar launcher, Then you could attack from close range and long range at the same time!
You start going over your options for this evening. The time you have is not unlimited, unfortunately, and you will have to pick the most needed things to focus on. You start idly play with your grief seeds in your bag as you think back to the most recent battle with a witch for ideas. More than any of your previous battles, the one against the silk bird served to highlight the problems in your approach to fighting.
Tick, tock
First on a positive note, the missile massacre turned out more effective than you could have ever hoped, especially for something you created more or less spontaneously. The targeting issues were taken care of by making the witch unable to dodge in the first place, but now you are still left with the problem that you no longer have any ammo for another complete barrage.
Tick, tock
You could create another batch... and probably should, the devastation was immense. However, getting your hands on any explosives is very difficult in the aftermath of the New Years. And the level of cleaning in this city being what it is, chances are you won't be finding any fireworks laying around during this time of the year. Maybe you could try buying some at some point…
Tick, tock
Yeah... as if anyone would sell explosives to someone of your age. You can probably use the few rockets left for other experimentation later on.
Tick, tock
You fall down to sit down cross-legged on the ground and look up to the cloudless sky. Aside from the success of one of your weapons, the battle was horrifying. After Ariane's orbs blew on her face and she vanished from your sight, you wanted to scream. And later during the rematch when Tamiko got impaled as a result of her badly thought out plan…
Tick, tock
You move your knees up and hug your legs to calm your nerves against the surge of unwanted memories. It feels so nice to have friends again, especially after the whole thing in Kazamino… but seeing how they get themselves hurt and nearly killed so easily makes you want to cry. Don't they… well, mostly Tamiko realize how horrible it feels to watch them like that, how it hurts even with healing available to you.
Tick, tock
So it falls on you to keep them as safe as possible, a duty you need to get better at.
Tick, tock
So your thoughts turn back to the way you defeated the witch, by lassoing it and dragging it down with an industrial scale machinery used for reeling steel cable. As it stands, you can't use your steel rope itself to drag anyone far enough fast enough. Drawing the cable back to your body dissolves it rather than pulling it back in, so that is right out as an option. And then there's to risk of the knots not being good enough...
Tick, tock
However, if you focused your efforts on a smaller scale reel combined with well-timed dissolving of the cable, you could fix the size issues. Magic-powered machinery could ease the requirements of power and just by adding a crane hook, the knot problem would be inconsequential.
Tick, tock
Your mind turns to the potential of the idea and you start imagining just what you could do with it:
===
"Kishi, help!" Tamiko desperately shouts at you as the form of the gigantic witch starts exploding behind her as it gets bathed in the radiant white light of her sword. Her expression is fearful, pleading for you to come to her aid.
Before she even knows it, your stylish and shining crane hook immediately snatches her from the ground and drags her to you in a soaring arc through the air. You take a small step forward to catch her on your very much flesh and blood arms as the cable and the hook disappear in dust behind you.
An explosion covers the horizon as the two of you look at each other with wide eyes and both of your faces are getting tinted in pink. "T-Tamiko, I…" you tell her nervously, only to get interrupted by her smiling shyly and pressing her index finger on your mouth.
"Kishi… I know…" she says with a quiet voice and pulls her hand away from your lips and to your cheek which she caresses gently. The world turns perfectly silent as she starts bringing her face and lips closer to yours. With some hesitation you bring your face to closer to hers and…
===
You snap out of your dream and shake your head wildly to dispel that particular train of thoughts. Your face is burning and you realize just how far ahead of yourself you were getting. Concentrate Kishi, concentrate! This is no time to daydream!
Tick, tock
...Still, your subconscious thoughts raise a good point, this device could potentially be very useful. However, you could take this a step further. When you are not busy saving your friends from trouble, you tend to take any chance to rain fire on the witches and familiars. But if you could set automatic machinery to attack the witches in your stead… Well, it would give you a lot more freedom to act on the battlefield.
Tick, tock
And it would actually be possible. Perhaps by scaling down your howitzer to levels of a mortar, and instead of using some magic to rotate through a set of ammunition... Well, getting that kind of thing to aim itself would need more work, but you think you can get that at least started.
Tick, tock
You hop up from the cold ground and bring forth your Soul Gem. A flash of red light covers the junkyard as you transform to your Magical Girl form and the machinery overcomes your body once again.
You close your eyes start analyzing your materials. It seems that you are well supplied for this one and no additional parts are required yet. As such, you find yourself a good, open spot for practice runs and get to work. The forge is lit and activated inside you as you systemically go over the parts you think you need to create the devices you have envisioned.
Magic seeps through you as you stand there and let the process of creating the parts finish. The procedure takes you a while even if you are operating with prior knowledge of similar devices and can use them as reference points. It is always difficult to create something new.
But when you are done, you immediately bring forth your creations to take an actual look at them. The hook materializes as long, metallic cylinder around your left arm with a single bulge one the other side of your wrist. Said bulge has single hole drilled in it to the direction of your hand, the reel and launcher for the hook that would materialize outside of it.
Next to you is a pair of mortars covered in gears, small pipes and other clearly visible magic-powered machinery. Most notably though, each one has a revolver-like cylinder around their bases to hold their ammunition, something you decided not to create when you are not fighting. They can both contain up to six shots, and with two of them in your arsenal you have 12 shots total, which should be enough.
Kishi grief: 551/1300
What do you do?
[] Name your new devices?
[] Write-in other science.
[] Focus on basic practice.
[] Go hunt a witch.
===
The mortars cost 72 grief each to load. The hook takes 20 grief to be used due to relying on magic to reel itself back in.
Also, the next update will probably be the last one for Kishi's science unless you can give a good reason for doing something non time-incentive, for example taking a closer look at the results of the science done.
