Specifically, Kyubey used her to clear out a lot of entrenched, ruthless gangs who killed new megucas on the spot and farmed familiars for Grief Seeds. That was the status quo in most of Japan at the time, leading to extremely low numbers of girls witching out.
So basically, she was bringing a Davy Crockett to the Malthusian Trap concept.
Man what an unexpectedly epic way to munchkin yourself to victory.

Now I'm imagining that she witched out inside the barrier. As a magical girl she specialised in killing magical girls. As a witch...

Major future event to look forward to?

Cool as that would be, we know whoever set the trap also destroyed the witch afterwards to cover their tracks. So it's pretty unlikely.

But wait a minute....actually how would that work really with someone like Momoko?
I mean with that kind of ability, and how witching out tends to kinda....enhance the former meguca's power (I'm going off on memory here, so this is just an opinion)....the fact that someone managed to successfully pull that off....must be- ok I think i'm getting a bit worried here.

No, she died. Maiko confirmed it with her grimoire, and in any case Momoko would have gone down fighting and smashed her own gem before letting herself witch out.

Momoko's witch would have likely been very inwardly-focused, anyway. Having spent her life punishing the wicked and protecting the innocent, to become a witch would be the ultimate failure, and as such her witch would be like Homulilly, fixating on self-destructive penance for her own sins.

*phew* Thought shit was about to hit the fan there.

Also, if Momoko had witched out Maiko would've been able to find her easily.

And, given Maiko's mental state after Momoko's death but before meeting Yui, she probably would have destroyed the witch with a suicide attack.

Yui needs to begin carrying around a camera. And taking a picture of every meguca ever.

For her new harem-wall, of course.

When in private, can we give Maiko a hug?

You are Yui.

You may hug anyone, anywhere, at any time.

Though it may take a minute or two to resume thinking clearly after hugging Asami or Minami. Well, clearly-ish. What passes for clear thought in Yui's head, at any rate.

By the way, does anyone have any comments on my vote? Because it's been almost two pages of votes and no-one has said anything... (no Echo you don't count you're the QM)

Aside from minami's cute factor, do we have any particular reason for inviting her? I mean, what with the travel time, and her lack of being a magical girl... And we always have telepathy if we need it right?

Not that I'm objecting, cute factor is enough for me.

The reason I included that as a possibility is that Minami's apartment is very close to Momoko's house, she's kind of already part of Yui's inner circle, is all but guaranteed to contract eventually, and having a group conversation face-to-face while including one extra person via telepathy is awkward.

Also because the general inclination seemed to be having a strategy meeting with Maiko and Minami at the secret base next, but since you met up with Maiko here and the main topics of conversation somewhat involve Yumi, pulling everyone in at once seemed reasonable.

I mean, you could also do whatever Maiko has planned in the basement then take Yumi with you to the secret base, or meet up somewhere else, or whatever.

Sorry. Currently attempting damage control in another quest. [Internally Screaming]

yes plz save teh moebot from the sads

I'm hoping she'll have some intelligent suggestions on the Naoko/Kaede issue, basically. And also give Yui some moral support, because she's had a tough day.

You've also been too distracted to check in with her after the fight. Fortunately Maiko already let Minami know that you're not, like, dead or anything. :V

I'm assuming Mura is talking about Memento Mori, another PMMM quest, wherein the previous vote was interpreted in such a way to force a very awkward conversation rather more urgently than I think people anticipated. Not that it was going to be a barrel of laughs in any case...

Moebot is the moebot and she is for hugging. :V

It lacks anything resembling Yui introducing the others to one another properly. In this update we have Maiko showing off that she knows Yumi's name already and Yumi staring at her until going pale when she (presumably) realizes who Maiko is, then conversation just marches forward. Somehow that doesn't seem like starting off on the right foot.

Therefore, Yui must take steps to ensure that the two of them become friends. Convince them that they'll get along, get Yumi to share mysterious legends that she's heard about Maiko and put a humorous spin on them to take the sting out, generally act immature to prompt the two of them into becoming exasperated in the exact same way which she can then point out to establish common ground between them, whatever.

Basically, this is a social engagement where two people are meeting for the first time, and we want that to go well- we can't afford to leave either party feeling neglected. Sending Yumi off on her own to make tea while we focus entirely on Maiko does not seem an optimal route toward making Yumi feel comfortable, and making her feel comfortable is likely to go a long way toward a successful recruitment pitch. Our highest priority needs to be acting as a good host, as it were, and only after that can we focus on either business (basement, corpses, dog, etc.) or address individual concerns (and both Maiko and Yumi clearly have them).

Calling in Minami seems like a good play, though. She's a bit quirky but Yumi's dealt with a lot of quirky people, and she's competent enough to give a good impression and interesting enough to hold a conversation with Yumi to keep her occupied while we slink off with Maiko to the basement- neatly avoids the issue of leaving Yumi alone to contemplate just how bad the situation we're trying to get her to sign up for might be/could get, what with the dozens of pictures of dead girls being a rather grim reminder of Momoko's legacy.

Nah, it's exactly what you'd expect. Epic, absolutely, unexpected, only a bit. The Godfather Solution ("if you defect, The Godfather kills you") is one of the simplest and most straightforward real-life ways to defeat problems of game-theoretic coordination like the Prisoner's Dilemma and the Malthusian Trap.
