Are the newbies scheduling paired hunts with each other, or with more experienced MGs?

I don't think there are enough veterans to go around, frankly. I think the intent there was a "buddy system" sort of thing, making sure that nobody goes off alone without someone watching their back.

Nooo, my vote fragment!

Oh well.

You mean this?

[] Ask Tomo in what capacity is she here? As a novice seeking more experience, or as a veteran helping to teach and protect the new girls? Because honestly an argument can be made for either.

Personally, I thought it would be obvious in what capacity she's here.

With this many newbies, Maiko wanted a healbot. :V

Well, I didn't actually make that clear in the vote, no, and that was mostly inadvertent.

I'd like them to do both. Mixing is a good thing, for a lot of reasons. Making veterans feel like sempai and consequently be in a different frame of mind among them. But it's most important that they not hunt alone. Yes, buddy system.

Okay, so I was intending to close the vote but honestly I think I'm gonna get too tired to write much tonight anyway. So votes open for another day-ish, I guess? Not that I expect the bandwagon to change, but still. And besides I still need to nail down the mechanics for Reiko's wish magic and decide on a family name for Hana anyhow.

Tomo is probably happy to be hanging out with her cool friends (a feeling reciprocated by Yui) and being specifically useful such that Maiko asked for her!

Well, since the challenge was offered
[X] Educational+Relaxed. Let Maiko take the lead, while you focus more on getting to know these girls (but still help out with the lessons/act as backup)
-[X] Emphasize teamwork, buddy system/back watching, etc.

Well, since the challenge was offered
You got the right spirit, but personally I feel like if you don't step outside of the box (and beat somebody over the head with it) then it's hardly worth doing.

I've said it a bajillion times and I'll probably keep saying it; I love Echo's default options. I love that they're expansive and competent, that they provide structure and guidance, that they promote discussion and ideas while creating an environment in which new or casual players can contribute.

And as I've apparently decided to make this a trend, I'm gonna completely ignore it for the sake of some wild, far-fetched ideas.

So, apparently your Witch-hunting party has expanded to include Tomo for some reason, as well as the two girls Minami and Yumi met last night, along with Sae, yourself, Maiko, and Sayuki. And Minami, whenever she arrives.

So... how are you going to do this?

How indeed? So as much as I'm basically just doing this for the challenge of it, I still want to brainstorm with the thread instead of competing against it.

So one persistent idea I'm having is to split the group into 2 groups of 4. These groups will work together, talk together, have a rotating cast between them, but what they won't do is go into a witch barrier together. 8 girls with a high ratio of news is just too much. Things can and will go wrong, and a smaller group is easier to manage and protect. Remember the graveyard witch, which literally gave everybody grief before the fight even started, despite Maiko's protections? Or when Maiko gave girls wings for mobility when we fought a very dangerous train? Is she gonna have to cast these sorts of spells 6-8 times before every barrier? Are all 8 girls going to be fast enough, every time?

So 4 girls go in, 4 girls go looking for the next witch while staying close enough to act as backup. That's one big idea.

Next idea is that we can and should direct their discussion above the broad and unfocused 'educational' or 'relaxed'. We don't need to dictate every word, of course, but providing a bit of direction would be nice. The currently winning vote already does this, but since I love going off-script I'm looking for some new ideas.

So without actually creating even the rough draft vote yet, I'm thinking of something that'd look like this:

Get everybody to talk first, introductions and the like. Magical girl introductions include a brief description of powers, date of contract, and just for fun, how long they think it'd take them to destroy a car or a building or something as a measure of offensive power.

Depending on what powers are available, split into groups of 2. Group 1 is the witch hunting group led by Maiko, and will be broadly educational. It'll let the new girls fight, explore powers and synergies, and Maiko will lecture about various dangers and the like.

Group 2 will usually be led by Yui, unless Maiko needs her in group 1 for a time. It'll be relaxed and friendly in tone, but still address things like territory, Yui's team and the threat of foreign girls invading. If Yui is instead fighting/showing off against a witch, Minami will swap in as a knowledgeable (if inexperienced) representative of our team and city. Maiko may also join group 2 if Yui is in group 1, again depending, but probably not.

While team 1 is fighting a witch, team 2 will be searching for the next witch while remaining nearby to provide aid. After Team 1 finishes, the two teams will discuss what just happened and reassign teams in preparation for the next witch.

Thoughts? In addition, how long do we expect this to take and is there anything else on our agenda we should take care of soonish?

I wonder if you could modify an Incubator body to siphon grief directly from a Soul Gem without requiring a Grief Seed intermediary. Of course, that sounds like the sort of thing the Incubators would be careful to avoid when they designed their bodies.

[] Plan Unstoppable Force (for friendship!)

[] First things first, introductions! (Do we wait for Minami or include her telepathically or what?)
-[] "I'm Yui Aikawa (Aikawa Yui?), And I've been a magical girl since xx, when I wished for the power to protect this town and became it's guardian. I'm strong, durable, and can destroy entire buildings with ease with my pink lasers of love and justice and annihilation." +Other basic stuff
--[] Reassure the others that many wishes are personal and it's ok to keep them private during their own introductions. Also help Tomo with hers.

[] With introductions done and powers hopefully revealed, time to get down to business!
-[] Find a witch, then divide into two groups of 4, or occasionally 5/3.
--[] Group 1 is focused and educational. Maiko will generally lead the group from the rear, providing instructions, advice and support. Tomo as backup and healing, or if necessary Yui for raw firepower. First couple witches will be more cautious in member selection, but will loosen up as people prove capable.
--[] Group 2 is relaxed and friendly in tone, but will still provide education in terms of general knowledge such as territory, magical girl teams, and even how to clean a soul gem. Yui will ideally be leading this team, but if she's needed elsewhere then make sure as least one representative of the team (Maiko, Minami, not Tomo though she can't talk) will be there in her stead.
---[] Group 1 fights witches, Group 2 finds them, between fights both groups come together, discuss and swap members. Keep an eye out for synergies both in powers and personality. Swap contact info, pitch joining the team, and impress upon them the importance of the buddy system and responsible grief management.

Ok here's my rough draft, what am I missing? Too long? Too short? Too Joe? Lemme know!

Maiko will be doing an (even more thorough than usual) investigation of each Witch using her grimoire before entering, and unless you specifically vote to go after strong Witches, anything in the same weight class as Lorelei and Caroline (i.e., hundreds of years old with a kill count to match) is getting skipped.

team 2 will be searching for the next witch

Probably not necessary? Minami's spysat can passively search for active Witches as long as she's not currently in a combat situation herself.

EDIT: I mean, if you want to have one group looking for Witches specifically as part of the training that's fine, just making sure you know that Minami can handle it on her own easily.

Oh yeah I'm sure between Yui's power sense, Minami's spy satellite, Maiko's experience and Grimoire, hell even Chou's plants once she's on board... Finding witches has never been a problem for our group.

But the new girls presumably have no experience finding witches, so unless we want them to become dependent on us, I think it's wise to teach them too. If we can't find anything by the time group 1 finishes, that's when we cheat a big so that no time is wasted.

Edit: though honestly I don't really plan on looking too hard. Just teach them the process and wander around a bit. Something to do while we chat, mainly.

I was actually thinking of including Maiko studying the witches in my vote, but decided to leave it off because of course she will. She won't take risks with the new girls in tow.

Even so, the Grimoire is limited. Maiko has been surprised before and may be surprised again. And while an old witch is almost by necessity a strong witch, there's no inverse rule suggesting young witches are weak.

I just think a more manageable group is... More manageable. Less time and effort (and magic) spent herding cats and protecting against acid or whatever.

Which really is one of the reasons she invited Tomo along, as an insurance policy if the group gets in over their head despite it all--not just the healing, but also the fact that the full-blown Rider Kick thing is essentially an instant win against any enemy that doesn't have specialized defenses or extreme evasiveness (and Maiko has multiple spells that can hold a Witch in place).

...well, that and because Tomo's healing will help wake Yui up if the sleepiness returns. :V

Just imagine a sleepfighting Yui

[X] Educational. Let Maiko take the lead, and help her coach the newbies through combat.
-[X] Emphasize that they work together, either fighting together or tag-teaming and watching each other's back
[X] Particular guidance:
-[X] Never fight alone. One person is much more vulnerable to things suddenly going wrong.
-[X] Help the newbies schedule paired witch hunting
-[X] Call for backup if the witch is unusually strong. There's nothing to prove.

Just gonna bandwagon along since the vote is open, I like the idea of making sure no one dies first before we can even befriend them.

By the way, does anyone know why Yui is sleepy again? I've been searching through the thread and racking my brain but I can't remember why that happened/this is happening.

It's because she stayed up super late figuring out how to heal herself, and therefore didn't get a lot of sleep.

Speaking of my vote, looks like nobody is interested this time. Challenge failed. Frown.

I mean, you did post it at 1 in the morning in my time zone, so a muted response is to be expected since everyone in the Americas was likely asleep.

That being said, I don't really see what your vote does that the current winning one doesn't? It just seems like a lot of moving pieces for rather minimal gain, unless I'm missing something.

In the meantime, for anyone new who didn't read the entire thread, here's a very rough, old sketch for Maiko's costume
Newbies: You are villain with good publicity, with bloody right hand looking as proper one?

???: Don't forget mind control in way of magically emitting authority and being in this business to get harem.

Yui: W... WHO S... SAID T...THAT! IT'S A LIE AND SLANDER! *is fully red*
Alexandria--Yui's Witch--would actually be more helpful, since she'd be capable of absorbing corruption from visiting meguca directly and of partially fusing with other Witches in a way that would allow synergy between whatever remains of their wish magic.
Yui: Why am tied to table? What experiment are you planing? Maiko?

Maiko: Don't worry. You will fill no pain. Also cakes will be had at end of experiment.
Just imagine a sleepfighting Yui
drunk-fighting Yui

Yui: It's totally legitimate drunken boxing! I saw a film Drunken master! Now gimme bottle!

This is... I mean, funny, yes, but... but mad science though. We actually have a dark magical girl in storage and I doubt that Maiko has done any experiments on controlled and reversible witchings. There is obviously ethical weakness concerns, but if we crossed all the eyes and dotted all the tees to make sure that whatever we did was as reversible as we could possibly make it... it would still be an abomination of mad science, but you can't make an omelette without breaking a few heads. Just think of the data!
