Also probably more than a bit concerned by what kind of conspiracy could wipe out a group this well established that thoroughly.

Even worse, consider this: Given the apparent urgency of Kyubey's recruiting efforts and how he's treating the situation as a semi-crisis, there are two likely scenarios: Either he was indirectly responsible and this is part of some long-term scheme, or the assassination caught Kyubey by surprise as well.

If this was a long-term plan, he wouldn't be in a panicked, for an Incubator, rush to shore up the area. Which means...

Should we blame Homura now or later? :V
/人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ "Well, that's the last time I go on vacation. I'm gone for five minutes and I come back and there's a huge mess!"
And keep track of your chronal energy fluxes too. Here and Mikitahara, reports on that's been really falling off.

Well this just went from mildly disturbing to legitimately terrifying.

No idea what to do right now, Yumi's brain looks like it needs a few more minutes to reboot, but I'd also like to deal with her situation as soon as possible. Maybe ask her if she can wait a few moments for us to do whatever it is in the basement, or if she'd like to just get this talk out of the way.

Also, check the kitchen, I think the girl needs some tea.

So this is Momoko's house?

Yes, and it served as the primary meeting location for her group as a whole, as well as a place where girls with no other home could stay temporarily, and anything else her team needed a permanent location for, e.g. girls who left home with their pets usually kept the animals at Momoko's place.

That would explain the memorial wall... and gives another element to the Mariko part of the April Fool's omake. She's not only a shut in, she's a shut in with every life she's failed to save, including Momoko. No wonder Mariko wishes she died with her.

I rather think Yumi correctly pegged the girl in the torn photograph at the end – the last in the long, long march of deaths – as Maiko.

[X] Find out what's in the basement that Maiko wants help with.
-[X] "Yes I will go into the creepy basement where no one can hear you scream with you, Maiko."

Long term storage is not acceptable. I really want to deal with Kaede right after this talk.

Sounds reasonable, though that depends when the talk finishes in this update. I don't particularly want to put Naoko into indefinitely long storage either, but she's going to have to sit there for a bit (I'm thinking a few days, not months) while we hash out a solution. Kaede's case is much simpler, so we should be able to handle it right away.

[X] Invite Minami to come over (if Maiko and Yumi don't mind). Check if she's feeling better, first. The more heads you have to put together, the better.
[X] Suggest Yumi get herself some tea, if there's any. You'll be back shortly.
[X] Go with Maiko down to the creepy basement.
-[X] Ask Maiko if she's okay.

A short vote, because I don't know if going to the basement will allow us to start the conversation with Yumi. @Echo, is the basement likely to take long / an extra vote?

Reasoning:

- Having Minami present will make Maiko and Yumi less inclined to go for the more vicious options regarding Naoko and Kaede. She will also most likely have some good ideas on what to do - she's shown herself to be pretty sensible (if conspiracy focused).
- Yumi clearly needs time to collect herself (mentioned by someone earlier).
- The results of Maiko's experiment will affect our future options for Naoko and other magical girls. Now, I don't want to fridge her for months on end, but it's entirely possible we'll have to stick her in there for a few days, if we get another invasion. We can't trust her and it will be relatively safe in there.
- We also get the opportunity to check on Maiko. She probably hasn't come here in a long time, and this place is filled with the portraits of her dead friends. That can't be fun.

The individual photos are only of girls confirmed to be dead (or witched out, but there's no indication of that, since these are displayed in the open). Maiko did appear in several of the group photos, however.

The photographs are arranged in roughly chronological order. The gap is a reminder of the unknown lives Momoko destroyed in the years she spent trusting Kyubey and acting as his personal assassin. The photo hanging alone on the other side of that gap is of Momoko's sister.

To put things in context, recall what Momoko's reputation was like and that until this update Yumi had no reason to suspect you had any particular connection to Momoko. Realizing that you'd just unknowingly dragged her into Momoko's house was a bit of a shock, especially when she started putting the pieces together and realized that your mysterious ally was probably a long-term associate of Momoko's.

It'll probably delay the conversation with Yumi by one update.

She's been here a couple times since Momoko died--first to check on the place and see if anyone had gotten past the magical barrier, the second time to retrieve some personal mementos, Momoko's Grief Seeds, and anything else she didn't want to leave sitting around indefinitely.

But yeah, being here is hard for her. Even aside from Momoko's death, Maiko knew almost everyone whose photo is on that wall.

Momoko was Kyubey's personal assassin?
Well why, I may ask?

Her wish also made her insanely strong vs unjust megucas...while nearly useless on witches
Well damn.
What a way to screw a Malthusian Trap.
Though with how the latter is....maybe she got a little too haughty and prideful during a fight against a witch and got herself killed as a result.

Her death was the result of a carefully planned ambush and double-cross. They didn't finish her off though. They left her to die in a witch barrier instead.
